I think the Mariners made a huge mistake by not trading Castillo.
The Mariners seem to operate on the defeatist premise that “it doesn’t matter who we bring in, everyone gets worse hitting in our park”.
They also seem to believe that their rotation’s success is based solely on raw talent combined with expert development.
These ideas don’t mesh. I believe they could have traded Castillo and gotten similar production from several other pitchers at half the cost or less. Their stadium that wrecks hitters, also makes pitchers look better than they are. They should be actively exploiting this. Every year they should bring in a collection of reclamation projects to fill the last spot in their rotation. They should also trade that player at the deadline to a team desperate for starting pitching. The A’s employed this strategy successfully for several years. I’m surprised “Trader Jerry” never tried it.
The thing is, I would imagine the other 29 GM’s are aware of Seattle’s home park attributes too. I’d imagine they’d look at Seattle pitchers the way everyone looks at Colorado hitters: a product of their environment.
Especially in the modern era of analytics, it would be tough to repeatedly fleece opposing GM’s with short term redemption projects that are certain to turn back into pumpkins after they leave Seattle.
The offers they had for him were obviously light as they didn’t move him. They have little depth behind him & George Kirby was just sidelined with shoulder inflammation. Looks like doing the opposite of what you think they should do has worked perfectly.
The Madeleine Albright joke was gold!
Ah dunno Donnie, it was Albright…
Wasn’t she in Angels in the Outfield?
It’s interesting how the MLB’s reliance on the pitching carousel model (the idea that a team can throw a lot of arms out there and figure out a closer or ace later) might be masking deeper systemic inefficiencies in scouting, player development, and management.
MLB teams need to move from a “parts replacement” model to a “potential optimization” model, leveraging advanced data and algorithms to unlock the full potential of every player.
8:41. Like “Gray hyphen Rod” moniker.
8:42. Orioles won 101 in 2023 without a TOR piece. They won 91 with one. Difference? Injuries.
Whatever philosophy (black and orange Kool Aide) the Os r selling to their pitchers, as a unit, the staff seems to slurp it up. Much deeper staff this year compared to 2023. If they can keep relatively healthy, they should produce.
I’m calling fake poster…
