1:31pm: Furcal's two-year deal will "likely" come in around $14MM, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).
1:26pm: The two sides are "finishing up" talks on a two-year deal, a source tells Morosi (via Twitter). Furcal's deal will be worth more than $12MM, Morosi tweets.
11:32am: The Cardinals and Rafael Furcal are making progress towards a new deal reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). It would rule out another possible destination for Jimmy Rollins, mentions Rosenthal.
Furcal, 34, hit .255/.316/.418 with seven homers in 217 plate appearances after being traded to St. Louis at the deadline last year. He was said to be seeking a multi-year contract last month. Furcal recently underwent an appendectomy but is expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training.

Are they working on a deal for the guy who’s gonna play the 90 games Furcal misses?
Seals
They already have that guy. Tyler Greene would have a better shot to earn the starting job with a good spring in a lesser organization. He has nothing left to prove at AAA but he hasn’t done much in STL. Some think he’ll perform better with LaRussa gone. Others think he’s a AAAA player. Either way, signing Furcal or someone of that ilk will give them more time to evaluate Greene or ease him in slowly.
A lot of Cardinals fans believe Ryan Jackson (AA last season) will be the starting shortstop in 2013 anyway, so signing a ML-ready shortstop doesn’t have to be a long-term deal.
bighiggy
ive heard jackson has some serious skills, but greene has just looked lost, i dont think he will ever be the option
Cardinals06
Greene is out of options anyway, so he has a good chance to be on the team, unless he does really bad in camp and then get released or traded. Cardinals are said to be going to non-tender both Theriot and Schumaker. Also, in the games Greene has played in the MLB, he hasn’t shown much and seems to have bad defense. Maybe, Ozzie Smith can teach Greene how to play defense (I know Smith is going to make an appearence in spring training, along with Herzog).
nictonjr
If the Cards sign Furcal I think it says a lot about how Cards management view Greene. It may not be TLR that doesn’t think Greene can cut it as an everyday SS. Maybe Mo doesn’t either….
bighiggy
besides being terrible on the field he is a jerk off the field, me and my girlfriend went to the winter warm up last year and when she took a picture with greene, he was looking down her shirt in the picture, class act!
ieblue
Doesn’t sound like a jerk to me, sounds more like he’s a guy that loves him some boobs! But really though that is pretty sleazy.
The_BiRDS
Sounds like post for the Dirty!

I like Furcal for the Cards, and I also like Beltran. The need someone else now that Albert’s gone. The pitching will get a boost with Wainwright coming back.
The_BiRDS
So if Furcal signs I would assume the next move would be for Beltran since a Hanely trade and Rollins signing would be out of the question. However, could Rollins play 2nd?
Furcal, Rollins, Berkman, Holliday, Beltran, Freese, Jay, Molina, Pitcher?
Maybe a Wainwright, Carpenter, Oswalt, Garcia, Westbrook/Loshe/Lynn/Miller rotation
bighiggy
how much do you think it would take to get beltran though?
The_BiRDS
I dont really know.. I read that he could be the best bargin on the market right now.. Maybe a 3 year deal worth 45?
bighiggy
id give him that, he’s a switch hitter too which is nice! we have the assets to trade for a second baseman also
cards2WS
I’d go 2 years with a club option. We have Craig, Adams, Taveres comin up and I don’t want any of them blocked. Plus, he’s 33-34 so I don’t love a 3 year deal. It might cost that though.

Eh, I’m more at like 2 years 25 million. I wouldn’t be angry at 3 years really, but I’d like to see Craig get the everyday job before we have to sign him to a bigger contract or trade him.
nictonjr
2/25. And it would be a bargain. He put up almost the exact numbers Matt Holliday put up this year. And it’s only a 2 year deal…
Cardinals06
Descalso is be playing 2B. Schumaker is going to be non-tendered, along with Theriot.

