The Orioles have interest in Vladimir Guerrero, but their offer sits in the $4.5-5MM range and the nine-time All-Star is looking for more. ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported over the weekend that the Orioles are being told Guerrero has an $8MM offer in hand from an unknown team.
Guerrero doesn't have that many suitors to begin with, since he's a DH at this point in his career. The 35-year-old can hit – he won his ninth Silver Slugger last year after clubbing 29 homers – but teams with DHs probably don't have room for him. That means the Rays aren't interested and leaves the Blue Jays, Angels and Rangers as the most logical potential suitors outside of Baltimore.
So let's answer the $8MM question…
Kickme Inthenads
If you voted anything other than “There is no 8M dollar offer”, punch yourself in the face.
Smrtbusnisman04
Why wouldn’t Toronto want him? Aren’t they trying to switch Adam Lind to 1B and Jose Bautista to 3B?
Plus, they can fill him in a DH.
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
they’re giving encarnacion a try at dh
BlueJaysFTW
AA does not want to give up any picks for the upcoming draft. Second, AA has already said EE is fine at DH.
ellisburks
Son of a Bi*ch that hurt!

How do I write in “2008 Yankees.”
RICH HUDZINSKI
HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE VLADDIE OF DISHONESTY. LIKE 5 MIL IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ONE HUMAN BEING THAT HAS MADE 118 MILLION DOLLARS OVER THE PAST 14 YEARS! He is not a money hoarding MAN CHILD who is a member of “THE MOST PATHETIC KNOWN MILLIONAIRES CLUB” (along with OLLIE PEREZ, LUIS CASTILLO and so on). He just has not signed that offer that almost doubles the Orioles, even though the 8 MIL offer has to come from a legit contender. Vladdie does not think everyone following his career are complete idiots.
Mike Bonsiero
I think you need to take a deep breath. It’s a negotiation tactic, not some insult to working class people everywhere.
woadude
Ok, I wont consider the Mariners needing an impact bat, Guerrero is getting the Dye treatment, I get it.
joe
should ORioles Management punch themselves in the face now? cause they believed it
twins33
I think it’d be stupid for any team to offer him that much at this point, which is why I don’t believe it’s true. He’s going to have to take a lot less if he wants to play this year. Spring Training is almost here and he’s lucky the O’s are offering around 5.
mikeclyne
If there were a $8 mil offer, he would have signed already….unless it is Cle, Pit or KC or in Japan…
mic
I was thinking the same thing. If he isn’t all over an $8mil offer at this point, it’s because there is no Hispanic community in Fukuoka Japan!
Moo
Cleveland wouldn’t have been willing to give out nearly that much. They’re stuck with Hafner at DH, aren’t competing and seem to be adding people on minor league deals. KC wouldn’t be paying that much either, not with Kila on the 25 man.
I don’t think this offer exists.
Smrtbusnisman04
The Pirates aren’t stupid to waste $8 million plus a 1st Round pick on a 36 year old OF who can no longer play the outfield!!
cookmeister
their pick is protected
budman3
Which would mean it’s not about the money but wanting to play for a ring. And probably why he hasn’t signed with the Orioles yet too.
If he doesn’t get that team to make an offer, he will settle for the team that offers the most, or that he feels comfortable playing with or he just may sit out.
Jason Klinger
It’s the Nats. They’ll offer any amount to anyone. :/
Jason S
Ha, How about the Nationals? They seem to be throwing retarded money at anything with a heartbeat?
iancahill
I thought the same thing!
gwells
no NL team would offer him anything.
he’s more likely to get an offer from the redskins than the nationals.
mic
My first thought was Duh! The Nationals don’t need a DH! After furthur review I concluded that $8mil. (in play money), is about what Washington would pay for someone to PH a few times a week and DH a dozen games. After all everyone else in D.C. is paid 10 times what their actually worth.
RahZid
And that’s why my first reaction was the Angels. (See Wells, Vernon)
deere5800
It’s gotta be the Angels, but Guerrero’s holding out for a four year deal, which the Angels will eventually agree to
Motor_City_Bombshell
Four years, $86 million sounds about right. If the Angels are paying Wells, they gotta pay Guerrero, it’s only fair, right?
neoncactus
I think they’re waiting for Toronto to sign him to the deal first and then trade for him.
