The White Sox are in agreement with Mike Clevinger on a minor league deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The ACES client receives a non-roster invite to Spring Training.
Clevinger returns to Chicago for what’ll be a third straight season. He signed a $12MM deal with the Sox over the 2022-23 offseason. That was a generally successful pickup, as he turned in a 3.77 earned run average through 24 starts. That came with a below-average strikeout rate for a second consecutive season, leading to a quieter market last winter. Clevinger remained unsigned beyond Opening Day. He eventually returned to Chicago on a $4MM deal.
As a result of the late signing, the veteran righty agreed to start the season in the minors. That afforded him a few weeks to build his arm into game shape. The White Sox recalled him in early May. He took four turns through the rotation, allowing 13 runs (12 earned) across 16 frames. Elbow inflammation shelved him for a couple months. Clevinger was building back from that when the Sox announced in late July that he’d undergo season-ending surgery to address a disc issue in his neck.
The injury-plagued season limited Clevinger to minor league offers as he enters his age-34 campaign. He’s clearly comfortable with the White Sox, where there’s plenty of opportunity in the rotation. Chicago has added MartĂn PĂ©rez and Bryse Wilson on one-year deals this offseason. No other starter on their 40-man roster has even reached one year of major league service. Clevinger joins Justin Dunn and Jonathan Heasley as non-roster invitees who have MLB experience.
Wtph!
He back! 3 time the charm?
Absolutely reduckless that Clevinger continues to get some interest from other teams considering his off the field bs.
Why? It was the words of one women, The MLB did a thorough investigation and no criminal charges were ever filed.
I am in no way trying to cheapen what this women said, but I am not in favor of denying a man the right to pursue his career without any actual evidence of the alleged abuse.
Ditto to Trevor Bauer.
In Trevor’s case there were multiple women and MLB’s investigation led to the longest domestic abuse suspension in history.
The fact nobody wants to sign him is almost certainly due to what is in MLB’s investigation.
I know the public case looks like a sham job, but MLB obviously found some things nobody wants coming out.
Not only that Halo, but people forget Bauer was voted the most hated player in the league by his peers long before all the allegations. He’s a POS that nobody wants to share a locker with regardless of his disturbing off-field issues.
Yeah the sham job is Rob’s feelings got hurt…
liar
Trevor Bauer went to an arbitration style hearing over his accusations. That arbiter said the MLB was justified giving him the longest ever suspension under the DV policy. That’s as close to a court case as he will ever get.
The only other thing that he’s been in court for was for a restraining order motion, which was denied. That isn’t proof he didn’t do anything, as if you read the judge’s summary it’s very clear they *were not* judging the merits of the claims. The restraining order was denied because, in the view of that Judge, the two were unlikely to see each other again anyway, and there wasn’t a need to put in an order to potentially have the police enforce separation.
What Clevinger did isn’t the same, and his reactions to being accused aren’t in the same ballpark either (a big part of why Bauer got the biggest punishment is that he went and leaked his accuser’s name and slandered her on social media, instead of shutting up about it as MLB told him to).
Still, I can’t help but think that if George Steinbrenner was alive, Bauer would be wearing a Yankees uniform right now.
@HalosHeavenJJ “In Trevor’s case there were multiple women and MLB’s investigation led to the longest domestic abuse suspension in history.”
Cool man. How many of them credible?
@HighOnPineTar So you played with him before?
@Col_chestbridge Why shouldn’t he leak her name? Either both of the accuser and the accused should get to remain anonymous until someone is convicted of something or neither of them.
Trevor is that you?
Why do patriots dislike women?
What a dumb comment that adds nothing to the conversation, you are more than welcome too discuss the issue, but try to make an actual point rather than silly personal attacks, but this is the internet after all so I won’t hold my breath.
Mike Clevinger is still a great pitcher. He’d be the second best starter on the Mets right now. Stearns should of scooped him up when Montas got hurt. But ofcourse, he signs Overton, a guy that you never heard of. The season is going to be Overton at this rate with the way this rotation is looking
No, he’s not great at all. The article outlines his performance pretty well and it is decidedly cromulent.
Does this mean that their window is closing?
Still great? When was he ever great?
If you care to look at 2017-2020 his stats are pretty TOR like for 4 years.
Heard he recruited Bauer too. Definitely will improve only 110 losses this season
Report coming in…major, major, major report!
I just $#!+ myself.
Oh, look at that, Mike Clevinger signed!
Remember when Clevinger was covered by the media like he was the Next Big Thing a few years back?
I wonder if he will ever re-gain his peak form and convert that into like 1 year/$15M or 2 years/$25M etc. or if he’ll be a journeyman quadruple-A player with some kind of pro-rated split contract the rest of his career.
Trouble has followed this guy. Undoubtedly talented but has lacked the makeup to get to that next step. He seems more destined to fade into obscurity than realize his dwindling potential, and at age 34 his prime is well behind him.
Kluber was the gem from that era of CLE pitchers and he was basically done by 35.
I for one never heard about Clevinger’s off the field troubles and am thankful for that… please don’t fill me in on it.
I like the signing for the White Sox, I always thought Clevenger would bounce back after his injury. If he can find his game, he could fit in nicely with the Sox over the next few seasons.
Don’t stop now boys. Mr. Reinsdorf please sell the team. Terrible brand of baseball. Ask the Southside. Fans might not attend home games at MLB price.
There are vampires in baseball. Old demons that will not die yet continue to suck the life out of prospects and ball clubs. We know who they are. Broken down unproductive players who are tiresome old narcissists who refuse to move along with dignity.
Getz continues to make the same mistakes.
How is this a mistake? The team is in a full rebuild and they bring in a veteran starter on a minors deal. This is exactly the type of move a rebuilding club should make.
Every team is in need of pitching.
And he’s been a good teammate and fan friendly during his 2 stints with the Sox. Why he seems to have an open invitation back.
