The Giants are interested in MLB home run leader Jose Bautista, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported today that the Blue Jays are asking for elite young players in exchange for Bautista, but the Giants must be getting used to such demands, since they're eyeing other top hitters.
The Giants remain interested in Corey Hart and David DeJesus, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Adam Dunn and Jorge Cantu are also on the team's radar.
Cantu has drawn interest from the Rangers and Angels; the Nationals are reluctant to trade Dunn; the Brewers want Jonathan Sanchez or Madison Bumgarner for Hart; and the Royals have a steep asking price for DeJesus but teams are still interested. None of those bats will come cheap and the Giants know that better than anyone. They're presumably willing to give up talent to improve an offensive attack that ranks ninth in the NL.
The Braves, Padres, White Sox, Rays and Rangers are among the teams that could also be bidding for hitters, so the price could remain high until the July 31st deadline.
Ryan Riddell
I would go all out for Adam Dunn, honestly. You could really solidify a middle of a lineup with Dunn/Huff/Posey/Panda once he gets his stuff together
ajf718
giants wants player under contract.
Ryan Riddell
I’m aware of that. It doesn’t mean I can’t relish in the concept.
Dan Wohl
God damn it, why no mention of Fielder?
billski8
Wheeler for Fielder… put it on the board… CHAMPIONSHIP! (where’s TJ Hooshamazode-WR when you need him?)
adobias
No Way trade for Fielder. He is a Huge fat ass, is slow in the field, and his numbers are worse than the past few years. This trade would be similar to the Barry Zito huge contract….
Zel567
His rbi’s are down, but he’s leading the NL in home runs. He’s also been big his entire career and last week obtained the record for most consecutive games played in Brewer history.
Deric
… do you follow baseball or do you just say what you want? Fielders numbers were up last year from 08.. he also posted his most rbis and best average, also hes not all that slow. Huge fat ass sure, but everything else you said just dumb
Gemini E
His agent is Scott Boras… enough said.
Dan Wohl
I don’t see why that’s relevent. Fielder has a year of arbitration left, so I’m sure the Giants would look at it as a year and a half of him even if they don’t choose to try to sign him to a free agent contract. And besides, why would this scare the Giants in particular? They have shown no reluctance to deal with Boras before (with some unsavory results, admittedly).
BleacherBumSF
trade Thomas Neal and Clayton Tanner for Jayson Werth
The_Thrill_22
Terrible idea. We could just sign him as a free agent, and remember the last Phillie that came to SF?
How has that worked out so far?
BleacherBumSF
werth is a way better all around hitter than rowand and he’s going to be a type A free agent so you could get two high draft picks for him after the season
The_Thrill_22
Yeah that’s nice and all, but apparently the Phils are asking for way too much for him.
theironcow
yeah, Werth’s struggling, wrong time to get him.
ajf718
Every giants fan know if hart is accquire his number will go down in at&t.
Ryan Riddell
It doesn’t help that his K rate is bad and isn’t walking that much. He’s like an Aaron Rowand except he’ll cost an unacceptable amount of prospects instead of money.
magnushanso
And his defense SUCKS.
55saveslives
Hart is Aaron Rowand v2.0
Ryan Riddell
Except Rowand can defend… moderately.
Sniderlover
Hmm… no Bautista? 😛
Ryan Riddell
Hrm… I’m intrigued by this John Bowker character. Apparently in 156 at bats He’s hit 11 Home runs and has a .400 OBP. Sounds like deserves a few starts, eh?
bharsh
The dude is a flat out stud. Unfortunately Bochy isn’t patient enough in young players to give him the chance. dude would go off in a place like Miller Park. Numbers here in AAA Fresno off the charts every year and last year PCL player of the year. I’d hate to lose him, but then again, I’m smart enough to know he’s going to go to waste here in Fresno
Ryan Riddell
Considering the Black Hole they have in RF you would think they would give him a better shot at the big show. Schierholtz is a defensive replacement (at best) and putting Burrell in LF and huff in RF downgrades the defense considerably. a Huff-Torres-Bowker OF is a lot better than what it is now.
