It wasn’t long ago that the Yankees’ lineup was almost entirely comprised of right-handed hitters, but the additions of such players as Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr., plus the emergence of in-house options like Austin Wells, Ben Rice, and switch-hitter Jasson Dominguez has brought a lot more balance to the Bronx. GM Brian Cashman even told reporters (including The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner) yesterday that he would be “happier” with another right-handed bat available on the roster, and that the Yankees are exploring such options as other teams make their end-of-spring cuts.
“I think some choices have emerged in camp, then it comes down to if those choices are better than anything else that might exist outside that you could either trade for and that you are comfortable enough giving up what it would take to get,” Cashman said. “We’re measuring that versus options that might get the bad word in another camp that they’re not making it and all of a sudden we’re competing for those services.”
Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu will both be on the injured list for the foreseeable future, leaving the roster short of two prominent bats that were expected (particularly in Stanton’s case) for regular roles. Ideally, a right-handed hitter that could handle at least one of left field or third base would be the best fit, as such a player could step into the outfield if Dominguez struggles in his first extended stint of MLB playing time, or help out at a third base position that remains a question mark as Opening Day approaches.
The Yankees have such a player available in utilityman Pablo Reyes, who has amassed quite a bit of playing time at third, in left, and at other positions over his six big league seasons. Reyes hasn’t hit much at the big league level, but he has hit decently well this spring, to the point that he seems to be on track to have his minor league contract selected to New York’s Opening Day roster. That decision would put Reyes in position to share some at-bats at the hot corner with switch-hitter Oswaldo Cabrera.
Whether or not Reyes makes the team remains to be seen, as he could yet be the odd man out should the Yankees indeed bring a new player into the mix. At the very least, Reyes seems to be a higher priority to the team than former top prospect Oswald Peraza. As Kirschner observes, Cashman talking so openly about a need for right-handed hitting help doesn’t exactly bode well for Peraza’s future in the Bronx.
Peraza burst into the majors with an .832 OPS over 58 plate appearances during his 2022 rookie season, but that was reduced to a .539 OPS in 191 PA in 2023, as he didn’t rise to the occasion when given more of an opportunity at third base with LeMahieu on the injured list. A shoulder injury then delayed his start to the 2024 season, and Peraza ended up making only four MLB appearances last year.
Both Reyes and Peraza are out of minor league options, so they would have to first go through waivers before New York could them send them to Triple-A. Kirschner feels Peraza wouldn’t last long on the waiver wire given his solid defense, plus his former top-100 prospect status would surely attract teams that might feel he needs a change of scenery. Having two out-of-options players on the bench isn’t ideal anyway from a roster flexibility standpoint, so it will be interesting to see how the Yankees proceed with this duo, or if a new face is brought into the organization.
Brandon Drury
Recovering from a fractured thumb.
Slipped my mind. Oops.
As a Sox fan, just say no to Reyes.
Considering? Little late to be looking for a RH bat. If only they were considering it during all the free agent signings. Dang it.
Sweetness: Drury was so very, very bad in NY last he played here. I don’t think either side wants to see a reunion.
Brandon Drury posted a 112 wRC+ as a member of the Mets, (3rd best mark of his career) ,274/,307/.476 over 51 games. How exactly was he “very, very bad”?
wexterrules: We’re talking the Yankees, not the Mets. He had -..3 WAR for the Yankees and hit ..176. His decent production with the Mets doesn’t erase the bed-wetting he did in the Bronx. He was absolutely loathed by the fans as he was so bad it was comical.
Had a great spring with the ChiSox hope he’s staying in town.
I didn’t realize he had a previous stint with the Yankees. I didn’t do certain basic research and I own that.
All good we’re here to have some fun no written exams.
Trust me you didn’t miss much.
Brandon Drury has been with 7 teams. I think I forgot about that or didn’t realize. I at least knew he was with my “cursed” Angels.
The Yankees are missing the boat with the Cardinals Nolan Arenado!!!
Arenado still has and will have in the future “Gold Glove Talent!”
He’s a contact hitter who would fare well in Yankee Stadium!!
The Yankees have the Cardinals over a barrel!
Because John Mozeliak has the Cardinals in such a mess, —— The Cardinals — (to save face for Mozeliak) —- would eat a larger portion of Arenado’s salary!!
