We've already checked in on the Pirates and here's the latest on the rest of the NL Central as the first-place Brewers rest…
- Jim Crane's purchase of the Astros is on hold because MLB is investigating employment and war profiteering charges against the incoming owner, according to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle. However, current owner Drayton McLane remains optimistic that the sale will go through within ten days.
- Matthew Leach of MLB.com says the Cardinals will likely find a way to bring Chris Carpenter back in 2012, even if it doesn't mean exercising his $15MM option. I took a close look at the option last week, explaining that there are ample reasons for the Cards to pick it up.
- Though Lance Berkman projects as a Type A free agent in the National League, he would be a much higher Type A free agent in the American League, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes reports (on Twitter). It's noteworthy since the Rangers just lost Nelson Cruz to the disabled list and could consider Berkman, who has cleared waivers.

War profiteering? Who is this guy? Daddy Warbucks?
Baseballfan83 2
Worse he is Frank McCourt. They better not let this guy in
FacelessGeneralManager
So wait, MLB won’t let Mark Cuban own a team because he criticizes refs or umpires. But this guy is allegedly war profiteering and he is perfectly ok?

Eh, why not. Baseball may be the national pastime, but war profiteering is a close second.

just wait for the next comish to take over…I bet once selig is gone, because cuban has always rubbed him the wrong way, Cuban is right in the front of the line to buy a team. I think its funny that the tribune was allowed to own one of the most recognizable franchises in all of sports while being bankrupt for years. The lorias(they are the owners of the marlins right? are notorious for not wanting to pay their players. Look to Dan Uggla a few years ago when he won his arb case they refused to pay but then were forced to. They are allowed to own a team…Mccourt is allowed to own a team. A guy who settled out of court over an Equal opportunities employment issue that deals with people who are not whites or males and is supposedly a war profiter if allowed to buy a team. But cuban who wants nothing more than to win, and has proved this this past NBA season. This is proof enough that selig needs to be taken out of power….Plus his unwillingness to do anything about the roid era when he knew about it, and the fact that he refuses to update the game, like all the other big sports have done…
imagine if cuban owned the padres, or pirates, or rockies or any of those small market teams. they would rival the yankees and bosox in terms of payroll with in a year or two

Loria was forced by baseball to spend money out of all the get in revenue sharing also. That’s probably the only reason they re-uped Johnson.

I hope this deal falls through and Cuban buys the Astros
