Ever since the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman, there’s been an unanswered question about how he’ll fit onto the roster. The club already had Rafael Devers at third base and he seemed disinterested in moving anywhere else when discussing the matter last month. Devers spoke with the media again today with a slightly different tone, as relayed by reporters including Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic and Sean McAdam of MassLive.
Devers revealed that he has shared some thoughts with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Álex Cora, but didn’t go into detail about what he said in those conversations. “We spoke already, and I’m good to do whatever they want me to do,” said Devers through translator Daveson Perez. “I’m here to help. I’ve already spoken with them about that, and they know where I stand. I’m just ready to play.”
He was also asked how he would feel if he were the designated hitter on Opening Day, with Bregman at third. “Good,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s not my decision. I don’t call the shots around here. So I feel good. I’ll go out there and do what I need to do.”
There are a few elements making the situation awkward. Bregman is clearly the better defender, for one. For his career, Devers has tallies of -62 Defensive Runs Saved and -29 Outs Above Average at the hot corner. Bregman has +27 DRS and +22 OAA. Devers also battled soreness in both shoulders last year and spent most of the winter trying to build strength in those shoulders. He has been a bit behind schedule in terms of game action. He still hasn’t appeared in any official spring contests, just live batting practice and intrasquad games.
Devers tried to downplay the issue with his shoulders today. “I really don’t know why there’s been such a big deal made about my shoulders,” Devers said. “Since the first day here at camp, I’ve been saying that my shoulders are good, and that they’re good right now. So I don’t know why it’s been put out there, the rumors of my shoulders being bad, but they’re good right now.”
Though there are on-paper reasons to put Bregman at third, Devers has understandably been less than thrilled by the changes. Last month, he said that he was promised he could be a long-term third baseman when he signed his ten-year extension in January of 2023. But it was implied by Cora that the third base promise was made by previous CBO Chaim Bloom, who was later fired and now works for the Cardinals.
It had been speculated that the Sox could move Bregman to second base, where he has some limited experience, while having Devers at third. But Bregman has only been at the hot corner during spring, so moving him to the keystone doesn’t seem to be in the short-term plans. Perhaps that suggests Devers will be a primary designated hitter this year, though no firm declarations to that effect have been publicly made by any team personnel.
If Devers is the DH on something like an everyday basis, that would mean Masataka Yoshida would have to be in the outfield mix. It’s possible that Yoshida could start the season on the IL due to his own shoulder injury, though he may have to try to crack the outfield mix whenever he’s healthy.
As of now, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu project as the regular outfielders, though Abreu will start the season on the IL as he recovers from a gastrointestinal virus. Rob Refsnyder might get more playing time in the short term, or perhaps non-roster invitee Trayce Thompson. As the season goes along, prospects Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell might factor in, though Campbell could also take the second base job if Bregman isn’t in it. Guys like David Hamilton, Romy González, Nick Sogard or Vaughn Grissom could hold the keystone for the time being.
There are still many moving pieces and the arrangement on Opening Day might be very different from the way the club lines up throughout the year, depending on health and performance. But it will be a situation worth watching, both this year and down the road. Bregman can opt out of his contract after each year, so he might not be in Boston in 2026. However, Devers’ poor defense has often led to speculation about him moving to first base or DH at some point. If the Sox decide to move him off now, they may not want to move him back next year even if Bregman is gone.
For now, Devers has made his position clear to the club’s decision makers but has also accepted that the situation is out of his control. “I just want to help the team win,” he said today. “At the end of the day, whatever position I’m playing, I always take these things as a competition and as a way to get better. That’s how I see it, I’m ready to help the team win.”
Man he flipped quick
Sometimes when your feelings get hurt it just takes a while to process your emotions to then do the right thing. Classy move by Devers !
Yes…as a wise man once said… “check thyself before ye wreck thyself”.
@slowcurve, that the King James Version ?? lol
It’s a discussion Devers can’t win if he wants to win.
