Tigers assistant general manager Sam Menzin resigned his position on Thursday, according to The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen. Menzin had been working in this role since August 2021, and he briefly served as the club’s acting front office boss during the roughly six-week period between the firing of former GM Al Avila and Scott Harris’ hiring as the new president of baseball operations.
Though Menzin is only in his mid-30s, he had been one of the Tigers’ longest-tenured front office employees, as he started as a front office intern back in 2012. He worked his way up the ladder in a variety of different roles, with a focus on the player development department. Chris McCosky of the Detroit News notes that one of Menzin’s recent responsibilities included overseeing some upgrades to the Tigers’ Spring Training facility.
The timing of the resignation (just a week into the season) is a little unusual, and no reason was given for Menzin’s departure. Speculatively speaking, it could be that Menzin simply felt it was time for a fresh start, if there was perhaps little room for immediate future advancement within Detroit’s front office. Harris doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, and Jeff Greenberg was hired after the 2023 season in the GM role as Harris’ chief lieutenant in baseball ops. Menzin was one of four assistant GMs in the front office, along with Ryan Garko, Rob Metzler, and Jay Sartori.
His refusal to teach the Roger Beshens football slider resulted in his removal from the front office. It says he resigned, but I imagine this was a forced resignation
I can’t even tell if these comments are satire anymore.
I think it needs to be funny for a comment to be satirical.
Is there a satire faunt?
Greenberg won the nose-measuring contest, so Sam had to go.
And you won the low-class human contest
How many mid players like Ryan Garko are in front offices these days
One…. There is and always will be only one Ryan Garko
What does his level of play have to do with the fact he’s in the front office? Because he wasn’t a HOF player means he isn’t smart enough to work in the front offices? What about the former players who weren’t great hitters being hitting coaches? Or players who weren’t highly successful being managers? But, I’m sure your MLB career was much more successful.
He went to Stanford, for what it’s worth. I’m sure he’s a smart guy
Jerry Dipoto the king of mediocrity….
4 Asst .GM’s? No wonder he left When the music stopped he was the one without a chair.
He was 1 of the 4 asst GM’s at the time of his resignation so he did, in fact, have a chair.
But I think what Mike is referring to is maybe now they’ll just go with 3 and he wasn’t one of the 3.
I was just wondering why they had more than 1. Must encompass a lot of territory.
It has become fairly common for teams to have multiple AGMs. Even the kids today know that
Title inflation. When Theo Epstein went to the Cubs he had to sound more important, so enter the President I’d Baseball Operations, or PoBO. That opened the door for the lone AGM to have a GM title without really being a GM since the PoBO is the GM. That in turn made a bunch of managers into AGMs. Nothing’s changed but the fancier sounding titles.
Jed was GM with the Padres when he bailed to join Theo to run the Cubs. I think the Padres had to be compensated with a token player, because like Theo, he was still under contract. Imagine Ricketts opening the wallet to poach Theo and Jed.
Also, Andy McPhail and Dallas Green had been President of the Cubs earlier. So, it wasn’t a brand new title. I think McPhail bridged Ed Lynch and Jim Henry as interim GM.
Too many chiefs.
Many teams have more than one asst GM, and this isn’t even new.. its been the case for over a decade.
Too many assisstant chiefs.
It’s unlikely he completely voluntarily resign without another job lined up. Either he has another job but doesn’t want to announce it yet or he is leaving with a severance payment, though his severance could be amicable since he might have been looking already.
He’ll be fine. I’m sure he has something in the works. Good luck to him.
Someone tell Superfife they have an opening.
Please don’t encourage him. He’s annoying enough on his own without being emboldened.
What does Superfife mean?
He’s a frequent Tigers poster ISB.
What does ISB mean?
It’s where Colonel Yularen works.
In 1920 my father was living in Japan. I’ve seen a picture of him as a lad wearing a baseball glove and dressed in knickers. Ah, good times.
The word on the street is Menzin was the one who told Harris Alex Cobb was worth every penny. Menzin also told Illich the Tigers have Jung to play 3B. They don’t need Bregman.
The Cobb and Torres money could have been better spent by the Tigers. Cobb received the same amount as Justin Verlander. The signing at that amount did not make sense even before he got injured. But I hope I am wrong and Cobb helps this team.
You have no idea what Cobb will bring to this team yet, and the Torres signing will be very beneficial when he gets healthy. And for your info, Verlander was TORCHED all Spring long and sucked in his 1st start for SF. Do some research before you want to quickly hate on Scott Harris. This team is 2 years above schedule from where they thought they’d be, so give it a rest.
And Javy Baez is an excellent shortstop worth every penny. LOL, you Scottie Harris lovers are funny.
Verlander was “torched”? 5 starts 2 and 0 record with a 3.43 era. Dang… what did Alex Cobb do?
The reporting at the time of the signing said Harris knew Cobb in SF. With Menzin in DTW since 2012, whose word on the street says Menzin told Harris about Cobb?
Harris “knew” Cobb… in that they worked at the same building. They didn’t kick back and bar hop together. Menzin had Cobb’s baseball card and said, “Jeepers, he was pretty good that year.” Harris said, “Hey, I know him… we used to go to the same building together. I should give him a call. See if he remembers me.”
That’s what I heard on the street. Huggy Bear
The TREND of hundreds of Major League Pitchers using the Roger Beshens Football slider has taken off. Handle the situation.
Doesn’t matter if Roger created the pitch or not or if anyone else ever threw it.
Wait until you guys hear why.
When do you think we’ll know?
It would be great if he has a new job opportunity but I don’t have a good feeling about this
Started working w the Tigers when he was five. Got tired of being told to pick up his toys. Living in the garage had its perks but finally decided to hit the road with his 80s band. Which for now is just him and his cat and his keytar
He’s got all the information on the Tigers and now one of the other ALC teams will sign him to have insight into the Tigers system. Maybe the ChiSox? 😀
Can someone just say what he did
