The Cubs and veteran righty Lance Lynn are in talks on a potential one-year deal, reports USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, who adds that the Cubs are eyeing some further rotation depth. That said, Lynn could potentially emerge as a bullpen piece. The right-hander told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal earlier in the offseason that his agent had gotten calls from teams curious about using Lynn out of the bullpen, and he sounded open to the idea at the time.
Lynn, 37, spent the 2024 season with his original club, the division-rival Cardinals. He made 23 mostly solid starts, logging a 3.84 ERA with a 21.3% strikeout rate and 8.6% walk rate in 117 1/3 innings. The righty averaged only five innings per appearance and had a pair of 15-day IL stints due to discomfort and inflammation in his right knee.
Even with the limited workload, it was a bounceback effort for the 13-year veteran, who’d been torched for a 5.73 earned run average in 183 innings between the White Sox and Dodgers the year prior. Lynn was baseball’s most homer-prone starter that year, serving up an average of 2.16 long balls per nine frames. He trimmed that to a far more manageable 1.23 in his return effort with the Cardinals.
If the two parties to come to terms, Lynn would be a fairly surprising addition. Chicago already has Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon and Matthew Boyd locked into rotation spots. Presumptive fifth starter Javier Assad will open on the injured list due to an oblique strain but isn’t expected to be sidelined long-term. In the meantime, swingman Colin Rea could step into the rotation after signing a one-year, $5MM contract earlier in the winter.
The Cubs also have several young arms who are on the cusp of MLB readiness. Ben Brown, Jordan Wicks and Caleb Kilian are all already on the 40-man roster, as is journeyman Cody Poteet. Prospects Cade Horton and Brandon Birdsell aren’t yet on the 40-man but have both reached Triple-A. Horton, in particular, is generally ranked among the sport’s top 100 prospects.
Any of those arms might need to be relied upon in the early stages of the season anyhow, as at this point it’s hard to imagine Lynn would be ready to jump into a big league rotation or bullpen with domestic Opening Day just two weeks out. The Cubs’ season, of course, starts next week during their Tokyo Series showdown against the Dodgers.
Chicago’s payroll currently sits at an estimated $194.6MM, per RosterResource, while their estimated CBT number checks in at $214.5MM. That places them $26.5MM away from the luxury tax threshold. Signing Lynn on what would surely be an affordable one-year deal would still leave the Cubs with more than $20MM in space between their current levels and that CBT barrier, providing ample room for in-season dealings as the front office sees fit.
This would be a large signing by the Cubs.
A colossal mistake
Really makes no sense. Cubs have plenty of SP depth already. Seems a waste
Hoyer can’t help himself. Berti, Turner, Theilbar all replaceable with young guys that probably improve the team. Just keep adding the stupid dead money contracts. Workman, Brujan and Alcantara should be on 26 man roster for a fraction of the price. Instead they are forced to keep the senior citizens brigade. They should have just kept bellinger because they have done absolutely nothing with the money. Cam Smith will be starting in Houston and Tucker will be walking.
Not sure I agree that they have *effective* SP depth.
Hoyer needs to understand that there is a difference between depth and girth.
Led Hoyer, Are you drunk or just stupid?
MLB Top 100 Commenter—
“Talking to” Lance Lynn is fine, putting him on the bump, a terrible idea. And in Wrigley!!!!!
Would keep him away from the Brewers
Donut make that mistake
Donut do eat!
A big fat contract if ever their was one. This contract is absolutely rotund.
At this point in his career, Lance Lynn’s best slider is at White Castle.
Is there any doubt in anyone’s mind that I’ve been right the last 4 years anymore? I mean you can’t have any doubts left can you? This is basically sabotage. Keep him away from the Brewers? Seriously? I’d pay to drive him there if I thought they would sign him. I worry about some of you sometimes. Hoyer has to go. and his buddy Carter too.
I’ll ride shotgun!
Oh snap!!!!
I’m basically with you on this, Uncle–but I think it’s fair to ask: when Taillon has his annual injury, and Steele hurts himself trying to field a bunt, do we know that we have anyone better? I’d rather have Lynn start a game than, say, Kilian.
They’ll have Assad, Brown, Wicks, Birdsell, Horton,Killian, Noland any of which I’d throw out there before Lynn. I think the question you should be asking is what are they going to do when BOYD gets hurt like he has the last 5 years? Tallion has been on the 15 day IL once I believe in the last 2 years. twice at most. So ask yourself , Why did that moron Hoyer sign HIM for almost as much as he’s paying Tallion? I think you ask that question first.
I often ask myself that. Especially at 29 mill
When you figure it out let me know. Wait don’t, Because if you make sense of it to me the last 4 years of hating have been for nothing, And I’ll have to go to Rehab.
Whatever you do don’t quit that addiction!
How do you figure? This is a dumpster dive.
You might have missed the “large”, “colossal” and “huge” references offered in response to the Lance Lynn rumor. Just saying. 🙂
I’d love to see the Cubs sign Lynn as a closer!!!
Then I’d love to Lynn shut out and slam the door on this “John Mozeliak built Cardinals team” —— every time they played each other !!!!
Especially since it was Mozeliak who gave Lynn his walking papers !!!!!
I liked Lance Lynn when he was with the White Sox, rooting for him to get a starting job even if it’s with the Cubs. He would fit in good with Steele and Taillon.
Lance Lynn would best fit in at the Golden Corral.
The only closing he should be doing is at the Denny’s putting down Grand slams.
You mean an XXL.
I hate that they’re even showing interest. The dude is washed up, and they have so many better, younger options to choose from.
Huge if true
Do they have Denny’s in Chicago? Do they sell Grand Slams? If so then Lance will be fine.
