SATURDAY, 1:44am: In a deal for Maholm, the Pirates want a starting pitcher who is ready to contribute, two high-ranking team sources told Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
FRIDAY, 8:23pm: The Dodgers and Pirates aren't necessarily close to a Maholm deal, but the sides believe there's a genuine possibility that a trade happens, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
4:19pm: The Padres are not close to acquiring Maholm, according to Kovacevic (Twitter link).
3:46pm: The Dodgers and Padres are not the only clubs discussing deals with the Pirates, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (on Twitter). The Mets appear to be involved in discussions for Maholm, according to Scott Miller of CBS Sports.
3:12pm: The two teams look close to a deal, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (on Twitter).
3:10pm: The Padres are discussing Maholm with the Pirates, according to Scott Miller of CBS Sports (on Twitter).
2:59: The Pirates are "close" to trading Maholm, according to Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio (on Twitter). However, Tom Krasovic of AOL FanHouse hears that the Padres are not discussing a deal for Maholm (Twitter link). Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Padres are making progress on a Maholm deal (Twitter link).
2:36pm: The Padres are discussing Maholm with the Pirates, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
1:29pm: The Pirates are willing to trade a starting pitcher for the right price, GM Neal Huntington told Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Huntington referred to starters close to free agency, which implies Paul Maholm or Zach Duke.
Kovacevic figures Maholm to be more popular than Duke, since the latter spent time on the DL this year with an elbow strain. Maholm is signed reasonably through next year with a club option for 2012, making him appealing to the Dodgers. The Mets, Cardinals, Padres, Twins, and Tigers may also be in the hunt for a starter.
Infield Fly
Lovely. I can just hear the excitement in the Mets’ front office: “A deal like this is not likely to help us much. Let’s DO it!!”
bigpelflikesike123
I actually diagree… any trade for a starting pitcher would make me happy because it shows the front office cares (even though they obviously do not because they have literally sat back and done nothing while their two biggest rivals got infinitely better)
Kevin
So does the pitcher in the upper left have a boner or what?

Paul Maholm or Zach Duke? now the trade deadline is heating up! montero for…
John Sparrow
Well, everyone knew this for months… this is a slow deadline, or this wouldn’t be at the top for this long!
formerdraftpick
Duke would be perfect for Texas where he was born, raised, and still lives. Could there be a match? Oh yeah.
larjones
Maholm is MAYBE a 5th starter. Look at his stats. Walks too many, doesn’t miss enough bats……Brett Myers is the guy they needed. A solid #3 guy. Has been pitching very well this year. I don’t think they have the ammo to pull that off though.
mauerfan
Neither are appealing.
Stevo71
Rangers: Feldman and a prospect to the Pirates for Zach Duke. Just an idea. Could that work?
TBay Rays
Are we really discussing Zach Duke and Paul Malholm at the trade deadline?!?! This isn’t the last round of a 12-team fantasy league draft!…is it?
mauerfan
I agree wholeheartedly.
Table
OMG, stop citing his 2012 option as an asset, it’s for 9 mill, that is a negative.
Greg Zakwin
Maholm’s skill level is the biggest negative.
Garren
I’m not sure how you feel getting Maholm for 9 million is a negative. The past two years he’s been worth 2.8 and 3.2 WAR, which equates to salaries of 12.5 and 14.4 million dollars. Comparing him to someone just dealt for instance, he’s historically been a better pitcher than Edwin Jackson, and has been considerably better than him this year.
Just because his Win/Loss record isn’t outstanding doesn’t mean he doesn’t carry value. Thanks for your input though.
louis_09
I don’t understand how the $9m TEAM option is a negative. They very well may be able to extend him, throwing the option out the window.
I think the biggest problem the starting pitchers have in Pittsburgh is their coach, Joe Kerrigan. He’s terrible. I feel that either of these pitchers, if moved to a high quality club such as Texas, will be an asset. In Pittsburgh they get no coaching, and little defense or run support — that would hinder anyone.
Greg Zakwin
Believe me, we aren’t looking at win/loss record.
But thanks for YOUR input.
Garren
Could you tell me what you are looking at then? Outside of the obvious “skill level” statistic that you seem to feel is his biggest negative.
All that I wanted to point out was that his 9 mill 2012 team option was certainly not a negative, unless he’s due for some severe regression over the next two seasons.
Greg Zakwin
He’s a back end of the rotation starter, which the Dodgers have plenty of, guys they can use without trading away assets and who are cheaper than Maholm.
Career FIP, xFIP, and tERA in the 4’s, only 5.5 K/9 IP while walking 3 per 9. 1.43 career WHIP.
The Dodgers don’t need Maholm, who wouldn’t help much, if at all.
philsWSchamps
Rizzotti for either Duke or Maholm? Either would be better than Kendrick/Blanton as a 4th starter
Dylan
Blanton will be in the rotation regardless because of his contract…and Kendrick has proven himself even though he is not always consistent. What the Phillies need is a big arm in the bullpen to help them get through the late innings.
philsWSchamps
sorry but while I sadly agree about Blanton (he reminds me of Adam Eaton part 2) Kendrick is a really poor man’s Happ which pretty much makes him destitute when you compare him to other 4’s in possible playoff rotations.
Petey Pablo
The Phils don’t have a #4 in their playoff rotation. Doc will pitch on 3 days rest. Philly’s playoff rotation is Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt.
Scott Welp
Yuck. No thank you.
Pittsburgh_Pirates
Yankees are looking like they want to get rid of Montero. Pirates would be more than happy to play him at first base in the future. Lets give them Dotel/Maholm/Duke and Carrasco for him.
louis_09
I don’t see the Yankees valuing what the Pirates have enough to trade Montero to them. Besides, no sense having Montero blocking Alvarez — if he doesn’t shape up (or shape down…literally), he’s going to find himself over at 1B in the near future.
Pittsburgh_Pirates
Yeah that is true. Though trading Dotel and someone else now would be smart since the Pirates dont plan on picking up his option next year..so why not stockpile top prospects. You have to admit if we had Montero and Alvarez on our corners, we would be pretty set for the future
Al Briggs
ah, the ganja you’re smoking must be amazing. care to share?

