Tigers center fielder Parker Meadows won’t be ready by Opening Day, manager A.J. Hinch tells Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Meadows has been having issues with the musculocutaneous nerve in his upper right arm, which the club can’t seem to activate at the moment.
It seems to be a frustrating situation with little clarity. Hinch said earlier this week that they are trying to “wake it up,” referring to the nerve in Meadows’ arm. In the meantime, Meadows can do some things but can’t throw. He can take some swings, but with just one hand. Once his nerve is awoken, he’ll need to take some at-bats and get back into game shape.
With Matt Vierling set to start the season on the injured list due to a rotator cuff strain, the Tigers will be down two outfielders to start the year. Wenceel Pérez would be a logical fill-in with Meadows on the shelf but he has his own issue. Pérez has been dealing with some back tightness lately. The club announced today, per Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group, that Pérez received a cortisone injection to address his lingering discomfort. The club still believes Pérez will be ready by Opening Day, per Chris McCosky of Detroit News, but it’s clearly not ideal for so many injuries to be occurring simultaneously.
If Pérez is able to take over in center, he will be flanked by Riley Greene on one side. Kerry Carpenter could perhaps be in the other corner. Carpenter once projected as the regular designated hitter but him taking the outfield more regularly could perhaps open more playing time for Spencer Torkelson, who is having a great spring. The Tigers signed Gleyber Torres to man second base and then bumped Colt Keith to first, squeezing out Tork. But he’s hit four homers in 12 games and could perhaps find himself taking some of those DH at-bats.
Since Pérez is sort of a touch-and-go situation, the club will have to think about backup plans for center field. Greene could perhaps be an option there, with someone like Justyn-Henry Malloy stepping into a corner. They also have utility guys Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibáñez on the roster.
There’s also one other creative solution that is getting some consideration. Hinch tells Jason Beck of MLB.com that he is thinking about getting Javier Báez some action in center. “I’m flirting with the idea of putting Javy out there and getting him a few reps,” Hinch said, “just in case something happens during the season where we end up with that need.”
Báez has just 4 2/3 innings of outfield experience in his big league career, with all of that coming in the corners. He has primarily been a shortstop in his career but his offense has fallen off a cliff in three straight years. Trey Sweeney showed some potential at shortstop last year while Báez was out recovering from hip surgery. Perhaps there’s a scenario where Sweeney takes over the shortstop job for the long term and push Báez into something of a super utility role.
As mentioned, Báez has primarily been a shortstop in his career. But he also has over 2,000 innings at second base, more than 600 frames at third, and brief showings at first and in the outfield corners. Adding center field to his repertoire would make him capable of playing anywhere except the battery. The Tigers are surely hoping their outfield can get healthy enough that they don’t have to consider such a scenario, but there’s no real harm in having it available to them.
Petzold suggests an external addition could be considered if the injuries linger. There aren’t many notable free agents on the market right now but the end of spring always leads to a few players getting cut from other clubs. Players like Kevin Pillar, Trayce Thompson and Travis Jankowski are currently in camp with other clubs as non-roster invitees. A few such players will end up back on the market soon if they don’t get roster spots on their current minor league deals.
Meadows nerves are getting on mine
Jahmai Jones is having a great spring and he certainly is an option if both Vierling and Meadows are out. He can play CF and has looked good in the field and at the plate.
Agree. That’s why they signed JJones – emergency OF. This is pretty much an emergency. I wouldn’t rush Perez either. I also don’t think Kerry is that bad in RF and I’m in favor of giving him a lot more ABs against LH’ers. I think he can handle it. Better yet, HE thinks he can handle it.
Riley in LF, JJones in CF & Carp in RF; Tork at DH.
That IMO is the best possible combination at the moment.
Meadows’ situation is concerning. Is this career-threatening? They don’t seem to know much about it. My dreams of a future 3-CF OF (Riley, Meadows & Max) is in jeopardy.

Sounds highly treatable. It may take him some time to build back up once he regains strength.
Treatable, yes. But recovery time may be very long. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8241242/#:~:text=…
@Bronxlou I read that one first. YMMV on recovery time.
Not sure an all lefty outfield is a good thing.
It’s too bad Kreidler can’t hit worth a crap. He’s excellent defensively at SS and CF.
If only he could HIT like Mickey Stanley!
2 knocks tonight
Make that 1 knock
I saw that. I watched the tape of the game and Kreidler absolutely bombed one right after I said he couldn’t hit worth a crap. lol.
I would love to see him hit well enough to make the Bigs. I’ve always pulled for him. He’s had some bad breaks with untimely injuries. AJ’s talked him up some recently. He sees the ease with which Kreids plays defense.
Couldn’t agree more, doc. I was shocked to not see his name in the article. It’s been fun following him this spring.
July
“but the end of spring always leads to a few players getting cut from other clubs…..”
