The Cardinals’ offseason has been defined by their attempts to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado. The club allowed key players like Paul Goldschmidt, Kyle Gibson, and Andrew Kittredge to head into free agency this winter and did nothing to replace them as they focused on cutting payroll and starting a youth movement at the major league level. The club seemingly wanted to pair that with trades of some of its most expensive veteran players, but Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras both quickly made it clear that they weren’t interested in waiving their no-trade clauses.
That left Arenado as the most prominent trade candidate on the roster, but the third baseman vetoed a trade to the Astros at the eleventh hour back in December and his market began to dry up rapidly after that. The final nail in the coffin appeared to be the Red Sox, Arenado’s last serious known suitor, signing Alex Bregman to round out their infield mix. Now, with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak admitting it’s likely Arenado remains in St. Louis to start the season, the Cardinals are poised to enter 2025 with the most notable change as compared to last year’s team being a lack of Goldschmidt at first base.
There’s one way the Cardinals could inject some more youth into the roster and create space in the payroll: trading from the rotation. Both Gray and veteran righty Miles Mikolas have no-trade clauses and appear unlikely to waive them, but veteran starters Erick Fedde and Steven Matz are both pending free agents who lack no-trade protection. Both players reportedly received interest from rival clubs earlier this offseason, and while the Cardinals at the time appeared focused on dealing Arenado rather than from the rotation, the unlikelihood of an Arenado trade could change that calculus.
As MLBTR’s Steve Adams explored for Front Office subscribers earlier this week, there are a number of teams around the league that could still use starting pitching help. Fedde in particular could likely bring back an enticing return as a relatively affordable rental starter who posted a 3.30 ERA and 3.86 FIP in 31 starts last year. The right-hander will make just $7.5MM in 2025, a sum that virtually any team could afford even during this late stage of the offseason. Matz is less likely to bring back significant talent in return given his up-and-down trajectory over the years, but shedding some of his $12MM salary for 2025 would allow the Cardinals to add a veteran reliever to set up for closer Ryan Helsley or even take on a bit more money to try and facilitate the Arenado deal with a cash-strapped club like the Yankees. (The Cardinals’ reluctance with regard to trading Helsley, also an impending free agent, is another curious decision, as highlighted by MLBTR’s Anthony Franco last month.)
In addition to the prospects and/or salary relief trading a veteran starter could net, the Cardinals would also more clearly make way for their young arms to get work at the big league level. Top prospect Tink Hence has yet to make his Triple-A debut but dominated Double-A last year and should be on the big league radar later this year. In the meantime, Michael McGreevy is already knocking on the door of the majors after posting a 1.96 ERA in 23 innings as a starter for the club last year. Sem Robberse, Quinn Mathews and Tekoah Roby are among the potential starting options the Cardinals have at their disposal that don’t currently have a path to major league starts.
On the other hand, none of those options has proven himself in the majors. With Arenado now seemingly unlikely to move, the Cardinals may feel they’re better off trying to contend this year, at least in the first half when they still have the opportunity to pivot back towards selling at the trade deadline. After all, the Cardinals won 83 games last year despite their flawed roster, and a healthy season from Contreras, better batted ball luck from Gray, and a resurgence from Arenado could allow them to contend in an NL Central division that still looks relatively soft even after teams like the Cubs and Reds have made notable moves.
It’s also worth noting that, even without trading Arenado or a starter, the club has made at least some room for a legitimate youth movement to take place. Kicking Willson Contreras over to first base has opened up the catcher position for youngsters Ivan Herrera and Pedro Pages, while the departures of Gibson and Lance Lynn from the rotation have opened up a spot for Andre Pallante after he impressed in a rotation role last year. Other players like Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker figure to get more consistent playing time in 2025, and all it takes is an injury or two to get players like Nolan Gorman and Victor Scott II more regular playing time in the majors as well.
With Opening Day just six weeks away, how do MLBTR readers think the Cardinals should proceed? Should they double down on their youth movement and deal a starter like Fedde or Matz to salvage their offseason of inaction, or should they hold onto their veteran rotation pieces through the early days of the season in hopes that internal improvements could make them a legitimate contender? Have your say in the poll below:
They should either trade a starter or add one, because as currently composed, they’re a very mid team.
A very mid team In a terrible division. No reason to trade a starter at this point. If they had an offer for Matz or Fedde that was worth it, they would have done it. It’s no a rebuild not matter how many times this website wants to characterize it that way.
Exactly Kyle. The site had 7 guys on their top 35 trade candidate list and not one of them has been dealt.
I wont sit here and say I am happy with the direction the team has taken. I would have traded away numerous guys by now. But thats not what the team wants to do despite what Cubs fans want to write.
Agreed. If you have too many hitters and not enough starters it makes sense doing a deal now, but you are trading from weakness. If you have the ‘problem’ of too many starters you are better off waiting.
