After an offseason that saw the Red Sox get aggressive in improving the big league club by adding Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Alex Bregman, the club showed a different kind of aggressiveness when they included top infield prospect Kristian Campbell on their Opening Day roster. That move has certainly paid off for them so far; not only has Campbell signed on with the club long-term, but he’s hitting an excellent .318/.426/.545 across his first 13 games in the major leagues while serving as the club’s regular second baseman and occasionally making appearances in the outfield.
Campbell wasn’t the only top prospect the Red Sox had knocking on the door to the majors this spring, however. Outfielder Roman Anthony and infielder Marcelo Mayer are rated just as highly as Campbell, with all three being consensus top-15 prospects across the entire sport. While a vacancy at second base and Campbell’s impressive work flying through the minor leagues last year were enough to get him called up to the majors first among the trio, it should surprise no one if all three are in the majors in relatively short order. With that being said, it remains unclear which of Anthony and Mayer are most likely to make it to the majors next.
Anthony, 21 next month, has a strong case to come up and contribute soon. As a consensus top-two prospect in the sport who has been ranked number one overall by multiple major publications, Anthony’s ceiling is immense. Last year, he slashed .291/.396/.498 between the Double- and Triple-A levels, including a phenomenal .344/.463/.519 slash line when looking just at his 35 games (164 plate appearances) at the highest level of the minor leagues. That hot finish at Triple-A created plenty of buzz about the possibility of Anthony breaking camp with the Red Sox over the offseason, but Anthony’s .206/.391/.324 slash line in Spring Training this year wasn’t enough to convince Boston brass that their top prospect was ready for the next step.
His early season performance at Triple-A hasn’t exactly demanded consideration for a promotion, either. Through ten games, Anthony is hitting .177/.364/.412 in his return to the club’s Worcester affiliate. While that’s a sample of just 44 plate appearances, Anthony’s 31.8% strikeout rate so far this year at the very least suggests he’s running a bit cold right now, though that he’s been able to walk at a 22.7% clip and bash a pair of homers while doing so is certainly impressive. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo recently suggested that the Red Sox are currently hoping to see more production from Anthony against left-handed pitchers before he makes it to the big leagues. That’s on top of a need for Anthony to work on his defense, which will be challenged as he appears likely to move from center field to left upon being called up to the majors.
That to-do list and Anthony’s middling play early in the season could open the door for Mayer to beat him to the majors. The 22-year-old provided a strong challenge to Campbell for the second base job during Spring Training as he hit .333/.455/.528 during camp, though Mayer’s lack of experience above the Double-A level always made him a less likely option to get the job. Mayer’s first taste of Triple-A has seen him cool off significant relative to his spring performance, as he’s hit just .243/.282/.405 with a 28.2% strikeout rate through nine games at the level. He’ll surely need to start hitting better than that with Worcester before he gets called up to the majors, although the club hasn’t laid out any more specific issues that Mayer needs to address before he can be called up like they have with Anthony.
The fact that the club has specific areas they’d like to see Anthony grow before he reaches the majors, in conjunction with Mayer finishing as arguably the runner up behind Campbell for the club’s starting second base job, would seem to suggest that Mayer is closer to being promoted than Anthony is. However, Anthony has one major leg up in this conversation relative to Mayer: the construction of Boston’s lineup. With Campbell serving as the club’s regular second baseman, there is no longer an obvious spot on the infield which Mayer can take up. Campbell, Triston Casas, Alex Bregman, and Trevor Story are all slated for regular at-bats this year, and even the DH role is filled by Rafael Devers on a daily basis.
