The Padres and free agent infielder Jose Iglesias are reportedly in agreement on a minor league contract. The Boras Corporation client will earn a $3MM base salary if he makes the roster and can take home another $1MM via incentives. That’s a bit heavier base than the standard minor league pact, which seems reflective of Iglesias’ 2024 season and perhaps strong interest on non-guaranteed deals of this nature.
Iglesias, 35, enjoyed a tremendous comeback season in 2024 after not appearing in the majors at all in 2023. (He spent a portion of that season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate.) Originally signed to a minor league deal by the Mets, Iglesias was summoned to the big leagues in late May as a scuffling Mets club shuffled up a roster that had produced a 24-33 record through the season’s first two months. The 12-year veteran went on to appear in 85 games and slash .337/.381/.448 in 291 turns at the plate. He also became a key figure in the Mets’ clubhouse and a fan favorite whose “OMG” song became an anthem for the Mets as they turned their season around and marched to an NLCS appearance that looked wildly improbable at the time of Iglesias’ call to the majors.
Impressive as Iglesias’ numbers were in 2024, the Mets haven’t been keen on bringing him back. That’s in part due to a largely inflexible roster; catcher Francisco Alvarez and likely backup infielder Luisangel Acuña are the only two projected position players on the Mets’ roster who can be optioned. Re-signing Iglesias would’ve effectively left the Mets with a static 13-player position core, as Alvarez isn’t likely to be optioned at any point in the near future. That would leave the Mets playing with a short bench anytime a position player needed a couple days off with a minor injury or illness.
Furthermore, there’s simply good reason to believe that Iglesias’ output was unsustainable. He benefited from a sky-high .382 average on balls in play that sat 72 points higher than his career mark entering the 2024 season. That surge in batted-ball results came despite Iglesias producing bottom-of-the-scale marks in terms of average exit velocity (85.8 mph), barrel rate (2.2%) and hard-hit rate (30.6%). The Mets — and presumably, based on his eventual contract — other clubs around the league clearly didn’t expect him to replicate or even approximate his 2024 results.
While some regression is to be expected, that shouldn’t take away the entirety of what Iglesias did with the Mets. He continued to demonstrate superlative contact skills, fanning in only 12.4% of his plate appearances. He’s also retained plus sprint speed even as he’s entered his mid-30s, clocking in at 28.6 ft/sec, per Statcast, and landing in the 83rd percentile of big leaguers as a result. Iglesias also played strong defense at both third base and second base, per Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average. He’s not going to be the batting title contender that a cursory look at his 2024 line might suggest, but even a dip to his “expected” .314 weighted on-base average (via Statcast) would make him a useful utility infielder.
That could well be Iglesias’ role with the Padres, but it’s possible he emerges in a more significant capacity. San Diego presently expects to have Jake Cronenworth at second base and Luis Arraez at first base. If the Friars want to affordably bolster their infield defense, however, shifting Arraez to a DH role and moving Cronenworth back to first base could open second for Iglesias.
It’s also possible that he’s only in the mix for a bench spot, which would place him in something of an unofficial competition with infielders Eguy Rosario and Tyler Wade. Rosario is out of minor league options — one of the more intriguing out-of-options players in the league this spring — whereas Wade can’t be sent down without his consent due to his status as a veteran with more than five years of MLB service. The Padres aren’t going to carry all three on the roster. Iglesias could beat out either player, given his ability to handle any infield spot other than first base. Rosario isn’t yet arbitration-eligible and is thus earning roughly the league minimum. Wade’s $850K salary is barely north of the minimum. He has a $1MM club option, however, suggesting the Friars would prefer to keep him around.
Iglesias is an Article XX(b) free agent — meaning he’s a free agent with more than six years of MLB service who finished the preceding season on a major league roster or injured list. The 2022-26 CBA stipulates that such free agents who sign minor league contracts have three uniform opt-out opportunities baked into the contract: the first being five days prior to Opening Day, the second on May 1 and the third on June 1. As such, if Iglesias is informed late in camp that the Padres don’t plan to carry him on the Opening Day roster, he can trigger that out clause and explore opportunities with other clubs.
Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the agreement between Iglesias and the Padres. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported it was a minor league deal and also was first on the terms of the contract.
Good‼️
I don’t think it’s an accident he goes from team to team every year. Fans viewed him as a positive unifying story on the Mets last year, but reports indicate teams aren’t happy on the inside about his antics.
What reports
TPS reports. Don’t feel bad, no one reads them
If people would put the new cover sheets on the TPS reports the people that need to read them would.
I’m not sure what Lord is referring to but Iglasias was amazing in 21 when the Sox got him in September due to injuries. They don’t make the playoffs without him. Instead of taking his money and running, he became a dugout cheerleader even though he couldn’t be added to the roster.
Dewey, Joel Sherman has reported on this but has also said everyone he’s spoken to with the Mets said he was a great teammate this past season.
He’s got a temper. It is why Boston shipped to Detroit, and again why Detroit let him walk in free agency. It might have changed, and he’s not so hot headed, but when he was younger, he was.
youtube.com/watch?v=Fy3rjQGc6lA
“great teammate”…I’ve no reason to think he’s anything but a good teammate, but I don’t read too much into the “good teammate” or “bad teammate” narrative.
American Hollywood media is so biased, one sided and rife with conflicts of interest, that “good teammate” oftens means that he’s been cooperative with that particular reporter, gives inside info and he or she likes that particular player.
“Bad teammate” far too often means uncooperative with reporters and didn’t give them the scoop or the face time they wanted.
BS. He would’ve been brought back to the Mets, but he’s out of options. There are zero reports ever where Iglesias has been accused of “antics.”
“zero reports ever”…eek, be careful there, hoss. There are actually plenty of reports “ever”. Ask James McCann his thoughts? Or any of the Tigers fans who put up with his attitude? I do not doubt the ’24 mets players loved him, and it may be he has grown up. But best to avoid such superlatives.
vintagedetroit.com/iglesias-never-seemed-intereste…
His nickname is Candelita or Firecracker because of his fiery temper. He has been accused of taking plays or whole games off on defense his entire career and that tendency has angered his teammates on multiple teams from Boston to Detroit to Cincinnati and there were issues on each team.
Since I first met him in 2023 he seems to be a great guy to be around in camp. Obviously, as a fan I only get to see him joking around with his teammates on the practice fields and in the dugout. We are not in the clubhouse. Like Profar who was very intense early in his career, Iglesias seems to have mellowed as he grew older and become one of those fun and funny guys that players like to be around.
Maybe I am totally off base, but the Padres have been very focused on culture and camaraderie on the team since Shildt was hired and if Iglesias was a bad apple, I doubt Shildt and Preller would want him on the team.
Reports in your own mind?
OMG!
This is the reply I came to see.
Charlie – I prefer the GNR version.

Padres making their moves! Errr, sorry, move. Ahahahahahaha!
Thanks again Yankees!!!
Good player, the Yankees hit the snooze button here. They should of kept him from ever leaving New York.
More Shortstops for the Shortstop God
Love this signing
Great move. Clutch last year to say the least.
Nice! Padres got the best remaining value bat in the market.
How did the guy not get a major league deal!
“Not get a major League”…Scott Boras insists he was worth 3/$45M and this is what happens when you badly miscalculate and think that your agent sets the market.
Probably gets on once they figure out their roster moves.
He’s just a dcent backup IFer who had an incredibly lucky 2024. Knock 70 points off his BA and OBP, and pro rate his SLG to normalize his slash line for luck and his .337/.381/.448 becomes something like 265/310/358 with flashy defense that’s a respectably above average by Statcast without being top-notch. He’s also 35 now, and decline after 31 is notorious for accelerating.
He’s also .100 points of OPS worse, career, against RHP’ing.
He’ll probably make some great-looking plays for you, though.
