The Guardians and Rockies have reached a deal that sent outfielder Nolan Jones to Cleveland in exchange for infielder/outfielder Tyler Freeman, according to a report from Thomas Harding of MLB.com. The deal has subsequently been announced.
The deal represents a homecoming for Jones, who was a second-round pick by Cleveland in 2016 and made his MLB debut with the club in 2022 before being traded to Colorado in a deal that brought back Juan Brito in November of that year. Jones went on to finish fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting that year as he posted 3.8 fWAR/4.3 bWAR for the Rockies, slugging 20 homers and swiping 20 bases while splitting time between the outfield corners and first base. In all, Jones slashed .297/.389/.542 that season, which even in the inflated offensive environment Coors Field provides was good for an excellent 137 wRC+. Meanwhile, Brito has yet to make his big league debut for the Guardians but posted a strong .256/.365/.443 line in 144 games at Triple-A for the club last year.
As impressive as Jones’s first year in Colorado was, however, he suffered a significant sophomore slump in his second year with the club. Back issues limited him to just 79 games, and when he was healthy enough to take the field he was ineffective with a lackluster .227/.321/.320 slash line. While a downturn in production should have always been expected relative to his 2023 campaign given Jones’s unbelievable .400 BABIP that year, Jones’s lost power production was something of a shock. After barreling up a whopping 15.7% of his batted balls in 2023, that number cratered to just 5.9% last year despite his overall rate of hard hit batted balls increasing from 40.9% to 44.4%. That came primarily from a massive spike in groundball rate, as Jones hit 52.7% of his batted balls on the ground last year, ten points higher than the year prior. That left him to club just three homers last year and enter his age-27 campaign with plenty of questions about what his production would look like this year.
Those questions will now be answered back in Cleveland, where Jones now appears likely to have the opportunity to lock down the club’s regular right field job, which to this point appeared likely to be filled by Will Brennan. Jones offers more proven upside than Brennan, 27, who posted roughly league average offensive numbers in a platoon role with the Guardians last year. Brennan, unlike Jones, has options remaining and can be sent to Triple-A as depth for the coming season. Should he replace Brennan on the roster, Jones could share time in right field with right-handed slugger Jhonkensy Noel if the Guardians want to spell him against left-handed pitchers, though Johnathan Rodriguez is another option on the 40-man roster.
As for the Rockies, they’ll be parting with Jones to bring in Freeman, a versatile utility bat with the ability to play quality defense all over the diamond but minimal offensive potential. A career 83 wRC+ hitter who slashed .209/.305/.321 (84 wRC+) in 118 games with the Guardians last year, Freeman spent the majority of his time in center field but also got brief looks at shortstop, third base, and second base throughout the season. With Brenton Doyle locked in as the everyday center fielder in Colorado, it seems likely that Freeman will be tasked with a more regular return to the dirt in 2025. While a utility role off the bench could be in Freeman’s future given the presence of Ezequiel Tovar at shortstop and Ryan McMahon at third base, an injury to Thairo Estrada earlier this week opened up regular playing time at the keystone for at least the start of the season. Given that, it seems likely that Freeman will either serve as the Rockies’ regular second baseman or split time with veteran utility man Kyle Farmer at the position while Estrada recovers from the broken wrist that figures to sideline him for four to eight weeks.
Freeman was projected to be part of the Guardians’ bench mix come Opening Day, likely serving as a backup center field option behind Lane Thomas as well as a potential platoon partner for either Brennan or Kyle Manzardo. It’s possible a more regular outfielder like Rodriguez or Angel Martinez could be asked to take on that role, but one potentially intriguing candidate to join the club’s roster would be Brito himself. Brito is mostly an infielder with the vast majority of his time in the minors spent at second base, but he got a look in right field last year and could be an intriguing addition to the club’s bench mix as long as they believe in Lane Thomas as a legitimate everyday option in center field.
Rockies did a thing!
Did they acquire da cream of da crop?