Scott Reilly
why would rollins ever move to second .. its clear he wants to retire in philly
Kendall Adkins
They are projecting Descalso as the everyday 2nd baseman. Which I like if we sign Beltran. That gives us killer defense in the middle infield, and plenty of offense to make up for Furcal and Descalso, who are average MLB hitters at best. Also, when Allen Craig comes back, we will have a lot of power on the bench everyday, and it will give him time to develop a little more while Beltran plays out his short term contract.
So, my lineup would be…
1. Furcal – SS
2. Jay – CF
3. Holliday – LF
4. Berkman – 1B
5. Beltran – RF
6. David Freese – 3B
7. Yadier Molina – C
8. Daniel Descalso – 2B
9. Pitcher
Clearly the Central favorite, assuming Fielder leaves the Brew Crew.
Tyler 20
Rollins would be better than furcal..
Emmitt_Smith
Possibly next season. But if it’s true that Rollins wants a 3-5 year deal I would think Furcal would be preferable.
bighiggy
you think the mets would trade us murphy for kmac, ottavino and greene? maybe throw in brian anderson too?
Chris Whitby
No, not really. That’s a lot of ‘meh’ for Murphy. Not saying he’d command Shelby Miller back in a trade, but I think the Mets would prefer fewer, higher-upside players.
bighiggy
so like blake king, nick addition and steven hill for murphy?

Maybe, but I think it’s gonna cost more than a 5th starter/reliever and three failed prospects.

Sylow59
Wheredo you play him? He’s marginal at 1B (but doesn’t have the power for 1B), and he’s horrible everywhere else
mondaymorninggm
i agree furcal is talented but always hurt. why dont the cards trade lohse for a middle infielder and replace him in the rotation with oswalt. stl is his favorite destination. 3 for 30 sounds reasonable. surely someone would give up a decent m.i. for lohse after last season.florida, new york??
nm344
Lohse got a no-trade. He already said he wont waive it.
nictonjr
He’s in the last year of his contract. Has been horrible to average everywhere but StL. Why would he waive his NTC?? He’s pitching for his last contract. It could be the difference between a Chris Capuano deal or a $30 mil deal…
The_BiRDS
I wouldnt mind Oswalt but Loshe pitched about as well as Oswalt did last year.. Oswalt would be a great addition though. Less pressure in STL than Philly and he would get to play with Berkman again in the NL Central.
bighiggy
the question is would westbrook waive his no trade clause and what could we get for him?
The_BiRDS
I could see Westbrook waiving his NTC to go back to Cleveland as a part of a Asdrubal Cabrera trade.
nictonjr
I’m not really sure Cleveland would be interested. Unless the Cards are emptying their farm system as well. Westbrook has negative value….
cookmeister
The Indians don’t
bighiggy
it would probably take westbrook, cox and martinez to get cabrera. he’s great but they would want the world for him! the red sox are looking at saunders, skip that, trade westbrook there for reddick or package westbrook with someone for scutaro
Emmitt_Smith
Part of an Asdrubal trade? Possibly if he’s carrying Carlos Martinez on his back to Cleveland along with a briefcase filled with $8.5 million in it.
mondaymorninggm
dump him for an anyone…his 9 mil could be allocated for oswalts 10 or 11. just find anyone willing to take him on.
Guest 5743
I am shocked (as an outsider) that they are doing this. I put Furcal up there with Reyes on the slipping on a banana peel list. The guy is always hurt. He’s okay when healthy but nothing great. I am shocked that, after losing Pujols, they won’t try to give their fans SOMETHING as a consolation prize, such as Rollins.
stl_cards16
Spend for the sake of spending? The fans that want that don’t understand what’s best for the long term.
mondaymorninggm
i agree. jimmy isnt the answer for us. neither is furcal. they have to dip into the system for a middle infielder. cox is expendable 3rd base is occupied. i was really pulling for kelly johnson. they can trade martinez too. shelby is the next stud pitcher. if they package martinez and cox they should be able to pull someone at short. we need a leadoff hitter.any ideas??
bighiggy
you wouldnt rather just sign furcal and trade cox and martinez for ausdrubal cabrera, our infield would be great!
Cardinals06
mmmm, when Furcal came last season to the Cardinals he played a big role for us in getting the team going. Furcal is a good lead off hitter when, healthy. Yes, he didn’t get many hits for the Cardinals, but when he did they turned out to be big hits, and he plays defense about a lot better as any shortstop the Cardinals have had in the past few seasons. Furcal started the “Happy Flight” chant. That seemed to do well with the team, if he’s back, I am all for it. Since he was good in the clubhouse. And maybe with a full year under McGwire, Furcal can start hitting better. In the playoffs, it seemed like he was trying to go for a home run, when he’s small, and shouldn’t be looking to be hitting a home run.

