5:00pm: Cronenworth tells Cassavell that the fracture was discovered from an MRI yesterday, which surprised him. He’s hoping for a quick return but the timeline is “open-ended”.
4:15pm: The Padres announced that infielder Jake Cronenworth has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 9, with a non-displaced right rib fracture. Infielder/outfielder Tyler Wade was selected to take his place on the roster. To make room for Wade on the 40-man, right-hander Matt Waldron was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Cronenworth was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s game, as seen in this video from MLB.com. He stayed in that game and also played on Monday and Tuesday, but was removed from the latter contest and didn’t play on Wednesday. Manager Mike Shildt downplayed the issue as cramping while Cronenworth himself believed he would be ready to play by Friday, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
It appears that the club has decided to send him to the IL instead. It’s unclear if he experienced some sort of setback or they just wanted to get him more rest. Since the IL stint has been backdated, he could be back in about a week if he’s healthy.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has also been battling some shoulder soreness this week and Jackson Merrill is on the IL with a hamstring strain, which left the Padres a bit short-handed this week. On Wednesday, they had Jose Iglesias at second base with an outfield rotation of Brandon Lockridge, Jason Heyward and Oscar González. That left Yuli Gurriel as the only non-catcher available off the bench for that game.
Wade, 30, will provide a bit more of a safety net. He’s never been much of a hitter, with a .217/.291/.289 line in his career, but he is a strong defender. He has experience playing all three outfield spots and the three infield spots to the left of first base. He didn’t break camp with the club this year but accepted an outright assignment after clearing waivers. Now the injury situation has quickly created a need for his return to the majors.
To open a spot for Wade, the club has made Waldron unavailable until late May. He started the season on the 15-day injured list with an oblique strain. He can return 60 days from that initial IL placement. His current status is unclear but it seems the Friars don’t expect him back in the next six weeks or so.

Probably means Tati 60 day IL. We’re screwed.
He’s leading off tonight
Thank Heavens! Cheers!
LFGSD! Welcome back Wader
That HBP looked bad. I said at the time he was going to be peeling blood for a week. But looks like a broken rib and that still sucks.
Yuuup, get well soon Jake! Be careful at Petco this weekend, it’s falling Rox season!
Seems like SD played down to competition and fairs poorly against Rocks in recent years. Hopefully, that boogaboo is behind them.
Let’s get Hoeing, Reynolds and Yu back (and Merrill and Cro now) and LFGSD!
@gwynning. Wade is like a case of herpes. He always comes back. I’m glad the angels passed him off to another team
Hey man, GatorWade is chill! He might even play a role in a W tonight!
@gwynning he went to my high-school different years. I just get ptsd brings me back to when the angels had a whole bunch of glove first infielders that hit