The_Thrill_22
Bowker hasn’t been able to hit in the Majors. He’s a career minor league guy.
baseball-reference.com/players/b/bowkejo01.shtml
Jon Orr
NO!!!! he’s a minor leagur hitter, thats it!…the mother fucker cant lay off a inside curveball in the dirt…how many times have u seen major league pitchers throw 3 straight curveballs in the dirt and record a strikeout…let me answer that for u, waaaaaaay to many!
budman3
I think an fair deal would start with Hart and James Shields from the Rays.
aap212
James Shields is a very good starting pitcher with an extremely team-friendly contract with a number of club option years. Corey Hart is a so-so corner bat with little defensive value and coming up on free agency. So no.
jredjamesred
i want Prince Fielder in a SF Giants uniform!!!!! it would take a bunch of prospects though!
rainyperez
I would say the Giants give Brett Pill (we have Belt in the minors who has jumped to top prospect in a hurry), John Bowker (he would thrive at miller park), Zack Wheeler, Clayton Tanner, and if absolutely necessary Sanchez. But I think that would be enough to ply Fielder without giving up Neal and Belt…
Zel567
Brewers don’t want Sanchez for Fielder. They want young pitching that will be around for awhile…ie Bumgarner
The_Thrill_22
Bumgarner isn’t going to be traded. He has more value than Fielder right not. Young left handed pitcher that is still under team control for 6 years, has been a stud on every level, and is dealing at the major league level.
Linececum, Cain and Bumgarner are going to cost more than most teams can afford or would want to trade.
Bay_Area_Hero
Personally, I would take the pass on Hart. His numbers aren’t consistent enough for me and I agree with 55, he would be another Rowand. Same goes for Werth-less. I personally would like a left handed power hitter like Dunn or Feilder. They both have more than enough power to drop bombs in the pond and would compliment what we already have quite nicely.
CF-Toress
2B-Sanchez
C-Posey
LF-Huff
1B-Feilder or Dunn
3B-Sandovol
SS-Uribe
RF-Sheirholtz
P-……….
That leaves on the bench
Ishi
Burell
Whiteside
Rowand
Renteria
Ryan Riddell
I’ve never heard of this Feilder character… Is he from the German League?
ilovetacos
this is what I’m hoping for…prefer Dunn over Fielder, as he should cost a lot less in prospects
jredjamesred
no Hart or DeJesus! please Sabean don’t go there!
Ryan
Seriously Sanchez and Bumgarner for Hart? The Brewers are straight up on crack
jredjamesred
Werth-less haha that’s a good one!
rainyperez
Giants offense are on a roll right now and they are in the tops of runs scored this month. Adding a piece like Fielder or a speed/avg guy like DeJesus only solidifies the lineup. While DeJesus adds to the top of the order Fielder will add the knock out punch that the Giants don’t necessarily need but if they do acquire him they have a very potent offense for the post season if they get there. My ideal lineup doesn’t have speed, but does have pop with average.
1.Torres
2.Sanchez
3.Posey
4.Fielder
5.Huff
6.Sandoval
7.Uribe/Renteria
8.Schierholtz
You can sub Burrell or Ishikawa when necessary, but I hope the Giants do something big adding a reliever and a hitter. Preferably Scott Downs of Toronto if Runzler doesn’t come back strong, he’s a lefty that will definitely help out our ‘pen.
nbgiant25
i personally think that dejesus fits the bill in terms of affordability and fit more so than the other guys being talked about… the giants need a guy who can hit to the gaps and have good ABs. forget the power guys and focus on professional hitters.
The_Thrill_22
You get enough good hitters in the line up you can score a lot of runs, but every contender needs a legit bat in the middle of the order.
Your reasoning would work out if our guys had a higher OBP and could run, but they are station to station guys (except for Torres) and just flail at everything.
Ryan Riddell
Fielder is not worth the prospects. In order to keep him past 2011 it will take an epic amount of money that the giants won’t have once the pitcher’s contracts start getting even MORE expensive.
And guys, no mock lineups in a Giants thread. We’re not NYM fans, come on.
I THINK WE SHOULD GET OSWALT FOR LUIS CASTILLO SO OUR ROTATION WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE THE ASTROS WILL TOTALLY UNDERSTAND!