Either an injury somewhere on the infield, a move to the outfield for Campbell, or a shocking move to bench Story would likely be necessary for Mayer to muscle his way into the lineup at this point. The same cannot be said of Anthony, who has a fairly straightforward path to playing time in the club’s outfield mix. Ceddanne Rafaela has served as the club’s usual center fielder entering the 2025 campaign, but he’s hit just .243/.275/.378 in the majors to this point in his career, including a paltry .205/.279/.205 line so far this year. While he’s a brilliant defender in center field, that’s not the type of production that should keep a team from promoting the sport’s top prospect to the majors once he’s ready. Rafaela, who has the ability to play both the infield and the outfield, could move to a utility role on the bench similar to the one Enrique Hernandez once filled once Anthony is ready to go. Anthony could either plug in directly for Rafaela in center field, or he could be tasked with manning left field while Jarren Duran slides over to center.
How do MLBTR readers think things will play out? Will Anthony make it to the majors first, off the back of his status as the sport’s #1 prospect and a potential opening in the outfield? Or will the club’s desire to see Anthony hit more against southpaws in the minors and Mayer’s strong work in Spring Training be enough to get him to the majors first? Have your say in the poll below:
Mayer needs Story to have a MONSTER year so that MAYBE Boston could move him.
Story needs to stay healthy to even begin to dream about having a monster year. I’m not wishing injury on the guy but he’s been giving Rendon a run for his money for being injured.
My vote is we Roman come up first.
Na he is not as bad as Rendon. Story still WANTS to play and tries to play. Rendon is happy just to sit out and collect his money.
Story looks good so far but he’s an accident waiting to happen. Thus, I think Mayer at any moment could be summoned.
On another front, Sox are getting killed and it’s weird trying to watch the game on a Firestick. The audio is a tick ahead of the video so I’m hearing the crack of the bat before the swing is complete. I’ve experienced it the other way and other apps are synced fine.
Agree about Story, and our supposed GG calibre defence is killing us. Plus something like 4-44 RISP and about 30 LOB vs Toronto. Things gotta get better fast, I expect to sweep Chicago
dewey – Just curious, why do you say that about Story? He’s a great athlete, in phenomenal shape, he’s not clumsy or makes dumb decisions, and he doesn’t play reckless.
As for tonight’s game ….. it’s shocking, to say the least.
Why?
1) The Red Sox were facing a SP with an ERA near 6.
2) The ChiSox had lost 8 straight and were 2-10 overall.
3) The ChiSox had scored only 16 runs in their prior 8 games
4) The ChiSox were missing their best player, 10D
Despite the brutal loss, when Cora was asked in the postgame if he would call a team meeting all he did was laugh and say no chance. What an idiot he is.
On a positive note, Chase was awesome!!! I can see why so many members of Red Sox Nation loved the guy when he was in the Red Sox minor league system. I’m very happy for him and his family.
albert – If not for the grace of God in yesterday’s game, the Red Sox would be on a 5-game losing streak right now.
Other than the Bello and Crawford injuries, they’ve got no excuses. It’s the same old Cora team, no defensive fundamentals and their hitting philosophy results in huge strikeout numbers with awful RISP numbers.
Casas should DH fulltime, he should burn his glove! He made two awful miscues tonight, something no first baseman should ever do in one game.
And hit left handed home runs.
Fever, his athleticism has led to his injuries. He hasn’t been able to stay on the field in a Boston uniform. That’s all I meant
What tends to bother me is the Medroith has a track record for BB and it’s like the pitching totally ignored it, and continually threw pitches off the plate, same as the Chisox pitcher which we crooks swings at constantly for K’s… makes us look like idiots!
I agree, I see no improvement coming from Casa’s. The kid has a weight problem, and it’s seems to make him even slower. It might be time to send him down for a wake up call! I know I’m frustrated with his poor production and Rafella is starting to fall into the same issues. They are there, but their heads are not into the game!
Agreed, Devers should be at first and Casas at DH or traded
BadCo:
Agree completely. Last year when I pointed out the same things about Casas, I was told I was “fat shaming”.
Casas is heading for complete bust territory. Conditioning is not his strong suit and will be his downfall.
dewey – That’s fair.
So what do you make of all the catcher interference? Is it an organizational thing where they are instructing the catchers to set up closer to the batters? All three Red Sox catchers have done it at least once, so something is up.
I was told I was “fat shaming”.
