The Angels are releasing outfielder Mickey Moniak, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The former No. 1 pick won an arbitration hearing against the team earlier this winter, securing a $2MM salary in the process. However, salaries awarded in an arbitration hearing are only partially guaranteed, so the team will only owe 45 days of termination pay — just under one-quarter of his salary (about $484K).
It’s a moderate surprise, if only because the Angels chose to tender a contract to Moniak back in November. He looked to have a real chance at being non-tendered after batting just .219/.266/.380 in 414 plate appearances last year, but once the Halos made the decision to keep him, it seemed likely he’d open with the club — particularly in the wake of Mike Trout’s move from center field to right field. Moniak’s bleak .173/.224/.346 slash this spring couldn’t have helped his standing, however, and the Angels will apparently go with the cost-saving route rather than hope Moniak can bounce back to his 2023 form, when he hit .280/.307/.495.
Moniak never seemed likely to fully replicate that production in subsequent seasons. It was a solid-looking line on the surface, but he struck out in 35% of his plate appearances that season and needed a colossal .397 average on balls in play to get to that production. He was an obvious regression candidate, though perhaps not to the extent we saw in 2024 and so far this spring.
With Moniak no longer on the roster, former top prospect Jo Adell looks to have center field to himself. He’ll be flanked by Taylor Ward in left and Trout in right. The Angels don’t have prototypical fourth outfielder now, though infielder/corner outfielder Matthew Lugo could add another option if he makes the roster. Trout, of course, can occasionally serve as a backup in center if Adell is out of the lineup, and it remains possible that the Halos add another center field option between now and Opening Day as teams make their final waves of cuts.
Glad I didn’t order the customized “Mickey” LAA jersey.
We just need to go down the street to find a better owner. Disney may be a complete train wreck right now but at least the Angels won a World Series when Disney owned them.
…that was despite Disney ownership.
This
No one seems to remember Disney had volunteered the team to be contracted and the disbanded
“There was a concept that Oakland would have gotten contracted and the ownership of Oakland would have taken over the ownership of the Angels and remained in Anaheim,” Tavares said. “There was another concept that the players on the Angels would have been disbanded, and the players on Oakland would have moved on to Anaheim.
a.espncdn.com/mlb/news/2003/0311/1522058.html
Disney was smart enough to hire a good GM and scouting department and stay out of their way.
That entire run during the aughts was talent acquired by Disney.
Much different than the current guy.
Maybe Arte should make Snow White and Disney should go back to owning the Angels?
Right now, i think they both kinda suck.
Another number 1 (1) pick shot to hell. Ahahahahaha!
…and speaking of number 1 picks shot to hell, you can Adell to the list too (10)
@NYCR,
Please finish your posts with your signature,
“Ahahahahaha!” I find it extremely disconcerting when you don’t.
@Bart
That’s funny, I’ll try to do better! Ahahahahahaha!
Moniak should have been traded two off-seasons ago after he broke out and there was league demand for him. Angels kept him and then forced him to the bench to start the season. Personally, I don’t like this, but they feel Lugo and Paris are the future and both can provide more– and I agree, but they didn’t get anything for Moniak and they could have. Bad management.
Glad I didn’t trade for him in my league
Has he really been that bad where the angels are releasing him to save like $1.7mil, rather than just DFAing him? Maybe I’m missing something
Might’ve gotten a gig in Japan
yes. He’s been that bad. Can’t hit lefties, and now that righties have figured out he can’t hit breaking balls, he can’t hit righties either
Both are correct!
Lugo and Paris are impressive enough this Spring to make the Angels halt the continuous “hope” parade for Moniac. Adell gets a longer leash because of the home grown investment, but that leash is getting shorter as well.
Well, he hasn’t been good.
The article says Lugo, but I am thinking it may be Paris. He is typically an infielder, but has played a bit of OF in spring. He has look very good at the plate. He went from lost at the plate to incredibly confident.
I know he worked with Aaron Judge’s batting coach, but I wasn’t expecting such a dramatic turn around.
The Angels need to hire Aaron Judge’s coach as their batting coach as he’s done wonders with Paris.
Can anyone explain this to me? Young guy, stunk last year but the year before had a .280 batting average and only cost $2 million…is a suspension coming?
He had an 85 game stint of above replacement level ball and the other 5 years of his pro career have turned in some of the worst numbers I’ve seen. Albeit in just 33 AB’s but he had a -5 OPS+ in 2021 and -3 OPS+ over 46 ABs with the Phillies in 2022. He’s really a bad ball player. He’s lucky to of gotten that $2M.