Next free agent contest I’m just picking every SS to sign with San Diego
How do you think I win it every year? Lol
I’m surprised he went back there. Last time he signed a minor league deal with San Diego, they kept him at AAA the entire season.
In this case, he almost assuredly has an opt out if he doesn’t make the team. He’ll make the team.
He’s an Article XX(b) free agent. (Six years service, finished preceding season on a major league roster)
By definition, he’ll have three uniform opt-outs in his minor league contract: five days prior to Opening Day, May 1 and June 1.
Looks like a mistake by both New York teams. The Yankees need a 3B. Cashman better hope Cabrera or Peraza are ready.
Would’ve been smart for the Yankees. All the Met fans want him back.
How is this a Mets mistake
In 2023 Iglesias played just 28 games for Padres in the minors according to the article.
Jimmy, in 2023 after opting out of a minor league deal with the Marlins, Iglesias signed a minor league deal with the Padres at the end of April. He played just 28 games in El Paso and then opted out. No other team would sign him and he missed the rest of the season. The Padres didn’t keep him there.
Apparently, last year’s NL MVP according to Nick Castellanos, isn’t even valuable enough to get a major league contract.
Nice to see Fluffy return home!
Close, that’s Gabriel Iglesias lol
Good depth signing.
Granted, he just turned 35, but having to settle for a minor league deal is kind of shocking. .337/.381/.448 batting line last season in 85 games, 137 OPS+, 3.1 WAR, still has a great glove defensively. Still, this comes off as one of those minor league deals with a guaranteed handshake roster spot, they’re just doing this for roster flexibility right now.
Shows how broke everyone is except NY, LA, and Phili
“Shows how broke everyone is”…You mean it shows how middle market players should NEVER sign with Scott Boras and how badly things go when you(and your agent) badly miscalculate your market.
Iglesias has signed 4 minor league deals in 3 years with 3 different agents. He is a borderline MLB player. No one miscalculated his market. He is just not very good and at 35 he is old.
If owners are losing money, why aren’t they selling their franchises?
@El Owning
Because they make it back when they sell the team. Unfortunately, most teams have a budget year to year. If they overspend, or become White Soxish, and attendance drops, they may take a loss.
The White Sox are in a major market. No pity for a situation their ownership/management created.
What it shows is that FA is like musical chairs and when the music stops everybody scrambles for a chair…Iglesias wants to play and was willing to sign a MiL deal for the chance while some other guys refuse to lower their money / years demands….Brandon Belt last year, Anthony Rizzo and Adam Duval this year. I would expect Iglesias to be up at some point and some of it depends on what happens with Wade, Rosario, Brosseau, Sheets and McCoy
What it really shows is ANOTHER Boras failure. This has been the worst offseason for Boras clients that I can recall. Anyone could have gotten Soto his $$, but there are a number of guys that should strongly consider leaving the Boras agency. I’m looking at you, Pete Alonso.
Pete Alonso only wanted to play for the Mets. He has said so since signing. It’s hard to get your client at big contract when they will only consider one team. No leverage. Boras didn’t fail at all. He got Alonso the best possible deal with the one and only team he would sign with.
I see you Scott
Alonso may have said that after signing, but while a FA, Boras couldn’t drum up demand from another team.
@BobinTexas
That wasn’t Boras’ doing.
Boras wasn’t Alonso’s rep when the latter foolishly rejected Eppler=Cohen’s ridiculous 7/158m extension offer during the 2023 season.
It wasn’t Boras who went into negotiations during the 2024-2025 offseason wanting more than that offer—it was Alonso who was instructing his agent to aim higher.
Since you and your alter ego mlb fan are parroting the same message, I will cut and paste my answer to him as part of this post.
Iglesias has signed 4 minor league deals in 3 years with 3 different agents. He is a borderline MLB player. No one miscalculated his market. He is just not very good and at 35 he is old.
It is not a failure on Boras’ part. Alonso would only negotiate with one team, He had no intention of signing anywhere else. No agent could have gotten Alonso a better contract because the Mets were the only team he would sign with. Period.