Michael Ladwig
If I were a GM, I’d offer him 6 mil, honestly, deflated from a 8-10 mil offer by the poor market. Cause remember, this is Vlad Guerrero, he ain’t no scrub, this is a former MVP who’s career low ops is .794 and second worst is .841. That’s the BOTTOM of his production, one more time: he ain’t no scrub.
twins33
He isn’t a scrub, but it’s February 3rd. Spring Training is right around the corner and not many teams need DH’s. Both of those things drop his value a lot. 5-6 at this point just seems to high to me. If it was a month or two ago, I could see 6-8, but the price is dropping the longer he waits.
Obviously there could be stupid desperation by some GM out there, but I think he’s lucky that there’s a 5 million dollar deal on the table this far into the offseason.
Matt
Vlad doesn’t really have much credibility on MLBTR, does he? ahaha come on Vlad! No one believes that you would get offered that much!
TwinsVet
The only way he has an $8M offer in hand is if it’s 2-year deal.
JayTeam
I’m guessing you’re right, with the 2nd year probably a club/mutual option.
Giorgi Almonte
just two choises…other..or..theres no offer!!
Chris Otto
I think it’s one of the “dregs” teams, trying desperately to generate some buzz and add some punch to the lineup for one year. … So I’d say it’s Indians or Mariners.
floryphoto
Or someone with a LH DH could have offered him that to platoon and he wants a starting job. But even then I doubt he got an offer that high.
Kickme Inthenads
Vlad’s agent is doing his best Scott Boras impression. If Boras couldn’t get Manny more than 2M, Vlady is going to have a hard time getting 4 times that.
tigers06
vlad is also a few years younger, had a better year than manny last year, and manny is bad in the club house!
monkeyspanked
Yeah for a DH, I’d rather have Vlad than Manny. Manny’s more headcase than talent now. But I think Vlad is closer to 40 years old than his official record says.
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
In a down year Manny had a .382 wOBA and 141 wRC+
In a bounceback season Vlad had a .360 wOBA and 121 wRC+
bluejaysstatsgeek
Last night on the FAN590 in Toronto, John Farrell indicated that one of the uncertainties that the Jay’s need to resolve is who will hit behind Bautista to protect him. Depending on how the Jays are doing at the deadline, he could also be a trade chip. Don’t count out the Jays. AND, if Vlad had an $8MM offer and hadn’t jumped on it, it could be because it is from the Jays, who sometimes face problems convincing players spending half their season in a foreign country.
whitesoxfan424
Good point, I remember when Alexei Ramirez couldn’t travel with the team to Toronto a few years back because he wouldn’t have been allowed back into the US or something along those lines. Anyone know Guerrero’s visa / passport status/information?
snaketrain
lexi had cuban issues – vlad played AL last year and had no issues w/ Toronto, so i assume vlad’s s* is in order, and therefore he would not be subject to the same immigration hooha lexi was.
Spencer Estey
lol guys: Vladimir Guerrero played in Montreal for parts of 8 seasons, this is in no way a visa issue.
redsox927
hahahaha i was just thinking the same thing
costumedanceguy
I think the Blue Jays were the one who offered him the money too. 8 million is a lot, but if Vlad comes out hitting, how can you not deny that it was a great offer?
BlueJaysFTW
He played in Montreal for years. Nothing to do with playing in a foreign country. If Jays offered him 8 MM, he would have accepted instantly because of the other offers that were out there.
putitontheboard
Still has a home in the Montreal area, actually.
$1545094
can’t blame him for saying he has $8 MIL offer and not wanting to go to Baltimore. why would he want to go there? maybe he wants to win, and that’s not happening in Baltimore.
he is more than likely waiting and hoping another team steps up. might even be worth it for him to just wait even if it lasts into the season. injuries happen. he wouldn’t get $8 MIL then, but he could still get PAID for the time he would be with the new team.
mic
Get in your last Baltimore bashing while you can. I’ll bet you were one of those saying, “Tampa Bay has no shot at a World Series, ever!” in February 2008.
BlueJaysFTW
Okay Baltimore is no where near making the playoffs. O’s fans are so blinded because they think their manager has magical powers that will put them over the top. Really, they are just an awful team.
Ryan Saotome
Baltimore has a better team this year than the Blue Jays, thats for sure. Don’t let the fact they’ve been bad the last 10 years cloud the fact they’ve been insanely improved ever since Showalter took over.
