With baseball officially back for all 30 clubs, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on as we head into the weekend:
1. Players in DFA Limbo:
In the run-up to Opening Day, a number of players — many of them out of minor league options — were designated for assignment to clear space for prospects or veteran non-roster players who won an Opening Day job in spring training. MLBTR’s Anthony Franco took a look yesterday at the 23 players who were DFA’d ahead of Opening Day, including a former consensus top-100 prospect in Oscar Colas.
The window during which players can remain in limbo following a DFA lasts one week, during which time clubs must either work out a trade involving the player or place him on waivers to be claimed by any interested club. Should they clear waivers, some players (i.e. those with three-plus years of service or a prior outright assignment) will be able to elect free agency and pursue an opportunity elsewhere on their own terms. Others will simply be assigned outright to the minor leagues and serve as non-roster depth for their current clubs.
2. Flaherty returns to Los Angeles:
The Tigers are in Los Angeles facing the Dodgers, and right-hander Jack Flaherty (3.17 ERA in 2024) is poised to take the mound today for Detroit. It’s a homecoming for the right-hander, who was traded from the Tigers to the Dodgers last summer and pitched well down the stretch before being part of their postseason rotation as they stormed to their second World Series championship in five years. In his first start of the season, he’ll now face many of those teammates with whom he celebrated a World Series win just a few months ago. On the bump opposite Flaherty for the Dodgers today is righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who pitched five innings of one-run ball against the Cubs in the Tokyo Series earlier this month to kick off his own regular season. The game is set to begin at 7:10pm local time in Los Angeles.
3. Sugano to make MLB debut, others to make team debuts:
On Sunday, the Orioles will wrap up a four-game set against the Blue Jays with right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano on the mound opposite veteran righty Chris Bassitt (4.16 ERA in 2024). Sugano, 35, is a veteran of 12 seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He’s been sensational in NPB play throughout his career, with a lifetime 2.43 ERA across more than 1800 innings of work with the Yomiuri Giants. Sugano enjoyed a vintage final season in NPB last year, posting a 1.67 ERA in 156 2/3 frames despite a strikeout rate of just 18.3%. Now that he’s in his mid-30s, Sugano will get the opportunity to test himself against MLB players for the first time, facing a lineup that features noted sluggers like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander in a game scheduled for 1:37pm local time in Toronto.
Sugano is the only “rookie” scheduled to start a game this weekend, but we’ll get the first true glimpse at a number of players in their new environs. Among them are Max Fried with the Yankees, Charlie Morton with the Orioles, Nestor Cortes with the Brewers (in New York against his former Yankee teammates), Max Scherzer with the Blue Jays, Justin Verlander with the Giants, Jesus Luzardo with the Phillies and Walker Buehler with the Red Sox.
BREAKING: white sox sign former 2009 first round pick “Matt wonzalano” to a 3-year, 36 million dollar deal.
Russian: Not on Reinsdorf’s watch!
@avenger
He forced himself on the team.
I have Sugano on one fantasy team, interested to see how he does.
Day one was a disaster for relievers. How’d everyone do?
Really looking forward to seeing Sugano in game action. I’m betting that he is going to surprise a lot of people and exceed the fairly modest expectations most “experts” have for him this year. Dude actually knows how to pitch, rather than just throw, and I am guessing that Mike Elias and his staff have a plan on how to deploy his deep repetoire to get the most out of him.
Ditto. Happen to be going to that game Sunday while in Toronto couple days. Couple SPs who aren’t radar gun darlings.
I would not be surprised if having Sugano “do his thing” for the O’s this year will open some eyes to more people and remind them that starters can win without throwing 98 mph. If Greg Maddux should have taught us anything its that you can rely on pinpoint control and win a lot in this game. Not saying Sugano will become Maddux, but the book on them is similar in that control and accuracy are/were their keys to success on the mound.
The Dodgers won, but added Blake Snell to the list of 10 stupid contracts they already have.
It’s not impossible to win, but half your roster making stupid money makes it that much more difficult.
Snell pitched just fine. He’s less than 10% of their payroll. His $27m is just throw loose change to the Dodgers.
The Dodgers can afford to have Snell be Snell and spend 1/3 of his time on the IL during his contract. Most teams cannot.
Part of what had made the Dodgers so good is they avoid bad contracts. Who are these bad deals you speak of lmao. If Snell pitches anything like he did in the second half for the Padres and Giants this is a great deal
1) Tyler Glasnow
2) Michael Conorto
3) Tanner Scott
4) Max Muncy
5) Chris Taylor
6) Kirby Yates
7) Tommy Edman
8) Kike Hernandez
9) Miguel Rojas
10) Austin Barnes
And no, Blake Snell did NOT in any way pitch last night like he would be capable of being #11
lol…..
Glasnow..could be bad, too early to tell
Conforto is a one year contract
Muncy is underpaid
Taylor was bad, but this is the last year of that deal
Yates…one year deal
Edman – worth it, maybe a slight overpay
Kike – see October #s
Rojas – one year left at chump change
Barnes – see Rojas comment
How are these deals making it tough to win?
It has never been clear to me why some fans worry so much about player contracts. We know little to nothing about how much teams can afford to spend on salaries. Fretting about this on behalf of the Dodgers is stranger still, when it seems perfectly obvious that for them a $400M payroll is not a budget-buster, even with all the CBT obligations it creates. When this is all we really know, then why not just know it?