Or just trade garrett jones instead
Dave_Gershman
Something like Keyvius Sampson and cash could get this deal done. I hope this deal gets done!!!!!!!!!!!
Beersy
I hope that Hoyer would not trade Sampson for Maholm. He is the clubs 3rd best pitching prospect and getting only 2 months out of Maholm just wouldn’t be worth it. Before you say it, the option will not be picked up for 9 million. I realize the Pirates aren’t giving him away, but that seems a little bit much for Maholm.
However if the Padres do acquire him I think Darren Balsley could probably help him alot.
louis_09
Beersy: the option is for 2012 — Maholm is under contract for 2011 as well.
Beersy
Thanks for the contract info. I still don’t see the 2012 option being picked up.
Beersy

Dave_Gershman
Maholm is under contract for this year and next with a Club Option for ’12. I see what you are saying though, regardless, Sampson is good. Well as you said, a change of scenery and Darren Balsley might help Maholm.
Beersy
Thanks for filling me in on the contract. This deal may make even more sense now. With Garlands option almost for sure not being picked up, Maholm can take his spot in the rotation next year if this deal does get done.
Dave_Gershman
Well you got it. And you really don’t think Garland’s option won’t be picked up? If Maholm can make adjustments that Garland, Richard, and Latos made, they have a nice rotation
Beersy

sdsuphilip
no way Pads trade Sampson for a 4rth/5th starter
Ian_Smell
If the Pirates could get Everth Cabrera, that would be amazing.
Tim Valencia
oooh that would be tempting if Cumberland didn’t just rack his leg
Beersy
I don’t think the Padres have given up on Cabrera just yet. He should be in AA or AAA this year if he hadn’t been a Rule 5 pick last year and preformed so well. He just needs a little time to iron things out. As for Cumberland, word is that he doesn’t project as a SS because of his arm. A double play combo of Cabrera and Cumberland 2 or 3 years down the road sounds all right though.
Devern Hansack
Even though Cabrera is struggling, he has significantly more upside than Ronny Cedeno. At this point, Roger Cedeno would probably be a better player than Ronny, despite checking in to Baltimore’s 2007 Spring Training at approximately 475 pounds.
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
ya right they love him and he cost nada
Mark S
the Padres have no reason to move Cabrera. They’d give up Zawadzki first