Fangaffes
Classic case of an agent overplaying his hand.
Chris White
Baltimore should tell Vlad that the offer will only be on the table another week or so, then they will pull it and move on. Vlady would be a nice add for the Orioles, but it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t want to play in Baltimore; he didn’t want to four years ago, and I don’t think he wants to now. While it would be nice to have him in the lineup, he clearly is on the decline. The Orioles really don’t need him, and will be fine without him.
thejohnoparty
anyone else thing that Vladi’s gettin cheated here? he’s always been a great player, just had an MVP caliber year and yet hes not even worth 8 mil? i don’t get it.
if i were him i’d just say “screw u all, i’m joining the the best team in the NL(phils..who did put an offer) and beat w/e DH you have in the World Series.
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
he just had an MVP caliber year? really?
tigers06
top ten in the AL
thejohnoparty
let me rephrase that.. he had a Rangers MVP caliber season(and that was a team that had one of the best offenses). let’s face it. Hamilton and Vladi were in the top 3(if not the best) 3-4 combos in baseball last year and probably would’ve been even better if Hamilton hadn’t missed the last month of the season. i just think he’s worth the money.
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
naaaah… Vlad was only above average. .841 OPS is nothing to scoff at, but its not fantastic.
02waster
Must have been in a bomb shelter underground during 2010
mic
God, I hope your 2nd best team in the NL does just that! While your at it throw about 5 more years at Rollins!
Brendan Daly
hahaha. yeah. 2nd best nl team. hilarious! but honestly? if the phils threw 3-4mil at him and put him in the platoon for both corners (matching him up with the best defensive right fielder [Francisco] of the rest of the group) he could absolutely be an impact player. So he plays ever third of fourth game, is the first guy off the bench (if our starters ever come out, HA!) and is our dh in interleague and the ws. Think about that line up! Think about having right handed power, with that hitting style, behind howard! He’s got the leadership and clubhouse qualities to be a fit, and more than anything, I’d bet he wants to be on a competitor. The Phils won’t do it, but damn they should.
Brendan Daly
The phils put up an offer?!
Slopeboy
Vlad will be 36 in two weeks, he made $5MM last year. He’s dithering about a $3MM raise? Come on now! If that offer’s legit, he’d be a fool not to snap it up !
Kevin Bass
I picked, “There is no 8M dollar offer”. If there was a 8M offer on the table, he would have taken it by now. This is just a marketing plow by his agent in an attempt to make the Orioles bid against themselves or to force a team who needs a DH to rush out the match or exceed the 8M offer.
Drisco Inferno
Maybe it’s 8M in Canadian money!
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
thats more than 8M in American
Steelslayer
Yeah dude….you should check the exchange rates its on par or above the once mighty “greenback”.
BlueJaysFTW
Love how a lot of Americans think their currency is worth much more than any other currency outside their country. LOL
GoAwayNow
I love how Canadians generalize….
bb
that itself was also a generalization lol
GoAwayNow
You noticed huh? :p
BlueJaysFTW
I never said “all Americans” and I didn’t say “Americans,” I said “a lot of Americans.” Because it is true. A lot of Americans presume that their currency is much more valuable than any other. Learn to read.
GoAwayNow
lol Its still a generalization fool. All = vast generalization, “a lot” slightly smaller one. Nice try though!
BlueJaysFTW
No. “All” is a generalization because it means I am talking about everyone. “A lot” is completely ambiguous, it does not indicate majority or minority, it simply means many. If there were 1 million apples, and I said I have a lot of those apples, that does not mean I have 900 000 apples like you think. That could mean I have 100 apples. And that is completely true, many Americans tend to boast about the worth of their currency relative to other country’s. Again, learn to interpret what people are saying.
GoAwayNow
Your analogy is imprecise. But once again, nice try.
In the future, if you’re worried about about being interpreted clearly, write what you mean. Or leave the societal commentary off the baseball rumor site. Whichever.
BlueJaysFTW
No. My analogy is exactly right. “A lot” is not exact at all, it could mean any amount. If you truly think a lot means just short of all, you’re definitely misinformed and just posturing at this point.
Second, I said exactly what I meant. I did not avoid anything or imply anything. I said pretty explicitly that many Americans do presumptively boast about the value of their currency, How is that not writing what I “mean”? LOL.
