The Blue Jays claimed Casey Fien off waivers from the Red Sox, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian (via Twitter). To make room for Fien, the Jays moved Scott Richmond to the 60-day DL.
It's been a busy week for Fien, who is with his third organization since Monday. The Tigers designated the reliever for assignment last week and the Red Sox claimed him Monday. He posted 10.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 58 Triple A innings last year and made his MLB debut. He has only faced 53 major league hitters, so it wouldn't be fair to judge him on the 7.94 ERA he posted for the Tigers.
The Red Sox now have 39 players on their 40-man roster, according to a team press release.

More arms for the Jays!!!!! Wooooo (?)
wishy2
I hope he will be reimbursed mileage for his travels the past few days… Lakeland to Ft. Meyers to Dunedin… Whats next??
loeres
how is this possible? he was claimed off waivers by the sox on may first and now he got claimed again?

Yeah I’m confused as well loeres….clearly I don’t know how this whole waivers deal works. So a guy can be claimed more than once? Could Boston have prevented the Jays from claiming him, or did they know that risk when they first claimed him from Detroit? It’s all confusing.

in addition to that: could they have kept gaby hernandez or would he have been claimable too? this might be a theo blowup, i thought the whole fien claim + hernandez release action was a bit risky, because they obviously liked hernandez in pawtucket and hoped nobody would claim him

Gaby had to be placed on waivers to allow Fien to be acquired. Fien shows up, and then for some reason decided to immediately place him, too, on waivers today. This is two different waiver claims coming from two different instances of Fien being designated for assignment. Maybe he got into some sort of incident, or maybe they’ve got another 40-man move coming. Who knows?

Fien is still listed on the Red Sox 40 man roster, so I don’t understand how he could be claimed by the Blue Jays, unless the Red Sox moved him off of the 40 man. It is a shame (as a Sox fan), Fien seemed like a guy who could make an impact in the pen in a 6th inning role. By my understanding, the Blue Jays would have had “dibs” on Fien if both the Sox and the Jays had claimed him, by virtue of their worse record last year.

Him and Gaby Hernanadez have had interesting offseasons

i feel bad for the guy. he’s a good young arm, im surprised he’s been bouncing around this week. as a tigers fan i think he had some potential, seemed to have pretty good stuff. i wish him well in toronto

Wow, I really wish the Jays had claimed Hernandez over Fien, he has much better upside, though, can’t complain about the Jays grabbing another good arm.