=======================
That’s pure silliness. “Fat-shaming” is for regular people, not athletes. If my job requires a suit-and-tie and grooming, that’s how I have to show up.
If necessary, Casas needs to spend the off-season in AZ training every single day. I’m not saying I could do it, but if I had a possible $100M career in front of me, you need to come in like a beast.
Mayer can be put at SS and even handle it. But 3b might be better. If Bregman opts out. If Story is healthy and does well.
All comes down to bat. If you hit they find you a spot.
I think 3B is the direction they go for Mayer, plus he doesn’t look ready yet anyway. Anthony continues to tear it up.
Acoss – I would bet heavy money on Anthony for one big reason: Rafaela needs to be replaced in the OF.
You should have seen the game tonight, it was just about as bad a game as an OF could ever have.
I’m not just talking about Rafaela going 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts, lowering his BA to .190 and his OPS to .467
There was a play in CF where he was too damn lazy to run to the wall and catch a very catch-able fly ball, and then as the ball bounced off the wall he was too damn lazy to use his glove to catch it. He tried to barehand it, and therefore dropped it which allowed the hitter to get all the way to third base.
After that play most managers would have immediately pulled him from the game. I think Breslow realizes the only way to get Cora to stop starting Rafaela nearly every game is to have him demoted.
Red Sox Nation believes when Rafaela gets demoted, Anthony will be the one to get called up.
Storys opt out would seriously limit trade value
Pool – At first I thought you were being sarcastic since he would become a free agent after the season, but now I’m wondering if you are suggesting he be traded midseason? If so, I agree ….. no team would give up much for a player who can opt out after the season.
Regardless, Story is not the problem so far this season …. he’s been perfect on defense except for the KC mixup which wasn’t his fault.
Don – There’s something that nobody here is aware of …… Story has an opt-out after this season.
If he has a monster year the Sox wouldn’t NEED to trade him, because he would definitely be able to snag more money as a free agent next offseason.
Think about this, if not for the mixup with KC yesterday then Story wouldn’t have ANY errors on this season. That’s quite telling when the shortstop on a 19-error team isn’t responsible for any errors.
Story threw the ball away yesterday. He was definitely responsible for the error.
Again all, in my view that was a play Campbell should have made.
Campbell could have made the play. He flipped the ball to Story who threw it away.
That close to the bag should have been all Campbell.
Yes. Ideally, Campbell should have taken it himself. Looks like he was going take it himself, but he hesitated for some reason. I’m guessing he saw Story covering 2B and flipped it to him thinking that is what the veteran wanted and he is a rookie. In any case, Story then threw the ball and is responsible for the error.
Or Bregman to opt out and then Mayer can play third. Or maybe Mayer plays second and Campbell plays more left
Vlad Jr
Of course, Vlad Jr. Why didn’t I think of that?
@Ignorant, I read your comment in Homer Simpson’s voice. “I’m sorry Moe, I didn’t mean EVERYONE everyone” haha
Story will find his way to the IL before June I’m sure so Mayer will be up
Perfect to gain extra year and avoid super two.
Can’t the RedSox just track them using their iPhones or on the Life360 app?
Moving Story to a bench role shouldn’t be ‘shocking.’ Not for a player with a 75 OPS+ since the beginning of the 2023 season and with a defense that’s now roughly average.
Moving Story to the bench and bumping one of Gonzalez or Hamilton in order to get Mayer into the lineup should be almost automatic. It’s only organizational pride that keeps Story in a starting role for which he’s now completely unsuited.
So between story and yoshida youd have 40 million in 2 bench role players if that comes to pass and they both are there this team is cooked ..i get the prospect excitement but when was the last time multilple prospects came up and all immediatly produced at a super high level?.. not to rain on that parade but if this team is depending on these kids to get them till the postseason in 2025..its not happening
2023 2024 doesn’t matter. Only 2025 and forward.
He has to add 2023, it’s what drags his OPS+ down to push the narrative he wants.
