Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death earlier today. MLBTR extends condolences to Halman's friends and loved ones. Here are some notes from the AL West…
- A's people mention the Dan Haren deal as a point of reference for Gio Gonzalez trade talks, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The A's obtained Carlos Gonzalez and Brett Anderson for Haren, so it's clear they'll be looking for top prospects in any deal involving the 26-year-old Gonzalez. Andrew Bailey is "more available" than Gonzalez, according to Slusser, but the A's aren't in a rush to make a move despite interest in both pitchers.
- Slusser suggests the A's could also trade Grant Balfour or Brian Fuentes.
- Kurt Suzuki's trade value isn't particularly high, so the backstop may stay put in Oakland, Slusser writes.
- Free agent left-hander Darren Oliver told Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that re-signing with the Rangers would be his “first choice, no doubt.” The Rangers will be looking to add lefty relievers this offseason.
- Rangers GM Jon Daniels told reporters, including Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest that he's realistic about re-signing C.J. Wilson, though he hasn't ruled the possibility out (Twitter link).

Can someone explain to me how a SP who put up 3 4+ fWAR seasons before being traded to the Diamondbacks is comparable to a reliever(!!!) who will generally give you 60 IP?
Steven Chuob
I believe they was talking more about Gio is comparable to the Dan Haren trade and not Bailey.
not_brooks
No.
Because no one is making that comparison.

A couple thoughts: The Nathan signing effectively ends the C.J. Wilson era in Texas. Second, Darren Oliver needs to retire. He should be thankful he was able to be a mediocre pitcher for so long solely because he’s left handed.

Oliver has the 15th most WAR of all relievers over the past three seasons. 6th among non-closers. At one point, he may have been a mediocre starter, but he has been a more than capable reliever. I doubt he will have a problem finding a job next year.

jeez we r gonna trade balfour too
Ben Durkee
It isn’t. If you read more carefully you well see that they are talking about Gio, not Bailey.

I wouldn’t mind blowing up the team to get prospects that can peak when the new stadium is opening up. I would much rather go watch a great A’s team in the new stadium than the poor to average one from last year.
Go A’s!
oaklandfan22
ya exactly i totally agree we should trade bailey and gio for some good prospects we can get a lot for them!

Sorry but just like Jurrjens doesn’t deserve a Grienke haul, Gonzalez doesn’t deserve a Haren haul. What is this now? If you come close to another good pitchers performance you just get the same haul as another team did when they traded a much better pitcher? Just because? All great pitchers but come on seriously Gonzalez nearly walked 100 batters your comparable is Dan Haren….really? Seems a bit over ambitious.

I don’t disagree with you, but think about this…
31-year-old C.J. Wilson, who led the league in walks in 2010, has just two seasons of starting under his belt. He’s expected to get five years and $80MM+.
Gio is five years younger than C.J. and Gio’s under team control for four more seasons.
Even if they don’t expect to get it, why wouldn’t the A’s ask for the moon for Gio?

im seeing roumors that the marlins are close to getting gio and 3 players who played alot on the marlins last year are being talked about dose anybody know if thier is any truth to this

Darren Oliver needs to stay in Texas. He was one of our few good relievers this season. Without the fact that he blew a 2 run lead in game 6. That would be a big loss to the bullpen.

Few good relievers? Adams, Gonzo, Feliz, Uhera, and Lowe were pretty good.

I see you said Uehara…did you watch any of our games outside of the WS? Really…

Well he didn’t do that great for you guys, but he had been a dominant set up man for the O’s before he arrived. During the regular season he was solid for Texas. Good stike out numbers, low walk rate, and decent ERA. I know he was homer prone, but still pitcher good enough.

Rangers stats: 23/1 K/BB; .778 WHIP; .191 BAA
I’ll take a few guys like him in my bullpen any day.

I agree though. Texas should do it’s best to keep Oliver.

Other than a salary dump why is Suzuki on the block?
Suzuki to the Red Sox for either of their two best Minor League catching prospects Ibarra or Butler.