Plus, because of the bind John Mozeliak has gotten the Cardinals in, —-
The Yankees would not have to give up any decent prospects to get him.
In other words —— the Yankees could absolutely steal Arenado from the Cardinals!!
While upgrading themselves both Defensively and Offensively as well!!!
For the love of God what part of Arenado doesn’t wanna be in the Bronx don’t fans understand. He vetoed the Yanks and Astros. This is almost as ridiculous as the sign Bauer idea.
Totally agree with you about Arenado. The Yankees played this game with 3B last year and it lead to them trading for Chisholm. Don’t know why they just don’t pull the trigger now. I understand they’re unwilling to take on any additional payroll due to the Luxury Tax penalties. I just think he’d be an ideal fit for this team and NY in general. Bc if they’re really expecting to get 162-games of 3B services from the combination of Oswaldo, Oswald, and/or DJL they’re going to be in SERIOUS trouble. I just hope that waiting until the deadline to make a move could end up costing them much more compared to making the deal now
JD Martinez
That’s their best option, a good one too, he looks good in that lineup.
Luis Robert Jr.!
He is ready for 2025 season.
LRJ is smokin’ hot coming out of spring training.
Always felt once the Yankees decided on Volpe being the teams SS they should have traded Peraza right then.
But nope another high end prospect held on for too long, and is pretty much worthless now.
The plan originally was Volpe at 2B and Peraza at SS. Volpe improved his D the past two years so he’s sticking. Gleyber’s defense was never the answer. I expect Peraza to be traded for another utility player with more offensive upside and one they can stash in AAA and has options. Reyes will break camp on borrowed time until DJL recovers (and then gets hurt again). Cashman must be collecting Hal’s DJL insurance money for keeping him around.
why would a team trade for Peraza when they might be able to sign him for peanuts off the waiver wire because the Yankees can’t manage a roster
John, so that they could make sure they got him instead of another team ahead of them in the pecking order. And just because they’re making a trade doesn’t mean they’ll be giving up a top prospect. It’ll be nothing more than a lottery ticket.
Bro. Please show me the article that says the Yankees envisioned Volpe as their future 2Bman. That NEVER happened. Volpe was always their SS of the future. They passed up Corey Seager and Carlos Correa because of Volpe.
Mitch Haniger
I’m game to give him a shot for league minimum.
Do they not believe in everson pereira? Not a Yankees fan, just curious from the outside looking in on why he seems to get passed over
He’s had only 158 PA in AAA.
Think they want him to get reps in AAA since last year was pretty much a lost year. He won’t play very much in the majors right now so will play in AAA.
Twopitch: No they don’t. He’s Estavan Florial 2.0. His K rate and swinging strike rate are both terrible. Unless something profound changes he’s looking like a good bet to play in a few KBO all-star games.
Peraza’s struggles are a red flag for a potential trade, but his defensive value and past pedigree could push him to another team’s radar. The real long-term play, though, could involve shifting towards a more fluid roster strategy—investing in multi-positional utility players who can contribute in low-leverage situations, ultimately lowering the dependency on high-cost, injury-prone stars like Stanton.
jon berti
wait…
He is cubs now…
I feel like Yankee fans have been hearing about guys like Everson Pereira and Peraza, etc. for years- like since 2010 or 2015 or whatever and I know that’s because they were signed when they were like 15 or 16 years old and it takes a few years to mature into the full musculature/physical growth that facilitates their skillsets at the pro level, but it really does feel like Pereira and Peraza in particular have been bandied about as The Future and clearly they ain’t it.
Greg Bird- couldn’t stay healthy, was fairly one dimensional
Jesus Montero- got called up, seemed to be the real deal, was immediately traded for peanuts and then disappeared.
Anthony Volpe- Seems to be legit, will hang around, have a career, win some golden gloves, etc. but he ain’t The Second Coming of Whomever. I think he’ll be adequate, but he won’t be Prime A-Rod or Prime Jeter, etc.
I just keep wondering what are the Yankees doing with these prospects? Are they signing the wrong guys or is it just kinda like batting averages, where a relatively low average for success is still considered extremely high.
Etc.
Yankees prospects are always over hyped and mostly bust. Spencer Jones is going to be the next bust.
