Stray notes on various free agents…
- Dmitri Young is attending the Winter Meetings in Dallas, searching for a contract offer. Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweets that Young has lost 70 pounds and would go to Japan if he can't land a job with an MLB team. The 38-year-old last appeared in the bigs in 2008 with the Nationals.
- Outfielder Cody Ross seeks a three-year deal, an NL official tells ESPN's Buster Olney. The 30-year-old hit .240/.325/.405 in 461 plate appearances for the Giants this year, playing all three outfield positions. He told Jaymee Sire of CSN Bay Area that the Giants are his "number one choice" (Twitter link).
- The agent for soon-to-be free agent center fielder Yoenis Cespedes is telling teams he'll require twice what fellow Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman received, tweets ESPNBoston's Gordon Edes. That is, $60MM. The Rangers, by the way, are unlikely to pursue Cespedes, hears MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.
- Roy Oswalt's camp is waiting for C.J. Wilson and Mark Buehrle to sign to see the exact market, as most teams view Oswalt as a fallback option, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
- Free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal underwent an appendectomy last week, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown, and is recovering well at home in Florida.
- Teams are looking at Edgar Renteria as a multi-position utility guy, including third base, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Renteria wants to play for a contender.

I wonder if the Braves would consider bringing back Renteria for a year to keep SS warm until Pastornicky is ready?
NYBravosFan10
i wouldn’t mind it one bit. I love Edgar and he’s still got the good stuff.
chico65
Well, he is Colombian after all. Of course it’s the good stuff.
NYBravosFan10
hehehehe…that took me a minute
tomymogo
Colombian……
chico65
Whoops, thanks, fill of the typos today
chico65
Err, *full of them that is ha ha ha
tomymogo
I like him, he could play SS until July and then call up Pastornicky and he becomes a utility infielder
Nik T.
Edgar can’t hit or field well anymore and you have to look at advanced metrics, how dumb are you?
Nik T.
That comment @ nybravosfan
Zachary Eick
No AL team should consider Renteria though, look at his stats with Detroit and Boston…
Laura Warren Osborn
NO!!! Renteria is horrible.
NYBravosFan10
why? And I don’t buy advanced metrics so don’t include that in your argument
vtadave
Does a .306 OBP, no power, and an average glove constitute “advanced metrics”?
NYBravosFan10
No not all. The guy still has more good stuff than you’re giving him credit for. I’d love to have him as a backup or insurance.
xBraveNewWorldx
What stats are you looking at that make you think he’s not horrible?
MaineSox
How advanced is too advanced? His OBP has been around .300 for the past several years, and (I hate FLD%, but I’m trying to stay with the “simple” stats here) his FLD% has been terrible the last few years.
NYBravosFan10
when I say advanced I mean WAR, FIP, BABIP, xFIP, wRc+, wRc ++, E=MC2…all that stuff.
bacboris
Impressive. So keep it to Wins, Saves, and RBI’s? Just when you thought it was safe after the firing of all those old timer GMs this year…
EdinsonPickle
Hey what’s wrong with keeping it simple? So he doesn’t want every baseball game and player to turn into a math test, cut him a break.
Daniel Wesley
Way to commit yourself to the statistical dark ages!
guydavis
You don’t believe E=MC2? What is going on here?
-C
“why? And I don’t buy advanced metrics so don’t include that in your argument”
“why? I’m being willfully ignorant, so tell me why in willfully ignorant terms”
Honestly, it’s not voodoo. They aren’t magical. They just require your effort to understand. If you’re not willing to make the effort, then don’t expect your arguments to carry as much weight.
On the same token, advanced stats aren’t the end-all, be-all, either. You can’t look at just one advanced stat and come away certain of anything.
Baseball and its statistics are a puzzle – you can’t complete the picture without putting everything in its proper place.

Some shrewd GM just dropped his offer to Furcal since they are now getting less of him
sergio
I thought he had retired
Ben_Cherington
Better pay Renteria more than 1 Million, so he isnt disrespected again!
inleylandwetrust
3 year deal for Cody Ross? lol
Amish_willy
Kind of like Jorge Cantu seeking the same last year.
Serdar Sirin
Good luck with that Cody….
55saveslives
Good Luck with that Cody!
Lefty
If I were the O’s GM, which I am not, he would be signed by now!
Either that or Aoki. Someone will sign him.
OrangeCards
You’d give Ross three years?
Lefty
You’re right giving Ross 3 years might be a bit much.
I would give Ross 2 for sure and depending on what the scouts told me about Aoki probable three years. I would think you would have to do that to get him. I like both and either one would be a solid addition to the O’s.
PS Ross said he would love to go back to the Giants, that looks like a no go. If not there, then a hitters park. Camden Yard is a hitters park.
bayareabeast
hahaha cody ross, i like you but i wouldnt want you on my team on a 1yr contract yet alone 3..goodluck to you
DickHarden
I like how he’s demanding double Chapman’s money, like there are other leagues he wants to play for.
scott4
Cody Ross wants a 3 year deal. Me too!!!!!!!!I think we both have about the equal chance of getting that….Actually i think i will say its about 60/40 me.
FacelessGeneralManager
I say all teams collaborate and keep Cepedes’ greedy self out of the league. Who does this guy think he is?
MattCMoore
It would be really funny… Too bad we all know it would never happen…
Jelly bean Butera
Dmitri Young?
Well, I like his odds at a comeback better than Manny’s.
bigpat
Delusional athletes FTW!
orangenblackattack
Okay Cody, how about 3 years for a total contract value of 3 million?