Third, if I didn’t distinguish between “a lot” and “all” for you (“societal commentary” if that’s what you think I’m doing, LMAO, whatever that means), you would not know the difference. But now you do, so be more thankful you don’t have to embarrass yourself somewhere else in the future.
Fourth, I will take from your lack of any argument or anything in your last post that you know I;m right and have conceded.
GoAwayNow
Lol calm down. You Canadians are so angry.
BlueJaysFTW
Not angry at all. LOL. I’m happy, happy that I could enlighten a narrow-minded senseless person like yourself. And nice generalization there.
GoAwayNow
Also your analogy is poor because in the anology your are talking specifically about quatity. Had you said “A lot of apples are green” that would have been a better example.
Secondly, where are all these Americans boasting of the strength of the dollar? Trust me, we know our economy is hurting.
Third, you are still making a generalization. Despite you distinguishing all and a lot. Keep rpeating it. Doesn’t change your facts.
Fourth, I’m not going to respond to this again. So go away.
BlueJaysFTW
Analogy is not poor at all, I was also talking about quantity when talking about Americans who boast about their currency. And I am not talking just about now, Americans have always boasted about their currency. What facts lol? It is a FACT that many Americans blindly praise the worth of their dollar. Fourth, you are not going to respond again because your argument has been refuted and your words no longer hold water.
birdwatcher2
“Vladdy, take the deal !” Sincerely, Jermaine Dye. Why would anyone pay him more than a few million bucks. How about $1 milion base and $1 million for every 100 AB’s.
harmony55
Perhaps at this point in his career Vladimir Guerrero would rather play for a winner than take an $8 million offer from any MLB team.
If Guerrero has an $8 million offer, it may be from a Japanese team,
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
Darvish, the best japanese pitcher earns the equivalent of 6M,
salaries aren’t nearly as overblown in NPB as they are in MLB
Joseph Horan
Isn’t it possible or even likely that the 8 million dollar offer includes 4 million guaranteed and 4 million if he reaches, say, 550 PA’s. That would explain it, right? Not sure why people haven’t realized the mystery offer could be something like that. And I wouldn’t be surprised if its the Rangers because they are so secretive. If they moved Napoli to be their second catcher they could find time for Vlad to play DH for at least 70 games and more in the event of injury. But it only seems likely if they want to trade David Murphy.
cookmeister
what about Young though? the Rangers have a lot of people that are going to be scrapping for at bats this year
tigers06
funny people think vlad isnt worth 8mil? .300, 29 hm, 115rbi 175 hits last year, as a DH why not, if your not gonna pay him that dollar your not gonna get what u can out of him. do you really think manny is gonna be MVP type of player only playin for 2mil? maybe if he was gettin 8+mill he would be
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
wtf? how does manny’s salary dictate his production? you a fortune teller or something?
and vlad posted a .841 OPS last year. thats not worth 8M, especially if he can’t play the field.
tigers06
do u belive manny will be manny only being paid 2mil? if so your sick in the head and need to forget about baseball
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
whether or not “manny will be manny”, he’ll still post a better OPS than Vlad
tigers06
i bet he dont hit .260 with more than 10 to 15 bombs and 50 RBIs
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
please stop using batting average as a tool of comparison. use OBP.
and don’t use counting stats either. that depends on at-bats, which depends on whether maddon plays manny everyday or not
tigers06
jus wait til the end of the season you see wow that guy on mlb trade rumors was right
tigers06
arod is 35 do you think hes worth 27.5mil?
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
what’s your point? just because arod got a terrible contract, its okay to overpay for vlad?
tigers06
over pay for a .300 30bomb 100 RBI guy 8 mil for 1yr, i could see if it was 4 or 5 year then maybe 5mil but for 1 yr 8 mil for that guy is like a sore dick u cant beat it
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
for a full time DH, his is slugging is only average and his on-base percentage is sub-par
tigers06
yea thats y its 8 mil not 15 mil cuz that sats r there jus not at the very top of the list
Chris Solberg
The results of the survey are pretty funny. He had nice stats last year, but remember that he played half his games in hitter-friendly Arlington and his second half was very different from his first half last season. OPS split alone was .919(1st)/.748(2nd). He also didn’t look that good in the playoffs.
