June 24: The Diamondbacks officially placed Carroll on the IL, retroactive to June 21st, and recalled McCarthy today.
June 23: Corbin Carroll has been diagnosed with a “chip fracture” in his left wrist, manager Torey Lovullo told D-Backs’ postgame host Todd Walsh (h/t to Jody Jackson). It’s unclear how long he’ll be out of action or whether there’s any consideration of surgery. Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic had reported shortly before Lovullo’s announcement that the D-Backs would place Carroll on the injured list tomorrow. According to Piecoro, Jake McCarthy will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to take his spot on the roster.
It’s the latest hit to an Arizona team that has been battered by injuries. In this month alone, they’ve lost Corbin Burnes and top relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez to season-ending elbow surgeries. Starting catcher Gabriel Moreno went down with a broken index finger last week. They’ll now be without one of their top two hitters for what seems likely to be at least a few weeks.
Carroll was injured during last Wednesday’s loss to the Blue Jays. Toronto reliever Justin Bruihl hit him on the left wrist with a 91 MPH sinker. The D-Backs lifted him for a defensive replacement in the following half-inning. Carroll hasn’t played since and wasn’t recovering as well as hoped. The Snakes sent him for an MRI that revealed the bone break. It’s unfortunately similar to the situation that played out with Moreno, who initially continued to play after a first round of x-rays didn’t catch the hairline fracture in his finger.
The 24-year-old Carroll has had a fantastic season, hitting .255/.341/.573 with 20 homers in 72 games. He got out to a blistering start, cooled a bit in May, and had rebounded to reel off nine extra-base hits in 13 games this month. Carroll has been a fixture in the top two spots in Lovullo’s batting order all season. They’ve bumped Geraldo Perdomo to the leadoff spot, at least against right-handed pitching, in his absence. Randal Grichuk has drawn into the lineup as the right fielder.
Grichuk is a solid role player but obviously isn’t going to come close to replacing Carroll’s production. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the Diamondbacks still have a strong nucleus. A lineup including Ketel Marte, Eugenio Suárez, Josh Naylor, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Perdomo should remain capable of scoring runs. They need an elite offense to compensate for the struggles of the injury-riddled pitching staff, though, and that’s much more difficult without Carroll at the top.
Arizona bludgeoned the White Sox for a 10-0 victory tonight. That brought them to 40-38 on the season. They’re in fourth place in the NL West but are just 2.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot. Few teams have more at stake over the next five weeks as they hope to remain in position to add at the deadline.
Devastating news. Carroll finally having a true breakout season…
D-Backs probably already were going to be sellers, now it’s a near certainty Suarez is being dealt.
Carroll had his breakout season in 2023.
Breakout power like never before
That sucks like watching him play hope he isn’t out long.
Both Suarez and Naylor left tonight’s game with injuries. Both are Free agents at the end of the season. If they both end up on the IL, it will be hard for the Snakes to get much back if they can trade them at all.
Tough call for the Snakes. They’re 2 1/2 back in the WC race and 2 games over .500. If they become sellers then Gallen and Kelly should be available too. They’re free agents after the season too.
As long as they are healthy and playing decent by the end of July they can trade them if they want to. Arizona has injury problems but nothing suggests Naylor and Suarez won’t be healthy in July.
terrible news.
Word from Chicago is that Arizona and the Cubs have had serious discussions with Arizona sending a pitcher rumored to be Gallen to Chicago
The way Gallen is pitching this year, this may actually improve the team….
Haha, that’s funny I’m in Chicago and outside of speculation that Kelly or Gallen could be options if AZ actually decides to sell (reporting says they’ve been adamant they aren’t sellers). Unless this news came from Kaplan not sure where you hearing this.
He read it in the comments section somewhere so it’s officially a rumor.
That really sucks. When it rains it pours. Hopefully the Snakes can stay hovering around .500 until Carroll gets back and then maybe add a little bit. I’m trying to be optimistic here.
Source?
Bruce Levine I believe is one source
alaskajsw: You mean, cubs fan Bruce Levine?
At least it isn’t Mark Levine. Then it would just be a lot of yelling.
Underrated comment
At this point it’s almost comical
Bad season to be named Corbin in Arizona…
But not so much Corbin in Arlington, funnily.
I get more TRADE RUMORS in my Google news feed and these comments than on this site.
Maybe a name change.
Maybe just go away and take your sad act to Reddit.
If your that hurt, maybe Kleenex.com for you.
Boston’s Allgnment must have skipped Charm School this morning. Either that or he’s still mad because the Red Sox traded Devers.
I hope I find someone who loves me as much as whoever told you that you are funny.
you’re
And this is why you aren’t on the roster.
Terrible, Such a disruptive hitter and just 24 years old. Trajecting on a Mookie Betts comp.
Nah, Mookie could hit for average.
Sure, there are differences. But similar OPS+ and WAR at age 24. Carroll has more speed and equal power to Mookie so far in his career. Mookie’s 2018 BA at Boston was ridiculous (his 5th full season).
Carroll plays great defensive RF like Mookie did when you look at OAA and other metrics, I have to believe his BA will climb as he moves into his mid- and late-20s.
They both are just 5′ 10″ and well under 200 lbs yet have great power. But only time will tell us how Carroll’s career will advance.
“Carroll hasn’t played since and wasn’t recovering as well as hoped.“
He pinch hit Saturday, right?
My mistake.
We’re 6 days from July and 4 to 6 weeks recovery for broken bones is not usual plus rehab. Carroll may not be back until August or later. As to Naylor and Suarez it’s too early to tell yet. Knowing the Snakes current luck Suarez has a broken bone, too. If I was the team I’d get an MRI on that hand. They waited three days on Carroll. Hiss x rays came back negative, like Moreno’s.
The baseball gods just don’t want them in the playoffs this year.
I hope they change their minds.
I thought this team was going to be really good this year. And they probably would have been if they hadn’t gotten decimated by injuries. They’re gonna have to decide sooner rather than later whether they’re going to be sellers or not. It’s looking more by the day that they will be.
AZ is going to have a very hard time keeping pace with 3 teams ahead of them in their division let alone wildcard race by the time Carroll comes back
AZ maybe be a team that is not going to have a fire sale, they will be right in the middle, they just won’t make a deal to make a deal because a certain player is a FA. No give aways to these other teams. Sorry. If a team wants to overpay to get a Gallen, Kelly, or a Suarez, Naylor. Just don’t see the D’Backs giving these players away. That is why if they are within 5 games of the Wild Card by July 31st, they may surprise and be a buyer and use Gallen or maybe Suarez as trade bait for something they really need or want someone that is club protected to help this D’Back team make a playoff run. This is going to be an interesting time to watch the standings.
God this sucks. He will probably never be the player he was. He had developed this new swing where he really put his everything in every swing. How can he do that knowing it caused this when he comes back, you know?
Why would change anything having his best season yet? The injury was caused by a HBP.
Dbacks are the hottest team in baseball in the month of June with a 14-7 record. So far, the sky hasn’t fallen!
They will be buyers at the Trade Deadline. They may also be one of those teams that function at the Trade Deadline as both buyers and sellers. I doubt they will trade anyone from the major league team, but perhaps 1 player on an expiring contract (perhaps Naylor) will be moved. More likely, they will trade from their depth, particularly minor leaguers.