Time will tell, but the cream always rises to the top
Oooooohhh yeeeeaaaahhhhh!!!! Jack Tunney! Nothing is nothing!
I remember one specific one, yeah, you promised that Tyler Freeman would never be in a dangerous position! You broke that promise didn’t you Mike Chernoff! And who had to come in and make that critical save, The Macho Man Randy Savage, covering for Chernoff again!
A very stupid thing!
Awesome. Nolan Jones back to Cleveland.
He could become a starter there
Cleveland loves a LH hitter.
Houston must be repulsed by them
Championship drought ends.
For who? 😀
Interesting!
Maybe a 3rd team is involved…
Freeman to Rockies
Jones to 3rd team
??? from 3rd team to CLE
Do people recall CLE dealt Jones to the Rockies a few years back??
There won’t be a third team but Hulk Hogan was the third man even though Dusty Rhodes and Tony Schiavone didn’t want to believe Bobby “the Brain” Heenan.
Back in “the WCW.”
*the Dubya Cee Dubya
ftfy
Heenan was right about Hogan all along. He spent 10 years trying to warn everyone but they just wouldn’t listen.
Now THAT is long-term storytelling!
It should be Brennan to another team
Cleveland will trade either Jones or Brennan to Houston. They will receive Ryan Gusto and some other young pitcher
“Do people recall CLE dealt Jones to the Rockies”
If they can read.
It is in the article.
If this is the deal this sux for the Rockies don’t understand this idiocy like Trevor story back 21
They are desperate for a right fielder.
He is automatically the platoon against righties.
so essentially cleveland got brito and nolan jones for the cost of tyler freeman? pretty good tbh
They gave up one great season of jones and one bad one plus had to develop all the players.
No they got Brito (whom they will likely move now that Bazzana is on the way) for Freeman and two years (one very good) of Jones.
But they already started with Nolan Jones so the net result is Brito for Tyler Freeman and 2 years of Nolan Jones.
I think this means Zac Veen has made the MLB Roster in Colorado and will start the season with Brenton Doyle and Jordan Beck.
Agree. Definitely means that Veen made the team.
Both expendable second round picks
Togs already blew by Jones at first
I actually think Rockies got the better deal.
Jones doesn’t play 1B. He’s an outfielder.
1B is easy to learn. Tell em Wash!
Jones doesn’t play much 1B, but he does have 79 innings there in the majors.. A whopping 10 games, 9 starts.
But Jones has many years of 3B time. Funny thing though, Nolan really wanted Tito to give him some 1B reps when we had Owen Miller as the primary backup. Guy had a point but the supposedly laid back Tito doesn’t seem to like being asked publicly for stuff. Didn’t work for Yandy Diaz either.
That is giving up on Jones really fast after a down injury plagued year
Rockies have all of the time in the world so I don’t know why they gave up after a year
Strange deal for Cleveland but i guess Outfield depth is a bigger need than Infield depth, though Freeman can play in the grass as well. Rockies get their replacement for Estrada so at least there’s that
Definitely not a strange deal they have a surplus of young infielders and Tyler Freeman was towards the bottom of the pecking order. Jones was absolutely phenomenal his rookie year and last year was killed by injuries. Obviously last year was very concerning but Jones has shown the ability to be successful in the bigs Freeman has not. I am genuinely very puzzled by this decision on the Rockies part and wonder if this is really the best value they could’ve got
K-Rate
Love to see trades like this. From RoX standpoint freeman can play infield or outfield and they had a log jam in the outfield
Wtf this is nuts even for the Rockies
Bad news for Will Brennan, hood news for Gabe Arias
Could be traded to a team that will actually play him
I am not an Arias fan. He is out of options and several teams (Braves) were possible spots for his defensive versatility and offensive production.
Arias has had a great spring, but I don’t see that lasting long. I think he’ll be on someone else’s roster by the end of May. Up until now he’s never hit at the major league level.
