Reports surfaced back in December that the Mets were looking into the possibility of a Starling Marte trade, and were willing to eat some of Marte’s $19.5MM salary. The Athletic’s Will Sammon reported today that the Mets “did not come especially close to” moving Marte, though some teams did check in about the possibility and some discussions took place.
Marte shared his own take on the process with Sammon, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, and other reporters today at the Mets’ spring camp, revealing that the team was in contact with him about trade possibilities. “They spoke to me before the [Juan Soto] signing, and then after the signing, they reiterated that they would try to move me,” Marte said. “They were very clear, very honest with me up front. They obviously want the best for this team, but also the best for my future. They were really helpful, and they were really transparent about the situation.”
The Mets have yet to tell Marte whether or not a trade might still happen, Sammon writes, though the possibility looks increasingly less likely now that Spring Training is underway. As a result, Marte is penciled in for part-time duty at best, slated to mostly work as a backup outfielder and as the team’s DH whenever a left-handed starter is on the mound. Marte has offered to also chip in as a center fielder, even if he has played just three games at the position in the last three seasons, and with Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor seemingly having things covered up the middle.
Regardless, Marte’s willingness to return to his old position underscores his desire to help the Mets win, even if he’s receiving less playing time than usual.
“Whenever you’re with a team for the amount of time I’ve been with the team, you get comfortable, you don’t want to get traded because you’ve created relationships with the staff, the players, everybody around here,” Marte said. “But at the same time, any baseball player would love to play every single day because that’s how a player gets reps, gets better day in and day out. But at the same time, I’m here and I’m going to do the best I can do.”
While his four-year, $78MM contract is (incredibly) barely a tenth of Soto’s megadeal, it wasn’t long ago that Marte was a prized free agent contract in his own right, joining the Mets in the 2021-22 offseason. He delivered an All-Star performance in the first year of that deal, even if a fractured finger prematurely ended his regular season and hampered him during the Mets’ playoff run. The finger issue proved to be a harbinger for the next two seasons, as Marte battled a number of different health issues and played in 180 of a possible 324 games, while hitting .258/.314/.357 with 12 home runs in 711 plate appearances.
Most of those struggles were focused into the 2023 season, as Marte had a more respectable 104 wRC+ in 370 PA in 2024. As DiComo noted, Marte had some pretty sharp splits last season with the bulk of his production coming against southpaws, so a more specialized role against mostly left-handed pitching could help Marte become an impact bat even in a limited capacity.
Of course, Marte might well earn himself more at-bats the better he hits, or he could get more playing time if injuries strike any of New York’s other outfielders. To that end, Brandon Nimmo dealt with plantar fasciitis in his left foot for much of the 2024 season, and he told Sammon and Tim Britton that he received a PRP injection to deal with the problem over the offseason.
The early returns in camp are promising, as Nimmo estimated he was moving at 91 percent of his top speed during a running drill on Friday. The plan is to ramp up relatively slowly during the spring, with Nimmo again planning to wait until the first week of March to start playing in games. If all goes as expected, Nimmo felt he should be ready for Opening Day.
Angels
I hope Marte gets a chance to play for another team on a full-time basis.
But I suspect the Mets won’t find a taker – even if they offer to pay a large amount of this last year of his deal. They have Tyrone Taylor to split time with Siri in CF and generally a 4th OF, McNeil too, and some pups in the minors.
I am not convinced Nimmo’s plantar fasciitis will resolve itself. Sometimes these injuries take a year, sometimes (example, Jay Bruce) they require some surgery (I am not a doctor).
Met fans could see more of Starling Marte than they’re expecting.
How ’bout them A’s? Or Rays?
I can’t imagine any team giving him a full-time role. His age, inability to stay healthy, poor defense, and inability to hit RH starters last year (.591 OPS) limit him to a platoon DH, or 5th OF/PR role.
But he still hits lefties, so for now, the team is better off with him at a platoon DH than leaving Winker alone in that role. If or when one of the BAM (Baty-Acuna-Mauricio) trio emerges as a candidate to play 3B regularly (or even platoon), Marte should be dealt and Vientos can spend some time at DH.
