Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling will both be starting the season on the Tigers’ injured list, while Wenceel Perez is also a bit of a question mark after he received a cortisone shot to deal with a lingering back problem. With so many absences already in the Detroit outfield, the team is getting creative in looking for answers, as manager A.J. Hinch told reporters (including the Detroit Free Press’ Jeff Seidel) that Spencer Torkelson has been getting in some outfield work, and will play right field in the Tigers’ game with the Pirates on Monday.
Hinch made it clear that Torkelson will get “just a sprinkle” of time in right field and “you’re not going to see him out there routinely….but we’d like it to be part of the availability in game work.” Even if the Tigers still view Torkelson as a first base/DH candidate, adding some versatility obviously can’t hurt his overall resume, plus it presents another avenue to get his bat into the lineup.
Torkelson played some outfield during his summer league days and at college at Arizona State, but since being selected first overall in the 2020 draft, Torkelson has played only third and first base as a professional. Nevertheless, Torkelson is “excited for an opportunity” in a new role, and is happy to help the team as much as possible: “We had really key players kind of go down this spring, and…in the time being, we got to find ways to compete and win, and I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Despite his top-prospect status, Torkelson has yet to really get going at the MLB level, as he followed up a promising 2023 campaign with a borderline disastrous 2024. Torkelson hit only .219/.295/.374 over 381 plate appearances, though his offense did pick up after he returned to the Tigers following a Triple-A stint of over two and a half months. After Detroit signed Gleyber Torres this winter and subsequently moved Colt Keith from second to first base, there was speculation that Torkelson might even be a trade chip, as the Tigers seemed to be squeezing him into a part-time DH role at best.
However, Torkelson has been on a tear at the plate this spring, perhaps helping his chances at a more regular turn in a DH role. Torkelson’s case for playing time has been helped by the fact that he is one of relatively few right-handed hitters within a Tigers lineup that tilts heavily to the left, plus the outfield injuries could mean that Kerry Carpenter gets more work in right field than at DH. Torkelson himself now could be considered for the occasional cameo in right field as situations warrant.
It now seems possible we could get the unlikely combination of Torkelson in right field and Javier Baez in center field at some point during a game, which speaks to the depth issues that have been caused by this sudden spate of outfield injuries. Chances are that Detroit will simply lean more on utilitymen Andy Ibanez or Zach McKinstry to fill holes while Meadows and Vierling are out, but finding more versatility on the bench (even from unexpected sources) is now a must
We are quick to label these guys but it takes certain players longer than others, He is still young, I’m hoping he can still live up to the billing.
Exactly, and there is a long list of former big league players that seemed to be toast only to later pan out. Torkelson can look at guys like Alex Gordan and Phil Nevin who went from being top draft picks to apparent busts to studs.
It would be cool if that happens with Tork with the Tigers and not some other team.
Houston found that out with JD Martinez.
I kept saying he had little value based on his lack of MLB production as basically a AAAA player but it would be a great story if he finds himself and becomes a good bat for the Tigers. Defense in the OF would be a bonus
Phil Nevin did not become a stud. He had an handful of years that were good. That doesn’t make him a stud. Alex Gordon was know for his glove and arm, not for his bat. Tork, is a below average fielder. He doesn’t run well. Can’t seem to adjust to minor or major league pitchers. Maybe he figures it out. More thank likely he’s a bust.
40 homer year… multiple .300 seasons… multiple 100 rbi years… MVP votes… He was a stud for a few years 1999 to 2004.
He’s got the right attitude. He’s at least trying to help the team and give himself more chances to get his bat in the lineup.
This is what year 3 of the breakout propaganda with him and Jordan Walker? Jasson Dominguez will soon also join the list of over hyped role players. It’s over friendo he will never be a star. Should still make some pretty good money in a 10-12 year career if the power plays.
Do you think it was shoddy player development that doomed these guys, or were they just not “it” to begin with ??
