Turns out the rumor was too good to be true. Yankees GM Brian Cashman says he has no interest in left-hander Oliver Perez, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch (on Twitter). The Yankees considered the former Met, according to SI.com, before concluding that they would be better off without him. "It's not something that makes sense for us," Cashman said.
The Mets released Perez yesterday, making him a free agent. If an MLB team signs Perez, they'll contribute about $400K of his salary, with the Mets responsible for the remaining $11.6MM.
Pedro Feliciano and Boone Logan give the Yankees two serviceable left-handers out of the bullpen, so they never seemed like a likely destination for the 29-year-old. The Brewers aren't interested in Perez, either.

All of those ridiculous posts about a rumor that wasn’t even true. Of course to save face, most will say that Cashman is lying to cover up the sheer audacity of looking into Perez.
Let the comments roll in…

They should set up something like a Match com for baseball players. If a team is interested, they send a wink. Hey a player could send a wink to a team. If not interested, they could either ignore the player or send a quick and private note saying “good luck in your search.” If Ollie’s agent persisted, the team can always click a “report a concern” button which can then be answered by the commissioner or the team union. That way there isn’t a public disclaimer of “Yankees Not Interested” over the Internet. How embarrassing for Ollie…the dude is going to get self esteem issues. Maybe he should get a professional to write his profile?

It’s not something that makes sense. Period.

Oliver Perez has no interest in pitching until the next WBC
DeManiac
I wonder if Cashman was all for it until he read the MLBTR comments and started second-guessing Perez’s velocity…

Which user do you think he is??
My guess is YanksFanSince78

Trying to throw us off the scent huh? Can’t fool me. Nice try, Brian Cashman.
YanksFanSince78
Ahhhh man. You’re just going to call me out like that? haha.
Seriously, though. It just blew my mind yesterday at the backlash I received. I definetly OD’d with the responses and should’ve taken it w/ a grain of salt.
To be clear, I wasn’t advocating the signing as much as I was saying it was a good idea to givehim a shot at on a minor lge signing at $400k. The lge is scattered with left handed pitchers who throw 88-90 mph and they are valuable to have.
The chances of turning him into a viable LOOGY might be slim but the Yanks can afford a $400k gamble as most teams probably could.
The fact that ppl replied so venomously saying he would never be a mlb starter or that he shouldn’t be GIVEN a bullpen role out the box, WHEN THAT CLEARLY WOULDN’T BE THE SITUATION HE WOULD BE SIGNED FOR NOR THE CLAIM I WAS MAKING, sort of irked me. Clearly, or so I thought, I was pushing for a minor lge “looksy”. When you have Feliciano and Logan with minor health issues already and your AAA depth isthatof Andy Sisco and Steve Garrison then I thought it would be a good idea.
Oh well, hopefully I won’t get bashed for such a minor non-intrusive thought in the future.
Maybe the “he threw 94-95 mph a couple of years ago” comment, which was clearly “my bad” was what set ppl off?
Either way, I can’t wait for the season to begin. Good luck to all….except all AL East teams…haha.

“It’s not something that makes sense for us,” Cashman said, “because Oliver Perez is terrible at pitching.”
Seriously, was this a legitimate rumor? I know the Yankees are scraping for SP, but really now…
SixAces
It seems to be a story that is blown out of proportion. Organizations “take a look” at every stinkin’ player that falls into the market.
Guest 6996
When it comes to the Yankees the rumor become set in stone & plastered on every message board until the next cold stone lock of truth least until the next rumor appears. Then the feeding frenzy of posters begins their attack of the message board.
From now until the end of the season there will be endless Yankee rumors looking at Pitcher X until they actually trade for a SPer and/or the season ends.
The_Silver_Stacker
Perez should buy tickets to the Mets opening day
bomberj11
I’m sure he’s not allowed in the stadium anymore, season tickets or not.
The_Silver_Stacker
It would have been amusing to see how that would play out
rovert22044
They should rename this “No Teams Have Interest In Oliver Perez” …
Michael Sommer
Told you it was B.S.
iheartyourfart
i wish cashman had a twitter. “took a look at ollie perez… it was a no go. #youmustbekidding”
stl_cards16
That was a collective sigh of relief from every Yanks fan trying to think of a way to defend this signing for the last 24 hours.
Vmmercan
More like no legitimate fan ever even considered the rumor to be true in the first place.
But for the sake of argument.
500k is one quarter of one percent of the Yankees’ payroll. Think they care of Perez does anything whatsoever if they signed him?
There, defended. It took approximately half a second.
Ian O'Malley
Oh, what a shame Ollie could have been the best yankees lefty bullpen reliever since Kei Igawa.
Brian Malenke
Title should read “Yankees have no interest in WINNING in 2011”

Watch the Cards pick him up and Dave Duncan works his magic.