Tigers3232
He has to add 2023, it’s what drags his OPS+ down
============================
Standard issue selection bias. Story is nothing special, but I’d bet on at least a league-average season. No chance they are benching him for a rookie.
*Sunk Cost Fallacies Apply.
Yoshida’s irrelevant in the matter of Story, so we can put him aside. The chances a rookie will come up and out produce Story are quite good, given the very low level of his production—but it’s even better that that from the Sox pov in that it’s only a matter of the rookie outproducing Gonzalez or Hamilton, since Story’s still on the roster. It’s
Mayer + Story vs
Story + Gonzalez (or Hamilton)
That’s an easy decision to make.
Pool – classic sunk cost fallacy. They don’t need to continue playing Yoshida and Story just because they’re paying them that money. If they aren’t producing, and there’s better internal options, the clear and obvious choice is to play them.
The trade market for story and Yoshida is minimal, if it even exists.
That being said, Mayer hasn’t played well enough to force the move. And neither has Anthony – although I’m not sure if that impacts Yoshida’s playing time. There really isn’t room for him at all in the roster.
Story will be on the IL within a few weeks and Mayer will be starting st short.
Then there’s that. It’s a problem that tends to solve itself. Or Story on the field is once again so obviously bad, so close to replacement level if not below it that the Sox FO has to admit it was a signing that just didn’t work out and bench him if not cut him..
Chris Sale would be nice!
I guess Vaughn Grissom got squeezed out due to injuries and lack of productivity!
The same thing they were expecting out if Sale..
Then in ’24, Sale wins a Cy Young and Grissom only plays in 55 games!
Plus the Braves got $17M ! Ouch!
How were the Red Sox supposed to predict Sale to go through a full season and win a cy young in his mid 30s…
Of course it turned for the worse for Boston but you have to try to put your mind in their shoes at the time
They couldn’t predict that. Even I in all my greatness couldn’t predict that. But 2/3 3/4 of a season under 4 era was predictable and that’s worth more than Grissom.
sad – The Cy Young was unexpected, but everyone knew if he could stay healthy it was possible. His pitching issues were always due to health, not talent. He’s a HOF caliber player.
I agree with you, their mind was in their shoes when they traded Sale and $17M for Grissom.
Because after paying Sale all that money to basically not pitch for 5 years, it made zero sense to not give him a shot at staying healthy in his final guaranteed contract year.
That’s the biggest reason why the trade was a huge mistake, there was only ONE YEAR left on his contract. And if they had stuck with him, not only would they have gotten a Cy Young Triple Crown season from him last year, they would have had his services this year at only $20M.
Crazy move would be to make Roman a 1B and have an OF of Duran, Campbell and Abreu. Cedanne as the 4th OF? Casas is looking like Bobby Dalbec all over again
That’s exactly where I think Roman should/will end up.
That’s a terrible idea. Anthony is a fine outfielder and it makes no sense to waste that at 1B
slow – You don’t move a solid outfielder to first base at Roman’s age, that is totally illogical.
Note where I said “Crazy move” I wouldn’t do it, but if Casas is this bad going forward then there can be a discussion
Mayer to first. Casas is a nightmare.
that makes even less than moving Anthony to 1B.
mike – Casas really is! He should have been charged with two errors last night, even Cora bashed Casas in the postgame interview. Casas is always staring at his fingernails, he just can’t focus on baseball.
Yes Triston, you have pretty nails ….. now concentrate and work on your fielding please!
Fever – the guy is a total head case right now. His fielding is atrocious and typically you live with that if the offense looks good, but that is just as bad right now. We’ve heard all offseason about how the defense got better if they may have taken a step back. I would seriously try Marcelo out at first.
mike – I think we all knew long ago Casas is a headcase and very unpredictable. The Red Sox know it, that’s partially why they didn’t offer Casas the extension contract he wanted. And Casas knows it, he admitted that’s why he was living in a hotel last year.