marinest21
Can someone please take Allan Dykstra off the Padres’ hands?
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
Maholm for Matt Stairs straight up…. sounds about as likely as any trade from the Pirates for Cabrera
P W
Do they seriously need another pitcher?? They already have one of the best staffs in baseball, not like this move would make them any better…possibly worse though.
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
ya they do, take some pressure off the guys who have thrown alot of innings and Chris Youngs been out the whole year..so it would help. Plus the NL West has Alot Alot of left handed bats to face down the stretch
SalvadorM
Cabrera go down to AAA, that’s for sure probably tonight.
bigpat
Pirates need to trade one of Maholm or Duke in my opinion. Maholm has some talent but is just so damn inconsistent. He goes 8-9 innings then gets bombed in his next game, and he’s been up and down his whole career. He and Duke are practically the same person. They need to really keep the ball down in order to have success, and need very good defense.
Paul might not be too bad in San Diego, and for him being inconsistent and pretty much average, he still has value as a young innings eater. Hopefully they will get a decent prospect for him. I’d say his value is equal to Capps if not greater.
D
hope they trade the mediocre twins maholm and duke
pick up some aaa+ prospects and spend the money on sp this offseason
TheReturnOfMrBlanks
This is so great 50% of reporters saying Padres are talking to Pirates 50% saying no truth to that… then they are close to a deal… Corey Brock just said it would make sense if they are..

My guess is that this is a salary dump so that they can free up money for the top two draft picks.
TheLastPirateFan
Padres fans, maholm is better than you think but Neal Huntington will likely not give you maholm for nothing so prepare for something substantial coming back to the pirates
Pirateboss
Fingers crossed but not optimistic…
TheLastPirateFan
Huntington has seemed to get good returns for bad players, for example nyjer Morgan, mclouth, jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez, Ian snell, John grabow, nady, etc. So I’m confident about this

do the padres need more pitching? i would be focused on adding another bat
bigpat
They can have Brandon Moss who’s hitting in AAA… lol.

Pirates do need to get rid of that guy he is just an embarrassment now put him in a Maholm deal and make the deal a little better

With Joe Kerrigan (and Russell & Long) at the helm…Jesus Christ couldn’t be effective as a starting pitcher.
Piratesfan1104
Kerrigan is a very good pitching coach he just needs something to work with and it starts with Morton he better start pitching like he was suppose to
louis_09
Kerrigan is a what?!?!? Look at the starting pitching — Maholm has gone downhill in the 2 years Kerrigan has been there. Duke? Downhill. Ohlendorf? It took until the 2nd half of last year for Kerrigan to decide TO USE HIS SINKER AND 4-SEAMER AT THE SAME TIME. The guy threw 96…and they had him throwing sinkers?!?!? That sure is quality. This DOESN’T start with Morton — I don’t know if he has the fortitude to pitch in the bigs. It STARTS with Kerrigan. Kerrigan was supposed to be this “mechanics guru”, but every pitcher gets sent to AAA “to work on his mechanics”? Pitching in the bigs is NOT just about mechanics…there are pitchers with funky mechanics that WIN. You start playing with mechanics and pitchers are worried about something other than GOING AFTER the hitters. NONE of our pitchers ATTACK batters and I’m going to attribute that to Joe Kerrigan.

Paul maholm is actually a pretty good pitcher he has the potential to be a middle to 2 guy in a rotation he Is a bit inconsistent but he is just as good as Ted lilly

Whatever the Pirates do, they need to get a good shortstop.

uggh should not be for a top pitching prospect, although it would be nice to replace stairs/ salazaar

I hope Maholm learns to throw right handed.
Piratesfan1104
Do the Yankees need a left handed pitcher? i say Pirates give them Maholm for Montero if they do. Then the Pirates can make Montero a first baseman and trade GI Jones next year at the trade deadline for a good starting pitcher

I looked over his stats and they weren’t as bad as I thought, but I don’t know, maybe it just has something to do with getting infield prospects from the Dodgers- see Andy LaRoche.

Trade em both along with Dotel, Lopez, Carrasco, and Doumit.

Perotto is saying the deal with the padres includes a combination of evereth cabrera and wade leblanc which is kind of consistent with the dodgers rumored package of a middle infielder and ely/elbert/mcdonald

Ugh. I like LeBlanc, but even in Petco he gives up homers. Not sure how he will do in PNC, then throw in GAP, Minute Maid and Miller Park as division rivals and if the wind is blowing out, Wrigley. It could be ugly. Can’t we get Stauffer?
