The Tigers made their biggest strike of the offseason last night, agreeing to terms with right-hander Jack Flaherty on a two-year deal that allows him to opt back into free agency at season’s end. He’ll be paid $25MM in 2025 and has a $10MM player option for the 2026 season (that increases to $20MM if he makes 15 starts). Even with that fairly pricey pact in place, the Tigers aren’t closing the door on the other marquee free agent they’ve been chasing. ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Detroit still in pursuit of third baseman Alex Bregman even after signing Flaherty. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press hears the same, writing that the Tigers have “conducted their offseason moves around their interest in signing Bregman,” ultimately passing on several right-handed bats in whom they also had interest (Christian Walker, switch-hitter Anthony Santander, and Ha-Seong Kim).
With Flaherty on the books, the Tigers’ 2025 payroll projects out to about $142MM, per RosterResource’s estimates. They’re up to $156MM in luxury obligations. That leaves them more than $50MM shy of the franchise-record $200MM player payroll and $85MM shy of the $241MM tax threshold. There’s room to accommodate Bregman, be it on a higher-annual value short-term deal with opt-outs or on the type of long-term, six- or seven-year pact he’s been seeking throughout free agency. The only Tigers guaranteed any salary beyond the 2025 season are Flaherty and infielders Colt Keith and Javier Baez. It’s possible — if not likely — that Flaherty will turn down that player option and head back to the market. Baez owed $25MM in 2025 and $24MM in both 2026-27. Keith is owed just over $24MM total through the 2029 season.
Suffice it to say, there’s ample long-term payroll space available if the Tigers decide that a late agreement with Bregman is the optimal finishing piece to an active winter. Adding Bregman would likely mean optioning top prospect Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo to begin the season, but he’d be a depth option at either third or second in the event of an injury to Bregman or fellow free agent signee Gleyber Torres. Matt Vierling would presumably spend the bulk of his time in right field, though he could spell Bregman at the hot corner when he needs a breather or perhaps gets a rest day at designated hitter.
Any deal between the Tigers and Bregman would surely be the largest pact ever issued under president of baseball operations Scott Harris. In two-plus years on the job — a portion of it still at least partially in rebuild mode — Harris hasn’t gone beyond a two-year guarantee for a free agent. Flaherty and Kenta Maeda are the only two free agents Detroit has signed for two years under Harris, and no free agent has received more than Flaherty’s $35MM guarantee. The Tigers went six years on their extension with Keith, but he’d yet to even make his MLB debut and received a $28.6425MM guarantee.
Bregman reportedly has multiple six-year offers — one from the Astros (valued at at least $156MM) and one from another interested party that is said to contain an opt-out after year one. The Blue Jays have been suggested as the other team, though it’s not expressly clear that they’ve done so (nor is the value of the other six-year offer known). Beyond the Astros, Tigers and Jays, both the Cubs and Red Sox have been involved in Bregman’s market. Bruce Levine of 670 The Score in Chicago reports that as of yesterday afternoon, the Cubs are still in active talks with Bregman’s camp as well. That’s not really a new development, of course, but it’s further indication that none of the five clubs reported to be in pursuit of Bregman has fully backed down as of yet.

I’d also like to see a Cubs “reunion” with Dylan Cease and David Robertson to seal up the NL Central and a possible first round playoff bye along with the Dodgers.

wrong piece…it will be a bad contract
CubsIn25
Wasn’t a big fan of the Cubs allocating funds toward Bregman, but with him still lingering and the northsiders needing a TOR pitcher, another veteran bullpen piece, and one more big bat, I’m starting to think adding Bregman would be good at this point.

Great signing Tigers….!
Our Lousy GM shapiro and his lackie in Toronto signed scherzer….LOL

