The Pirates are close to a deal with switch-hitting catcher Jose Morales, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Morales, who turns 29 in February, is a career .289/.365/.344 hitter through 252 plate appearances with the Twins and Rockies. He's also seen time at first base in his Major League career.

He was a good pinch hitter in his days with Expos. So what is he, like 70 years old now? I just can’t see the wisdom of ths move, but signing McLouth as a back-up was a steal.

Do what?? He’s played with Minnesota and Colorado. That’s IT. He’s only 28 years old.

I love how I keep refreshing this site when it’s almost 2am and see the Pirates signing Jose Freaking Morales, Neal is up all night signing AAA fodder. I love the Hot Stove season!
I think the Pirates thought the Angels done goofed and cut Kendry Morales by accident.

So….many…… AAAA….. catchers……..(breath)……can’t…. stand… all these… depth… signings…
goner
in fairness to the Pirates, they did burn through 8 catchers in 2011, after their top 3 catchers were injured at the same time

I was hoping the Mets would sign him. He would make a good backup catcher.

Hey Hurdle, how about giving Larry Walker, Dante Bichette, the Big Cat, Ellis Burks, etc. a call?

Buccos NEED a first baseman… Why not try to swing a deal with the Whitesox for Adam Dunn? He had a terrible season last year with them. Bring him back to the National League and in the “Burgh with the short porch in right and Bam, Boom, Pow! the Bucs contend…Chicago might even pick up some of his contract.

That sounds insane, but I wouldn’t be totally opposed to this, though I’d want to expand it to a bigger deal if we take on most of his salary (include Danks or Floyd) and Pittsburgh throws something towards their direction. If Chicago eats half his salary, it could work but it still wouldn’t happen.