Prospects routinely get overhyped. Torks numbers in the minors were great before they called him up. From what I’ve read the biggest problem was he was hard to coach and did not listen.
Sob I think the quality of competition in the majors is just insane and players lose confidence when they don’t find immediate success out the gates after dominating the minors. Ever since you were a teenager you were the best of the best in your hometown maybe even the entire state, then a major league pitcher is blowing 99 up and in your kitchen for a strike and you start to think you’re not cut out.
Tork had 31 games of dominance in A ball… AA and AAA he was decent. 133 games in AAA… .236/ 353/ .454 isn’t dominant.
I hope l that’s the case with Jo Adell and Mickey Moniak. Jo still has the potential to be a stud.
If he ever gets it, I can see Jo hitting 40 HRs a year batting . 270 and a. 360 OBA
Jo Adell? Give me some of what you are smoking.
Might as well.
Does this mean kcarp will be fulltime OF even vs lefties?
Carp was asking to play more against left handers so it certainly seems like a good possibility. Hinch said they were considering it.
His sample size is so small against LHP recently. I say let him try until he proves he can’t.
I can see starting a right handed hitter against a lefty starter. The thing with Carpenter last year is he got pulled early when the righty starter got pulled. 2 games he left in the 5th inning. 3 games he left in the 6th. 4 games he left in the 7th. He could have had an opportunity to hit later in all those games. The 8th on, I can see him getting pulled… but he got pulled 15 times in the 8th inning. Give him a chance and let him stay in the games longer.
That’s what I meant. Except your comment was more eloquent and had stats to back it up lol
José Alvarado is throwing absolute gas against the Tigs in ST today. Almost every pitch has been over 100 mph.
Wow – 1 IP, 3 K’s: Greene, Torres and Carpenter
Hopefully this works but Tork should play LF so the Tigers can play Greene in CF and Carpenter in RF to maximize hitting. Seems like Hinch is making it mandatory for every position player to be proficient at 3 positions
It would be very entertaining to see Tork play CF.
I hope Tork makes everyone eat their words and forces Colt back to second base. Torres can learn another position too or DH, but if we have that problem we are going to have a good season! It would be an incredible feeling if we have to platoon really good players because everyone is playing well. That will help cover for the injuries that will happen during the season. We could well have the best team in baseball by October if everyone reaches their potential.I’ve been a Tiger fan for over 60 years, and this club has the potential to be the best team of them all if everything goes right. Granted it’s a big ask, but anything is possible!
Torres is only here for this season anyway. So regardless, either Keith or Jung will be back at 2B next year. McGonigle might be close by then too.
Tigers are loaded w/prospect IFs; a few OFs & Ps as well.
It’s really too bad Colt can’t play 3B anymore with that shoulder.
Tigs have a glut of 2B. With Jung not looking like he’s going to make it at 3B, I can see the Tigs sending him back to 2B at Toledo and ultimately trading him. I think McGonigle is the future 2B, nbt Colt.
I think Colt would have moved to 1B eventually anyway because of McGonigle’s can’t-miss status as a hitter. But the Tigers think of Colt in the same vein, or they wouldn’t have signed him to that contract.
That commitment to Colt is why they’ve been adamant about Tork not playing 1B. I could see Tork getting traded too.
They need to lock up Riley for life.
It’s apparent that Torkleson’s biggest issue to overcome is in making adjustments, the same with Jo Adell. I love seeing Post-Hype prospects finally becoming good to great players. Everyone falls in love with the hot new thing (Top-Level Prospects). You now get all of these rating numbers from 20 to 80 for baseball tools that suits and scouts use for determining their draft and trade decisions, but those are only physical tools. There are no baseball tool categories for mental acuity or the ability to make adjustments.
The latter is the risk you take in drafting. Will the prospect ever become a contributing major leaguer? I’m rooting for Tork!