BleacherBumSF
eve if Fielder can’t be brought back after 2011 they could get two high draft picks for him since he would probably be a type A free agent
BleacherBumSF
I really wish we could get one of Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder, Mark Reynolds, or Dan Uggla
Ryan Riddell
Man, I could justify putting Reynolds at 1B, but where would you put Uggla? It’s been established that he doesn’t want to switch to 3B/OF
BleacherBumSF
move Freddy Sanchez to 3B, he’s played there before when he was on the Pirates and he played it pretty well from what I heard
Ryan Riddell
I like your positivity about Sanchez but he hasn’t played 3B since 2006. Granted he played it well, but his defense at 2B is way more valuable than Uggla’s. I dunno, I just don’t want Sandoval going to 1B because his D is worse at 1B than it is at 3B.
BleacherBumSF
I’d do it. Sandoval is better at 3B but he’s not going to cost us games if we move him to 1B. Uggla is a HUGE upgrade over having Renteria or Ishikawa in the lineup.
The_Thrill_22
Dunn would be ideal, but Sabean keeps stating he doesn’t want rental players, and the Nationals are shopping Dunn like he is Ryan Howard. They want a lot for a guy that will be a free-agent after this year.
Yankees420
There is a reason the Nationals are shopping Dunn like he’s Howard.
Howard: .282/.373/.581 in 3500+ PA
Dunn: .251/.382/.523 in 5800 PA
Howard gives you a better average and slugging, but both K a ton and Dunn has the better OBP, they’re really very comparable.
The_Thrill_22
True but you can’t expect full market value for the guy when he is only under contract for one more season
Yankees420
I’m not saying that Dunn is worth 2 blue chip prospects, just that there is reason Rizzo is shopping Dunn as if he can produce like Howard.
HitsOneHigh.com
Which is exactly why we don’t stand a chance at Dunn.. Time to start settling for Theriot because Sabean won’t buck up for anyone else..
Yankees420

JM White IV
The Nationals are not shopping Dunn at all. thats the thing that a lot of folks aren’t getting.
pretty much ALL the movement in Dunn trade rumors is coming from other teams interested in him.
Rizzo simply doesn’t want to trade him, and it’d take a ridiculous offer to change his mind.
Rizzo isn’t going to teams and initiating talks by asking for the moon. He is telling people “I don’t want to trade him, and it’ll take a miracle to convince me to do so.”
billski8
Kung Fu Panda + Kung Fu Fielder = UNSTOPPABLE
jphenix2002
Its only Kung Fu Fielder if Mota is on the mound
jphenix2002
Its too bad San Fran got rid of molina. It would be somethin to have him, Prince, and the Panda in the same lineup. Slowest ever?
benny
casey mcgehee is slow as hell too
renegade
Yes I’m sure emmanuel burress or ehire adrianza will get Bautista when AA is asking for elite prospects. Heyman you are as clueless as they come.
Gigantes
just cause your asking for elite players doesn’t mean you’ll get them. Bautista’s ceiling is a Carlos Pena type player good power low average. You don’t get elite prospects for decent bats. I think something like Ehire Adrianza + Brett Pill would be a pretty good haul for bautista. And if im the giants i still pass…….
meanguygary
Heyman needs to find another line of work. He’s really not very good at this.
Yankees420
What makes you think he’d be good at anything else?
Wilsonl
Whats the point of getting Jose Bautista? I know Giants need a power hitter, but he won’t last after this season..
Encarnacion's Parrot
Proof? People said that Bautista couldn’t keep up the home runs back in May, but he’s still going! It’s possible that he’s never hit like this before because he’s always been a non-regular since 2007, and on a shitty Pirates team. The fact of the matter is in his last 591 plate appearances, dating back to last September, he’s hit 36 home runs and driven in 85RBI, and that’s only 5 months, not a complete season!
Just to add on an edit, his BABIP is .229, well below league average and below his .273 career average,
Wilsonl
And i care why?
Encarnacion's Parrot
If I actually have to explain it to you further, then perhaps you should watch another sport.
Wilsonl
I didn’t ask you to explain it further, and no thanks.
Encarnacion's Parrot
Well then, don’t claim something that holds no merrit unless you can let me look into your crystal ball. Thanks!
Wilsonl
Well did anyone ask you to reply? Don’t think so.
TheodoreRoosevelt
You do realise that the comment section is a discussion, right?
Wilsonl
Yeah.