I’ve been saying since last summer, the rib injury could have a lingering effect on his swing. He seems to not be generating as much bat speed as pre-injury, probably because he’s afraid to let loose.
I definitely wouldn’t play Mayer at first.
Three reasons:
1) It would hinder Mayer’s development.
2) It would devalue him.
3) Casas will likely become a great hitter again, but he can’t do it if he’s not playing.
The most logical alignment would be Devers at first base (if he proves he can handle it), Casas at DH, and Mayer at 2B with KC in CF.
THAT is what I’d like to see.
I’d like to see Who on first, What on second, beyond that I Don’t Know.
Watching Casas since the start of the season. Last night’s game was his worst yet. He’s out in the twilight zone or something. He’ll prob never “rebound” back to even 25-30 hr.
I sure don’t know what’s going on in his head, but he’s def not a team player. Maybe he needs to break a nail or something to bring him back to reality??
Just happened to see this article with quotes from Casas after yesterday’s game. He does not sound like a headcase.
masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/triston-casas-takes-bl…
Dave – Casas benched today along with Duran.
The Red Sox are facing a LHP today. So, it is a good day to give Duran and Casas a day off. Not sure they are benched. If they are out again tomorrow then maybe they are benched.
Hey FPG, remember february when everyone on here was telling you and I that once Devers is off the field the rest of the team suddenly turns into Ozzie Smith? I remember….
Now, we want Casas to burn his glove, or better yet, DH…..like what(?) Backup to the left handed DH. Oh yeah Mayer can play 1B now….
We are second worst fielding team so far, and Bregman (remember him?) He officially has 3 errors and bounced one to first on Thursday that should’ve been #4.
This team is ill-constructed. That’s all I can say. Analytics doesn’t look at the team as a 26 member organism, it looks at 26 silos, each seperate from the other.
For the most part, we are now stuck with what we have. No, the Marlins aren’t rushing in with Alcantara for Yoshida and Raffaele.
It isn’t lack of talent. There’s plenty of talent here. Breslow and Cora are deploying it in a way in which “organizational philosophies” are forcing catchers to interfere, players to play out of position, pitch this way, everyone to swing so damn hard that they’ll lead the league in k’s.
A great horse trainer let’s the horse run his race and supports his strengths. The Sox Front Office seem to be doing the exact opposite, in forcing the players to play in some weird prescribed way.
Get the players to the field and then let them play, and we’ll finally see what we have. I don’t think this is another .500 team, but I also don’t think this is the players playing their game.
Chuck – Why would you move KC off 2B? Mayer will be playing SS or 3B, so who would play 2B? Remember, Meidroth isn’t with the Red Sox anymore. He was traded to the White Sox in the Crochet deal.
“Prospects are suspects until it’s been proven otherwise” – Chris “Mad dog” Russo.
It’s not like Mayer is always available but I think he will be up first
True. How about another poll: who ends up on the IL first, Story or Mayer?
Roman Anthony had a real hot start but he’s slipped a bit. Probably shouldn’t make too much of that. This probably comes down to injury. I voted for Mayer to come up first because he has more explicit paths to the majors *faster* this year.
1. Trevor Story getting hurt. It has been known to happen.
2. David Hamilton underperforms.
For Anthony to have a path, one of Wilyer Abreu or Cedanne Rafaela needs to get hurt. Wilyer is solid all-around and Cedanne is just a beast on defense. I guess if we include Duran here as well then…
…ahhh
…who knows.
Call it a toss up.
What about Yoshi? I think Breslow should trade him and Story while paying their entire contracts to get a couple good prospects back, like the Chris Sale trade. It may work out the exact same and both players have monster years, but roll the dice, the 26 man spots opened up will be valuable.
Casas is horrible. Why don’t they play Mayer at first in AAA and ditch Casas.
They think Cases is 30 40 hr year.
He’s a headcase. 30 or 40 hr and a WAR of 0.5.
again playing Mayer at 1B who is above average at worst at SS is a complete waste of his talents.