Bregman fatigue

Without checking dimensions, I feel like Tiger stadium would eat up a lot of HRs Bregman was able to hit in Houston. Still a great defender and OBP guy, but I could see Bergman’s power getting sapped in Detroit.
The Natural
Agree with this assessment. Is the situation at 3rd really all that bad in Detroit? Vierling and Jung? How much do you truly gain with Bregman? Harris knows what he’s doing folks.
Diabetic Rockstar
It’s not necessarily about upgrading 3B per se. The entire team has crazy positional flexibility, something Hinch loves, and Bregman even fits that mold. The team’s biggest weakness is right handed hitting, or hitting lefties in general. Torres effectively replaces Torkelson as lineup regular, so they haven’t “added” a RH bat to the lineup that would have LH’s Keith, Carpenter, Greene, Meadows, Jung, Sweeney and SH Perez, who is a natural lefty.
Combine that with an overall lack of veteran presence–Vierling at 27y was the elder statesman–and Bregman checks a ton of boxes.
There is also a defensive element to it. Jung is a natural 2B and was only average defensively there. Keith was already moved to 1B cuz of defensive concerns. Sweeney at SS is above average but his bat is still an unknown. Baez at this point is a lost cause.
Vierling his good at 3B, but him in RF gives Tigers one of best defensive OFs in the game with Meadows in CF and Greene in LF. Having a ++ defender like Bregman at 3B makes entire team’s defense better, and more balanced.
There are absolutely concerns about the size of left field in DET. That would effect a guy like Alonso or Santander more than Bregman, however, as Bregman’s always been a line drive guy with power, fitting the approach of guys with success at Comerica Park like JD Martinez, Nick Castellanos, Ian Kinsler, Torii Hunter, Magglio Ordonez and even Miggy, all guys with 20-30 HR (or higher) potential that raked in DET and it’s doubles friendly dimensions.
It’s a signing that is almost a perfect match.
But Tigers have seen too many long deals like V-Mart, Miggy, Zimmerman, Baez et al age poorly and have a much more fiscally responsible (or cheap) ownership versus 10, 15 years ago.
A 4 year pact is perfect to me as Tigers fan. A 5 year pact is understandable to get it done. I don’t really like idea of a 6th year.
❤️ MuteButton
@BCleveland. His OBP tanked badly last year. He drew half his normal number of average walks. I do agree with your assessment of his power though. Lots of soft fly outs will happen off his bat in Detroit.
BCleveland3381
Yeah I did see that. I could see that being an outlier, but it’s definitely a cause for some concern, especially if a bigger park were to take away even 10-15% of his power numbers.
Yankee Clipper
I guess it depends on their CF camera. He seemed to really take some steps forward when he knew what pitches were coming.
dsett75
While it’s not a HR hitters park, Bregman isn’t a power hitter anyway. It’s conducive to gap power and is ok for BA stats. Bregmans doubles and triples would do well here. He doesn’t hit enough HR’s so it’d take away no more than 5. Having said that, I don’t want him for more than 4 years regardless. I wouldn’t care if it was little league dimensions.
Never Remember
Tigers should go all in and sign Bregman Alonso and Pivetta. Just punt on one draft.
chasfh 2
Clearly not a Tigers fan here.
dsett75
They don’t need Pivetta anymore, but could afford Alonso and Bregman. Especially with Alonso willing to accept a shorter deal apparently. That’d never happen though unless Mike Ilitch was still alive.
dsett75
Not a bad lineup
CF Meadows
LF Greene
3B Bregman
DH Alonso
RF Carpenter
2B Torres
1B Keith
C. Rogers
SS Sweeney/Baez
TroyVan
What a staff they will have. Plus, plenty of depth.

Multiple 6 year deals? I find that highly unlikely. This is a typical ploy used by Boras. When he doesn’t get the overpay he wants he always falls back to high AAV with opt outs. Haven’t we seen this before, like multiple times?
Acoss1331
The way things are going, Boras clients are going to need to take these high AAV short-term deals, like Bellinger and Montgomery did last season.
Never Remember
You do know most of his clients already signed multi year hundreds of million dollar contracts right? Why are you stuck in this myth that things have turned out poorly for any of his clients this year?
Karensjer
Heck yes! Just figure out some way to get Bregman, Keith, and Jung in the lineup, as well as Torkelson if he hits. Perhaps slide Baez into a utility role, and if he hits, trade him, if not, just release him. You owe it to fans to get him off of the books and sign some stars like Bregman. Not too keen on the Flaherty signing, but at least there is an opt out.
terry g
Releasing Baez would not get him off the books. He would still be owed $24M a year through ’27. A trade might save you some of that, heavy on the might.
dsett75
The Flaherty deal was an outstanding deal for Detroit. 1 year for a solid #2, basically. He was pegged to get 5/100 maybe. He’ll opt out and we’ll get a draft pick next year. If he makes 15 starts, we get him for 20 mil. If he doesn’t, we get him for 10. Either way, Detroit is covered as well as a team can be. Especially with what even back end guys are getting.

