The Mariners announced that they sent Jack Wilson to the Braves for a player to be named later. Wilson, 33, is currently on the disabled list with a bruised heel and is eligible to return to action this Friday.
Wilson has a .249/.283/.295 line in 187 plate appearances for the Mariners this season. He has played second, third and short for Seattle and his glovework is generally highly thought of, so he meets Atlanta's need for infield depth. The Braves had been looking for infield help and inquired on Jamey Carroll before acquiring Wilson. They also acquired outfielder Matt Diaz from Pittsburgh today.
Wilson earns $5MM this season in the final year of the two-year, $10MM deal he signed after the 2009 season. He'll hit free agency after the season.
Julio Teheran headed to Seattle?
seems fair
sounds about right.
Only if they threw in figgins..
He’ll have a shot at the post season and gets some playing time now. Good news for him, I enjoyed watching him play here.
Better than Lugo. May be better than AGon.
Well, maybe. I would say Wilson is better with getting on base, but still not good. Either way, we got a good deal on a good defensive utility guy.
Wilson fills the bill. Now just cut Lugo to make room. No harm, Braves took a flyer on Lugo and it didn’t work out.
Great job Braves, we have Constanza, who´s better than Heyward, so Heyward for Jack WIlson is a great trade!!!
What? R u insane, sophomore slump.
We wish the Mariners acquired Heyward. hah. Jack can play all over, and he’s got one of those gloves that everyone wants, even if his bat leaves much to be desired. If only we could’ve duped the braves into taking Figgins.
….insane and no sarcasm there.
!!
Wilson should be a first-ballot HOFer just on the basis of his glove.
And Pittsburgh dearly misses him.
I guess that takes care of everything the Braves needed to take care of before crunch time. A pinch hitter / 4 or 5 OF that can hit lefties, and a good backup IF. Not much else to do but hope things fall their way at the end of the year.
Wild Card is a Lock !……LOL
Look everybody, another D-Bag Philly fan!!! Wow, haven’t seen one of those in what, 5 minutes? Gotta love the trolls…
D-Bag just like those 2 lame/homer announcers Joe Simpleton & Don “1978 perm” Sutton
Yep, because “Sarge” is not a homer.
Sarge is brutal!
brutal on our ears
And Chris Wheeler isn’t as bad as Tim McCarver…
Nobody is as bad as Tim McCarver except for maybe Joe Buck.
Wren’s mindframe is a lot better this year than it was last year when it came to trades. a solid trade.
Jack Wilson for a PTBNL is a good deal for the Mariners considering that there is only another month on the season, and with Brendan Ryan getting most of the playing time at short there is no reason to keep a high salary back-up infielder on the team if there is trade interest. Plus with Carlos Triunfel and Nick Franklin making strides toward being MLB ready players, Wilson really didn’t have a place with the M’s ball club after this season.
Granted the guy they get in return probably won’t ever amount to much, but something is indeed better than nothing.
Yep. I think more teams should do this type of trade late in the season. He still has some value and isn’t going to be in the long-term plans of the team. They might as well get a little bit of salary relief and a (very) outside shot of getting a player that could give the team some future value.
Freddy got a ring last year. Jack this year? Two of my all time favorite Buccos.
I know this isn’t the case but it would be nice if the PTBNL was Brandon Hicks. Its time for him to go the way of Scott Proctor……out of the Atlanta organization. At the very worst, I hope the signing of Wilson prevents him from being a September call up. We already have a SS who can play D but can’t hit to save his life.
Hicks has had a good season with the bat in AAA, and it’s not like he has much of a sample size in Major League AB’s yet. He’s also quite good defensively, so your strong dislike for him surprises me. And without him we have very little depth at shortstop.
I always liked Jack and I wouldn’t be suprised if he’s back for next year. Tyler PAstornicky would obviously be my first choice but the Braves insider beat writer Mark Bowman doesn’t seem to think he’ll be ready for his first full season despite absolutely destroying it in AAA since his callup.
I don’t know if Bowman always has a good pulse for the organization, but Jack’s still a good player to have on the bench for next year.
Great pick up, after running into injuries late in the season last year you can never have enough solid infielders.
Wilson would like to come back to pittsburgh, he is better than Cedeno. Just wonder what the bucs would offer him to return
hey at least now if someone gets injured we have someone to play defense instead of conrad.