You may compete and might as well play wait and see because you will get value at the trade deadline if it goes south.
You have no idea how the kids are going to perform and can always use the second half as an audition if things go south or ease them in to the back end if things are going well.
The #1 reason is injuries. The old age of you can never have enough starting pitching usually turns out to be true.
Mozeliak stated he didn’t want to trade any of his players in their final year of control a while back. Very odd. Said it was so Bloom could have more options next year but that doesn’t compute. Is he screwing the team in his last year? Definitely an odd situation. Ownership brought in a new guy, but for next year, while leaving Moz in place.
He’s giving the team a chance to compete in 2025. I agree it’s a weird situation and I wish they would just trade some people but trading them now or in July isn’t that big of a difference.
True. May gain value, may lose value. They have enough talent to stay around 500 which could be contending. Interesting situation to follow. Would like to be a fly on the wall in management meetings.
I don’t think it’s a terrible division anymore. The Cubs made enough improvements to get closer to the Brewers and the Brewers are decent. The Cards are way behind IMO.
Cubs
Brewers
Reds
Cardinals
Pirates
????
The Cubs find ways to lose more games than they should. They certainly did so last year. The Brewers i don’t really think are that good. Cardinals played really poorly against them last year if that changed it could change everything.
Well whatever you say, but on paper the Brewers and Cubs look good. The Cardinals do not.
Pirates
Cards
Cubs
Brewers
Reds
That would be a wild ride!
If not then what are they doing?? Competing with a few ok young guys and old vets past their prime? Helsley and Fedde upcoming free agents. I get not every team likes to wave the white flag like the Chi Sox and Marlins, but lean a bit in one direction at least.
I’ll make it real simple, anyone on the roster who is tradable should be traded. What a bunch of maroons. Ahahahahaha!
“What a bunch of maroons” how ironic
…And off to the Enchanted Kingdom you go jinxy boy. Ahahahahahaha!
I wonder why Gray wouldn’t take a trade to a better team in the area like KC? Kind of interesting that all the no-trade guys said no way. Management should tank just to make sure none of those players have decent numbers and they will want to leave. Harder for Contreras but a pitcher relies on the rest of the team.
John Mozeliak obviously made a mistake in signing Wilson Contreras. Within a month of his signing, Oli Marmol and Mozeliak announced Contreras would not be the starting catcher because his defense and framing.
Now Contreras is being moved to a position he’s never played regularly. Trying to replace a perennial Gold Glove Candidate in Goldschmidt.
Contreras at First …. blocks younger natural first basemen such as Burleson, etc.!!!
This is just as dumb as the season Mozeliak gave Mike Mathaney 4 natural second basemen to fill the 4 starting infield positions!!
They don’t want Willson but he won’t leave. So moving him to first unblocks Herrera at catcher, who is a better bat than Burleson, and unlike Burleson has only 1 position (not including DH).
Burley will still get his at bats as long as he hits.
Contreras is most likely going to be the DH the majority of the time. The stupid part is not at least allowing him to be the backup catcher. That’s just dumb he could easily be the backup catcher he doesn’t have to never catch again.
Arenado to Detroit for maeda and manning. Easy as that.
Cardinals need to just start all over. They’re gonna waste a decade if they keep fooling themselves into thinking they’ve got a competitor.
Arenado won’t waive no trade for Detroit. He is the one making it difficult to trade him. He must want to be a Cardinal or wait until trade deadline.
Mo is constipated. I don’t think he can squeeze one out.
Wondering if they’re rethinking the NTCs for future contracts.
I think this talk of trading Contreras and Gray is made up nonsense. And Arenado had a NTC before he became a Cardinal.
That’s the point of the NTC, there is no talk b/c the players have the right given to them for no-trade. It’s not a possibility…if they player is unwilling. Any rebuild will have to go in spite of them.
To a lesser extent about Arenado, since they inherited that NTC, but it still applies, and it’s shown to be a hindrance considering he’s already blocked one trade (HOU).
Point is: NTCs, at least right now, look like they’re making things very challenging for STL.
They aren’t rebuilding. That’s the point. This site pretends they are rebuilding but they arent.
The only challenge with a NTC has been Arenados and again he had one BEFORE he joined the team. I don’t believe Gray and Contreras refused to waive their NTC i think thats made up.
Contreras and Gray both said they wanted to stay…so in a sense they refused
When did they say that?
They did…I’m not against them staying…and they refused because they wanted to stay and be apart of the future…it wasn’t a bad thing
When did this happen?
