White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that he knows his bosses will consider firing him if the team doesn’t perform. And though he says he wants to stay in the White Sox organization for the rest of his life, Guillen says GM Kenny Williams and owner Jerry Reinsdorf don’t owe him anything.
“If Kenny or Jerry doesn’t think I’m doing my job . . . they’re going to fire me because my players don’t produce,” Guillen told Rosenthal. “I respect that. I don’t mind getting fired. If I get fired, it’s for a reason. What reason? Me.”
Though several rival executives believe the White Sox would be better off without Guillen, at least one team covets the former shortstop as a future skipper. The 15-8 Marlins expressed interest in obtaining the rights to Guillen in the offseason are not currently discussing an extension for manager Edwin Rodriguez, who is on a one-year contract, according to Rosenthal.
Rosenthal notes that the White Sox asked for Logan Morrison in exchange for the right to hire Guillen last offseason, not Mike Stanton. Last fall, many reports indicated that Stanton was at the center of the discussions between the White Sox and Marlins.

Fire Williams not Guileen

Why exactly? It is widely known throughout the baseball world that he is one of the better gms in the game. People put way to much on his recent trades but if you look close Hudson for Jackson looked like a win for the dbacks last year. But Hudson is a bust so far this season and Jackson is really good for the sox so far. The danks trade was a win for the sox the Floyd trade was a win the rowand for thome was a win at the time for both teams. His only recent bad trade has been the peavy trade and if Jake comes back healthy it will be a good trade. ( the swisher and Javier trades were salary dumps). Kenny does make good trades and his staff drafts good players ( beckham, sale, morell) and they do a great job in international signings ( alexi, vicedio, Escobar). So why should he be fired?

weak
jwsox
how is that weak? yes the sox took on a ton of salary but they did it thinking they would get Dunn and that clearly didnt happen and they still have jackson and clearly still got dunn.. Both have been shaky but hudson has been really bad this year I understand its growing pains from a younger pitcher but at the same time maybe last year was a flash in the pan.

your analysis is based on 5 starts in april. that is weak

“they’re going to fire me because my players don’t produce,”
Sounds a bit to me like he’s blaming his players. Then he says:
“If I get fired, it’s for a reason. What reason? Me.”
Sounds like a veiled cover up for his previous words. But we all know what he means.
notsureifsrs
sounds to me like he’s acknowledging that it’s his responsibility to make sure that his players produce

Typical Guillen hater post. Moving on…
JimBaily
Ozzie may be entertaining and get the most attention for his team, but as a field manager, there are few who handle the job worse.
WhiteSoxHomer
See I completely disagree. Is he the best at anything? No, but he is solid at everything. As an all round balanced manager he is one of the best.
JimBaily
No team is less prepared than an Ozzie team, every year. No team is fundamentally worse than an Ozzie team, every year.
Ever go to a game and watch BP? You will see Ozzie sitting watching and laughing as each player pulls every ball as hard as they can.
The guy is no better at handling a bullpen either. Again, the guy is as entertaining as they get, but is as bad a baseball manager as there is in the majors.
The only reason he has a job is for the attention he brings to the team.
alxn
I think just about every fan thinks their team is the worst fundamentally and that their manager cant handle a bullpen to save his life.

