The Red Sox released veteran lefty Matt Moore from his minor league contract, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Moore had been assigned to Triple-A Worcester but has been on the minor league injured list since Opening Day. Christopher Smith of MassLive wrote in late March that the former All-Star was dealing with arm soreness.
Moore was healthy enough to make four appearances during Spring Training. He allowed only one unearned run over four innings in camp, though he struck out two of 16 batters faced. Moore bypassed an opportunity to opt out of his contract at the end of camp and agreed to report to Worcester. The injury prevented him from taking the mound with the WooSox.
The 35-year-old Moore held a spot in the Angels’ bullpen for the entire 2024 season. He struggled to a 5.03 ERA through 48 1/3 innings. Moore’s 19.5% strikeout rate was down eight percentage points relative to the previous year. He walked 12.4% of batters faced while giving up more than two home runs per nine innings. Moore’s fastball velocity — which had sat in the 94 MPH range between 2022-23 — was down a tick to 93 MPH last year. A forearm strain cost him the final month of the season.
Moore managed much better numbers during the 2022-23 stretch. He fanned over 27% of opposing hitters in both seasons while combining for a 2.20 ERA in 126 2/3 innings. It’s not clear when he’s expected to return to the mound, but he should be able to find another minor league deal once he’s healthy.
What!?
It’s chompers to you
Texas
Seemed likable when he was with the Halos
Cashman on line one.
Can I just say I hate this guy’s results. He was on sfg and I can’t stand him because we gave up Matt Duffy.
Shhhhh.
Please don’t mention him when SFG only has one lefty in the pen. Certainly they won’t make the same mistake twice, but..
Shhhhh.
The only good thing Matt Moore gave the Giants was Game 4 of the 2016 NLDS. A nice performance blown by the bullpen in heartbreaking fashion.
I still miss Duffman!
Don’t need him any Moore I suppose
Not surprised … hasn’t had a hit movie since Bowling for Columbine ….
Twins? Could certainly use bullpen depth an only have 2 lefties on the 40 man.
No moore. No moore. Nooooo, no moore.
Here comes Ben Cherington to get Moore a chance in the Pirates bullpen. The bullpen really can get all the help it can get, but I think Moore is a finished product and his best years are behind him. But this move fits BC type or low budget bandaid move.
Cherington does love his well-traveled journeymen he can potentially flip at the deadline for a lottery ticket.
Good. The Red Sox bullpen is propping up the Team and would likely needed healthy, high-strikeout depth, not another rehab project.
Moore’s been around forever. He’s had some decent seasons and has managed to pile up $53 million in career earnings. Maybe he’ll just shut it down one of these years. But as long as some team is interested…

It’s impressive how Moore has hung around at 35. Dude looked cooked in his late 20’s.
He’s sinister.
I have a problem with the Sox signing all of these “rehabby”, “depth”, “lightning in a bottle” type veterans like Moore, Stock, Fullmer and even Sandoval. The percentages say that these moves are not going to work.
The game is skewing younger. Doesn’t anyone else think that signing a younger, healthy pitcher who’s skills could be tinkered with for a month or so is a better play? I’m sure there are as many (if not more) 25yo’s out there that haven’t had surgery or been out of baseball for a year to be had than these retreads.
Of course. They are out there but Sox management, a group of twelve year old fantasy experts, are too dumb to realize it. Sandoval could yet pan out; same with Hendricks. If not, the money “wasted” had no bearing on their inability to find the golden tickets. If you were a Yankees fan, you’d decry Cashman’s incompetence for letting the brilliant Bloom fleece him on Garret Whitlock.
Mets need to DFA Danny Young instantly and bring in Moore