Wilsonl
“improve an offensive attack that ranks ninth in the NL”, Hard to believe.
GiantsWSchamps2010
There is no way they could give up Bumgarner for Hart, I would take Sanchez for Hart though.
The Jesus
Brandon Belt for Bautista please. Thanks.
theironcow
no…
BleacherBumSF
LOL I’m pretty sure you’re joking. you are joking right?
GiantsWSchamps2010
I hope he is kidding…
shockey12
Bautista for wheeler?
ilovetacos
no….wait thats not strong enough HELL NO
Jon Stark
Bautista’s sweet.
coolstorybro222
I would like to get David Dejesus for the braves because he can play center, right and left, and he has good speed, I wouldn’t mind if the Giants got Hart.
blackandorangepride
Fielder is the guy thats needed him or Dunn although if Dunn enjoys it enough here he may re-sign with SF
Brewcrew00
To get Prince SF would have to include Baumgarner, Zach Wheeler and a possible minor league 1st baseman we don’t want Sanchez. Brewers could expand it with throwing in a pitcher.
rainyperez
Sorry I just laughed…Bumgarner AND Zack Wheeler you are dreaming big time…we have those guys under control way past Fielder’s FA years so that’s not happening. Just so you know Bumgarner is already deemed untouchable so the best you can get is Zack Wheelr and/or Sanchez along with top flight relievers and a B prospect. Here’s my trade Brett Pill, John Bowker, Zack Wheeler, Clayton Tanner if necessary Sanchez…
Brewcrew00
Hitters like Prince don’t come along very often and Bumgarner isn’t Cain or Lincecum. Brewers are looking for front line starters not relievers and SF needs a power hitter. And you have him for 2 pennant runs and if you can’t sign him you would get 2 supplemental picks.
Gigantes
Brewer fans should know better then anyone what Bumgarner is capable of he may not K 200+ a year but could easily develop to a very solid #2 with his control and composure. I think i would trade Cain before i would trade BUmgarner at this point with age and team control taken into account.
Gigantes
Sanchez and Wheeler is too much. They a want a top 50 hard throwing pitching prospect along with a top 100 prospect right. Then how about Zach Wheeler (#48) Thomas Neal (#96) Brett Pill and Brandon Crawford. Still a lot to give up but i think it’s pretty good for both sides.
55saveslives
One year of Prince will NOT get two first round draft picks…one who is already in the show..
Madison is almost exactly a left handed Matt Cain. He will be a horse.
Sean Morse
Looks like the Human Twinkie will remain a Brewer under those circumstances…
Will32
The only player I’m interested in is DeJesus. He’s fast, a plus defender, always seems to put up good numbers every year, in a terrible, terrible lineup. Also he’s a left handed bat which we need
Ryan
If the giants trade some pitching or prospects for a bat, then it would have to be a big one like Dunn, Fielder, or Bautista. Otherwise it is not worth it.
bannister19
Someone noted in the MLBTR Chat that Neither DDJ or Pods is in the lineup today, calling way for a possible trade in the works.
I’d like to add that neither is Alex Gordon in AAA.
(Gordon is the first to get called up if DDJ or Pods gets traded. Kila being 2nd, or 1st if Gullien gets traded)
$3081341
Lets see the N.L. get some bats as opposed to the star studded A.L. East. Rangers can’t add anybody due to financial constraints. Both S.D. & ATL should end up with big bats. One will get Hart, the other is left with DeJesus. Not bad.
T
I only want an immediate impact player Bautista, Dunn, Fielder. Its either a big player or bust. I’m tired of just good players I want elite. If not wait until offseason/next season until the market is bigger.
Sean Morse
Howard, Dunn, Fielder, whatever it takes!!! Kills me that the Giants are always trying to get it done on the Cheap, and seems Sabe’s Goal is to build a team to win the NL West. Ok I get it, but it’s going to take a hell of a lot more talent to Win It All. Well Eventually these Pitchers (Cain, Lincecum, and Bumgarner) are going to cost some big bucks and in order to retain these guys you can forget about any bats to go along with them. The Time is now!!! Maybe the thinking should be 2 big bats, Seems like at the Deadline some team always pulls off a scam leaving us fans feeling “Hey we could’ve giving you 3 Dumpsters and a bucket of balls for that guy”…