If I’m not mistaken, it’s from Act 4, Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice.
Big – Yeah let’s go with that ;O)
The classy move would not to have been an idiot in his comments before. This is a spanked child being compliant now that the spanking is over.
Pads – What was classy about ownership and management giving him a massive 3B contract just 2 years ago, promising him he’d stay at 3B for a long time, insisting all offseason that the team’s interest in Bregman was for 2B, and then not saying a word to him about him losing his 3B job until after he was confronted by reporters?
So you give ownership and management a free pass for lying to the guy, deceiving him, not being honest with their intentions, and overall handling the entire situation like crap. Well alrighty then.
I think some people here need to understand Devers said things that were inappropriate, but his being upset about how he was treated was well justified.
You don’t have to put 100% blame on just one side all the time, nor should you.
I mean, classy would have been not throwing the temper tantrum in the first place. This is just saving face.
There was no temper tantrum, that’s a total exaggeration.
ghost – Agreed, he handled it far milder than most would.
Guessing they told him Bregman is the 3B. If you want to pout and continue to not play in games, you can be suspended, and won’t receive your paycheck. No one will trade for your contract! We are stuck with each other.
“Classy” ??? Now that is funny.
Good point. Kind of like the 2017 Stros.
The team probably told him how things were going to work whether he likes it or not and I bet his agent talked to him about the blow back. It also was a terrible look when weeks later Harper said he was willing to play anywhere if it meant the Phillies would get to add a star.
I have a feeling this will be a LONG season for Mr Devers.
Cora told him to know his role and stop whining. He’s being paid well either way. First thing I’ll actually give Cora credit for.
First thing I’ll actually give Cora credit for.
======================
IMO, this is what managers get paid. Cora waited until Devers cooled off and then told him he can be the next Papi.
He was probably just speaking without thinking the first time and after a little thought realized exactly how childish he came across. It’s happened to everyone at some point. The difference is that his words were in front of the entire world instead of just in front of a spouse, friend, or co-worker.
@Hiflew
Did you notice the number of days between him announcing his displeasure, and finally accepting today? That’s a LOT of thought. Did you also notice he was not participate in games, even though his shoulders are fine?
Styme – it’s a lot of time… very possible Devers isn’t much of a thinker or requires a long time to form simple thoughts.
It’s also possible that he wasn’t asked again in that time and he didn’t feel the need to volunteer the information. Just because it took a while for him to publicly announce it doesn’t mean that it took that long for him to privately figure it out.
I have figured out that I was wrong in an argument with my spouse a lot earlier than I actually apologized at times. Doesn’t mean I didn’t know I was wrong, just means I wasn’t ready to admit I was wrong just yet.
even though his shoulders are fine?
=====================
You don’t know that his shoulders are fine. If he shows up for OD with two good shoulders, I’ll be very happy.
About time that fat loaf check his ego.
what about yours lol
At this point who knows if Devers will even be ready on opening day? He hasn’t gotten into a spring trading game yet. He says he’s healthy but we’ll see.
Er, spring training, not spring trading. Don’t want to start any trade rumors (wink).
I think he’s set to play in a sim game on Saturday, but the short answer is no.
Phy – The sim game would be tomorrow as the Red Sox are in Jupiter and there’s no other Red Sox SS MLB game, and he obviously didn’t want to make the cross-peninsula bus drive.
They are hoping he will play Saturday against the Braves, especially with ST ending in less than 2 weeks.
Maturity is realizing that the team is far better with Bregman than without. Good for Devers if he’s come around
Rsox – Read into it what you will. “It’s not my decision, they call the shots” translates to “They don’t want me at 3B and I can’t do anything about it”.
Let’s see how the season plays out. Wouldn’t surprise me if they end up trading him, his contract would be a bargain compared to what Vlad is demanding.