So much for that.
Player optimism and/or just didn’t realize a hairline fracture of a rib was the source of the pain. Reasonable.
With hairline fractures, there’s often swelling and lots of blood and water being directed towards the area as a response, which makes it both harder to see the fracture on an X-Ray and feel the pain. It’s definitely not uncommon for the hairline fracture to be discovered a few days after the incident once that’s subsided.
Speaking from experience too.
Depth sentence. No depth.
Thankfully, they have this guy locked up for the next 5 years. They must be beating off front offices with a stick. Not the most effective way to beat dudes off but that’s San Diego for you. Kony 2012
Huh?
You heard me, nerd.
I’ve always preferred hands over sticks.
Gotta take what you can get
Good thing that they banked some early wins. This lineup is looking dire. An everyday platoon of Iglesias/Wade and Heyward starting in RF..
Maybe I didn’t pay as close attention in the past, but it seems like this year has been the year of the depth piece player being DFA’d/released/re-signed by the same team multiple times as part of various roster moves relative to IL stints, etc.
Like- what is the conversation with Wade or Ottavino where they’re signed, called up, DFA’d/released/re-signed, etc.
As I understand it, it has to do with time spent on the various rosters/team options to call up/send down players on split contracts and these DFA’s/re-signings are a necessary contractual strategy to keep them in the organization despite no clear place in the majors or minors?
Yeah, these players are out of option years, so teams attempt to shuffle them around AAA/MLB as additional depth. If they like the organization or feel like there’s a road to playing time, they may stick around. Teams can also incentivize their minor league contracts with opt-out dates that allow them to declare free agency if they’re not with the big league club by a certain date.
The sky is falling and no, Annie, the sun will NOT come out tomorrow. Sheesh.
Padres are deliberately creating a team culture that leans on adaptability, with versatility at key positions (Wade’s multi-position value) serving as a buffer against any future injuries or underperformance. This is a long-term investment in roster resilience, and it’s a trend that may become more pronounced as the season progresses.
Do you even truly believe half the crap that comes out of your cornhole?
I think he’s just lonely and likes listening to himself talk.
Pita, the fact that he is right and Shildt has said basically the same thing doesn’t really register with you, does it?
He speaks on something Schildt says cus he uses AI and it’s pulling from other resources. The vocabulary and sentence structure he uses is similar to alot of YouTube documentaries.
If many more used AI instead of commenting themselves, comment sections would just be akin to a Google search. But York has this odd yearning to try and sound smart and pays no mind to the fact it’s tacky and selfish among other things.
Yes the Padres are built around versatility but I don’t think they were talking about the almighty Tyler Wade from AAA when discussing it
Me personally since Waldron was added to the 60 day IL I would have just added Eguy Rosario back to the 40 man roster and called him back up instead of wade. Idk how he keeps getting so many chances and over 100 at bats each season almost. He is garbage on offense and his defense, even if it’s pretty good, does nothing to overcome that very poor offense. Plus his career WAR is negative. at least Eguy is younger and can hit decently and with power to boot. Plus his career WAR is positive. I just don’t understand it.

Stat lines of TW and ER at AAA after both went unclaimed.
Go with the hot hand and also, if Lockridge is starting need a speed option on bench for late in games.
It’s mostly matchups and speed, but Wade’s bat is awful, so I get you. I’d play Iglesias every day at 2B until Jake’s back unless Manny or X need a day off.
I too would play Ig over TW. The question was Eguy v TW.
I should’ve been clearer: I think they picked Wade over Eguy because they can platoon him and Iglesias, and all the current infielders, minus Arraez, are righties. I’m fine with the move overall; I don’t really get the Wade love in the fanbase/org. Nice guy, I’m sure.
I don’t think it’s a platoon. Iglesias is likely the primary 2B until Cronenworth is back.
Wade hitting left handed though is probably a big factor since he was the only left handed bat on the bench tonight. The only other lefty on the 40 man is Ornelas, but with Oscar Gonzalez up they already have a 4th OF. If they were going to call up Eguy they’d probably have to swap Gonzalez and Ornelas to keep some RH/LH balance.
Yeah excellent points all around. Iglesias’ platoon righty splits are tolerable, so if Wade is here for pinch-running and extra defensive coverage, I can’t fault that move.
Iglesias is awful with the bat. Since the calendar turned to 2025 he has hit two balls out of the infield including the groundball single tonight.
Eguy has just 5 at bats and 1 game started since not being claimed. Spent a week in Peoria.
The pitcher who threw the pitch that resulted in lost time injury to the batter should IMMEDIATELY be suspended by MLB and remain so until such time that the injured player is able to resume playing at the MLB level
The antiquated one-sided and outdated handling of HBP where one team loses the services of a member of their 26 man roster while the pitcher’s team gets by with: “OOPS, S-O-R-R-Y, Well it’s just part of the game!!, is no longer acceptable and has not been reasonable for quite awhile.
MLB needs to take action and eliminate this injustice.
Uh, no
How many accounts do you have?
If the Padres need a 2b man we have McNeil coming back or they can have Baty, Blackburn and a AA prospect for Michael King ?
Plenty of options to explore / rotate as necessary in SD / AAA for 2b while Cro sits for another week.
Iglesias should be fine on short term.
Jake said that when he returns is simply a question of pain tolerance.
What an incredible 5th inning
I hate when I think it’s just a bug bite or scratch and it’s a dang broken rib…
And Iglesias goes 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. We good…lol