Watch both players have all star years.
Brennan and Noel must be struggling.
noel is hitting over .320 this spring
A quick look says BABIP fueled (.460) and the strikeouts are sky-high (39%).
Throw in his line drive is way high which is why his BABIP is enormous, his .306BA on a .460 is not good. What happens when there isn’t a BABIP supporting his BA. His swinging strike rate is way too high.
The stuff he needed to improve hasn’t shown up in the spring training. It’s not a closed book just a lot of parts moving.
Noel should be used exclusively vs lhp at this point. Any decent MLB rhp with a slider makes him chase his tail. Org was given an extra option year on him and it’d probably be worthwhile to have them use it so he can get in daily reps. It’s so hard to learn at the MLB level. Johnathan Rodriguez is great vs lhp too (better AAA stats than both Noel and Fry) so the team wouldn’t lose much.
Noel is not the answer. Terrible chase rate.
Jones might be a slightly better hitter but Freeman is a better fielder. Overall a pretty equal trade
Jones is an excellent fielder. Arguably best outfield arm in baseball and a very good athlete.
Great arm but still learning to play the OF. In one of the ST games I went to this year, first batter hits a fly ball to left center, he gets to it okay, and it clanks off his glove. That sort of thing happened in a couple of real games last season.
Slightly? That’s an understatement
Quite frankly, I was surprised that they would trade him. I know he didn’t have a very good year last season because of the injuries but I know there is a lot of potential with the bat
Nolan Jones, the pride of Holy Ghost Prep High School, Bensalem, Pennsylvania!
That’s spooky!
Not to worry. He’s a friendly ghost.
As long as dude isn’t wearing a white gown with white pillowcase with the eye-holes cut out, I can deal.
Wow Juan Brito still hasn’t made his debut at 45. Catchers take a long time to develop.
Wrong player linked or BR makes a rare mistake.
Juan Brito is only 23…
baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bri…
How did this blow by Dana Brown?!?
How does Houston dump the best RF in baseball and 2 LH batting prospects without adding a viable lefty bat to add to lineup? How do they miss on every LH OF option on the market (even Verdugo at $1.5MM) except Gamel a min lg retread that resigns for a maj lg deal but gets cut in ST?!? When was the last time a roster was so righty favored?
This is laughably absurd
Yeah but you guys got stud Cam Smith. I think Dana keeps his job and nobody feels sorry for the Astros.
2015 blue jays
You’re right, Verdugo made sense for them especially at 1.5 million.
I think the front office team in Colorado is a bit too Rocky Mountain High…Nolan Jones for Tyler Freeman? I mean, no wonder the Rockies are such a horrible organization. Go Guardians, and they just got a lot better!
The beer has a lot of gravity up there, not to mention the gravity bongs.
Colorado has the strangest front office in MLB. Do they even have a plan?
I’ve spent years trying to understand what the Rockies are doing and I still don’t have a clue.
My only conclusion is that they don’t know either.
Rockies play for their own amusement, like an island unto themselves a mile high up in the sky. The rest of baseball doesn’t really exist; except to provide someone for the Rockies to play against. As long as they get their usual crowds, everything is copacetic.
Very very good way of putting it
As a Rockies fan….. I don’t know anymore. Veen had to have been the main reason. He’s looked really good in the spring plus losing Estrada made this happen.
Cleveland employing the good old “mulligan” strategy on the previous Jones trade.
This most likely ends up being a completely inconsequential deal for both clubs.. but I like the deal for Colorado. Freeman doesn’t have a really high ceiling at this point but he could potentially be an everyday player. Maybe his bat will come around with steady ABs.
You are certainly correct in musing that this deal is unlikely to have long term consequences for either team, but it’s kind of odd to prefer it for Colorado. The Rockies have no intention of Freeman being an everyday player once their infield gets fully healthy–and lordy, Tyler’s a double play machine with the bat–but Cleveland absolutely NEEDS a long-side platoon bat in the outfield with some pop. Unless you completely disregard what Freeman has done so far in his career and completely ignore Jones’ admittedly BABIP-fueled 2023, there’s no way this deal doesn’t have more upside for CLE both short and long run.