Promoting Roman Anthony offers the Red Sox an opportunity to enhance their offensive production and outfield defense immediately. His proven performance at Triple-A, combined with the team’s current needs, make a compelling case for his advancement. While Marcelo Mayer remains a valuable prospect, allowing him additional time to develop and recover fully from past injuries aligns with a prudent, long-term approach to roster management.
What a lousy display of major league team playing defence.
What a lousy display of a major league team hitting with risp
What a lousy display of major league pitching after the 5th issngs lately
This has been Cora’s team for the 5 years and it continues.
Cora needs to go as he can’t manage any of the above Obvious results says so. Years of results say so
It all begins with the manager and should end with him.
Pathetic tonight’s game Looks like a minor league team the worst ball team in the league.
I agree, but you have a lousy display of grammar.
Who cares what you think
You got something to say. Say it about the team idiot
Arrogance at it’s best. You sound so confident yet aren’t credible with that many errors. Now a personal attack… it takes one to be one.
And be named the second coming, only to turn into Bobby Dalbec!🤣🤣🤣
Hope they bring him up soon (either one) because this team is an embarrassment. Fire Cora already. I once liked the guy but he’s past his prime and cost us at least two to three games
I called the White Sox being good against us after getting beaten 8 games in a row.
I don’t understand why so many baseball insiders just can’t stop laying admiration upon Cora right and left. I just don’t see it. The guy stands there in the dugout with the same dumb bored look on his face the entire game. He just exudes indifference and a blase attitude.
Because they’re insiders and we’re outsiders?
I’ll never understand how the IP got elected.
So there’s that.
Trade. Casas. Seattle. Something. Something.
Couldn’t agree with you more on this.
I voted Mayer because I expect Story to get injured again and that will necessitate Mayer’s arrival
Devers rebounded nicely since bad start
Over 400avg , almost no Ks
Most RS fans don’t understand small sample sizes, missed spring training, etc.
I voted Mayer because I feel like he’s already had the kind of Spring that warranted him making the team, but honestly, it might come down to who on the MLB club gets injured first. Mayer and Anthony both deserve the promotion–I’m not sure there’s anything left for them to prove in AAA.
Casas has to go. His reaction times at the plate are terrible. His head is somewhere else.
He’s an automatic out every time he goes to the plate. Demote him to AAA, bring up Anthony. The season is still young – give Anthony some time at the plate to acclimate him to the bigs. Even if he’s gotta DH or play 1B.
The Red Sox could be the first team in history to lead the league in ERA while giving up the most runs.
Yeesh.
I think Roman Anthony is the first to be called up and probably relatively soon. They have already almost guaranteed the extra year of control I expect we see him soon. It’s best not to be fooled by Anthony’s start in AAA. When he makes contact he has hit a lot of screamers at people. His average exit velos are absurd something like 99.7 mph. He has barreled more balls than anyone in the International league and pitchers are nibbling against him. He’s not seeing very many good pitches to hit he has uncharacteristically chased a few pitches out of the zone he might be getting a little frustrated. He’s also a Florida boy who’s always started slowly then warms up as the weather gets warmer. I think he can show well in the bigs right now at the bottom of the order and will probably quickly get moved up in the order.
Mayer might get called sooner rather than later it really looks like Story’s arm is cooked. He threw a couple to the plate yesterday from shallow left as the cutoff man that were lollipop throws. It was terrible. Mayer isn’t ready imo but if Story is injured then you almost have to call him up. I’m concerned about Story’s arm.
I’m disappointed in Casas’s defense he was much better in the minors. I think he will hit just fine he’s also a Florida boy he will hit imo. His bat speed is the same as it was last year and still in the top 15% in the league. He has done well at scooping errant throws imo but his footwork is poor and there is no excuse for that.
It’s been a rough start but I have to believe better days are ahead.
Bruin – Chase Meidroth was promoted yesterday and had a sensational game at the plate and in the field. I know you follow the minors a lot, what do you think of him? He strikes me as a combination of Pedroia and Youk.
Mayer because Story will end up hurt