Your irrational hatred of Boras is causing you to make really stupid statements.
This is his 4th straight minor league deal and 3rd straight season. In 2023 he signed two of them. 1st with the Marlins. He could not crack their MLB roster so he opted out and then signed a minor league deal with the Padres in late-April. After he couldn’t crack the Padres roster he opted out in late May and no other team signed him at all that year. Then he signed a minor league deal with the Mets last season and was called up in May.
Its not a shock that he couldn’t get a MLB deal this offseason. No one believes he can repeat his 2024 performance.
There is no guarantee that he can crack the Padres roster even as a backup. If Rosario can pull his head out and stop striking out so much, Iglesias will not be a Padre in 2025.
What an awful signing. A waste of money and a player other players grow to hate quite quickly since he is all about himself.
Proof?
Its a minor league deal.
Yanks made a mistake not grabbing him.
I thought the same thing at first. But if you think about it with the tax it would likely cost the Yanks like $7mm to sign him. I think Cabrera is overexposed as a starting player, but I’m not sure Iglesias is $7mm better than him.
Donnie Barrels replacement……
I remember when Padres fans were falling over themselves trying to trade Travis Jankowski for this guy. Instead they get him for a minor league deal and a spring training invite 🙂
They probably should have traded Jankowski at that point. Just not for Iglesias specifically.
Welcome back Hoser! Go Pads
He’s going to be playing quality defense and making more hit songs, now as a Padre!
How often does a player with 12 seasons in MLB, coming of his very best season, only get a minor league deal? I wonder if that has ever happened before.
“”Ever happened before”…Without looking I can guarantee that it’s happened before. This is an example of $iss poor, ill advised agency representation.
What this shows is that you cannot market middle market players the same as top of market players. Scott Boras learned an important lesson today, while Jose Iglesias pays the price for said lesson.
Iglesias is not a middle of the market player. This is his third straight minor league deal. He is a bottom of the market player that just happened to have a magical 2024 after being signed to a minor league deal and being called up in May. The previous year he never made it out of the minors. The 2 years before that he had a combined 0.5 WAR. Iglesias has not ever been a middle market player.
Best, its his 4th straight minor league deal in 3 seasons. He signed 2 minor league contracts in 2023. One with the Marlins that he opted out of on April 20th and then with the Padres on April 25 that he opted out of one month later. After that no team would sign him at all in 2023.
You can guarantee you’ll get a nice T bone by looking up a butchers ass but wouldn’t you rather take his word for it?
Boras doesn’t have time for his lesser clients. They have to wait til last.
“Wait till last”…Boras doesn’t care about his lesser clients. They’re not going to line his pockets so he just gambles and plays Russian roulette with their free agency.
If he wins he gets a few more bucks in his pocket. If he doesn’t, he feels it’s no great loss because that client is clearly no Juan Soto.
This is his third straight minor league deal. I don’t think he played in the majors at all in 2023.
It’s almost as if :luck is an alien concept to you lot.
What about it don’t you understand?
I think we all know his numbers last year are pretty unsustainable, but there is really no reason to believe he can’t hit .280 with an OPS around the.690-.715 mark (as he has for most of his career.) with solid defense at a middle infield spot. Nothing amazing, but it does certainly have some value. That being said, I’m surprised he couldn’t find a guaranteed deal somewhere. I’m sure Scott Boras being his agent doesn’t help because there are some teams that just won’t sign Boras clients. Personally, I would much rather have Iglesias over someone like Amed Rosario, Taylor Walls, Nick Madrigal or Orlando Arcia.
His professionalism is sustainable, kinda like Jesse Chavez.
Mets MVP last Season. I always liked him. He was clutch with great instincts. Really bad karma for the Mets not bringing him back. Best of Luck OMG.
“Mets MVP”…Iglesias had a higher W.A.R than most of the team outside of Lindor and maybe Vientos.
How even an average agent couldn’t parlay that into 2/$14M or at worst a 1/$8M is criminal.
