The Padres announced this afternoon that Jake Peavy has returned to the organization as a special assistant to CEO Erik Greupner. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the news just before the club finalized the hiring.
“I’m incredibly appreciative of this opportunity to reunite with my Padres family,” the longtime MLB starter said in a press release. “San Diego has always held a special place in my heart. I’m a Padre through and through – from the moment I was drafted by the team until this very day, and I can’t wait to work alongside this talented group and contribute in any way I can to the success of this great organization.”
Peavy, 43, played more than half of 15-year big league career in San Diego. The Padres selected him out of high school in the 1999 draft. Peavy reached the majors three years later and broke through as an ace by 2004. The righty won the ERA title with a 2.27 mark over 27 starts that season. That kicked off a run of four sub-3.00 showings across five years. Peavy led the National League with 216 strikeouts in ’05. His 240 punchouts and 2.54 earned run average in ’07 were both best in the majors. He won the Cy Young and finished seventh in MVP balloting.
The Friars traded Peavy to the White Sox at the ’09 deadline. Over parts of eight seasons in a Padre uniform, he worked to a 3.29 ERA with just over a strikeout per inning. Peavy’s big career stretched for another seven years. He played for the White Sox, Red Sox and Giants through the 2016 campaign. The Padres inducted him into their organizational Hall of Fame in 2023.
Well deserved. Like to see Jake stick around with the org in some capacity.
I don’t know if Greupner or the ownership group bleeds Padre gold, but new assistant to the CEO does.
Great guy, one of the top Padres pitchers
Vegas – Agreed, he’s a great guy!
He helped bring home another Red Sox championship in 2013, and he even spent $75K on a Duck Boat because he cherished his time in Boston so much.
2014 World Series Champion with The San Francisco Giants.
Forever Giant !!!
Storming the field and celebrating with Ishikawa between 2nd and 3rd was awesome. Love that memory.
Wonder if Peavy is giving up his gig on MLB tv after taking the Padres job. Guess he has to—-doesn’t he?
Who knows? It’s a pretty vague title. Both former GMs Brian Sabean and Omar Minaya have been Yankees senior advisors for a few years. I don’t know what roles they have.
He was on 97.3 this morning and said he’s staying in the same capacity with MLB Network.
“He was on 97.3″…For some reason I wasn’t expecting him to be so good on the MLB Network but he gives excellent insights and takes.
Thanks 4SFG.
Gets a front office Job with no experience? Must be nice being the complexion of privilege..
Take your racist garbage down the road,,,Jake the Snake was one of the best homegrown Padres pitchers ever and it has nothing to do with “complexion of privilege”
You are the complexion of special Ed.
@3 finger split…@Harrisstan is obviously an identity politics racist.
Don’t worry though, because they are being called out everywhere, splintering their party and quickly becoming a dying breed.
You are the complexion of special Ed.
=======================
Harrisstan is the reason why the Dept of Education is being dismantled.
“Vague title..former GMs..I don’t know what roles”…It’s all pretty much spelled out on the “Seinfeld” show. Where have you been?
Nice to see. The guy was a warrior on the mound for them.
Peavey was great as a player so fast to MLB
Seemed like he was the most notable guy on a lot of bad padres teams in the 00s
Brian Giles was also pretty good.
Yeah he was good. Some great years with Pittsburgh too.
Giles was a fantastic hitter and had a great career. Pretty overlooked player.
Adrian Gonzalez with the bat, Peavy with the pitching. Great players on (mostly) bad teams in SD.
Phil Nevin, Mark Loretta, Brian Giles, Khalil Greene (2 in ROY), Trevor Hoffman.
Loretta was great for a few years
Love that icon, LaFleur.
Jake “Satchel Paige” Peavey working an angle…
Went to college back in the day in San Diego when Peavy was in his prime. Worked at a deli/liquor store and always had free tickets to Petco being offered left and right so I saw plenty of his starts. Dude was filthyyyy. Numbers don’t do justice considering how prevalent offense still was while the steroid era was winding down.
Woah, didn’t know Jake Peavy was that old, or started his career that long ago…man, now I feel old. I mean, I thought the guy was still pitching somewhere in a market I pay no attention to like St. Louis or Washington DC.
Jake might be the ace if he returned to the White Sox this season!
Peavy! Nice gig bro
Not surprised. Jake was always close to SD.
Great to see the Jakemeister again! Happy for him.
Jake’s role is going to be to share, with the Padres, everything he learned about championship culture while in Boston & San Francisco.
Looking good Jake, sure you don’t wanna be the 5 starter?
Pretty sure he could still shove for five innings as a spot starter!
I believe he was the last pitcer to pitch to Barry Bonds. Grooved him nothing but fastballs. The flyball ended on the warning track. Bonds went out and shook Peavy’s hand.
Also gave up Bonds’ 700th home run. The two plate appearances were three years to the month apart from each other, number 700 coming on September 17th of 2024, and the final at-bat for Bonds coming on September 26th of 2007.
The asterisk has overshadowed that bit of trivia to the point where it might as well have not happened.
Jake said he was the most dangerous batter he ever faced.
Anyone with that many steroids pumped into him is dangerous if for nothing else but the roid rage.
I was always a fan of Peavy. Was pretty excited when the White Sox got him, always wanted him to be on one of Chicago teams. One of the best pitchers to take the mound very happy for him!
Good news.
And yet another sign I’m getting old.
Padres win ws after player manager Jake peavy kos Aaron judge.
Should have been offered many years ago. It’s pretty much just ceremonial, but at least someone extended the olive branch. I cant imagine this is anything more than front office spin to deflect what a world of hurt the business is in due to horrible contracts and bad trades.
Guy is solid.
Good for the Padres. Anyone that buys a duck boat so that his family can join the RS parade is okay with me.
I thought they were broke.
One of my favorite Giants, but yes, he belongs in a Padres uni.