Jones’ bapip was high but not ridiculously so. He routinely ran them in the .370 range in the minors. Zips has him for .357 this year. He hits em hard.
I like the deal for Cleveland, liked that they finally gambled on some big upside. And Freeman is a career .300 hitter in the minors who should feel most at home at 2B. Might work for both.
Reasonable take, but it’s hard to squint and see Freeman reaching a level that exceeds replacement level since he’s been stuck at 15% below that for so long. I don’t think regular play would get him there…and I was in favor of him winning the 2B job in CLE this year! But CLE must have gotten as sick and tired of his tailor-made double play grounders as I’ve been. I can’t stand it when he’s up and there’s a guy on first.
As for Jones, look up his outfield assists in 2023 as well. I sure hope he can stay healthy because he can definitely help CLE. The thing is, neither Rodriguez nor Noel are better overall players than Brennan right now, so CLE still doesn’t have a solid platoon situation in RF. Guess they’ll send Will to Columbus, though, since he doesn’t hit LHP any better than Jones does. Tough break for him.
Brennan’s personality, motivation, and work ethic have gotten him this far, but I think they’ll include him in a deadline deal. He just doesn’t hit enough to be an everyday corner OF.
@solaris602
Sadly, this is true, but the question always has been whether or not he’d hit enough to be a platoon outfielder, and for awhile it looked like he might, if he kept improving. He had been carrying solidly above replacement level results against RHP for awhile. Injuries sapped his progress last year, and now it looks like he’s not much of a candidate for even a platoon role. He’s going to be scrambling for work like every Oscar Mercado type does. Fortunately for him, outfield is not a strong position throughout the major leagues. I mean, Ben Gamel keeps getting jobs and I expect Will Brennan will as well.
Avory – I agree that Jones has more upside, he just seems like more of a longshot due to his swing-and-miss issues. I still think Freeman can play his way into an everyday role at 2B.. that’s not the most probable outcome but I like those odds better than Jones’.
Both teams address a need and trade from an area of depth though. Hopefully I’m dead wrong and both have great seasons.
I’ve lost your number, but I’m in your neck of the woods. Would you contact me on the former forum please?
I don’t mind trading Nolan Jones. The Rockies were overflowing with OFs. I am not a fan of trading him for a utility bench guy. At least get a reliever for him. Cleveland is full of relief pitchers.
Aren’t you the same guy that at this time last year was saying that Nolan Jones was better than Corbin Carroll?
Probably. Not like I have never been wrong before. But I don’t continue trying to ride a dead horse.
But I am glad I am so memorable to you. Guess I am doing something right.
That is a very memorable take.
Lmao he’s going to block you now.
Oh well. Being blocked by someone I have no real interest in knowing is not really a big deal to me.
Freeman is 25 and some scouts still believe in his contact tool. I love the notion that Coors Field is where contact hiters go to find themselves.
It doesn’t take a scout to see he has a “contact tool.” That’s not the problem, it’s that he can’t refrain from contact or improve the contact he makes. Just look at his GIDP rate, it’s atrocious. This is not a guy who sprays line drives all over the field and is just unluckly. Absolutely great kid with a wonderful attitude, his game is simply lacking for an everyday guy.
Betcha Nolan Jones has a solid/good offensive season this year, and becomes a fixture in Cleveland’s OF. Dude was solid in ‘23.
He was excellent, actually.
@ RonDarling
That’s the hope, but even as an optimistic CLE fan, it’s no better than a coin flip, if that. But it’s a worthwhile shot in the dark given current alternatives. We can always stash Will Brennan in Columbus as insurance against total failure or the seemingly inevitable injury.
Nolan’s a good player with all star upside who dealt with injuries all year last year. Great trade for the Indians.
