The Angels announced they’ve acquired lefty reliever Angel Perdomo from the Braves for cash or a player to be named later. The Halos designated infielder Scott Kingery for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot. Perdomo had not previously been DFA, so this drops Atlanta’s roster count to 39.
Perdomo spent more than a year with Atlanta but never threw a regular season pitch for them. The 6’8″ southpaw was a member of the Pirates when he underwent Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 season. Pittsburgh waived him at the end of that year. Atlanta claimed him, non-tendered him, then brought him back on a fresh major league deal. They kept him on the 60-day injured list for all of last season to see whether he warranted a spot in their bullpen once he returned to health.
The 30-year-old Perdomo has gotten back on the mound this spring. He has made seven appearances, working 7 1/3 frames of two-run ball. Perdomo has issued four walks while recording six strikeouts. The Braves evidently didn’t see enough in that small sample to carry him as a third left-hander behind Aaron Bummer and Dylan Lee. Perdomo is out of minor league options, so the Braves couldn’t send him to Triple-A without running him through waivers.
That the Angels jumped the line via trade suggests Perdomo would not have cleared waivers. The Halos will also need to carry him in the MLB bullpen or make him available to other teams. They’ll very likely move on from one or two left-handers by Opening Day. The Angels now have five lefty relievers whom they can’t send to the minors.
Brock Burke, José Quijada, José Suarez and Perdomo are all out of options. Rule 5 pick Garrett McDaniels needs to stick on the roster or be waived and offered back to the Dodgers. Burke will make the team and McDaniels is pitching fairly well this spring. Suárez and Quijada seemed like bubble candidates to stick on the roster all offseason. Neither has pitched well this spring. Quijada has been blitzed for nine runs in 3 2/3 innings. Suárez has surrendered a trio of homers across 7 2/3 frames.
Perdomo has pitched in parts of three big league seasons. His best work came with Pittsburgh two years ago. He turned in a 3.72 ERA while striking out almost 38% of opposing hitters in 29 innings. His fastball averaged 94 MPH before the Tommy John procedure. Perdomo is playing on a pre-arbitration salary and is under club control for four seasons. He’d be an affordable bullpen piece if he sticks on the roster.
Kingery, a one-time top prospect with the Phillies, has played one major league game in the last three years. Philadelphia had kept him in Triple-A after outrighting him off their 40-man roster. They traded him to the Angels at the start of the offseason. The Halos added him to the roster to prevent him from reaching minor league free agency. Kingery was coming off a .268/.316/.488 showing in Triple-A that led the Angels to get a look at him in camp.
The 30-year-old needed a strong showing in Spring Training to secure a spot on Ron Washington’s bench. He’s hitting .138 with 11 strikeouts in 36 plate appearances this spring. That pushed him off the roster and is likely to land him on waivers in the next few days. If he goes unclaimed, Kingery would have the right to elect free agency because he has more than three years of service time. Doing that would mean forfeiting his $770K arbitration salary, so there’s a decent chance he’d accept an outright assignment and head back to Triple-A.
Looks like the Braves have found a trade partner with an old friend as we keep dumping whatever we don’t want to them. The dude ended up just being a waste of money, albeit not much.
It’s good to have a safe dumping ground, a place to send all the garbage you worry a rival might somehow use against you.
Wash can send us Travis back at the All Star break when they’re out of contention.
We got Suarez wasting our time here. Take his spot new guy!!
The Kingery experiment takes a turn. He’d gotten a lot of playing time early this spring.
I hope Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada do well with Wash, I have a soft spot for them and wish them the best.
@halosheavenjj. Kingery Might accept the assignment. Anderson has had 4 decent years, he will probably opt out if he doesn’t make the roster. I think they go with the proven players for a month if it doesn’t work or Injuries happen. You got Paris in the infield and lugo in the outfield.
Kingery likely stays. He gets $775k and has a decent shot at playing his way into the team.
Ideally Lugo continues to look good so Ward can be traded for prospects. As much as I personally like Taylor, that would help.
@halosheavenjj. Yeah its going to get worked out. Probably keeping Davis, and Anderson. Davis will probably have a quick hook might need a 3rd baseman for moancada and rengifo. They might keep a extra pitcher for a week.