2023 was a mirage. 35% K rate with a 2.8% BB is a recipe for terrible stats—like he has had every other year of his career. He had three torrid months, which can never be taken away, but regression was inevitable.
A walk rate under 3% and striking out over a third of the time while still having a well above average wRC+ in anything larger than a week or two, let alone about a half season, is crazy. Only time a player has ever had that low of a BB%, that high of a K%, and was still an above average batter.
Because he hit .219 last year and is hitting .173 in spring and he strikes out a ton. The Angels will get better production from guys like Kyren Paris and Matthew Lugo and also may need a roster spot for Tim Anderson. Moniak has been mostly bad in his MLB career outside of 2022. Surprised the Angels pulled the plug since he’s a decent defender in CF but he just hasn’t been hitting.
*2023
@cybertron. The only thing is if Paris slides to 2nd. Is tim Anderson better than moniak.
Yes.
There’s a stat called BABIP which shows how often balls hit into play fall for hits.
In 2023 Moniak’s BABIP was .397 which is far above league average and completely unsustainable. Essentially 40% of the balls he hit fell in for hits.
Last year his BABIP cratered to .272 which is well below league average and with Mickey’s speed there was reason to think that would level out.
The problem is he strikes out so often and walks so little that his entire production will be determined by how often the few balls he does hit fall in for hits. And as his contact rate has gotten worse so have the results of his batted balls.
Watching Moniak in the Dodgers series was painful.
They explained it in the article. His BABIP that year was sky-high, as was his strikeout rate. The. 280 average was not sustainable. That’s why you guys need to stop paying so much attention to batting average. It’s a stat that can fluctuate greatly year-to-year. It’s not “sticky” like BB and K rates tend to be.
Yeah READ THE ARTICLE! Explains it quite well!
Thank you everybody, been an angel fan for 23 years since I used to live in OC and had friends with season tickets, moved out to Myrtle Beach so haven’t followed them as much. Appreciate the info. Makes much more sense now.
The one year the Phillies had the number 1 pick and there was really no sure fire prospects. I remember hoping they took Nick Senzel. Moniak is a good 5th OF’er. He bats left handed and can play CF adequate to above average. He’s still on the right side of 30 and has shown flashes. Can see the Oakland A’s, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals or Pittsburgh Pirates taking a chance on him.
Tigers need a CFer bad right now. Don’t be surprised if it’s they who sign him and have him platoon with the righty Margot in CF
He’s a solid CF. Just struggles with bat to ball skills. His swing is also all or nothing, all of the time, without any obvious efforts to adjust.
I’d rather have him in CF than Margot
or Ryan Kriedler
Tigers should definitely be reaching out to him/his agent.
I came to say that
He’s a lefty so he could platoon with Margot in CF.
From what the team has said, Detroit has no plans for Margot in CF. LF and RF only.
I’d rather have Mike Trout in CF than any of them.
Jo Adell season incoming?
I just read an article that called him a key building block of the 2025 Angels, this organization really lacks any sort of direction.
@thesplendid. They must be keeping lugo or Paris they can play center and the infield. Lugo was moved because he didn’t have great fielding stats. They both looked great in spring and it was against starters
Paris revamped his swing, I pray to god the Angels give him everyday ABs at AAA to work things out out.
What he did this spring is promising, but basically meaningless.
He needs to play everyday. Adell needs to play everyday. So does Schanuel. These guys need ABs and Adell needs a half season of every day ABs to turn his career around.
They’re converting Paris to CF– he needs reps defensively. But after a couple of months if he’s still hitting– he’s going to get called up. He’s not just hitting, he’s hitting the ball HARD. Lugo can be the 4th outfielder. If Adell hits ..220 again and is a strike out machine– he will be released as well and they will go with the younger kids. Potential time is over. Angels need production. This offense looks anemic. Adell has had several years to produce and so has Moniak. Lugo is for real and I believe Paris is as well. The ANgels just need league average production– pitching actually looks good.
If the Angels go into June and Paris is ready and Adell is hitting 220 with a 30% KRate, then by all means, make the switch.
he wasn’t good last year, and he was horrible this spring.
Just time for a change
@cookmeister 2. Yeah he was acquired for syndergaard. I guess you can argue about keeping moniak and dfa’d Anderson. Angels can trade moniak it won’t be for a bag of rosin. Probably a low level prospect
You keep Anderson now and if he doesn’t produce they can let him go and move Regnifo or Paris to second with Moncada playing third. Right now Moncada might miss the opening series, but he’ll be back. And if he can’t get it done they still have JD Davis or Regnifo to play third.