He’s dealt with injuries his entire professional career. That’s why he was a 25 year old rookie. And why he was available again even from a lousy team.
Very strange trade by the Rockies. Jones isn’t coming off a great year, but was great in 2023, is only heading into his age-27 season, and is still a whole year away from arbitration.
Problem is we have 12 guys who could probably do similar things within the next year or two. This opens up playing time for younger players. I know that handing off a guy who has middle of the lineup potential for a toolsy below average bat is probably bad value but I think there is a better chance that Zach Veen is on the next winning Rockies team then Nolan Jones
Cleveland gets a shot at real upside but the player a year older and in worse health.
Colorado gets the steadier, lesser, more flexible player—with worse defense by Statcast—whose 2024 was better at the plate than it looked.
Both have four years of control, and fit the roster of the team they’re dealt to. Interesting little trade. Probably won’t change anything much in Cleveland, but they look like the only side capable of winning the trade big.
Freeman is a natural 2Bman in my book. I like seeing him getting a shot at full-time duty at 2B. If he isn’t quite enough, not much of a loss, he’s very versatile and is good for super sub duty. Good contact hitter. I wish Cleveland had traded Arias instead.
Absolute clown show in Colorado. The circus is in town early this spring.

Rockies getting fleeced again!
Jones had a monster year in 2023, hitting great and stealing bases, but tanked in 2024 because he kept hitting the ball into the ground too much—not because he lost his power. Cleveland’s smart coaches could fix that swing and turn him into a star again for almost no money, like getting a $15 million player for under a million. Meanwhile, the Rockies got Tyler Freeman, a guy who can play everywhere but doesn’t hit much, and they already have plenty of guys like him.
This trade shows that teams might be missing the real trick: figuring out how a guy hits the ball matters way more than if he can play a bunch of positions.
Yeah, it’s like it’s become an obsession with em. “You’re a 220 hitter that strikes out 150 times a year and hits 10 hr’s, but can play almost anywhere? Welcome aboard! Here’s 15 mil per and the #2 spot in our lineup!”
The Rockies front office might be the worst in baseball. Jones had a mediocre year last year. 2 years ago he was playing at an al star level. He is still young. They need startinh pitching and bullpen help. They don’t need Ramel Topia 2.0
But what’s going to be the take away when Jones realizes he’s not in Kansas (or high altitude Denver) anymore? Are we talking 20 HR ceiling?
Cleveland has a fairly short RF wall, very reachable for LHH so that should help Jones some.
If he hits twenty, that would be the most by a Cleveland out fielder since 2010.
when Jones realizes he’s not in Kansas
=========================
Jones had 1 HR last year at home. I think he will hit at least that many in CL.
Surprising Jones, only a year removed from a 140 OPS+ season is valued so low. It wasn’t even a Colorado effect that year as he had a higher road OPS. I’d take a shot on him too for that price.
Trading back for a guy you traded away is so weird
Why? Braves have done it twice for Duvall. Oakland A’s for Jed Lowrie. Astros with Ausmus. If you like the player, you can still trade them if the return is right. The same can be true if you find that you can get them back and give away almost nothing, which is the case here.
I get the liking but these guys mostly have families. Baseballs a business too but I feel like trading for and back on a guy that’s barely out of prospect status is a bit more different than all 3 veterans examples here.
Meh. It’s a business. Sometimes those million $$$ salaries can come with inconvenience.
But more importantly, a young player getting traded usually opens up more opportunity.
Business is always gonna be business. This is just akward for me. Hey we thought you were yesterday’s news but cmon we value you again.
Opportunity’s certainly both ways. Arias for sure. Maybe veen too now.
Just weird whacky world of sports here. But that’s baseball for ya for sure.
