The waiver wire is heating up with one week remaining for teams to trade for postseason reinforcements. Here’s a refresher on how August trades work and here are the latest rumors…
- The Indians placed a claim on Jim Thome, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter). However, the White Sox, who have a worse record than Cleveland, also placed a claim, so they would have priority over the Indians.
- It appears unlikely that the Giants, who won the claim on Heath Bell, will complete a trade for the reliever, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports (on Twitter).
- Though the Padres would find if difficult to accept a weak offer for Bell, it might beat the alternative of keeping him and potentially paying him big money in 2012, Ken Rosenthal writes at FOX Sports.
- The White Sox placed John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Paul Konerko and Matt Thornton on waivers, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.
- The Giants are a fit for the recently waived Ramon Hernandez, but the catcher will likely be a Type A free agent so a different team could claim him for draft picks, ESPN.com's Buster Olney notes (on Twitter).
- Hoynes suggests the Indians likely claimed one of Thome and Jason Kubel (Twitter link). Unknown teams claimed both Twins sluggers this week.
- The Rockies were one of the teams that put in a claim on David Wright this month, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Though it's unclear which team won the claim, it probably doesn't matter at the moment, since the Mets aren't trading their third baseman. As Renck points out, it's a reminder that the Rockies will be interested if the Mets ever make Wright available.

THey should take Bell to arbitration and then trade him after signing. Will gain the most value back that way. Who knows, maybe he was bluffing about accepting.

KONERKO!?!?! Angels.. Please inquire.. Trumbo-Konerko =)

No.

Joe – You realize that almost all players are put on waivers. It doesn’t mean the Sox are actually gonna trade him. Now if you wanna put in a claim on Rios and reunite him with VW we can do that.

The Giants only claimed Heath Bell so the Phillies or D-Backs or any other team wouldnt get him.

Right, it has nothing to do with the fact that 2 of the relievers are injured and most of the rest aren’t pitching well at the moment.

It would cost the Giants too much. The Padres would trade him for the right price.

Maybe the Padres should claim ramon hernandez. Backup catcher has been a problem this year. They could offer arb and either have a solid backup or some draft compensation.

yep, because .297 OBP players are so hard to come by. Power’s nice, but if you get on base less than 30% of the time, you better hit 40 Home runs a year. Trumbo’s likely going to be a slightly-above average player with good pop. He’s really not that good, and extremely overrated.
A 15% K%-BB% is flat-out putrid.

Are you kidding?
You are talking about a ROY candidate. The kid is only going to get better.
Compare his numbers to Paulies as a rookie.
Paulie- 270 OBP and 40% K-BB Like I said before there’s not a chance in hell LAA would do this deal but if they did yes The white sox would accept. They would be dumb not to. I love Paulie, I love his 05 grand slam, I love his never give up attitude, He is a leader in all aspects of the game of baseball and is one of those “good guys”. I will make sure I’m at the games that they retire #14 on the left field wall and when they reveal the statue. But give me a break if you don’t think Trumbo would help the sox more in the next two to three years let alone five years then Paulie will. Then again The Angles would NEVER do this!

You know who else was a ROY canidate? Angel Berrora.
Trumbo is at best a DH with 35 HR potential. That’s nice if you can get on base. If you can’t- he’s a bit above a league-average regular (2.5-3.5 WAR) at best. Not saying Konerko’s a super star, or that the trade wouldn’t make some sense (Trumbo for Konerko, no cash involved changing hands, and you do it because of financial situation), but the fact on Trumbo is that he’s really not that good.

You really think Trumbo is anywhere near the player Paulie is? You do realize Konerko has been doing his since the 90’s and this is Trumbo’s first year right? I wouldn’t give a veteran slugger/borderline HOF candidate for a rookie that wasn’t even suppose to be this good in the first place. Maybe he keeps up his performance over the next few years but I wouldn’t chance it by giving up the captain of your team and the face of your franchise. And youre making noise because he is a ROY candidate? Seriously dude. Eric Hinske was a ROY. Good player but no one is going to trade a cornerstone of their team for him. Maybe if the Angels overwhelmed the Sox something would happen but very doubtful. They have to look to next year as well.

Dude is going to be 26 with one year of mlb experience. Not sure you quite know what you are talking about. A grizzled vet that has shown he can get it done, and also get it done in the playoffs for a average powered post prospect age Trumbo. Yeah right I suppose you will point his 36 HR’s in the PCL, but we all know what happens to numbers in the PCL. Angels would be dumb not to do it. Or is V Wells gonna get you there? No. I say Sox would need more then Trumbo.