Waiting this long(teams already exhausted their budgets)to sign is the worst case of agency malpractice I’ve ever seen
He brought tremendous intangibles to the Mets last Season.
They were the bad news Mets until he arrived on the scene.
Since you and your 2 alter ego accounts keep parroting the same garbage, I am going to cut and paste my response to you.
Iglesias has signed 4 minor league deals in 3 years with 3 different agents. He is a borderline MLB player. No one miscalculated his market. He is just not very good and at 35 he is old.
It is not a failure on Boras’ part. His last two agents, one each in 2023 and 2024, also were only able to get him minor league deals. He didn’t even PLAY in the majors in 2023 because he was not a good player. He couldn’t even crack the MARLINS roster.
Your irrational hatred of Boras is causing you to make really stupid statements.
Wow his market has been really terrible that he didn’t even get a guaranteed mlb deal after a 137 wrc+ season.
But of course he is 35, his defense is declining and he doesn’t hit the ball very hard. Still a good chance that he makes the roster the padres lineup is pretty bad after the top4-5 guys and they don’t have depth
I don’t think you see him in SD unless there’s a Bogaerts injury or Rosario/Joe really underwhelms. TBH, I’d prefer Iglesias over Joe right now — the team can rotate Cronenworth/Arraez/Iglesias/Rosario between 2B/1B/LF/DH. It all depends if Rosario can play a passable LF, IMO.
Just for fun (since I’m thinking of it), I’m guessing LF/C/DH/bench goes as Hayward, Joe, Campusano, Diaz, Wade, Rosario, and Ornelas, with Iglesias coming up by 5/1 to replace Joe, Ornelas, or Wade. I initially overlooked Wade; the Padres have a 2026 club option, but it’s only a $50K buyout. I can’t imagine they keep him when they have better defensive options and better left-handed bats off the bench.
There was an article in the UT about Wade on Monday that explains why he will stick as a Padre and why they signed him to a 2 year deal.
sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/03/finally-able-t…
straightup, I think that because of Rosario’s continued issues with strike outs that the Padres signed Iglesias as insurance. If Rosario can strike out a reasonable amount the rest of camp, Iglesias doesn’t make the team and probably opts out. Rosario is younger, cheaper, hits better and for more power, and plays better defense. but right now he is striking out 30% in camp after striking out over 30% in his short trips to the majors.
Re: Wade— Cool article, and I’m glad he’s able to contribute in his way. His role still seems a bit wasteful to me. I’d love it if he wanted to stay in the organization as a coach, but given his comments about wishing to be a full-time player, I don’t see it happening. About all he can offer at this point is pinch-running and roughly average defensive utility around the diamond, neither of which would be difficult to replace.
Re: Rosario — I really hope the team doesn’t give up too early on him. His MLB + ST K% is a massive jump over his MiLB career numbers, and I don’t think that’s an issue with his approach, eye, etc. Seem to me like he’s just having some anxiety as the 26th man (or presumptive 26th man) on the roster and making poor swing decisions. I don’t think he’s going to be a can’t-miss player, but 6 years of IMO 1~2 win Rosario is a lot more valuable than a year of Joe/Iglesias or 2 years of Wade. I don’t envision that the Padres would be able to sneak him through waivers.
Who cares how hard the ball is hit!? He’s not a HR guy. A base hit is a base hit. Bat control matters more.
Only if you have a BA and OBP like Arraez. If not, you have to hit the ball hard or you are relegated to signing minor league deals every season like Iglesias.
Damn Mets
The Mets screwed up a layup here reminiscent of Dan Murphy.
Not even close
I loved his second go-around with the RS, and he had a reasonable hand in the NYMs making the playoffs last year. Good signing, imo.
It’s not far-fetched to see the Padres and Mets competing for the final playoff spot.
Or the #2 WC spot. Or the #1 WC spot.
My point is that Iglesias could be the difference between one team making the playoffs and the other missing out.
Literally always the Padres.
Has someone told them Spring Training started last month?
All I’ve read all off season is how the Padres haven’t done anything. Now they sign Iglesias to a Minor League deal and it’s “Always the Padres”?