FrankTheFunkasaurusRex
yeah overall his stats were only above average, not fantastic or MVP level.
Vlad should just take the 5M from the O’s. Hes not getting anything more
Ryan Saotome
Camden Yards is just as hitter friendly if not more hitter friendly than Arlington Park
Thurman8er
I’m still trying to figure out why the Rangers passed on Vlad. I watched him deteriorate in Anaheim, but grabbed him cheap in my fantasy league because I remembered watching him rake in Texas. He’s certainly not a clubhouse problem…in fact, his mama’s cooking makes him a favorite. So Texas may still be in the hunt, Michael Young notwithstanding. But I think it’s a ploy…and the O’s will end up with him for around $5 million.
start_wearing_purple
Probably because they didn’t want a full time DH. Beltre can potentially equal Guerrero’s offense while seriously upgrading the Rangers infield defense. Now they can have a rotating DH and give more rest to regulars.
Thurman8er
I think you’re right…they think that Beltre will come close to Vlad’s numbers. And I think they are going to be WOEfully disappointed.
Clark
You obviously didn’t watch the second half of the Rangers season or, more specifically, the playoffs. Vlad started off last year on fire and made the Angels look really foolish for letting him walk. But as the season wore on, he looked worse and worse at the plate. By September he didn’t even resemble the old Vlad anymore. Not only did his HR output and AVG. take a big plunge, but he stopped even hitting the ball hard- WAY too many weak ground-outs to 3B and strikeouts guessing. In the first half of the season, there wasn’t a single Ranger hitter I wanted up in crunch time more than Vlad. By the end of the season, I cringed every time he came up to bat. He regressed that much. He looked every bit the washed up player by October. There is absolutely no way he puts up better numbers than Beltre. I still love Vlad, but that’s not happening. .
fasfsfadfaa
How much you want to bet Buster Olney made this up, like he makes up most of his information?
Mike Bonsiero
I doubt he was the one who made it up. More likely he was fed it by someone close to Guerrero. What would Olney have to gain?
bosoque
I thought we decided that the Phillies were the “mystery team”?
Ryan
I would like that, but not for $8M.
Ryan Saotome
There is absolutely no reason to believe any NL team would sign him. DH’s don’t play in the NL, and he killed his value to any NL team after his play in the outfield in the world series
Smrtbusnisman04
I apologize. They wouldn’t lose a 1st round pick.
vonhayesdays
damn that does have a certain ring to it, bring vlad to philly
vonhayesdays
we still can out pace the peso
Brit Finnegan
This is as ridiculous as Lance Berkman getting 8 mil to be an outfielder for the Cardinals. No one is going to pay 8 mil for a broke defender and deteriorating offensive guy, unless you are the Cardinals. I guess Lance was more important than getting Pujols signed. So my vote goes to the Cardinals as the other team, or there wasn’t an 8mil offer.
MadmanTX
I voted for there is no offer before I even saw the choices, but part of me still thinks if such an offer exists, it would come from a delusional owner. I would have said only Uncle Drayton and the Astros would make such an offer to have Vlad pinch hit off the bench, (God help us) play the outfield with Pence and Lee (to have the slowest corner outfielders in baseball) or to have him DH during interleague games in AL parks. Since the Wells trade though, I might have to include the Angels with the Astros as the wackiest teams to make such an offer.
pbpsean
Rangers offered $8.5 million and he turned it down. Not a good decision it appears.
Dev0
My thing about this is the following if there is a 8 mil offer on the table why hasn’t he just taken it? Thats a good deal for him and waiting on it could make him miss out.
Tim
Maybe the offer is with the Yomiuri Giants. Vlad is wanting a bunch latino players being in the clubhouse. Seems like a win-win-win.
basemonkey
This poll result is hilarious. I hope Vlad’s agent sees this.
Derek Lubkiwski
If he has an 8 million dollar offer on the table why doesnt he take it haha if it is true than the only team i can see it being is the royals, and i dont think he wants to hit there
jgmaynard
You know, I had thought all day that it was “There is no $8 offer,” and that if there were one, there is no way it would be an NL team. But, now that I have read the Phillies are interested in Gary Matthews, Jr., they are back in the running in my mind for the mystery contract. If half or so of that is in the form of incentives, that may make more sense for them than Matthews… Just MNSHO.
