The latest on the Cardinals, as third baseman David Freese makes his first spring start…
- Freese is now represented by CAA, tweets the agency. Phil Tannenbaum was his previous agent. Freese, 28 next month, is a ways off from arbitration eligibility.
- Chris Carpenter felt a twinge in his left hamstring during yesterday's bullpen session, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He's looking doubtful to start Friday, but there's no timetable for his return. Carpenter's hamstring first became a concern six days ago in a start against the Marlins. Perhaps by the weekend the Cardinals will decide whether to explore external options with Adam Wainwright out of the season and Carpenter's status unknown.
- Kiko Calero's slider looked good in his Cardinals audition, tweets SI's Jon Heyman, but the team told the righty they have a full roster.

As a Reds fan, I wasn’t really expecting a repeat division title since I thought the Cards played subpar in 2010. With Wainwright gone, and now a possible Carpenter injury, it almost certainly seems that it will be the Reds or Brewers in 2011.

Yeah, I can’t believe the Reds won the division in March this year. It’s kind of like last year when the Cardinals had it wrapped up before the season started……..wait a minute…..

Really? Did I even remotely say that? Let me read it again to make sure — nope. 😉

The Cardinals already planned on Carpenter missing a start before his bullpen session. They need to just shut him down for about a week, then start things up again. He could still be ready for opening day after taking a week off. The way he wore down toward the end of last year, it won’t hurt my feelings to take a few meaningless innings off his arm in spring training.

Feel bad for the Cards I guess the winning days are numbered especially if Pujols leaves…

You know who has a great hamstring right now? Kevin Slowey. The Cardinals should look into it.

I think Dave Duncan would quit if the Cardinals traded for a starting pitcher who had a 28.3% ground ball rate last year.

At least there would be more balls that avoid our questionable infield and end up being tracked down by our stellar outfield… er, wait…