He’s not getting traded
Not many teams want a pure DH at all, let alone a DH with that many years and such a large dollar amount. Let’s be clear. Devers has been a pure DH his entire career. He has just been standing by third base instead of sitting in the dugout for years.
Who knows, maybe the slow walking his ST was also partly to give him time to cool off. There’s all these stories about his swing being a bit off and him working on things, but, reality could be they weren’t rushing to work too much with him till he accepted his role as what the team says it is.
@FPG
But its not like other teams will be willing to play him at 3B. His contract is untradeable, because he would not be happy anywhere he doesn’t play 3B.
I agree but if we’re being real here, the Mets and Dodgers payed way more for both of their DHs. They might not be DHs yet but they will be in a few years.
stymee – No player is untradeable, the Sox could eat a large portion of the contract or take on a bad contract in return or attach prospects.
And another team could view him as a possible 1B similar to Vlad’s transition.
“It’s been different,” Devers said. “For me, it’s been kind of sad that I’ve been put out there as someone bad for the organization or not about this organization. But I’ve matured a lot during this, and I’m ready to move forward.”
Good. People’s perspective can change. Perhaps having Bregman around did that. Devers doesn’t appear to particularly enjoy doing press and could use some PR coaching with some of his choice words. Nothing against the dude.
Yeah, it’s clear to me he doesn’t feel comfortable with the press and can be a little too casual about what he says. I don’t blame him for insisting on a translator and generally being a little press shy.
So many parallels between him and 24. How long before Devers being Devers is the new tagline?
Denvers will do what’s best for the team, and he’ll thrive as a DH. I’m not worried about this.
The starting rotation, on the other hand, is in a shambles. Just three weeks ago it looked so strong. Let’s hope they can stay steady long enough to get it back on track.
I would definitely be concerned if I’m the Red Sox. It immediately becomes a bad contract if he’s a DH for life. Highest paid DH in mlb history is not a good look long term on your roster
It was always a shame that the FO and Ortiz had to haggle over contracts every couple of years. I think Devers could perform as well as Papi in the role, and I’d be perfectly happy to see him paid like the star that Papi was.
papi was spiking his body with juice.thats why he played to 40 years old.not a hero at all.
Ortiz got better after drug testing started. Pretty good indication that he wasn’t juicing. Truly a great player. Why do you choose to be a hateful zero?
Haters gonna hate. Me, I have more fun as a lover.
@bcjd
Papi never got paid like Devers. To get paid like Papi, Devers would need to take quite the pay cut.
I wrote “paid like the star that Papi was,” not “paid like Papi was.”
Ortiz deserved more. He was a star.
Papi got paid 14m, 15m 16m and 16m his last 4 seasons.
If you count this season’s contracts, that was 9-13 years ago.
Wage inflation has been a ton over that past decade plus. I think accounting for wage inflation in MLB they’re probably more similarly paid than you think. Especially accounting for net present value with devers’ deferrals too
thats what i was thinking.what a waste.
Big – Not just that, fulltime DH isn’t for everyone.
Look at what happened when Jose Ramirez DH’d for 63 games the past couple years.
Ohtani is the highest paying dh in mlb history. Jury is out on if he will pitch again, much less effectively, after his 2nd tj.
@Jeremy320
Ohtani has been throwing light bullpens since the end of last season.
Ohtani will for sure move back to field too if he no longer pitches. He’s def fast and athletic enough for corner OF
Giancarlo Stanton has the worst contract for a DH.
They have solid depth and none of the injuries are particularly concerning. It’s fine for now. We are still better off than the Yankees
Hope you’re right. I think Crawford may be out for a while, and possibly Bello too. That really sucks. But hopefully it’s not that bad.
I’m glad he’s changing his tune, but still. Compare to a guy like Mookie Betts, who is ready and willing to switch positions without complaint if it fills a role and makes the team better. Reason number 281 why the Sox should never have traded him.
Let’s face it. Mookie is a rare unicorn.
