Lyles in 2022, Gibson in 23, Burnes in 24 and now Morton and Surgano this year. All durability guys. When it comes to signing FA SPs ,yes, I think it’s safe to say that the Orioles POBO prefers athletes risk averse … to injury.
On that note, I do believe the Os were eleventh hour candidates for retaining Burnes because he is a durability guy.
Quintana and Heaney do have injury history. So that’s a hard pass by Elias and crew.
Jeff – With all due respect, Morton will be in his Age 41 season …. I wouldn’t classify anyone that age as durable.
And Sugano’s ability to adapt to the rigors of an MLB schedule is something that needs to be monitored. We saw what happened to Yamamoto and Senga last year, it’s historically been difficult for Japanese pitchers to stay healthy coming over to MLB.
Hey Fever. Yep. Morton’s age is cause for concern. That said; pretty durable history is what had to have won Elias over. Personally, I thought it was a nice pull by the POBO.
In regards to Surgano, great point. You got me thinking here. Which, of course, is dangerous activity for this armchair GM. LOL. Cheers.
I’m far more bullish on the Os pitching moves than most. People are so focused on not replacing Burnes but that was never going to happen. The team didn’t do anything flashy but is still in great position to win the division. They won 91 games last year with half their pitching staff shelved. No team in baseball could have done better. This year they have one of the best bullpens in baseball with the return of Felix, addition of Kitteridge, and Suarez being the long man rather than sp5. The rotation is fine and they can certainly add at the deadline if needed. And the offense should be better with some improvements from holiday, Mayo, Kjerstad, etc. I’d be shocked if the orioles didn’t win 93+.
The AL East is going to be brutal there really isn’t a team that that is going to run away that division imo. I can see an argument for any team to win that division. I think Baltimore underachieved a bit last year but lots of young guys I expect them to be even better this year. The Red Sox improved a lot that’s a dangerous team. The Yankees could be really good will have to see how the offense will be without Soto not a big believer in that offense we will see. Tampa’s pitching is loaded they will be tough. Who knows with Toronto they have a lot of talent they seem to underachieve a lot as well. There just isn’t a patsy in the AL East. I think it’s anyone’s division some of the teams might need to get more fortunate then others but any team winning that division wouldn’t shock me.