other than the twins
Matt Manzella
You are wrong, and there are plenty of baseball people that disagree with you. The guy’s only had 2 losing seasons since 2004. You can’t blame Ozzie for bad defense, blame Kenny for acquiring terrible defenders. Every player has the option of attending Camp Cora in January to work on their defense. So far only Alexei, Beckham, Viciedo, Morel, and Rios have decided to attend and all have shown improvement. Especially Viciedo and Ramirez. Ask the players, the only ones who’ve complained about Ozzie are Bobby Jenks and Orlando Cabrera, two noted d-bags. Guillen isn’t the problem, but he more times than not will deflect the blame from his players to himself.
Lunchbox45
so GM gets the blame if the defense is awful.. but manager gets the praise for only having 2 losings seasons since 04?
WhiteSoxHomer
I think his point is that Guillen provides a means for defense to improve and so is doing something to improve the defense. If he did not try to improve the defense the fault would lie on him and Williams. Could he do more? Probably but he does make an effort. You cant force a veteran player to attend an optional activity. Sometimes you cant even get a veteran player to take part in a mandatory activity. Also for the point of having only two losing seasons, this is not an praise for Guillen and blame for Williams this is just showing how Guillen deserves some credit for managing the team.
Lunchbox45
You can get a veteran player to take part in an optional activity.. all you have to do is make it mandatory.
WhiteSoxHomer
There are stipulations when you can make a player take part in activities. They were talking about a camp in January. That is not a time when you can force them to do anything. During spring break yes you can make them and they do.
jwsox
There are two things Ozzie is not the best at. One is bunting he seems to think a team full of sluggers should waste an out with a sac bunt by alexi of Pierre. Secondly is his bullpen use and it’s only at the beginning of the year while he figures out his Pitchers in real game situations after a month or so his knows exactly how to use his pen( there is only so much you can do with a bullpen in spring training) it’s not ozzies or kennys fault players make errors or get off to slow starts hitting it’s the players fault
jwsox
your really going to make an argument based on batting practice? I remember watching BP in when pods was still on the team and he was hitting balls into the bleachers but hardly if ever did it in games. BP is to get the batters warmed up and to give some pre game entertainment to the fans.
Lunchbox45
The Mike Stanton For Guillen thread on this website was probably the best of all time.
Mark S
I don’t know, The Roy Halladay to the Mets thread was pretty good as well.
Lunchbox45
I don’t remember that one!
Mark S
It was during the Trade Deadline of ’09
Jon Heyman reported that the Mets acquired Roy Halladay, and when it turned out that either he was fed bad information or he flat out lied, the comment section exploded.
alxn
I remember that, and it was hilarious.
I think the actual report was that the Mets turned down an offer of Halladay for a package of B prospects centered around Fernando Martinez.
jwsox
dear lord i hope that is true…
User 4245925809
Morrison for the rights to hire Guillen?? Looks like Williams did Luria a favor there asking for a top prospect in return for a Manager who isn’t even mentally stable.
jwsox
yeah a “crazy” manager who has a world series ring and only 2 losing season in how many years with this club?
mike
Would you please take Walker with you to the Marlins? As soon as possible!!
jwsox
Typical hatter. You hate walker when the team is not hitting but don’t say a word about him when they are crushing the ball. Hitting coaches don’t do anything to MLB players. Every once and a while a hitting coach will change a players hands or stance( see curtis granderson) but most of the time the players don’t change anything ( see Derek jeter or Derek lee last year on the cubs)
Serdar Sirin
With the way Edwin has been managing the Fish so far, we may not even think about Guillen next season. Time will tell.
gunsnascar
Ive allways thought that ozzie was a contraversial distraction to the wsox. But Kenny Williams is also to blame with his lame ass trades for players like peavy for example. Reindsdorf should fire both williams and guillen after their past business decisions. Maybe they should have traded their mgr this past off season atleast they could have got a return outta getting rid of ozzie.
Kevin Chambers
You know I’ve been a avid anti-supporter of Guillen’s for a long time now. Ever since I started coaching though I understand and actually like him a bit. It’s not his fault that the players can’t play. Matt Thorntons blown saves were because of errors by Pierre and Alexi. There’s only so much a manager can do. In the end it’s the players who have to decided to play, sometimes you have to fire the manager to give a wake up call. Now who I really blame for this team is Kenny Williams. Now he’s made good moves, but lately any move he’s really made has been really, really, really bad. I think we need to get back to the basic’s and develop our own guys and not rush them to the majors as was done with Sale and Beckham. Go at it like the rockies.
Karan
I like Ozzie. He reminds me of yosemite sam.

Regardless of his managerial ability, I would never want Guillen associated with my organization because of the following:

Tweeting Ozzie just wants to have fun
By ESPNChicago.com
“……Guillen said if tweeting becomes a problem for Williams or White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf he would consider stopping. But if he could figure out a way to make money off it, then the discussion might be more difficult.
“If I was making money out of this then we’d fight,” Guillen said. “If I was making money out of this, I don’t care who told me, Jerry, Kenny, my mom, my dad, I would tell them to [forget] themselves. I just want to have fun, but if there was money involved I’m pretty sure I would get fired because I would fight for it.”
My comments:
Ozzie constantly claims that his love for his family, the White Sox, and Jerry Reinsdorf in particular are foremost in his life. But then he rationalizes that the pursuit of money allows him to publicly toss f-bombs at his parents and Reinsdorf. In Guillen’s mind, his constant “I just want to have fun” motto evidently justifies his childish behavior and self-centered money-oriented views on life. All this disrespect because this multi-millionaire needs to make a few more bucks on the side? Where are his priorities and his respect for those closest to him whom he loves so dearly?
You always hear Kenny Williams state the the White Sox want players of high character. That standard should also include the manager. People can argue whether Guillen is a first-class manager… but there’s no doubt that he’s a second-class human being.
CommissionerBart
Fire both Williams and Guillen. Long overdue. They’re running a circus in Chicago not a MLB team.
On second thought don’t fire them, please dont’ fire them. I like to see the large ChiSox payroll go up in smoke.
