Javier Vazquez wants a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. The right-hander could be looking to re-establish his value and hit the open market a year from now in search of a bigger payday.
Vazquez has turned down at least one offer worth about $20MM over two years, according to Stark. The Nationals, Cubs and Rockies have expressed interest in Vazquez, but another club appears to be in the lead for his services.
Talks with the Marlins have gotten "hot," according to Stark. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports confirms on Twitter that the sides had extensive discussions about a deal. We heard last week that there's mutual interest between the team and the pitcher, partly since the Marlins play relatively close to Vazquez's native Puerto Rico.
The Yankees offered Vazquez arbitration, but he appears to have agreed to turn it down and, because he is a Type B free agent, no team will have to surrender a pick to sign the 34-year-old.

1 year 5 million is more than enough in my mind.

I say he signs with us on a deal maybe a tad more than that…But oh my goodness we’re going to be so much more improved next season, less strikeouts, better speed and defense and a MUCH revamped pen. Webb/Mujica/Nunez/Dunn/Sanches/Hensley/Richardson and a rotation of Josh, Ricky, Anibal, Javier, and Alex…Our lineup is awesome…I still think we finish 3rd in the division, but with a much much better and more improved team.
OptimisticMarlinsFan
Definitely much better overall but I still think they need to sign 2 starters..I really didn’t see enough from Alex to think he can be consistent enough to hold down that 5th starter spot..although, he would probably be much better than Volstad lol. I would love to see them sign Vazquez and Brandon Webb..if Webb isn’t looking for too much.

meant to hit “reply”, not like. i don’t see them going after anyone else. chris ended the year really well. the marlins don’t really do the injured player thing. i am curious to see what webb will do this coming year though. i think that their rotation and bullpen looks strong if they get this done, with a fall back pitcher in sanabia if volstad is shaky.
fishfan4life
If they sign Vasquez then I guess Sanabia is gonna be a long guy in the BP.
Dave_Gershman
I’d give that job to Volstad
fishfan4life
Maybe if he has an awful Spring…but considering he was a 1st round pick out of HS and is still young, they’ll give him a shot. And he ended last season on a tear.

Volstad started to look good towards the end, but then again, Sanabia had some great games. When Volstad is on though, he is the guy. I dont see Brandon Webb being an option, he had said he is seeking a large deal (especially with guys like Ben Sheets and Rich Harden signing such big deals) but i’d really like to see Vasquez. I also agree there is a good chance they finish third, but they have a good chance of everything clicking and making it further. but everything has to click the right way…

No easier way than going to the most extreme pitchers park in Baseball, (aside from possibly the Twins new field) Petco park.
He would be a very good fit on a 1-year deal as a Padre.

I refuse to believe he turned down 2/20 or more. After the year he had, that would be a Godsend for him.
Agreed though, Mickey. But most rehabbing pitchers fit into San Diego’s plans if the price is right. They line up to pitch at Petco. I wonder if Target Field will start to get the same reputation. I wouldn’t mind Vazquez (or Webb) on a 1 year/$5M deal.
fishfan4life
What happened to my same old, cheapskate Marlins? Would love to have him here on a 1 year deal.

Hopefully they’re dead š
I agree, sign this man.

It doesn’t say anything in the Stark article about turning down a 2-year/$20MM deal, unless I missed it?
OptimisticMarlinsFan
I didn’t see it in that article but I was just looking at the MLB rumors on ESPN Insider and I read this: “Stark mentions that Vazquez has already turned down at least one multi-year offer believed to be worth $20 million over two years, and that the Florida Marlins, Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies have already expressed interest.”, but they also linked the same Stark article as above so I don’t know where they are seeing this..
Ferrariman
Maybe Tim offered Vazquez 2yr/20million to work at MLBTR, cuz i can’t find where he turned down this offer.
adammyst
Supposedly he had agreed with the Yanks to turn down the arbitration so that they could get a pick. That’s lame, but whatever.

wow, is this the marlins that i have rooted for all these years? i know it is no 2003, but it feels good.
ludafish
Yeah if they actually go out and spend a good 5million on this guy it will feel pretty good. obviously it will feel better if he does well, but i like seeing the marlins actually make moves to improve the team
elscorcho the marlin
that is what i think they are doing, trying to improve the team. the marlins of last year picked up nate (not much to feel good about there). hell, it feels good that they are even trying to get him. javy is a good nl pitcher, proven.

javier vasquez would be a huge add for the marlins. they should get some insurance after this though. i dont think they need to sign brandon webb. too many questions with him. one guy i think makes sense for the marlins is chris capuano. he is left handed and looked good last year coming back from tommy john surgery.