Yeah he’s the current one where it’s like “we keep hearing about him but it isn’t actually happening.” They do seem to love that Cody Bellinger body type in prospects- tall, gangly, etc but it’s rare that those work out for them. Spencer Jones feels like another “what if” we will be discussing firmly in the past tense 2-3 years from now as he languishes, then gets traded for not much at all.
the Yankees more so than maybe any other organization have a tendency to inflate the valuation of their prospects. In the past done primarily to use said prospects as trade bait. It is a combination of the media saturation in NY and an internal methodology. Obviously it hasn’t worked for 20 years
Yeah that’s what I am thinking. It hasn’t worked for like 20 years.
Heck, I remember the era of the Clint Frazier Hype when he was this massive trade chip for the Guardians and then he was in the Yankees system and then…. where is he now? I get it- he had bad concussions and may have been too emotionally sensitive for the industry or the game or whatever…
But yeah the Yankees have *almost* no luck with their farm system, with some truly rare exceptions like Aaron Judge, who’s career is already legendary at this point.
@trillionaire to be fair Volpe was supposed to be a very good/all star player not AROD or Jeter, 2 guys with 3000+ hits, HOF careers. That said, he’s still got a year or two to figure it out before he’s truly just another SS prospect gone “bust” as a below avg hitter.
That said the Yankees should have traded Peraza and I was beating the drum to trade Gil for a 3B while he still had peak value since I don’t believe in him. Peraza I DID believe in so maybe they’re right to ignore me anyway.
TTO, I believe is the Jay Buhnner syndrome….but next in line will be Spencer Jones. They are promoting him as the rh version of Judge and letting pass opportunity by opportunity to get a top of the rotation arm and who knows if he ever will e an established mlb player
aaron judje is a rh hitter RAYSASIN. not a lh.
Arenado!
I think he’d veto that trade. I get the sense that Arenado wants to avoid the Bigger Markets like NYY, Mets, BoSox, etc.
Why was he all for a trade to Boston then?
Because I was haphazardly replying without double checking the details, just am aware Arenado is weird about where he will play at this point, which is his right.
Plus I said I get the sense, not that he’d absolutely refuse a trade to a larger market higher profile club.
Don’t twist your ankle backtracking there, Tril!
He also wants to have a shot at winning a world series and I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation for the Yankees this year.
You must be the GM for the sox trying to sabotage the Yankees
I feel like the Yankees have been ‘looking for right handed hitting depth’ for a month.
Hi Brian
HEDO, the antagonistic Mets slugger from Rookie of the Year is available.
If the Yankees lose Peraza for nothing it’d just be another reason Cashman is at the end of his rope. I don’t trust this roster to win in what I think is a wide open American League.
I have been pro cashman for years, but since 2022 he’s struggled to make great moves. Getting Soto was brilliant even at the steep cost of King, but losing him to the Mets makes it feel like it wasn’t a win, even reaching the World Series last year is tainted by the lack of talent apparent on the roster this year and that 5th inning. This roster has a low floor.
I think we have 2 or 3 years of Judge before age takes hold of him (I pray I’m wrong), and I’d hate to think we can’t get back because Cole got hurt but it feels that way.
Pablo Reyes? Really? That’s the answer?
They have Judge, Goldschmidt and Volpe as right handed bats. Stanton and DJ on the IL, so sure, they lost some. Still, those 3 are pretty decent right handed bats. If there is a weak link in that lineup, don’t you think it would be Rice as the DH?
With 10 players on the IL, they have other problems besides enough right handed bats.
Their bench is basically all lefty. It would be great to get an all-star level righty third baseman but what they’re talking about is nothing more than a decent righty bench bat.
David Villar, come on down
Duvall?
Now that all the quality options are gone they decide they need another bat?! Incompetence!
Meant to elaborate on my Duvall suggestion, I’d lean towards an outfielder that can provide solid to above average defense and some pop to keep LHP honest. An alternative to putting Grisham in VS LHP when we want to spell judge at DH and sit rice VS strong LHP.
Should really trade Grisham straight up for a rhb, if possible.
Would rather have Franmil Reyes
Too often the yanks don’t believe in their young players, let them go and they do well elsewhere
For example thairo Estrada did pretty decently in SF
And then they let JP Sears got for nothing in return and he is an excellent pitcher that just needs a good team to play for
Thank you Captain Oblivious.
Is it too early to call Jasson a bust yet?
