They just lost one of the best starters in the National League, but the Cardinals are eyeing relievers as they aim to restore pitching depth, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (on Twitter). The Cardinals, who lost Adam Wainwright to season-ending Tommy John surgery, are now more inclined to pursue a reliever than a starter.
GM John Mozeliak has said that he'll evaluate in-house options before pursuing pitching and maintained that talk of trades or signings is "still a little premature." The Cardinals' need for pitching became more pronounced when Chris Carpenter's hamstring started acting up last week. There's no timetable for his return at the moment.
MLBTR's Mike Axisa listed some potentially available starting pitchers last month.
Ferrariman
just use Eduardo Sanchez, he’s better than atleast half the junk pitchers left…(unless there referring to a trade or a swingman).
godzillacub
Looks like Mozeliak is going to join Cashman in the “can he pitch?” department.
As a Cubs fan, I would be willing to break up the 4 Carloses and package up Silva for free. I’d even include shipping.

Can (Insert Player Here) pitch?
-J. Mozeliak

Hey, Mo. Get your own damn line. That one’s mine.

Ok guys, we are kind of over-doing the Carpenter injury. The Cardinals need for pitching did not become “more pronounced” since his injury. The only thing this news leads me to believe, is that they are planning on Mclellan taking the 5th spot in the rotation. He was a key member of the bullpen last year, and by taking him to the rotation the BP is weaker. Makes sense, although I don’t see anyone being available that could contribute more than some of the AAA arms.
Andy Mc
Brett Cecil + Jason Frasor ++ for…
Lunchbox45
That would be perfect…. Throw in David Cooper for good measure
Andy Mc
I think it would take one of the top catching prospects, not because STL needs catching, but because we have some really good ones.
Cecil + d’Arnaud + Frasor + Janssen = Rasmus?
I think it makes sense for both sides.
sam_lammert
no
Andy Mc
Why not? lol
Ferrariman
because anyone with a brain knows that by know Rasmus isn’t and really never was available. Just moronic fans like yourself trying to go bottomfishing and Mozeliak wasn’t biting. Think about the moves STL made this offseason. Bringing in 2 defensive liabilites, most notably Berkman to play right field, think there gonna sell their centerfielder out of the bloom? I know your still probably fantasizing but common sense needs to kick in at some point…
Lunchbox45
If they need pitching and they need to give pujols a winning environment what else can they trade?
No need to get upset…it’s not like he low balled the deal
Cecil, darnaud ,frasor, would be pretty fair IMO.

Everyone should be available if the price is right. But it’s not just matching up on overall talent, it’s also where they’re at presently. Rasmus should step his game up another level this year and be one of the top 5 CFers in the game and he’s not even at Arb 1 yet. While the Jays may match up the overall talent (or even overpay slightly), they’d have to match up for this year, which is what the Cards, who aren’t in a rebuilding mode, are concerned with first and foremost.
It’d take a major overpay both in terms of present talent and future talent to acquire Rasmus, which is a price AA (or any other GM) shouldn’t be willing to pay (at least at this time, it’s just Spring Training after all) if they have the best interests of their club in mind. Come June, things might be different. But for now, Rasmus deal talks are dilusional, to say the least.

Agreed, all this tells us is that KMac looks like a lock for the 5th starter’s spot. Sorry Millwood.
I’d like to see Salas step up and take that bullpen spot with Boggs being bumped to the setup role.
Anthony
George Sherrill, Scott Linebrink, Brandon Beachy, Kenshin Kawakami, Nate McLouth, Matt Young, Todd Redmond, Brian Snitker, and Brooks Conrad for Colby Rasmus and cash.
Slopeboy
Can anyone of them pitch?
Signed John Mo
Anthony
McLouth frequently throws a solid 10-hop knuckleball from CF to both dugouts on a consistent basis during games.
Jslonim2
Yea but he can hit
godzillacub
Oh, the dreaded McLouth McDribble . . . the most fearsome pitch since the underhand toss in Rookie of the Year!
Colin Artinger
No! You damn Braves fans are not prying Colby away and why would we give you cash in a hypothetical trade?
Ferrariman
you can’t take 10 piles of poop, smash it together, and hope it gives you a piece of gold. doesn’t work that way. get lost.
grant77
The Jays have quite a collection of extra bullpen arms ranging from good set-up men to depth guys. I’m sure one of them would fit the Cards needs.
BMH
this makes about zero sense
Slopeboy
Would really like to see the Cards sign Millwood, just to witness Duncan perform another miracle.
Slopeboy
Oh wait… Did the Indians finally sign him ?
The_BiRDS
Cards could probably sign Jeremy Bonderman on the cheap, considering he has almost called it a year.
godzillacub
I still have no worries about the Cardinals pitching. Dave Duncan will pull a pitcher off the heap (Bonderman, as you mentioned), teach him the splitter/sinker, and he’ll get a 15-8 record with a 3.50 – 4.00 ERA out of him.
alexchicago14
this headline should simply say ‘cards need pitching help!’ maybe they can get ankiel back and he can pitch