I was really high on Kingery back in the day – saw quite a bit of him in the minors and had him down as 2B that could be a top of the lineup force with terrific D and baserunning.
Wishing him well out there; not sure who is to blame for his downfall – the Klentak Regime development issues or his own stubbornness sticking with the wrong swing mechanics.
Depends if he thinks he has a hot elsewhere. He came off 6 year contract last year so he’s got$$
If this means no Quijada or Suarez, sign me up!
@johnnyangel. We could afford to lose them both, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Amen.
Should be a Quijada replacement. He appears to be at least a Quijada with 2 pitches. He can’t be any worse than the current Quijada that has only one mediocre pitch.
@googleme. That’s what’s i was thinking, and Johnson making it as the righty, and bye saurez.
I can’t say I get this, as a Braves fan.
He wasn’t going to make the roster.
They did the Angels a favor, AA used to work with the Angels GM.
A little surprising Perdomo hasn’t found a home somewhere. The BBs are nerve-wracking but the 14.6 K per 9, 6.2 H per 9, 1.0 HR per 9 in AAA are remarkable.
He’s frustrating to watch. He’s kind of like Aroldis Chapman as he throws hard, but when he can’t find the plate, he’s probably even more confounding, and that’s really saying something
You’d think a pitching coach somewhere can get into his head a bit to instill some confidence
Should’ve given them Ian Anderson as well. For cash considerations.
Anderson is going be a good piece; the Braves won’t have won a World Series in 2021 without him. Even in 2022 when Atlanta sent him down he was 10-06; he deal with injuries etc.
I really think that Anderson in the 5th-6th starter spot is going be good. In 2022 his issues were the 3rd time through line up; not be way the game is played with 4 to 5 innings from the spot and give to bullpen Anderson should do really well
Clearing a spot for McCann.
Or Baldwin.
Suarez is not an mlb pitcher
Not after the injuries in 2023.
Suarez never has been an mlb caliber pitcher. I can’t come up with any way to defend him still being on a major league team. But the Angels will stick with him on the roster because of a good month he had 3 years ago and he’ll continue to blow lead after lead.
phillies legend
A potential star ruined by the mid judgment of Gabe Kapler.
*mis-judgment.
Dump Suarez ASAP!! Tia
We better not keep Suarez and send McDaniels back to the Dodgers.
@evan siggson. Probably dfa’d Suarez and trade Q for cash.
It will be cool if he becomes the first Angel to actually play for the Angels.
Would be better if he played outfield… Angels in the Outfield.
I remember they had Angelo Encarnacion. That’s the closest they ever gotten.
Coincidentally also a former Pirate.
Angel Moreno pitched for them briefly way back in 1981-82
CA – Thanks you’re absolutely right, for some reason he doesn’t come up in BR when I do an Angel search.
Scott “The Man Who Would Be” Kingery
Watched all his spring appearances…. didn’t really see swing and miss stuff we saw with the Pirates two years ago. 6 K’s in 7.1 IP. Braves basically paid for his rehab last year.
If Kingery needs the 770K for another year of minors grind, THAT is the story. He made $24M with the Phillies.
Remember the 02 angels. Remember the titans
Dombrowski licking his lips? Bring the lost soul home?
I can’t see Dave D bringing back Kingery. Weston Wilson is a far better player; so are Edmundo Sosa and Buddy Kennedy.
Can it be?? Will Suarez be voted off the island?! Locked On Angels will have a FIELD DAY if Suarez gets bumped!
@space. So will talkin halos. I have a feeling he will get signed to a minor league deal.
When I saw the notification of a Braves-Angels trade I was hoping it was Ozuna+Kelenic+Elder for Trout and $200m. Maybe next one.
t]The Angels are setting up a secondary trade. They now control the lefty reliever market and can exploit teams needing bullpen depth. If Perdomo returns to form, he becomes a high-value trade asset or a core bullpen piece for years—all for a player to be named later.
@old york. Yeah i think they could trade quijada. Probably for cash. Perdomo is worth a try for low leverage situations.
I don’t know if having 5 lefties that Angel fans are begging to run two out of town constitutes “controlling the lefty market”. Having a lot of crap as opposed to a little crap doesn’t corner a market.