Also, nobody can ever say whether a player’s contract is an “under” or “over” pay until after the fact, and a lot of the time, not even then.
“It’s not impossible to win, but half your roster making stupid money makes it that much more difficult.”
They still have Yamamoto, Ohtani, Mookie (maybe), Freeman, etc. etc. but the roster construction gets sloppier and sloppier the further down the roster you go from legitimate MVP candidates.
Miguel Rojas is a psychopath in addition to being one of the worst INFs in baseball. Austin Barnes is arguably the worst Catcher on any active roster. Kike was worth that much once some 4 or 5 years ago. Edman is an overpay unless he gets back to 2022 production. Yates is an overpay. Taylor is an overpay. Muncy is overrated. Conforto and Glasnow are overpaid.
That is a LOT to have on one roster. For the third time (first in original comment, second at top of this comment), it’s not insurmountable, but it doesn’t make things easier.
I would gladly take Barnes over Maldonado.
As for Snell, he’s consistently shown he’s a slow starter but almost untouchable once May/June rolls around.
Not even a good attempt at trolling. Taylor is the actual only bad deal on the list. Half of those are one year deals. Muncy is literally every teams dream of a contract. Productive player that doesn’t ever get a commitment more than 2 years. I guess you’ve never watched Tommy Edman play in LA. He has done nothing but rake. I’ll take him on my team any day. Congrats on being on of two people in America that would take Eric Fedde over him, the other being John Mozeliak
The takeaway point here IMO is that all of these contracts were market rate when they were signed, including Taylor’s.
What happened to the Thursday chat?
White Sox looked great yesterday. Should be good enough to win between 60-65 games.
They looked good yesterday against the Angels. That isn’t the best barometer for how good a team actually will be. I hope for the few White Sox fans left that it is a harbinger of things to come, but I wouldn’t put much stock in a win over LAA.
Not meant to be an inflammatory question, but heading into season don’t Angels look like the 2nd worst team in AL regardless of its payroll being greater than quite a few clubs?
And there’s the thing, the two possible worst team’s in the league are playing each other thus mostly canceling each other out. If the White Sox sweep good for them, they need it after last season. If the Angels are swept start the countdown to Washington getting fired and Trout going home for the rest of the season
@Canuckleball
The last time I checked, the LAA were in the MLB so they’re playing similar talent. I’m not suggesting the ChiSox beat the Phillies or Dodgers but they still went out an competed. Considering everyone was saying they would lose more games this year than last year, it’s a good sign. Again, did I suggest they would be competitive or win 90+ games? No, but I think they did well for themselves yesterday.
Like cwsOverhaul mentioned above, the Angels are probably the second worst team in the league. Going .500 against them isn’t an indication that the Sox will better then last year.
The White Sox won the season series last year with the Angels 4-2.
Old York: It was just one game. I still see the Sox losing at least 120 games.
The Tigers won the Flaherty trade in fine fashion. Tigers made the playoffs without him. The chip, Thayron Liranzo is near the MLB threshhold, poised to have a fine career.
Oh, and Flaherty is back.
The Dodgers won that trade since they won the World Series. The Tigers can win it too, but Liranzo is just a prospect and is no guarantee.
I forgot the whole point of trades is just for prospects and not actually winning the World Series. The Tigers were one game away from the ALCS but hey didn’t need Flaherty right
The starters didn’t lose that series. They pitched great. I’m not anyone can say that Flaherty would have made a difference. The Tigers exceeded ALL expectations.
Trades are meant to improve your team. Fact is, Liranzo is the most beneficial chip in that trade. Dodgers got Flaherty for 15 starts. Detroit got a top notch prospect that they’ll have under club control until the 2030’s. I guess only time will tell, but the ceiling and expectations for Liranzo are really high.
It’s a win win trade. There is no scenario where the Dodgers ever lose the trade and that’s even if Thayron becomes a superstar. They don’t win a championship without Flaherty. Team barley had enough starters as is
The Tigers defense failed them and they quit hitting. Give credit to Cleveland as well.
Flaherty gets his World Series ring before the game tonight…would be nice irony to see him dominate the Dodgers and lead the Tigers to a win
He won’t get the ring before the game if he’s starting
Maybe. We will see how the presentation is handled this evening. Unfortunately, the Dodgers have released no information on when the ceremony will take place, which is truly annoying for those of us who will be there.
I take it back, You have to dig for the information, but the Dodgers have now announced that the ring presentation ceremony starts at 6:15.
Flaherty will have his ring handed to him followed by his ass handed to him.
Per LAT article Flaherty will be presented his ring pre-game tomorrow (Saturday).
Congratulations to Tyler O’Neill who is officially “Mr. Opening Day” after Homering on his 6th consecutive opening day setting a new MLB record. He got to do it in Toronto in his home country which had to make it that much more special.
Rsox, actually the record is eight, shared by Frank Robinson, Griffey Jr, Adam Dunn.Brooks Robinson has the Oriole record of 6. Still a special thing for Tyler to do in Canada with his family and friends there.
8 is total not consecutively
That was awesome to see. Never say never, but that record will never be broken.
RotiniRick: Of all the records in baseball, I find this one very doable.
Really? Seems improbable to me but planets could align and stuff. lol. I don’t know if anyone has a streak more than one right now.
So many take aways from yesterday’s games and none of them matter yet.
But its fun to finally start the season!