Exactly. They made a good decision not going 10 years with Pujols. Why ruin it by making a bad decision overpaying Rollins???
The_BiRDS
Beltran.
Fred 'face' Reichwein
looks like Rollins is toast now… i see a 3 year 39 million with a vesting option for a 4th. great for the phils. they actually played this correct and didnt over paid out of the shoot
Patricio
Sorry but anything over 3 years, 33 million for Rollins is an overpay and that mostly definitely includes any option for a fourth year. If Furcal signs with St. Louis, Phillies ends up with no competition for Rollins services. I can see Amaro panicking anyways and giving him a big contract.
JacksTigers
They need to go hard after Fielder and Rollins. If they can also sign Furcal to play second and trade Theriot, they’d be in a perfect place to repeat and would recover greatly from losing Pujols.
bighiggy
i think signing fielder and rollins would put us back into that tight financial spot they dont want, they would have very little wiggle room at the trade deadline
Kyler Laurie
Why not keep furcal at SS, go after Prince, and keep the platoon at 2B? Yeah it would be a lot for Prince, but give hime a 5 year deal and he can be in ther same spot as Pujol$ at 32. Cards can get the best years from him and move on.
@facebook-800551:disqus
Furcal, Jay, Fielder, Holiday, Berkman, Freese, Molina, Descalso/Theroit/Shumaker, Waino
The_BiRDS
Becasue he would sign with the Brewers or Jays if he wanted a 5 year deal.. Plus that sets him up to hit FA at age 32.. no one will want him long term at that age and on.. He wont be better than Pujols was from age 27-32
arknepp
You obviously haven’t been following the situation with the Cardinals at all. Fielder AND Rollins? I don’t think so. How much would that cost per year for the two of them? probably 35-38 million. Add in Furcal for the year and that jumps up to 40+ million in added payroll for this year. Also, Theriot has very little to zero trade value, and will most likely be non-tendered.
nictonjr
If the Cards didn’t go over $22 mil for Pujols, why would they go to $25 mil for Fielder?? Boras will milk them for every penny…
The_BiRDS
Shelby Miller and Jon Jay for Bryce Harper?
dylanp5030
ur not serious right?
JacksTigers
Look at his avatar closley. It explains everything.
The_BiRDS
No not at all..
Cardinals06
Theriot will be non-tendered anyways, along with Schumaker. Descalso will be the Cardinals starting 2B. Rollins wants 5 years, think that’s good for the Cardinals? Plus, Lozano is his agent. As for Fielder, Boras is his agent. And as of now Boras might try to get a Pujols like contract for Fielder.
Mikelo22
Dislike. We need an impact bat.
JohnS
Only one available is Carlos Beltran… Prince probably is a longggg shot.
Jimmy the G
Ok Jimmy time to stop screwing around and take Rube’s 3 year deal.

DT Flush234
Cardinals don’t need Rollins he wants a 3-5 year contract and he is declining. Furcal will sign for 1-2 years. 2013 Starting Shortstop will be Ryan Jackson he is not quiet ready.
Patricio
JRoll is declining but Furcal isn’t? Rollins will sign for 3 years. Rollins for 3 years is about equal to Fural for 2 when equate the ages, health, and production of both players.
DT Flush234
After the Cardinals resign Furcal. They need to pursue Cuddyer then Go after a backup CF for Jay like Crisp. Then sign Mike Gonzalez.
mondaymorninggm
i’ve been thinking about crisp too. we ned a cf and a top of the ordr hitter. gonzales is a tough lefty. i’d be fine going into the season with what we have now plus crisp and gonzalez. we’d still have extra cash for any midseason trades.
Barvesfan
Furcal would have been perfect for the braves but not at that price.
SC_Giants_28
Seems like an overpay to me. Just because they have the “Pujols” money left over doesnt mean they should just spend it. They should think about spending it “wisely”.
DT Flush234
Is losing Pujols bigger than losing Fielder?
John SMith
just because you can’t overpay for pujols doesn’t mean you should go an overpay for furcal
cards2WS
Dang, 7 mil a year for Raffy? I was thinking 4-5 a year.
The_BiRDS
Thats speculation.. I bet he will get 7 IF he plays a certain amount of games in a year otherwise he will probably get 5
Vossome93
This is an incredibly stupid contract. Ok Mo, Extend Yadi before you waste any more money.

Cardinals fans will be regretting this one!