@cook. The Angels are trying to raise the floor for change this year.. They have turned the page on a bunch of players that lowered the floor, Suarez, Canning, Moniak. etc. Hopefully, Quijada is next.
@google. Not mad at it but he’s wasn’t a bad bench player, maybe bounce back candidate. A trout injury is very possible. I’ll take moniak over atleast 4 guys. Just worried when injuries happen we will be stuck with tucker, and guillorme essentially just waiver wire junk. I would’ve kept lugo, Paris, moore, kingery as the minor league callups.
I don’t see where there is room more Quijada. Too many arms that are producing and they already have several lefties. McDaniels is making this team, as is Brock Burke.
@carlafong. I agree didn’t see moniak getting cut. Quijada is coming and that’s okay. I’m waiting for the rest because you could’ve done Paris at third for a week and cut davis. McDaniels and Burke were safe after perdomo was acquired. Q and saurez were the casualties. I just don’t think moniak was the worst roster player. If he sucks for a month fine. He’s probably the best centerfielder on the team, and he’s the pillar replacement essentially bench guy good defense.
This sentence lacks any sort of direction. A 25 year old GG finalist CF who has shown in spurt he can hit is a decent building block. What are you talking about?
The writer of that article is clueless. You need to get your information from someone else.
Is Klentak still with the Brewers? He might be interested.
LMAO – KUDOS
He could go to the Marlins and be their all-star rep this year
I still think the Marsh trade is a win-win. Captain Caveman has done well in Philly. O’Hoppe will be a solid piece for a few years and anything the Angels could get out of Moniak was a plus.
Technically Moniak was the return for Thor, not Marsh.
I was off by a trade doh (said in Homer Simpson voice). Thanks for catching that. In that case that trade was a lose-lose 🙂
Moniak was traded for Thor I thought.
@top. Yeah it was 1 for 1. I’m in the camp keep him this year, as a defensive replacement. My guess they figure they can something better than cash considerations probably a young international shot in the dark.
I agree, it did work well for both sides. I could be wrong but wasn’t Moniak in a separate trade with the Phillies? Syndergard maybe?
Re-signing him when everyone else in the league has known for years that he’s a bust was yet another bonehead move by the idiocracy that runs this franchise.
Hold a roster spot for him is dicey. Adell although underperforming has a higher upside and can play CF. However, only makes sense if the roster spot is allocated to someone better.
That 2016 draft 1-10 was rough
I’d go as far as saying the 2016 MLB draft 1-31 was rough.
I had issues with Klentak – never liked his approach. But his biggest issue was player development rather than talent evaluation. He was kinda’ average when it comes to the talent side, but simply woeful when it came to both player and organizational development. Too young and arrogant and too saberside-focused for my taste for sure.
The mistake with Moniak was this – when you have a 1/1 pick, you don’t choose a HS player with a high floor and lower ceiling (such as Moniak). Choose the college guy that you have a better handle on, or take a big swing at a guy with the highest ceiling possible, knowing that the bust potential is bigger.
I am so happy to have a real pro in Dombrowski – it has been a sea change in a positive way for the whole organization.
If you prefer the college player with higher floor, you end up with a dud like Greg Vaughn, Henry Davis, or Tork.
@Reyn – That is actually not what I said.
Angels are moving on from the #1 pick (Moniak) to the #3 (Ian Anderson) hoping for better luck!
Nick Senzel is probably at home waiting by the phone if the Angels want to also give the #2 pick a shot.
Go Mavs. Iykyk. Wish him the best of luck from Encinitas 🤟
Moniak got JD Davis’d.
@ybc. This probably means quijada is probably gone. He goes to arbitration again, and has a buyout. It might be funny if he was saved for jd Davis. I guess we will see how it plays out, but I thought he was fine as a defensive replacement.
Opens the door for Paris and or Lugo who have both looked great this spring.
Detroit on line one, Mr Moniak
“The Angels don’t have prototypical fourth outfielder now . . .” Although it’s true that the Angels don’t have a prototype for the 4th OFer, in context, Steve clearly means they don’t have a typical 4th OFer type on the roster. Why do sportswriters use the word “prototypical” when the mean “typical?” Doesn’t matter. Languages evolves, I guess, but it’s just always struck me as weird that the correct word is shorter than the incorrect word, but still doesn’t get used.
Moniac was never good and I took some heat saying his hot stretch was a mirage.