As are we a;ll, Trputahni!!
Vierling is a huge loss. They didn’t need a over priced third basemen with him in the line up. If Tork is not sharing time at third, then I believe right field could be a real disaster with him there. Sure give him some time out there, but that is a tricky field to play.
At least his play at first might give him some assistance in right field with those crazy balls that go out there. I was hoping he’d be at third with Vierling down. Kriedler, or Baez might not hit enough there.. If Tork could platoon with Carp in right it would solve a lot of problems.
The Tigers have no shortage of platoon guys so they’ll mix and match. My worry with Tork in right is his speed and arm. If you can’t throw a dart to second base it’s triple city for the other teams on balls they hit to the corner.
Kreidler won’t make the team. McKinistry is good defensively so Kreidler has nothing on him. They are trying Baez out at other positions too so again no room at the inn.
If Hinch let’s Carp play against lefthanders, which is what Carp asked for, then that will limit the ABs that Tork or Malloy get covering him off against lefties. One article said Malloy has looked decent at 1B too and they are both hitting well this spring. Sone interesting decisions ahead for the next round of cuts!
McKinstry is the one that is in real trouble.. If they decide to make Baez a backup 2/3/ss with possible CF. Thenwhy have McKinstry.
I’m not campaigning for McKinstry by any means. Just saying Kreidler sucks on offence worse than he does and fiesnt desrrve a spot. Id take Jones over Kreidler. Baez is terrible too for that matter, but maybe the surgery will help. I’ll believe it when I see it though.
Baez for Arenado. The Tigers kick in 10 mil next year and 20 mil in 27. It sounds steep, but it’s a good deal for both sides.
Any deal to ship out Baez is a good one 😉 The Tigers would definitely have to pay to ship Baez out. At this point he is a backup.
Maybe they work some other players in who could use a fresh start. Walker? Gorman? Tork? Manning? And of course the Tigers might have to throw in some prospects as well to balance things out.
Tork batting is hard to watch most of the time. For all of his Torkbombs he hit in 2023, he is probably the least frightening batter for opposing pitchers to face in a clutch situation. He is 2 for 24 batting with the bases loaded since getting promoted ( no extra base hits and 10 strikeouts). It appears to be an opportunity to coach him, but I wonder if he is coachable.
Think of what you just said. An average hitter would expect to be 6 or 7 for 24 in any situation, so you are essentially calling him a deadbeat because 4 or 5 ABs didn’t work out
I’m not really calling him a deadbeat. I am wondering if he puts too much pressure on himself in those types of situations. Like you said yourself, if he just produced to his average at-bat he would have four more hits and at least one extra base hits.
We get it, he was 1/1 that is why they are going to great lengths to treat him with kid gloves and are trying to shoehorn him somewhere, anywhere. Torkelson should be honing his craft in the minor leagues.
With today’s analytics, I would think that the number one overall pick in the draft would be a sure thing! Mize and Torkelson shouldn’t be having all these problems adjusting if they were so much better than their peers in college. Apparently they weren’t!
Go talk to Mickey Moniak and Royce Lewis. Both are #1 overall picks, but hardly superstars.
Lewis is when he is healthy.
You can have all the analytics you want but you are still drafting 18-22 year olds, so many variables.
The stats on overall number 1’s becoming superstars or even regulars is quite frightening. Go look it up.
Mize & Tork are 2 different cases. Mize had TJ, so lost a lot of time with that, then rehabbing. In addition, pitchers suffered more than hitters during the time lost to the covid fiasco IMO. Mize is just now getting healthy again and what I’ve seen of him in ST has been outstanding. IMO, he’s earned #4 and #5 is between Jobe & Maeda.
That’s right.
They really give themselves too much credit, don’t they?
Paging Alex Verdugo Paging Alex Verdugo
Hard no.
Don’t expect Meadows or Vierling back before July, if at all. I think Hinch is kind of signaling that.