Tokyo Giants
The Mets have too many outfielders on the roster. Someone needs to be moved.
… to DH. And that would be Marte & Winker.
Isn’t Soto their full-time DH?
No. He’s the full time RF. That’s why Marte is out of a position spot.
Matte plays a much better outfield than Soto, who likely should simply be slotted in as DH. The Yankees would have been better off with Soto as their DH but Stanton was inked into that spot.
@A NYer That used to be true, but not anymore. Marte’s OF defense grades out worse than Soto’s now, by a fairly significant margin.
The Mets should eat most of the money and trade him to the Pirates. Seems like the right thing to do for everyone involved.
He actually would have been a good add on here, and a nice way to end his career where he began. And with Cutch. Wouldn’t matter that he’s not the player he once was—he’d still be one of the best they’d have
But with a carpetbagging owner, he’d rather go the cheapest route possible. As always.
MrMuyBueno
Cherington is holding out for the Mets to pay almost all of his salary.
Probably
Wouldn’t surprise me, panj341
They’ll shell out $10M for a closer last year—a luxury when a .500 team already had an All Star closer—but will avoid doing something that makes sense in building around their pitching staff
How not to run a ballclub.
Any JD Martinez rumors?
I’m kind of in the mindset that he’s in a Brandon belt situation. Forced into retirement because the league simply doesn’t need you anymore, even though you might still have a bit left in the tank.
Not sure how much he has left in the tank. He really nose-dived in the second half last season and you could see his bat was slower. Yeah, we can blame the lack of spring training, and he might bounce back a little. But there really isn’t much value there.
Yeah especially being a dh only player. He might get a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, but even then, being as old as he is, his declining numbers, 2 years in a row of limited spring action, at that point I’d willingly hang them up. But I don’t know his mindset, I’m pretty sure it’s really hard to call it quits on something you’ve done ever since you were a kid, that you love and is literally a part of you. Damn the money. I feel for him, but yeah it’s time to call it, the league just doesn’t have a place for him.
Last year it was reported that if the Mets deal hadn’t come along, he was going to retire rather than take a minor league deal. But this year, he’s decided he has an axe to grind. he blames analytics and computers for freezing out 30+ RH hitters who only play the corners or DH. He’s in denial about weak he looked late last season. Maybe he’s better off starting the season in June after taking a late deal to replace an injured player.
My guess is his back was more of a factor than he let on. Hopefully he’s ok now and just waiting for an injury/guarantee as compared to just signing for an invite.
Its a possibility. But when the back issues first surfaced last year, he’d said that he’d had these issues before. So even if it was the back, a team would have to consider that the problem could still come back, and possibly even worse. I mean. all he was doing was DHing, and he wasn’t even doing it full time those last two months. What can a team do to better manage it this year? Give him two full months to ramp up in the minors before calling him up? Platoon him the whole way?
Marte is an interesting case. He’s not a useless player where they’re just going to cut bait for his roster spot. He still serves a function as he hits left-handed pitching extremely well and can platoon with Winker at DH. He can also pinch hit and occasionally play in the outfield. It’s not optimal roster construction, but not the end of the world either. Still, I can see a move happening sooner than later.
If he is limited to PA against LHP, starts against every LHP at some positions, and he is healthy a full year, he will get around 200 PA.
If the young RH Giants outfielders (Encarnacion, Matos and Luciano) don’t secure jobs during Spring Training, SF could do worse than to bring Marte in to platoon with Yaz, Meckler or McCray for a year.
The bad news on that score is that neither Marte or Winker should ever go near the OF again (even the inanimate Statcast heaves at their fielding), leaving the Mets with a platoon at DH between Winker, who is still reasonably good at the plate against RHP with enough speed to take advantage of his very good OBP and Marte, who at 36 projects to be a below average hitter even against LHP. MLBTR should know by now that one season platoon splits are irrelevant, particularly when we have more than a decade of splits available in Marte’s case.