Changing positions and going from having a position to having to DH are two different things. I’d be willing to bet if Dave Roberts told Mookie he was gonna do nothing but DH going forward Mookie would not be happy. A lot of players do not like to DH. Plus these guys have egos. If your team is telling you you are no longer good enough to bring a glove to the field I’m sure it stings, even if it might be true.
Mookie has skills on D.
Devers is limited on D.
No argument there, has nothing to do with my point. My point is there are a ton of players who would be unhappy about being forced into DH in their prime if there wasn’t an injury forcing it. Heck if the Mets tell Soto next year he’s gonna have to move to DH I’d bet everything I own he wouldn’t be happy and Soto isn’t a good defender. So it’s kinda dumb for fans to expect Devers to be fine with it.
Nice turnaround for Devers and over the course of a season these things tend to work themselves out.
Injuries usually sort out crowded situations but even if everybody is healthy Bregman can use a dozen or so games off his feet and Devers should be able to learn first base.
Now we’re talking! And the magic words are “…and I’m good to do whatever they want me to do.”
Yessiree – that’s the ticket.
Devers doesn’t sound THAT contrite with those statements. In the end, Bregman is the better 3b and Devers has $313.5 million reasons to shut up and play where he’s told to play.
Nobody is looking for an apology. He said what he said and is walking it back. Play ball!
Nobody is looking for an apology.
========================
YBC-The world is a much better place with an attitude like that.
@smelly1970
Oh, I imagine most Red Sox fans find it plenty contrite enough.
I guess he felt ashamed by his actions and he decided that in order to make the team better (And help himself and his team to a ring). I respect the consideration after further thought put into it.
If he had made the change earlier, he would’ve had a more smoother time transitioning to a different position, but he didn’t.
Rule makers had a little chat with Devers the rule taker about the Babbage principle.
So you all realize now… Bregman has key error in first game and costs Red Sox the game!!! It wouldn’t be a Red Sox season without drama!!! Play Ball!!!
He finally realized it’s not his decision. He was acting like he was the only player to ever be asked to switch positions.
hole – It’s not a position change, DH is not a position.
It’s a role change from infielder to DH only.
And no, nobody has gone directly from longtime fulltime 3B with zero professional experience at any other position to fulltime DH while still in their 20’s.
Look it up, all the established MLB 3B who ended up as a fulltime DH either platooned a while or tried another position like 1B before going fulltime DH.
Boston must’ve really enjoyed Pablo Sandoval
When are some of these guys going to speak English? Dude has been in the league for years and still uses an interpreter. That’s weak.
Ichiro used one throughout his entire 19 season career. Him and Ohtani can use conversational English. Same for a lot of Latin players. They choose to do interviews in their native tongues to stay connected with fans from the same heritage.
thank you YBC
We also live in a world where writers paid paid by the number hits they generate, and the RS writers being among the worst of them. One minor misstep in a second language will be headlines for your entire career.
That’s judgmental AF, Dodger Jr.
Do you realize how hard English is to learn as a second language with some of our grammar rules that make zero sense? Maybe the reporters can learn to speak a second language if they feel it’s that necessary to have a one on one conversation with the player.
Every one of us came from a family that immigrated to this country unless you are a true native which not many of us are. We are a huge melting pot with many of languages spoken throughout this country on a daily basis and have been that way for a long time.
Take a stroll through New York City and there is a good chance you might hear conversations being spoken in five or more languages or head on down to New Orleans and brush up on your French. I can only speak English and a little bit of Spanish but I’m not going to fault a man for being more comfortable speaking to reporters in his native tongue so he doesn’t have a slip up.
Do you realize how hard English is to learn as a second language
====================
Spanish is not that different than English. I’m wondering if Raffy lives in the DR in the off-season. If he were in the US fulltime, he’d probably becomes pretty good pretty fast.
But you live in a Spanish-speaking area half the year, it’s probably difficult to maintain your English skills.