Sure, sounds like a plan…after 11 years of rebuild…sounds absolutely fridgedair awesome! Golly gee, I can’t wait to see who will be playing Centerfield, put me in coach!
Shoulda’ hired the Superfife!
Coulda’ had a V-8!
Put me in first class….
Yes. By all means. Let’s get the guys cut after spring training…..
You missed the part where it is to fill in for a few games; not to be the starting CF the next decade.
You missed the part about 11 years…..
They made the playoffs last year and have a better team this year with more depth. Life is good.
Will Hunter Meadows do anything to help out his brother?
Say what?
* Austin
Ok… how do you suppose Austin can help wake up his brother’s dormant nerve?
He can’t even help himself
Jahmai Jones is having an awesome Spring. He will for sure make the squad. But once he starts hitting against actual MLB pitchers is my worry. Tork is killing it as well, so him being the everyday DH would be ideal, atleast till Vierling and Meadows are back. But picking up a NRI cast off is not the solution to the injury problem. Starting to sound like the Lions injury woes followed the Tigers to Lakeland! Hopefully they leave it there when they head north!
Malloy is having a good spring so far too. He’s an option for at bats as well.
Yikes, 2-9 months recovery range for those that recover. This also
has the potential to end a promising Tiger career just as unexpectedly and as suddenly as did his brother’s (for a different unexpected and sudden cause).
I know these things because I’m pretty much a doctor now after Googling this rare thing and then thinking about it.
Malloy didn’t help himself with his OF play. Wasn’t major, but he threw to the wrong base, allowing the hitter to advance to 2B, and ultimately scored.
Wish we could merge Jay-Hen’s offense with Kreidler’s defense.
Tigers best move would be to trade for Luis Robert. He’s essentially on a 3-yr, $55 mil deal. Tigers have tons of depth to offer. There’s just too much uncertainty in both of these injuries to go into the season with a shoddy OF. This is the prime of Skubal’s career, they’re stacked with pitching, they need a big bat/capable CF so they don’t blow the season in the early stages.
I doubt the WSX are dealing Robert unless there is a premium haul coming there way.
Something like one of Max Clark/McGonigle, Jace Jung and Liranzo
I’m absolutely certain the White Sox would be willing to deal Robert… they can finish in last place with or without him and they know it, it would take a compelling deal. Zero chance the Tigers are trading Clark or Jobe. Anyone else, however, seems like they could be a possibility..
The Tigers are going to keep Baez and I would also keep Sweeney make Sweeney the most days SS and use Baez backing up 2/3/ss and right now I would have getting reps in CF as much as I could on the backfields. He should still have the athletic ability to hold it.
Jones is a great feel good story, but I don’t think he is going to hit much in the majors.
If Perez can’t go….Then I move Greene to CF (and use Baez to give a blow every now and then) put Malloy in LF and Carpenter in RF. McKinstry can play some corner OF too. And Tork at DH.
I hope he gets well soon. This is a big year for a lot of Tiger players. Once again, the field is full and yet no roaring, stand out candidates to replace him. I like the idea of doing something different like a crazy trade as rumored above. The Tigers do have plenty of men. Those are the guys that are supposed to have that big year…..this year.
Get well soon!
Detroit has so many guys that can fill in it’s not even funny. They are primarily a platoon team. Mix and match is ho2 they roll. Third base might be the bigger issue to me. Can Jung hit enough ? Can Keith play there if Tork starts off hot ?
They have guys that want to play, and they’ll play anywhere to play. The team impressed everyone last year, and we think they’ll be even better this year. They are fun to watch, GO TIGERS !!!
Well, as that great Philosopher Rosanne-Rossanna-Danna used to say, “It’s always something” !!!
Shake and pace, apparently. Gotta be something like that for him to say screw a ML career when he was a 26 year old AllStar
As someone who has lived a happy and successful life living with General Anixity Order, I fight it daily. I’ve walked in Austin’s shoes, and believe me, you never want to go there. Living with anxiety and panic attacks is hugely debilitating, and I am not a professional athlete. Imagine the pressure that Austin is feeling coming to bat with 30,000 fans yelling your name. You do not want to fail them, yet your head is in a negative space. Your heart races, and your lack of sleep hinders your ability to focus on pitches. Harriston and dsett75, you should be ashamed of your insensitivity. My late mother, a Tigers fan until the day she died, who attended her first Tigers game on Ladies Day, 1937, would be appalled by your comments.
The Tigers should be treating Báez like the Red Sox treated Rusney Castillo or the Angels with Anthony Rendon: a contract to be absorbed, not a player to be force-fitted into new roles. Cutting him outright might not be palatable, but forcing him into center field suggests the team is prioritizing sunk costs over optimal roster decisions.
Tigers will be safe without Meadows, or Verling, if they miss less than a month it will help some borderline players establish themselves as potential reserves while they’re recovering. 162 games is a long time and they should be able to compensate for a few weeks of them missing games
