Though the Brewers will likely call on one of their current pitchers to fill out their rotation, the team is monitoring arms that could become available on waivers or through trades, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. GM Doug Melvin says he will “probably” fill the rotation from within.
"It's very difficult to make trades at this time of year because other teams are trying to preserve their depth,” Melvin said. “We're making a lot of calls."
Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum, Melvin's two primary offseason acquisitions have had setbacks this spring. Greinke will miss at least one start with a cracked rib and Marcum has a stiff shoulder. The Brewers appeared to have depth early in the spring, but Mark Rogers (shoulder) and Manny Parra (back) have dealt with injuries as well.
The Brewers are not interested in Doug Davis, Oliver Perez or Kevin Millwood, according to McCalvy. Milwaukee has a full 40-man roster, which means they would have to remove a player from the roster to create space for a new addition. Internal rotation candidates Wily Peralta, Marco Estrada, Eulogio de la Cruz and Tim Dillard are among those on the roster.
Do the internal rotation candidates. Perez give me a break, they would be better to pluck a fan from the stands and have them pitch. Millwood would take to much money. Davis to me is a question mark as well.
It is not major injuries so why spend more money on things you dont need to do
The Twins have matched up with the Brewers in the past. Could happen again if they’re interested in Slowey.
I’m not sure the Brewers have the Double-A relief arm it would take for Bill Smith to part with another solid MLB-level starter…
Tim Dillard and Pat Egan
I’ll trade you Jake Peavy.
Kawakami for a mil and one of the lesser-valued guys on the 40-man? Don’t have to worry about the slot then and get a living, breathing pitcher until the big guys are back.
Way too expensive.
How about Kawakami for $2 million?
What happened to those two guys? Can’t be that serious…
Pedro Martinez?
Okay, joking, but what about Kevin Slowey or maybe James Shields?
We have nothing to give up to get pitchers the caliber of Slowey or Shields.
Sometimes the best thing to do, is nothing at all.
My guess is when dm says he’s looking outside for help, he means he’s looking for players like he got from the yankees last year, what was his name again? The kid that gave up like 4 homeruns in an inning to the red sox.
Chase something or something chase? I know who you mean though.
Marc Rzepczynski?
Brewers don’t have much left to give up .
Marc Rzepczynski! Jesse Litsch! JoJo Reyes!
For what though? Their prospect cupboard is empty
Unless AA wants to take a shot on Gamel, but so many scouts have projected him to not be able to stick at 3B
Gamel will replace the Prince. I think, I’m sure Gamel hopes so.
How’s his defense at 3B?
Im not a Brewer fan but I know its BAD.
well Jays already have Encarnacion to toss balls inaccurately from third. So there goes that…
I just don’t see anything the Brewers can move, unless Gamel can give you 65% of what Fielder will and you use Fielder to fill other holes.
From what I hear, hes got a cannon. I think he has a iron glove to go with it.
Ironically, Keith Law cited his weak arm as a reason he couldn’t be moved to the outfield, but yes he has a cannon. His glove isn’t the problem. Its the throws. He’s one of those guys who does things really well repeatedly and then reverts or something and well, you know.
I realize players go to japan for reasons, but i was really hoping loe would get a shot to start before the trades. With saito taking the 8th and hawkings back and hopefully healthy, He would be my choice should the worst happen. Although, RR said a few weeks ago he is staying in the pen.
and that sinker is so downright nasty.
The guy has pitched well out of the pen but he just doesn’t have the repertoire to start. He still has a lot of value pitching 2 higher leverage relief innings and it would take him too long to get stretched out anyway.
They’re probably looking at out-of-options types like Pat Misch…..
That type of player makes sense for a short term solution. Why settle for the waiver claim money if you can get an actual fringe type of player for a discard?
I wonder if they regret not keeping Capuano about now?
I would imagine the Mets will hold on to Misch, but he’d be a guy who’d fit what the Brewers need. If Mitre doesn’t make the Yankees rotation, he’d be another guy who’d make sense.
You should be permanently banned for this comment alone. Grow up or shut up.
Coming from someone who has expirenced what your implying, I don’t find this funny.
How was he not banned for making a joke about child abuse?
I think he removed it himself before the mods got to it. I’m just going to do my best to ignore him from now on, his whole act is getting tiresome
The Cubs will give you Silva–with Cashner and Wells performing and Looper for insurance we can afford to GIVE him away.
No thanks to Silva or Looper for that matter.
We’re talking about 1-2 starts here. It’s not going to make or break a season. They’ve got the offense that even if Wily Peralta starts and gets shelled, they still have a chance in the game.
Gamel is garbage I watched him at AAA two years ago in Nashville then managed to see him bat several times at miller park. Every scout says he can rake, yet I don’t see it. He dumb as a box of rocks. In nashville I managed to watch him trip over thrid base twice in one inning.
Nothing better than watching two homosexuals complain about a trade they BOTH have not control of.
As has been mentioned previously, we’re talking about 1-2 starts that Greinke will miss. How can you seriously say that the season is coming undone? Marcum’s stiffness was minor and is already a non-issue and if he stays healthy for the majority of the season, they’re still in great shape. Greinke’s broken rib won’t be a nagging injury due to the nature of it, so I guess I don’t see where all the naysayers are coming from. 2 starts from Willy Peralta is not the end of the world, since they’re going to be against garbage teams (Nationals, Pirates) who the Brewers will explode against anyway and keep them in the game no matter how bad Peralta pitches.
And worst case scenario, they lose those two games. Yep, better call it a season and trade the whole big league roster for prospects. Sigh.
this again? after guys posted how sensitive the were about a comment like this yesterday, you have the gul to bring up social services and mock children who have to suffer child abuse??
seriously whats wrong with you