The only reason hes suddenly ok with DH & not 3b is bc his shoulders are messed up & hes not 100% healthy. He has no leverage. If he wants to be in lineup opening day its only as DH. If he gets healthier maybe they’ll let him play 3b again but until then he has no choice, his body made the decision very easy. Maybe not playing defense will help his recovery & he can hit 35-40 bombs. end of last yr when both shoulders were aching he couldnt hit his way out of a paper bag
Why would Bloom ever make such a ridiculous promise? Good on Devers for coming around takes a second for the emotions to cool.
Are you Sure Bloom made that promise?
cora admitted that bloom made that promise
Cora said Bloom made that promise it’s different than admitted.
Sox have built a deep roster , deep farm, y’all still hating on Breslow or has he earned some respect in Sox circles?
Breslow is doing well. Trolls will troll.
Still using an interpreter? Pretty lame in his 9th season!
Why is the that lame? The second he says something that he didn’t mean because it got lost in translation the idiots in this country will jump all over him. I don’t blame him or any other player for continuing to use one.
Been in this country and can’t understand English? Pathetic!
Ghost – 100% Agree. My mother-in-law was here 50 years and preferred her native language. It is people who are not forced to use a second language that complain.
Have they even tried him at 1B? Did I miss that? That might work and then you can trade Casas for some more pitching! Unfortunately Seattle won’t be parting with anything now that they’ve got injury issues there also…
Have you seen how Devers fails to pick sharp grounders up. Now think about how hard throws come from short or 3B and how often those throws are in the dirt? Devers would lose some weight running after throws in the dirt that he missed. Oh look another infield hit turned into a double because he can’t get his glove down to the dirt in time and then runs after the ball. You would need the fastest catcher in baseball to back him up on every throw. I’ve been a Red Sox fan since my first game in 1968, I’m not throwing shade for the sake of it.
Boston has already decided Devers won’t be their long-term third baseman, but they are too short-sighted to manage his trade value properly.
Can definitely understand his position. If the team promised him 3b to get him to sign then switch it up on him, I’d be annoyed too. Doesn’t matter if it was the previous GM, he was representing the team. Previous GM offered the contract too, is the contract now void because he’s working elsewhere? Only issue is if the contract doesn’t actually say he plays 3b. However it seems like the team is acknowledging that they did make that promise and are trying to renege on it but the press is making him out to be the bad guy so I can understand his frustration.
Nobody in their right mind was going to offer Devers good money to be a starting 3B. He’s a bat, and that’s it. Ever since prospect days that’s been the story with him.
His bat was hidden briefly under his first head of baseball ops who got fired for many reasonsnwe truely dont know… then an absolutely inept head of ops took over who made so many questionable decisions, keeping Devers at 3b isn’t even in the top 5 or even 10 head scratchers.
Breslow had one season, got some money to spend, an opportunity to fix the egregious situation, and appears to have done it
Breslow traded for Vaughn Grissom. He gave up Sale. He signed Giolito.
He was left an incredibly talented farm system from Bloom. He used that and his first round pick to get Crochet.
Bloom wasn’t the best but I wouldn’t say Breslow is “the guy” just yet. Bloom didn’t leave him a bare cupboard.
It’s way too early for any GM. I think you need 5-10 years to see how the farm works out.
Devers is very poor at 3B….
He should go 1B or DH.
If Devers is DH, where does Yoshida go? Another dilemma.
Personally I think those things have a way of working themselves out with injuries, off days, etc and such. And for starters, Yoshida isn’t even ready to play yet.
I mean if bregman takes some days off, Devers plays some 3b, some 1b, Yoshida gets trotted into lf which they’ve hinted is the plan…
I think I read anthony lost 12 pounds with that flu in the clubhouse. That’s going to set him back some. And abreu has issues of his own to not be ready for opening day. Then you’ll have the in season times guys are banged up or need rest…
They work out? Have you seen the Sox the past two years? They’ve been positional nightmares in many ways
IMO, people are way over-analyzing this. What Yoshida amounts to is an extremely good, extremely expensive bench piece.