Can confirm, Chicago has Denny’s
Lance we need to talk…..cholesterol is a little high and we need you to consider a strict vegan diet.
I like when Lynn was talking to the media about an argument he had in the dugout with the third base coach at the time and he says, “I’m more of a ribeye and potatoes guy. He’s a filet and Caesar salad guy. I just told him he was wrong, and then he went back to coaching third.”
Great pitcher.
I like the quote but not the pitcher.
He’s not an ace, but surely not THAT bad
Next to the word “average” in the dictionary is his picture.
Steak and potaties! His nickname is Porterhouse Butterpat Salisbury.
Yep, not a super-premium guy but a definite further sign of wanting to make the most of the Tucker year.
????? (with Lance Lynn?)
They should really just go with Poteet
You say “Poteet”, they say “Potato”.
Last time he was seen in St Louis little over month ago , he had lost a lot of weight. He’s the new thin Lance Lynn
I have a friend that calls him “L L Cool Whip.” Childish, sure, but I still laugh since he only gets brought up every few years. And my friend is….Husky, so it’s ok.
Big Lance went all carnivore. Good on him.
Say it ain’t so Salisbury!
…Throwing up fat pitches.
Lynn has playoff experience, too. World Series included, I believe.
Looks like Cashman continues to nap while more and more SP are coming off the board
Looks like Carlos Carrasco stands a very good chance of making the Yankees roster. Is Lynn any more of an upgrade over Cookie at this point? Probably not. Though i am surprised that Kyle Gibson is still available
I generally wouldn’t buy into it, but I’m really hoping this is one of those “Cub bias” postings to get clicks.
There’s not a single guy on the 40 man…nor a couple of dozen others that should be moved to make room for Lance Lynn.
Hard no from here.
This would do nothing for them. Who would they cut or option? Really dumb.
Are there a truckload of injuries that are being kept secret?
I can find someone in the top 50 players to move if it were Kyle Gibson….but Lance Lynn….no thanks.
Agree. Hard No!
I think Lynn would really change the constitution of the team. Their pitching needs to be a little more robust.
They could do worse. Aside from last year’s knee issues Lynn has been pretty durable for the most part, and he does eat innings. I’d much rather have him than Rea holding down Assad’s spot for the first month or two.
Not much worse.
He eats more than innings.
Apparently it’s a done deal.
I’d prefer Kyle Gibson if a move really is needed. But Lance had a better seasons in 2024, so I guess it’s alright.
He can’t be any worse than Colin Rea
This is true, the Rea signing was jarring I think.
$5m was a bit steep
I think he could Jammer.
No-Gibson yes
Gibson isn’t willing to be depth in the same way Lynn would be. Plus Lynn could literally eat Gibson.
Don’t know seems to be a Southside type of dude.
Have you heard what he said about the Sox after he was traded to LA, lol
Many Cubs fans are mocking this, but the thing about Lynn is, he wins games. When the injuries happen, I’d rather have him going into the rotation than, say, Caleb Kilian. Thumbs up.
Lance Lynn is a legit MLB pitcher and this would not be a bad or expensive one year deal.
You can NEVER have too much pitching and if he is serviceable then the Cubs benefit…get some starts from him and flip him at the trade deadline. I’ve always been a fan of his…BIG, hard throwing RHP that if healthy can eat plenty of innings for the Cubs either starting or out of the bullpen.
I see what you did there.
Inning’s aren’t the only thing this guy is gonna eat
Please, no, no, no! No Lance Lynn! Hoyer just needs to take a couple of Advil and take a nap.
They have a lot of extra baseballs they need to give away?
The Cubs are 7 deep at the starting Pitching and Bull been could be top10 in the Majors. Give him a spot on a minor lge deal as a bullpen you never know who will get hurt then trade him at the deadline or long relief on parent Club to insult the Cardinals.
The Mets are hurting badly sign there your last year in the league then off to The Mexican lg one year to pay the bills
I think this will work out for the Cubs. He had a 3.84/4.31 ERA/FIP. If you get that from you #5, you’re in good shape.
The bleacher bums will be happy and should bring their mitts when he pitches. Hoyer nuts if he believes Lynn better than wicks or brown!
This would be a stupid signing
Was against this but then looked at his 2023 stats. Did much better with a real team behind him (Dodgers) Still do not believe at this time he’s better than Rea but to have an extra pitcher is always a good thing. It would appear this is the year to go all in and see if the division can be won. Otherwise another year missing the playoffs. Problem with the Cubs is they have a lot of nice players that are above average. However not enough above average to win 90 plus games. They needed to add more than Tucker. I like Happ, Suzuki, and Crow Armstrong better than Bellinger too. Trouble is they committed to Swanson and now have a question mark at third. Will win anywhere from 80-90 games. They needed Bregman and a front line starter.
The Real Play here is to flip Lynn at the deadline for an asset. Future buyer beware.
I would do it. Assad was poor outside of the wind blown on games and he walked too many.
Rea is a swing guy. I like him as a multi inning plus a spot starter
Brown Wicks and Horton need to be on regular starts in Iowa. Brown is still working on a change up and you want that growth happening against teams that don’t matter.
Injuries happen so you want a easy transition when it does.
Nice comment but you need more fat jokes in it.
Rod Beck did fine being a fat pitcher
Also CC dominated at the plate. Both
David Swells… erm Wells was pretty good too
Bronco
The fat jokes are unhelpful. Also, he has reportedly lost 20 pounds (though he needs to lose at least 20 more…)
As a Brewers fan, I would be ECSTATIC if the Cubs signed Lance Lynn and his laser-straight fastball.