Bregman should come to Baltimore
There are two Horse Race Tracks near OPACY
There are no Thoroughbred Tracks near Detroit
So,, there is that to consider!

tigerdoc616
Not so sure I agree with the pundits that the Tigers are still in on Bregman. None of us know what the team can afford to spent, so it is all speculation whether or not they can afford to add Bregman. That $200M payroll included Mike Ilitch kicking in $40M of his own money. If Forbes Business of Baseball is even remotely accurate, the Tigers have not been very profitable the past decade even with low payroll.
Plus, pure speculation that he has multiple 6 year offers. If he does, might just be two and while technically two is multiple, multiple implies at least 3. Also not convinced that Bregman wants to come to Detroit. The longer this drags on the longer I think he is just using Detroit to leverage other interested suitors. As a Tigers fan, would I be happy if the team signed Bregman? Sure would. The Flaherty deal however seems like it puts us out on Bregman. We had 11 starters on the 40 man roster before the Flaherty signing. We had more than enough starting pitching. Adding Flaherty does not seem like it was a real need. Seems more like a decision to bolster an already strong pitching staff to overcome some offensive deficiencies. Trying to win 4-3 and 3-2 games rather than 6-4 and 7-5.
Jubilation
The Tigers definitely needed another Frontline starter. Flaherty slides into the #2 spot behind Skubal.olson and Cobb are your #3-4 guys.
As for the rest of the guys.
Jobe: Has the most upside and no doubt Detroit wants him in the rotation. His control could refined a bit though.
Maeda: was awful in the rotation. Barely decent out of the pen.
Montero: He was either really good or really bad. Control is his issue.
Mize: his stuff was better than ever. The results were mediocre. Chance he gets converted to the pen.
Manning: his stuff is diminished. Struggles to stay healthy.
Madden: Decent enough but nothing that pops out watching him or in the numbers.
Hurter: Stands out as a lefty. Good stuff. Did well as a bulk bullpen arm.
It should be a great battle for the #5. You would not want to go into a playoff relying on Cobb as your #2 but as a 3-4 SP it looks a lot better.
dsett75
I think he’ll go to either Houston or Toronto. I don’t think we offered more than them. Which is cool with me. I wouldn’t want him for more than 4.
stanton100
These two smugs (Flaherty & Bregman) on one team is a dream. Only have to avoid watching Detroit. Trade Altuve to the Tigers and I’ll pi$$ myself!
Sorinotsori
I don’t care who I just love seeing teams actually try to win. Pittsburgh, Miami, Tampa, etc… are such a waste and they refuse to bring in any talent to plug massive roster holes
Braves_saints_celts
The rays? Lmao they literally just signed ha-seong Kim. And everybody knows that they are a low spending team. They don’t have a choice. Yet time and time again they make the playoffs and have an average pitcher on other teams turn into superstars with them. Miami and Pittsburgh sure, but adding Tampa in this discussion is out of line!
Ralphus_JPS
Cool! Go get Bregman Tigers! It would be nice to see Detroit compete again! I’m pulling for them. As a Braves fan, I’m still waiting for that blockbuster from AA to get King and Cease onto the team. Holding my breath………
Braves_saints_celts
You and me both buddy!
Old York
Hilarious! Tigers’ willingness to commit a massive contract to a player whose best years may be behind him continue. Should be fun having another Baez in the lineup.
dsett75
We didn’t offer more than Houston or Toronto, I’m guessing. He’s not coming here. And that’s fine with me because I wouldn’t want anything longer than 4. I’m excited we got our #2 with such a short commitment.
Captainmike1
Bergman must be hoping they will give him a dumb deal like they gave jack
For Love of the Game
“Bergman” is looking for a lot more than a one year deal plus an option and opt out. Haven’t you been keeping up? As a Tiger fan and partial season ticketholder (skipped most of the very leans years), I love the Flaherty deal. Lots of ways to win, and already won by getting Sweeney and Liranzo from the Dodgers last summer.
dsett75
Detroit cleaned up with Flaherty. Especially with what even back end guys are getting. Basically a year. He’ll opt out after and refuse the QO. Detroit covered themselves as much as a team could. Dude was predicted for 5/100.
rememberthecoop
Bruce is a mouthpiece for the organization. The Cubs aren’t going to sign Bregman. They are only there in case he takes a short-term offer. But why would he if his Astros have a 5 year deal on the table and he reportedly has longer offers out there. It’s not gonna happen.
RotiniRick
Pecota projections are out and they have the Tigers under .500 and 4th in the division.
christaylormvp
THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! THE TIGERS ARE SIGNING EVERYBODY!
Mikenmn
I thought (from the Opener) that Detroit-Bregman talks were at a “standstill”? Someone is going to spend a lot of money on a 31-year old who’s walk rate tanked last year. Might work out, but the back end of the contract is going to be unhappy.
mtb703
Skip Bregman, and spend on Vlad next year.