Which is reason we need to trade Yoshida
9 years/$281.7M left or whatever- I know his contract is structured with a bonus and deferments etc. so net / present / raw value etc. etc. bottom line is with 9 years left on a top dollar contract and they signed someone to replace you at your position and made you the DH…
A lot of these mega contract players are often immediately discussed within a year or two of their deal being signed that “they’ll eventually move to first base/primarily DH” but it usually takes at least 4 or 5 years, if not into the second half of the contract- but to start that process a year into the deal…
Is he even trade-able?
I don’t know how to feel about this…. Although I will say I have known very highly paid people with cushy jobs whose roles were changed/scaled back as the ethos/approach changed through no fault of their own and they get frustrated, the money aside- at some point it becomes about pride and a sense of purpose and appreciated value and not just the money.
And I get it- I think everybody has been in a situation where they had it good at the most basic level and there were aspects of the situation that were incredibly frustrating, disappointing, disheartening, etc. despite the undeniable benefits/upside, etc.
But again- who would trade for Devers if he’s just a DH now and he’s already kinda dropping off and he’s only 28- and I am one of those folks who rolls his eyes as hard as possible at the people who treat any player over 27 as Bernie of Weekend At Bernie’s who isn’t aware that the vibrations are making them dance, but they are themselves already “shuffled” off this mortal coil… or in this case, a player’s prime productivity years… which, I think, Devers has already passed.
I like to worry about contracts, especially RS contracts. But this one is not one that concerns me. He has very similar numbers as Vlad, and next year someone will likely be paying Vlad $500M.
I mean, Vlad Jr’s. eventual contract is destined to be one of if not the greatest albatrosses of all time.
He’s gonna be the half billion dollar version of Prince Fielder or Carl Crawford, etc. etc. I just don’t think it’s gonna pan out.
I do think he has a few good years left in him, but at most I’d sign Vald, Jr. to like 7 years, take him through his Age 34 season- so that’d be, what, 7 years/$304.5M or something? Maybe 8 years/$350M with that last year considered ‘tacked on’ to get the deal made?
But anybody who’s willing to pay him an AAV over $40M across more than 7 or 8 years is going to have a real problem/sunk cost/ dead money, etc. on their hands for another 6 to 8 years of paying Vlad $40M to $50M per season to ride the bench, play but be of no value, or be medically retired in some fashion, maybe just permanently on the IL and quietly replaced and never mentioned, like Ellsbury or something.
If Bloom liked him trade himSt.Loius 3b guy is better defensively than Bergman but get Devers out if he has an attitude with that kind of money in Trumps recession. Be thankful !
Gently offered: it should be uninterested in first graph, not disinterested.
Health and performance probably just clarify the picture in the end. But when the roster is healthy, it seems to me their lineup is better with Bregman at 2B. And while Devers isn’t a good defender at 3B, if the other dominoes put Rafaela at 2B or Yoshida in the OF, that feels like you’d lose any defensive advantage of putting Bregman at 3B over Devers. Campbell’s readiness to hit the ground running feels like a determining factor here because if it’s not him at 2B, who is it that you feel is giving you more value than being able to DH Yoshida?
Also, Ohtani gave himself the conditional opt out tied to Friedman. Presumably this was about the assurances about usage he could hold Friedman accountable to. Maybe this Devers situation also leads to more contracts with that type of conditional opt out clause.
Raffy has the heart of a Lion. No one can throw shade on him for fighting to do what he loves to do. What he wants to do. I’d be concerned if he didn’t. Find a man who doesn’t care and you’ll find a man who once cared too much. Now, it’s just time to let them coach and let them lie in the bed they make and see what they lose without the lion on the field. Sometimes the heart needs to be there and not underneath in a batting cage. Let them figure that out. They will find a way to make it work because they have to in order to win. They need both of them.
