The Yankees and Mets both face off against strikeout artists tonight, as Max Scherzer and Tim Lincecum take the mound against New York's two teams. In the meantime, here are some related links…
- Five days after releasing him, the Yankees re-signed left-hander Jose Ortegano to a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America (on Twitter).
- Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of the Journal News that Phil Hughes' shoulder is feeling better after a cortisone shot. It appears that it will be at least a couple of weeks before Hughes starts throwing again.
- Giants GM Brian Sabean last spoke with Mets GM Sandy Alderson in January, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com (on Twitter). Sabean strongly dismissed Jose Reyes trade rumors, speaking to Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com. Though the Giants have reportedly discussed Reyes, a deal is not at all imminent. MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes examined how Reyes could fit on the Giants yesterday.
- Grant Brisbee of McCovey Chronicles weighs in on whether the Giants should deal for Reyes and concludes that he's probably not worth what the Mets will want for him.

“Giants GM Brian Sabean last spoke with Mets GM Sandy Alderson in January”
As I said, Urban’s idea that Alderson has already decided to field offers for Reyes is just pure poppycock.
notsureifsrs
i think it’s safe to say that he’s already decided to field offers, but has probably not decided to field offers already
also safe to say that if he doesn’t field offers in july, he’s a very poor GM
caseyB
One can speculate all you want, but I disagree that Alderson has decided to field offers at all for Reyes this season.
And of course Alderson will “listen” to any offer any GM will bring to him, but unless it’s a super spectacular offer, he won’t even nibble around the edges.
You missed the point, though, which is that Urban was essentially making things up.

I think you are being extremely naive.
a) Mets are in rebuild mode
b) Reyes is going to be a FA
c) Mets have financial issues.
d) Reyes can demand a $150 mil on the open market.
Why wouldn’t he actively listen to offers for Reyes?
caseyB
I think you are being extremely naive:
a) Reyes is still young and is the type of player you build around. Not trade.
b) So what? Jeter was a free agent this past winter.
c) They are on the verge of selling off a minority share which will bring a big cash infusion into the club. Moreover, a ton of money is coming off the books after this season.
d) He can demand whatever he wants. What he gets and what the market is willing to give him may be another matter.
“Why wouldn’t he actively listen to offers for Reyes?”
Can you not read? I said, right above, he will listen to whatever offer anyone brings to him. Just like any GM will listen to any offer for any of their players. But unless it’s something to blow him away, he won’t bite.

Giants can’t deal Belt, Bumgarner, or Sanchez for Reyes, so not sure how that package would look. Maybe they consider Sanchez if they had a replacement ready and waiting, but I’m pretty sure Ryan Vogelsong is not the answer.
giantsfan4life
I think a deal around Wheeler and Neil would get it done. Considering that SF would most likely have to take on the full 11M owed to Reyes plus the fact that he’s only a one year rental they shouldn’t be asking for a major haul on him.
northsfbay
I am pretty sure that the Giants don’t want to trade Wheeler or Neil. I don’t think the Giants want to trade thier best prospects for a rent-a-player.
giantsfan4life
I agree completely, I feel there should be no way they should trade for Reyes unless they know they can resign him long term, and since he’s wanting 15-18M per year I don’t see that happening. I was simply stating what it would take.
YanksFanSince78
Reyes salary would be prorated so, no they wouldn’t be paying the full salary.

Dear Brian Cashman,
Trade for Jose Reyes. Don’t give up Montero.
Love,
Everyone sick of Derek “.250/.310/.269” Jeter

How does Phil Hughes feel better when he said he felt fine before? Was he lying?
“I feel fine,” Hughes said. “It’s just arm strength or whatever it is..”

Twins should make the trade for Reyes. If you want a team who NEEDS him, there it is.
Matt R.
SF and MIN could check in on Marco Scutaro in Boston instead. Not that the two are equal but he could be useful without costing as much.

As a Twins fan, I’d rather pay a little more in prospects to get Reyes. Especially when the prospects we have don’t need to be in the Red Sox organization. All that does is set up future problems.

Hughes is about 6-8 weeks away, I heard.
As for Reyes, any team besides Florida and Colorado can be in on the sweepstakes, if he goes on the trading block. With such a shortage of elite SS talent, he can command a king’s ransom, especially if an extension is also involved.
I like Jeter and all… but it would be awesome to have Reyes play on the right side of town.
Also, one last thing, doesn’t Jonathan Sanchez remind you of Ollie? I definitely would not trade for him, if I’m the Mets.