It’s with good reason that teams never platoon at DH with players who are only ‘break glass in case of emergency’ guys in the field. It leaves you with only three backups: catcher, one IFer, one OFer. The Mets might try to squeak by for a few weeks with McNeil’s ability to play the OF, letting them fake an extra backup, but it’s no way to play a season.
There’s also the opportunity cost of losing the DH through which to rotate your regulars for 40-50 games over the year against lefties.
I’ll be very surprised if Marte’s still on the Mets on OD. They should move him even if they have to eat $18.5m. In fact, since he’s a sunk cost, they should DFA him and go with their best 26-man roster as of OD if they can’t unload him.
The problem is how every team caters to the pitcher who forced teams to carry too many by overthrowing instead of pitching. Part of the blame goes to the league as well due to their ownership in Rawlings with how the ball is made. Finally, using maple bats instead of ash has enhanced a hitter’s exit velo.
I can see Marte getting traded but everything I’ve seen has supported that he’s hit left-handed pitching pretty well. I don’t think it’s a perfect scenario though, and leaves the Mets a lot less versatile on the bench to carry him and winker.
Btw, Marte doesn’t have to be useless to warrant being cut for his roster spot—he just has to be less valuable than the alternative.
True. And for the moment, there doesn’t seem to be an alternative. That could change if one of the kids emerges at some point in the year. Perhaps Baty comes up in May and hits RHers but still struggles with lefties. he could play 3B vs RH, with Vientos moving to the DH spot on thsoe days. Vs LH, Vientos would go back to 3rd, Winker to DH. Marte is then completely expendable.
when yankees told stroman he might not have a starting job, he rejected the idea of it and stopped showing up
when starling was told he wont have a starting job he says “I’m here and I’m going to do the best I can do.”
thats the difference betw a professional and an immature child
Perhaps there is the answer: trade Marte to the Yankees for Stroman
N – F – W !
Mets already did that nightmare.
Only my opinion, and there’s another thread on that guy nearby, but Stroman seems to burn bridges everywhere he goes.
Only my opinion.
Stroman often burns bridges while he’s still on the bridge.
Stroman was never told he would not have a starting job. He also never stopped showing up. He is in camp now.
That is the difference between facts and opinion.
Don’t let facts get in the way of commenting on MLB Trade Rumors dot com!
Marte already did the immature thing in Pittsburgh a long time ago.
He learned something since then. Stroman…not so much.
I rooted for Marte here in Pittsburgh
The local TV Pirates broadcast station did a feature on how and where he grew up in the Dominican Republic. Almost unimaginable to live in such poverty and squalor
I’m not excusing anything Marte might have done in any way but as you say, he matured as a human being
Expensive but perhaps Marte can be productive in a part time role. Was clutch in postseason. NYM do have a bit of a roster crunch but it’s among the infield prospects
Soto, Nimmo, Siri, Taylor, Marte. 5 OF with room on the roster for 4. They don’t have an OF knocking on the door other than Williams who is not going to come in at SS, so keeping Marte is not a bad idea. Just an expensive one.
Please… I’m not knocking Williams. But he isn’t anywhere near knocking on the door. He’s thus far put up sub-par numbers in AA, and mediocre ones in the AFL which is a mixd-bag level of competition. You can try and blame his injury. But regardless of why he didn’t perform, he still has to show he can do it there before they move him up to AAA, never mind the majors.
Again, not knocking him. He was the youngest player in the EL last year, and one of the very youngest in all of AA. He needs more time. Plus, Acuna is ahead of him and played about 25% of his games in the OF last year. He’ll get that shot before Williams.
Last time I checked, Syracuse was in AAA.
Oh, cut it out. The AA season ends a week earlier than AAA now. Syracuse was long since eliminated and in garbage time. So they moved him up0 for that week. But sending him there was purely a procedural move just to get him some more ABs. Not an earned promotion.
Even if he were to open the season in ‘Cuse, the reality is that prospects – even good ones – don’t just magically jump from AAA to the majors in only half a season unless they are truly exceptional superstars in the making. And when they do get promoted, they usually struggle in the majors and shuttle back and forth a few times before finally sticking and holding a job.