Weird
Pinga!
The hazards and risks of asking for too much money or years and signing well after spring training has already started.
Pete Alonso has entered the chat.
My surprise is two fold, One, I could not believe that with so many teams needing a quality player that can hit and play either 3B, SS or 2nd did not sign him…why the Yankees didn’t make a move for him is beyond me.
Two, This contract is certainly not a bank buster and another good get by AJ Preller. this reminds me of when AJ signed Donovan Solano last season and Solano did a great job for the Padres. Jose Iglesias will be a very versatile piece for San Diego…give Manny a day off and play 3B, give Xander a day off and play SS, give Jake a day off and play 2B or Arraez does the DH thing with Jake playing 1B. Mike Shildt has got to be loving life with another versatile option for the infield. He can hit (.280 average / career with a career .982 fielding percentage at all three positions combined), can steal a base, run into one and hit the Western Metals Building and contrary to the perception that he can be a clubhouse problem, he will be just fine. The Padres have a very strong clubhouse leadership chemistry with Machado, Bogaerts, Heyward, Tatis, Arraez, Cronenworth, Diaz, Musgrove, Darvish, Merrill etc… so that is a non issue in my opinion.
As much a some people keep saying the Padres are not doing anything, AJ Preller has quietly put together a pretty good roster even after losing Kim, Profar, Scott, Solano and Peralta and has added Heyward, Diaz, Joe, Iglesias, Pivetta, Hart and has Wade, who is a legit utility guy that can play infield, corner OF, steal a bag and the young guys trying to make the team in Rosario and Ornelas who are showing well this spring.
The Padres will be just fine
AJ Preller Is collecting second baseman now? Last year’s shortstops were all the rage.
His last album was pretty good, but it didn’t include any hits.
OMG! The Padres signed a 3.1 WAR player to a minor league deal.
Makes sense that Joe Church would become a Padre.
This seemed like an obvious padres move. They always sign these older position players to minor league deals
But how does that make you feel…?
Goodluck to Jose. He was a great Met for the short time he was here. Class act, smooth defender, all around a great guy. I would have rather they traded McNeil and kept Iglesias for the year. The Mets needed the one spot open for the younger players which I understand
Good seeing you LFGMets. If the Mets needed the one spot open for the younger players why did they sign Nick Madrigal in the offseason for the same role who injured himself in the first ST inning and is now out for the Season? Who will play backup MI now? Not understanding any of this.
@Robrock30 the issue is, Iglesias wanted a major league contract to play with us, he felt like he earned that right. Hes signing with the Padres on a minors deal because he has a better chance to make the team through the ML deal. In my opinion, Madrigal was signed to be a stopgap for that last spot for a month so that the younger players could get consistent playing time in Triple A. Basically the 2024 version of Zack Short with worse defense but a better bat
Sounds like he’s the Met’s version of Jurickson Profar. Maybe he’ll follow up with a “bounce up” year (i.e. opposite of bounce back), versus the “return to mean” that usually happens when a 4A ballplayer signs on after one good year. SD will miss Profar. Maybe Iglesias can sub in for Prof, and his missing offense and defense.
These signing are always pretty much a crap shoot any way. Anyone boo-hoo’ing this signing, ought to remember what Preller’s operations team did with late signings last year. A few of them carried the team though much of the year. Most of them signed bigger contracts elsewhere. It could certainly happen again.
It was good to see Firecracker back in Padres camp yesterday. He was working out on the minor league side of camp in the morning, but joined the major league camp this morning.
This is a sign that Rosario’s strike out issues may see him being DFA’d to start the season. He has no options left, so would have to be placed on waivers to be outrighted to the minors.
For those that had been trying to say that the Padres absolutely had to cut payroll or were under payroll constraints, if Iglesias makes the major league squad his contract puts the Padres over the 2nd CBT threshold.
Happy Jose got a deal, he made last summer a lot of fun as a Mets fan. I’ll be cheering him on in SD!