Please, please, please keep Paris in AAA. He completely changed his swing, give him time in the minor leagues to adapt. Fifty spring training ABs are meaningless.
But I fear the Angels will screw it up.
@halo11fan. I just wanted him to have another season. Someone will trade for him. That’s probably what the angels are thinking about keeping Anderson, and Davis to just grab some lotto tickets, because the garcia trade and estevez trade look decent. Lugo and Paris definitely accelerated it
I think the Estevez and Garcia trades were good. I can’t believe i.m writing that.
I’ll save my blind squirrel comment for later. Hopefully I won’t need it.
@halo11fan. Perry hasn’t been terrible on trades. Maybe peguero for renfroe? I’m definitely in the camp of we need more darts to throw at the board. I would say zeferjahn for garcia straight up was a win. Lugo might just replace moniak. Kavadas not high on him but he’s fine for a callup and waving the flag. quijada and moniak should bring back a warm body.
I agree with most of that.
I’m not crazy about Kavadas either (not a fan of HR-BB-SO three true outcome hitters) and would have preferred keeping Wagaman over him.
@orange. He’s the third guy, and a backup if crap hits the fan fine. But definitely hulk smash or hulk strikeouts . That’s why I’m saying trade because it’s sadly depth we need. If moniak and quijada get something cool. Davis or Anderson mid-season or early fine just need something. I would say build a infrastructure and not spend money, but it’s Moreno.
Tigers calling in 3.. 2.. 1
If I’m Adell, I’m getting nervous. With Paris and Lugo looking really good in spring training and moniak and himself not looking that great, I would be concerned.
Really? Washington is Adell`s number 1 fan. He loves his overall athleticis, his power, speed, effort and his willingness to be coached. You must type on personal suppositions without any foundation of supporting evidence. I read the articles and listen to the interviews. You can’t be more
wrong with your observations. They have been trying all spring training to keep Adell calm and concentrate on the position change to CF. They never worried about his offense. He has a chance to match Carlos Pena`s 2007 season.
Glad the Phillies have invested more time , energy and expertise into their drafting process after
drafting Moniak.
@htbnm57. Was a spy helping the angels, but that didn’t even help haha. Fine o’hoppe wasn’t bad.
Although looking back at that draft it was pretty awful in general. Interestingly enough Brandon Marsh who the Phillies got in the trade for Moniak later was in round 2.
@htbnm57. Yeah it was a bad first round. Most of time it’s because teams mess with the slot bonuses.
Moniak was really hurt by the Angels not playing him regularly and platooning with Adell. Adell is a terrible ball player both offensively and defensively. He is not the answer and I expect zero from him.
@redstitch. Yeah its possible he asked for a release or trade. I’m not going to freak out if they keep lugo or Paris, but they have options. Something doesn’t sound right maybe they said his role was a defensive replacement and pinch runner, and he said something.
Wow, they really did it. Between this and Suarez being gone, it seems that they are switching up their approach.
I’m actually surprised that they aren’t just running out the same ol’ thing AGAIN. Lugo and Paris seemed promising. I say let them play. 2025 is a losing year anyway.
Timing of it seems odd to say the least though. I wonder if there were no interested parties in trading for him OR if he voiced his displeasure with his role.
Not that this wasn’t the right move to but the Angels in general have to be the worst run organization in MLB?!
@space. Saurez, quijada(maybe), and moniak . Definitely are signs, but who’s taking his spot tim Anderson, Davis or noda. I’m not sure if moniak is any worse. He’s not a bad bench player if that’s the direction, and cut ties a month later like the three mentioned after that we have no depth.
Making room for Luis Jr ?
Reciprocally speaking of course;)
Hey Preller you know what to do this dude will surprise people in the Padres system. Sign him to a minor league deal, when you DFA one of the old players pull him up.
Angels might regret this move around May 1st when Trout goes home for the season…
I’d rather play Adell, Paris, and Lugo over Moniak. If Moniak is consistently in the starting lineup, then your franchise might have a problem.
I’d rather play you over Moniak.
Say what you want about Adell, but he lowered his KRate to a tolerable level and hit 20HRs. He was also a gold glove finalist.
He making small improvements every year. I don’t know if he has a moderate upgrade in him or not. Give him 2 or 3 months to find out.
Orange rather play yo mama over Moniak
How can the Angels defend giving Adell the everyday starter role in CF? He is absolutely not ready for that, and may never be.
Kyren Paris will back-up at Center and in the infield.
BRANDON MARSH SURE LOOKS GREAT!
Tough break for the steeltown girl on a Saturday night