Again, not knocking Jett. But his poor performances in AA to date demonstrate that he doesn’t walk on water, and he will go through some learning curves as he gets promoted.
the kid is still young (very young as American-born players go), and has only 86 total games above the LOW-A level. Let this wine breathe a little.
I say keep him…his intangibles are incredible…on another note the young position players we have on the farm and are chomping at the bit is impressive…it’s been a long time coming✌️❤️
Marte to the Phillies for Tiajuan Walker and cash? lol. One bad contract for another. Phils can use a right handed bat in the OF and the Mets rotation could use depth.
The only issue is Walker stinks. Or at least he has been terrible recently. Maybe he’s light out in the spring and the Phils can find a team desperate enough to trade for him.
T Walker was a Met, he was not offered a contract and was signed as a free agent by the Phillies. Interesting, but probably not coming back to the Mets.
Incredible year from Walker. The Phillies aren’t usually a badly run team except that they sent Walker out for 19 games, 83 innings, even though he had to be about the worst pitcher in baseball who got more than 50 innings. 7.10 ERA, 6.94 FIP—how was he not suffering an injury all that time?
1.7 whip, 2.6 hr/9, 11.5 hits per 9… the Phillies’ FO tried to play themselves out of the division title, but the team was just too good.
Nope. Not. No way man.
nick, Acquiring Marte wouldn’t be the worst thing the Phils could do. Marte could platoon in center and, when he’s healthy, he can be very productive offensively and defensively. The question is how much of his salary would the Mets be willing to eat. For the Phils to sign him, the Mets would have to send a boatload of cash. This could be a story to watch as spring training gets underway.
Marte’s CF days are over for the most part
bill, Maybe so, but he’s offered to play center field for the Mets this season. He wouldn’t make such an offer if he felt he would be embarrassed playing the position. Considering who the Phils currently have lined up to play the outfield, Marte would most likely be an upgrade over everyone but Castellanos. It’s a shame the Phils derailed Rojas’ career by rushing him to the bigs before he was ready. He could have been something special with the right training and given the ability to make mistakes and learn from them at the minor league level.
Pirates should still go for him even though they wasted $ on Pham. He could play some OF, DH, pinch hit and be an asset in the clubhouse.
Better yet, trade Pham and a prospect for him.
Well, they keep talking about moving Reynolds to 1st base so here’s the opportunity. Especially with Horwitz gone a couple months
But it makes too much sense for the Pirates
Nimmo estimates he is at 91%? Ninety one percent. Do reporters not know when someone is feeding them a line of BS?
Are they saying that Marte will get less than 370 PA this season because he will be limited to playing against LHP? That is about right for a guy that had an 78 OPS+ vs RHP over the past 2 seasons and can’t play defense anymore. It was nice that he offered to play CF, but we all know he can’t. The last time he was better than average in CF was 2018. He was a relatively good RF in 2022, but he will not displace Soto there 2025.
With the DH now in both leagues maybe they can rotate Soto/Nimmo/Marte through LF/RF/DH. Marte DHs against tough LHPs but if they want to give Soto a break from the field and just hit then it’s Marte RF, Soto DH. Could also play a good amount of left field as Nimmo is starting to get up there, and we know he’s been pretty fragile throughout his career. DHing or even platooning him could help save his legs for the long haul.
They are saying he will be limited to hitting against LHP. That is about 200 PA a season if he is healthy all season and starts against all of the ones the Mets will face.
Loved that he said 91%. Lol.
“It’s a progression,” Nimmo said. “You want to just keep stacking good days and not have a setback. As long as you’re able to get more load on it each and every day, it will be in a better spot.”
@web — if you listened to the interview these things are measured to the 2nd decimal so 91% was him rounding off.
No. Nimmo did not estimate that he is at 91%. You read it wrong. (To be fair, they did not explain it well). What Nimmo has said is that the next step in the progression is for him to ramp up his running to 91% of his normal speed. Not a line of bull. This stuff is done with the trainers monitoring him with video and computers and telling him how fast to go.