It was mentioned that Javy Baez is going to get some CF time.
Why?
Guess.
The Tiger’s #1 and #2 CF options are not going to be playing for a while.
Greene is too valuable to risk injuring in CF.
Perez might not hit enough. Ditto, McKinstry. Kreidler and Ja Jones might not hit either.
#2 prospect Max Clark probably starts in Erie. If he rakes and gets to Toledo by June, maybe he comes to the rescue in August.
Hinch is looking for options.
Billy Butler Jr is too heavy.
Bustelson.
I love Tork, but he’s going to make an oak tree look like Al Kaline.
The Tigers are about to play with fire with this outfield situation. Let’s be realistic about things… Vierling’s injury is not minor, he could miss a substantial amount of time. And Meadows nerve issue seems to be hugely problematic and considering they haven’t had any success with him yet, and right now it’s reported he can’t throw or swing a bat, he too could miss a lot of time, potentially even have a career ending issue if the nerve doesn’t come back. The Tigers have no real OF depth to speak of that presents a viable solution if these are both long term injuries, as they both look to be. The Tigers have a lot riding on this season, Skubal is near the end of his control years and is in his prime. They have tremendous pitching. If Baez can bounce back and find his game again, they have the potential to be a real force in the league. But, they need a legitimate CF who can field and hit and they do not have that, and going into the season without that, trying to sneak by playing guys like McKinstry, Ibanez, Baez, Tork, Malloy, J. Jones and Perez in the OF is a huge problem that could really hurt the team in the early going and cause lasting damage to the season. The Tigers would be well served making a trade to get Luis Robert from Chicago. He’s on a 3 year, $55 mil deal. The Tigers have the depth to trade from, I’d say Clark and Jobe are untouchable prospects, but anyone else could be on the table. And then if/when Meadows and Vierling both make full recoveries, you deal with the personnel issue at that point. But, it’s crazy to think Tork in the OF would be passable. Or Baez in CF when he has never played CF once in his career. Or significant playing time from McKinstry, Ibanez, Perez or Malloy, J. Jones or even Baddoo, who still lingers, wouldn’t be a huge drag on this team.
Perez can supply similar numbers to Vierling, with less power. Malloy has the potential to bat in the middle of the order for Detroit…potential. But…they are both a huge step down from Meadows and Vierling defensively. They may have to shift Greene back to CF and play Carp more in the OF where he is at least league average. Perez, Greene and Carp in the outfield is the best bet in house defensively with Ibanez sprinkled in there and at 3B. Tork and/or Malloy splitting DH with the occasional start at 1B makes sense.
If they went after an upgrade though I wouldn’t be sad 😉
A sprinkling of Javy & Tork is just enough to say we let them get a few reps out of position to make the team, and to start to phase them out.
To start the season, they should put Greene in LF, Perez in CF & Carp in RF & Tork at DH. They should also give Carp more ABs against LH’ers earlier in the season now that MV & PM are out.
Tork.
It would be nice if he breaks out this year.
Tork can make good throws from 3B to 1B so he should be able to hit the cutoff man getting balls back to the INF from RF or LF.
Tigers may need to make a deal for another CF.
Former Tigers top prospect is starting in CF for Marlins and wouldn’t be expensive in a trade.
Tork is hitting this spring. His swing looks great 4 Homer’s in 33 ab. Playing right field in a pinch if they had too but Reese Olson could probably play right also. Just kidding but Reese is a good athletic. Might be best to trade for a decent fielding right hand hitter. Tigers have a lot of young players in the minors to offer for a reasonable outfielder
Most people will see this move as a reaction to injuries. It’s not. It’s a proactive play to set up a roster move that hasn’t been announced yet.
I think it’s cool that, in the space of a dozen or so spring training games, Tork went from a guy who looked like he was out of the picture to a guy who they not only WANT in the lineup, but who they’ll send out to a new position to get him there.