@thegr8One. Quijada will probably be traded for the old soda machine and cash. Just like perdomo. Someone will do it to jump the waiver line. Saurez is the one everyone hates. They don’t really need another lefty because they have plenty. It’s also because they got McDaniels from the dodgers and need him on the roster otherwise have to return him to the dodgers, and definitely looks good.
I understand everything you’re saying. So they are gonna keep the good ones and fire sale the bad ones. That’s not a “cornered market” as to the other persons post. It’s an offseason like every other.
@thegr8one. Probably joking, but they do have alot of lefties. That’s just a typical angels troll sign big free agents or angels dumpster dive. Yet there’s atleast ten teams that absolutely did nothing year in year out.
Really was starting to look like a Pirates keeper before TJ. Had some wicked movement in the ball.
This dosent surprise me trash for trash angels like be the Pittsburgh Pirates of American league this team never going win for a long time
I think it is time for Kingery to explore Korean or Mexican pro leagues. His lack of affinity for elite performance is sadly obvious. He’d be a great curiosity in a league with a lower high-end.
That’s sad and mean to say about someone with feelings and a family, I realize. He was the talk of the Phillies franchise for 3 years. When he did get the call-up, it seemed rushed until you saw that he was 26yo. Sadly, he just doesn’t have MLB talent.
If a documentary crew followed him around for the last decade, it would be the greatest baseball movie ever made. He’s been through it all. He needs a win.
@the roche. Kingery will probably get called up soon. If Davis and Anderson don’t perform angels will cut ties, and call Kingery up as a defensive sub, and pinch runner. Davis and Anderson most likely will opt out if they don’t make the roster. Kingery is probably fine with the 750k
It’s looking more and more like Kyren Paris will make the Angels opening day roster. He’s opened the eyes of} the entire Angels organization. He looks more like a1 complete player compared to Moniak And Adell as much it pains me to type that. He can start and back up in Centerfield, SS and the keystone. If Moncadais not ready for opening day, Paris would open the season starting at second base. If Adell doesn’t put up a a couple multi-hit games, he will likely be traded right before opening day. Waiving Adell would Attract a plethora of suitors due to his first round pedigree, his speed, his defense, his power and his overall athleticism.
Other teams would love to have a player with his base tools and try to turn him into a productive player.
I am a huge fan of Adell, but his strikeout problems are a really big problem to overcome, especially with his lack of improvement over the past 4 years.
After he improved in the final 02 months of abs last season due to changing his leg kick and turning it into a toe tap, they are now allowing him in spring training to select either the toe tap or leg kick pitch by pitch hoping to take advantage of his athleticism. They changed their philosophy after he hit a grand slam against the Dodgers earlier in camp. It could be that this change in philosophy has hurt his timing and when he finds it, he could get red hot. I have seen him get under a few balls lately that we’re close to going out of the yard, but he is getting under the ball too much.
Troutahni – Adell has never been mlb ready yet here he is platooning in CF. He has never spent a full year in the minors to develop properly. He was striking out at over 30% at Salt Lake but was still called back up. The Angels ruined any potential he had at becoming a good ball player by rushing him through the system. And Adell’s ego blocks him from being teachable. He needs to go somewhere he’s not as comfortable and realize that he needs to learn how to play the game to earn a roster spot. That won’t happen with the Angels.
Maybe the worst development in history of baseball. Adell had a 43/10 K/W in 121 PCL ABs, with -0- HRs. That’s as bad as it gets in the PCL, arguably the worst player in the league.
And that’s okay, since he was only 20.
But then they got the idea that someone that couldn’t hit a lick in AAA should start playing in the majors. And the 43/10 he had in AAA predictably became a 55/7 K/W in the pros.
And just to exacerbate the situation, they spent a few seasons promoting and demoting him.
Paris has earned it and deserves to be in the line up over Adell and Moniak at this juncture. Is his production sustainable? There’s only one way to figure that out.
Arte making moves
I’m wrong on Adell. Washington said the hitting will come and his defense at Centerfield has really improved over the past 5 games. He gave Adell a vote of confidence during his post game interview.