This is something the Rockies should be looking into. Taking on salaries and maybe collecting a prospect or two with them. Something like Marte = cash + a prospect for someone like Sean Bouchard. The Rockies would have a veteran to cover for the inevitable Kris Bryant injury that could be flipped at the deadline for another prospect or two.
Obviously you want Soto’s bat in the lineup everyday but despite being a decade younger his defense is pretty equivalent to Marte’s anyway so do you really need Soto in the field everyday? Just platoon the two in RF and have Soto DH against lefties instead of playing the field. This isn’t a bad problem to have nor is it a situation that needs a complex solution. It’s a very expensive and unnecessary issue but I for one am entirely unconcerned about how Cohen chooses to spend his money.
Three-quarters of a billion dollars — to platoon?
Make it make sense.
Buckner – re-read what he said. He did not say that Soto should platoon. He said that Soto should platoon in the FIELD and DH on those days that Marte plays. So he would still be in the lineup every day, just not in the OF.
I know how to read; Jeff
@ jimmyz – yeah but – what’s the point? If you’re not getting better defense by using Marte in the field, then why play him there? What do you gain? All you do is risk having the very fragile Marte getting injured yet again.
@geofft that’s a fair point. I suppose more than anything it would just be to give Soto extra rest from playing the field throughout the year. The reality is that effectively instead of having their 5th OF stashed in AAA the Mets are carrying him on their bench. For what it’s worth I’ve was at a game a couple years ago where two different players in the same game tagged up from first and took second base on fly balls to Soto which I’ve never seen anyone even try to do against anyone before or since. I haven’t seen Marte play much in recent years to see how much his defense has deteriorated though.
As limp as Soto’s defense is, he’s nowhere close to Marte, who is unplayable now. They’re even almost identical in foot speed (Soto probably passes him this year), and Marte’s jumps in the field are gone.
Marte’s best feature is a strong, inaccurate arm, whereas Soto’s got an average, very accurate arm, meaning the better arm of the two. You’d much rather have Soto out there.
You’ve just made it complex by suggesting that Marte platoon for Soto. They signed him to be their franchise player over the next 15 years. To occasionally rest him, sure. Marte is not even going to be subbing for Soto as a late innings defensive replacement either. Soto is being paid to play every game and inning.
2024 Statcast—Marte, Winker::
–Fielding Run Value, lowest 7th percentile in MLB; lowest 10th percentile.
–OAA, range: lowest 5th percentile in MLB; lowest 1ST percentile.
And now they’re both six months older. They can’t play the outfield. The Mets aren’t close to stupid enough to think either is even a 5th OFer.
Exactly. The 5th OF will be McNeil, with the bench IF covering 2B on those days. Or perhaps Acuna, if he makes the team.
Marte is still a great hitter and extremely clutch. His problems are that hes always injured and his fielding is bad. He fits perfectly in a platoon with Winker for DH. Nimmo gets hurt a lot too so he can always fill in for him there
Marte had a .591 OPS against right-handed starters. He’s only great(?) against LHers, and they represent only 29% of the starting pitchers.
Meh. A lot of his fly balls now die on the warning track. The power is gone.
If the Mets are willing to eat $19 Million, they can call the penny-pinching Twins.
Cohen ate way more than that amount releasing Robinson Cano.
If Stroman didn’t burn bridges in Queens it would work for a one for one. But if and buts.
Marte is a great teammate.
Stroman has the Stro Show.
It doesn’t because the Mets need optionable players their roster is too tied up with veterans already.
At the very least his comments show that he understands the game. I gained some respect for those comments. He didn’t bring up the past, just the present and future. Always liked him as a player, so best of luck to Marte.
Too bad his contract is stupid high $20M! Even paid down I think no team considers taking him until he’s proven healthy as he had issues last season. He’ll either go mid season or at the deadline for nothing or get released part way thru the season for a very expensive roster spot used to shuffle relievers.
Marte is a class act & his statement proves it. I don’t want to see him go but if you can get prospects back & open up roster spot to bring Iglesias back, another class act & a clubhouse positive.