Gabby Arias is a happy man today.
when Cleveland originally trade Jones to Colorado, Antonetti stated ‘there was not a clear path to a position’ for him. Apparently, there is now ? or maybe there is no clear path for Freeman. This front office enjoys teasing the fans with empty promises anyway
So tell me, what were you ever “promised”? A championship? As if anyone can ever guarantee they can ever make you happy then. If you haven’t enjoyed one of the best stretches of CLE baseball in the team’s history, you’re no fan, certainly not one with any realistic expectations anyway.
This suggests the reasonable possibility that there is one more move to be made. A noel/jones platoon may strike out 200 times. Where does that leave brennan? Somehow the roster feels out of balance particularly when delauter may may may see the mlb this year. Where does he play?
Let’s stop worrying about where Chase DeLauter plays and admit he has work to do just staying on a baseball field, much less one in the major leagues.
What the he$$ did you trade Nolan Jones for?!? He had 20 HRs over 60 RBI’s in 23′. He’s got a rocket for an arm!! You don’t know what the he$$ you’re doin’!!!
Normally, I agree with Avery, a good judge of baseball. But not this time.
Cleveland is loaded with guys with upside, meaning the ever elusive power….Arias, Noel, now Jones. They’ve had a ton before…Zimmer, Chang, Sponge Bob, Bobby Bradley. But power ain’t crap, if you can’t make contact. The failure rate on this kind of profile is nearly zero. Throw in poor hit tool with significant injury history, and that gets you even less.
On top of that, Jones has no options, meaning that Cleveland is now stuck with two starting players that have a foot out the door.
Then you have to look at the trend lines…not just counting stats…of both players. One has shown progress over three years. One has shown regression.
The trade leaves Cleveland with less 40 man versatility, and a lot less defensive versatility on the MLB roster.
Jones has tools. Freeman has skills.
The difference between Brennan and Jones, if there is one, does not justify losing Freeman.
I spent endless amount of time in the aftermath of the Jones trade (the first time) defending the move, for precisely the same reasons you are citing now, CATS. And I haven’t changed my opinion of Nolan or Brito. But Tyler Freeman isn’t getting better. There’s no trend line. He’s an out-making machine who refuses to walk, chases pitches, makes soft contact, and seemingly generates an endless supply of double play grounders. And I say this as someone who wanted to roll with him as the everyday regular at 2B to start the season! I acknowledge he’s a great guy, but he will not ever come close to 4.3 WAR season like Nolan did in 2023.
Was that season fluky? Probably. And maybe so have been Chase Delauter’s injuries (and George Valera’s and Will Brennan’s) because that’s what caused this trade to happen. If Freeman’s upside, which is entirely contained within his versatility, was palpable to CLE, they would have never dealt him away for a question mark like Nolan Jones. But they know they can replicate Tyler Freeman, and have done so, over and over.
What they can’t seem to do is create some thump in the order. So they throw a dart on the wall in the form of Nolan Jones. Maybe it sticks, maybe it doesn’t, but let’s not kid ourselves that anything significant has been lost. Because Tyler Freeman had zero value in the broader baseball community and at least we got a lottery ticket where the first couple of numbers scratched off are on the board.
Yep. Brito, Bazzana, Genao, Arias, Schneemann, Francisca. Guards have plenty of 2B but little power esp in the OF from the LH side … And especially now that Josh Naylor is gone (yuck). Recall that Santana hasn’t hit RHP well since 2019.
But Freeman has shown improvement…all of which were not shown in his numbers, because of a flukishly bad BABIP, more than 40 points under his previous numbers. Without that misfortune, he would have been an at least average MLB hitter. An average bat that can play solid defense at multiple positions carries a lot of value.
His chase rate is not nearly as high as folks make it out to be…under 30% with gradual improvement every year. And he doesn’t swing and miss.
Freeman is an all around better player than Jones, and is more likely to stay healthy.
This trade did not give Cleveland a better chance to win this year…and with all the LH corner bats the Guardians are trying to pry into one roster….Brennan, Delauter, Manzardo, Kayfus, Velazquez…it doesnt make the Guards better in the future.
