We heard earlier this week that Cody Ross was seeking a three-year contract. Here's the latest on the free agent outfielder….
- The Giants seem to have moved on from Ross, as Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News (Twitter link) reports the club didn't make any offer to try and re-sign the 2010 NLCS MVP. Baggarly says five other teams are in the mix for Ross' services and at least one suitor figures to offer a two-year deal.
- Baggarly also tweets "the Ross camp has had eyes on Colorado for a long time." ESPN's Jayson Stark (Twitter link) reports the Rockies could pursue Ross or Michael Cuddyer with the money the team saved from the Huston Street trade.
- The Rockies have an interest in Ross, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post, but as a "complementary player" and not on a three-year contract. Renck notes the Rockies are still discussing an Edinson Volquez trade with the Reds, with Cincinnati showing some interest in Seth Smith. If Smith is dealt, it could conceivably open room for the Rockies to acquire both Cuddyer and Ross, with Ross playing the outfield on the days Cuddyer starts at second or third.
- Reds general manager Walt Jocketty tells MLB.com's Mark Sheldon that Ross' agent said his client would be interested in returning to Cincinnati. Ross was briefly a Red in 2006, appearing in two games with the club. Jocketty said the two sides "kicked it around,” though the team has "some other things to do first," presumably finding a top-tier pitcher. Perhaps related to the Reds' pitching search, Jocketty said he has spoken "several times" with the Rays but he doesn't think the two sides are close on a trade.

ALL WRONG! Cody Ross signs with the Jays and they tell him to move to left field 😀 Wow this board is quiet…

You know what’s going on, right? Constant back and forth, Reds offered Davis or Neimann, they ask for Shields, they don’t like the price but then they want Shields again and the Rays come back with offering Davis/Neimann, and it continues.

Now i know why the Rays aren’t doing squat. They are just eyeing on this Yonder player. STOP!!!!!!! Do something that impresses me

As a Twins fan, I love Michael Cuddyer and hope he stays. He is a valuable guy to have around. Any time planning to use him as a regular or semi-regular at 3B and/or 2B however, is making a big mistake. He can play both those positions in a pinch but he is not even close to being adequate defensively for an extended period. Even in his younger days when the Twins wanted him to settle in as an infielder, they saw first hand his defensive limitations and moved him to the the outfield. Getting older has not made him a better infielder!

Cuddyer at 3B and Ross in LF would certainly help balance the Rockies’ lineup. A R/L platoon of Ross and Smith doesn’t sound that bad to me, actually.

On a related note…the Reds and Walt Jocketty are seemingly interested in everyone who may or may not be available via trade, but too trigger-shy to actually pull anything off. Give the Rays what they want Walter. Bring Shields back to Cincy with you. Cozart, Hamilton, Boxberger, and Corcino are the only untouchables. Anyone else they might want is more than worth the cost.
And what would a Volquez/Smith trade have to do with acquiring a top-tier SP? Methinks you could get both deals done pretty easily if you wanted to.

Maybe Ross can sign with the Phillies. That’d be a riot for the Philly fans…

I feel bad for Cody Ross. The man can’t catch a break. Just when he becomes a hero and the fan favorite, the club gets rid of him, whether it’s the Marlins or the Giants. Hopefully there’s another team that can treat Cody right, he deserves it. He was my favorite Fish and I cursed Marlins management for not even trying to get a good trade for him.

Cody, you’ll have a home in the Rockies. coming from the same place as you (Carlsbad-Sr. Class Pres. “77) my home is here. The skiing is great, the hunting is great, the fishing is great and Your #1 fan in Denver would be glad to show you around. You do what your heart tells you, what your family needs from you. Denver is a great place to relax from it all in the off season. Francis Quintana