“According to recent reports, Sonny Gray has expressed a desire to remain with the St. Louis Cardinals, indicating that he wants to stay a Cardinal despite speculation about potential trades due to the team’s current rebuild phase; he has a no-trade clause in his contract which gives him the power to decide where he plays. ”
“While aware of ongoing challenges, he ultimately decided it was in his best interest to stay put. “I meant it when I said it last year, or a year and a half ago at this point, about us wanting to be here,” said Gray on him and his family.Jan 18, 2025′
“When I said what I said last year, I had a lot of doubts in my mind that I was going to stay here,” said Contreras. “The first call [from Marmol, after that], he said, ‘We don’t want to trade you. We love you here, and we want you to stay here. ‘ I was like, “Yes!”Jan 23, 2025
That doesn’t mean he was asked to be traded and declined. And that’s what has been reported. That first sentence of the second paragraph isn’t a quote that’s a writer making up nonsense.
Again that doesn’t really suggest the team came to Contreras and tried to trade him. It just says he’s happy being a Cardinal and I knew that already because you can see it when he plays.
first off I’m not against you so stop being so defensive…but if you do a simple google search you will see the cardinals would have traded them if they wanted to be traded…they didn’t so they are staying
Gray is owed 65 million and is only under team control for 2 more years. And he’s coming off a sub par year. Who wants him?
Contreras was hurt half of 2024. Another backloaded contract. Who wants him?
The problem is the contract not the NTC. And no i don’t think the team wants to trade them. Maybe Contreras but when you announce you are taking him off his natural position that doesn’t exactly increase his trade value.
They should’ve. Being in limbo is far worse than rebuilding. They’re stuck.
@BITA — Frankly, that’s exactly the type of SP ATL is interested in. Look at Sale, who had money owed, came off 4 injury-marred seasons, and ATL acquired and extended him. ATL was interested in Gray when he signed with STL. Subpar results, but not entirely on him with a lower FiP (3.12) than his ERA (3.84).
Boston paid some of that salary for Sale. And that ended up being a terrible move for Boston.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Gray ends up in Atlanta before his contract is up. But not until July at the earliest. I agree he’s a good fit I just wonder if the Braves want to pay. Cardinals could toss in 20 million and take Waldrep back. I would do that.
@Von — yep, that’s my point. Give away that NTC and you have no choice. They’re not ‘rebuilding’ b/c they can’t with at least 3 NTCs floating around. Not a lot of ammunition to be able to pull triggers.
Yes, they did. But that’s not the point. You asked who would want him. And ATL is a team that loves taking on some dead contracts that would present value, especially if they expire in only a few years, like Sale’s.
ATL gave up Grissom b/c he no longer had a spot and could have broken out. They value pitching and you won’t see them give up an arm with a lot of potential to relive another Wainwright, even for 20M. You also gotta figure Gray more than likely will want to be compensated to waive that NTC, which would benefit STL.
I don’t think the Cardinals want to eat money and not get anything back in return. Why not just keep him like the Red Sox should have done with Sale?
@Joel They absolutely had a player traded in Arenado and he nixed it. As for you thinking wanting to trade Graybis nonsense, here’s a link saying otherwise. FYI it actually quotes Gray himself in the article. It’s not speculation by some goofball such as yourself who makes claims yet never backs them.
si.com/mlb/cardinals/st-louis-cardinals-news/cardi…
Agreed. These deals killed them.
Arenado was also personally visited in the off-season two years ago by the GM. Nolan did not use his opt out, thus five more seasons he committed to. He bought in. Contreras was the flagship addition that offseason. The site and others thought he could get more of a bag at the time opting out.
Yes i think thats a factor in all this like you said the fact that he could have opted out after 2022 and didn’t. Because of that the team really wants to do right by him.
It was an entirely different sort of organization when they handed those out. They thought, ‘who could possibly want to leave here?’ and in most cases they were right.
If they got back 1-2m in the deal by giving players what the Cardinals wouldn’t need, it was free money. Or so they thought.
They clearly should, though it’s a draw to take less money.
The fact that they haven’t trade a starter shows the lie of the whole “reset” or “youth movement.” Instead of trying to improve for ’26 or ’27, they’re going to burn their assets, risking injury, on trying to compete with a team that’s worse than last year’s team. And the reasoning for this halfway approach? Mo doesn’t want to go out with a losing record.
Burn what assets? What prospects can be had now that can’t be had at the deadline? Many teams actually pay more for players at the deadline because by then they know if they are contenders or not. If the Cardinals are 10 back in July they will trade Helsley and Fedde and perhaps more.
Matz already hurt his arm using the remote. Problem solved
They need to trim payroll!
*microwaving popcorn*
The fact that contract-year Fedde is still on this team blows my mind. He’s an obvious trade piece that should fetch some value. Helsley should be gone as well, assuming they can get the king’s ransom they deserve for him.
What exactly do you think Fedde is worth? He’s not bringing back some game changing prospects he’s not that good.
In a world in which Nick Pivetta gets and turns down a ~$21M qualifying offer, Eric Fedde at $7.5M for one year is a bargain. Look at what the Cardinals got for half a season of Jordan Montgomery.
Pivetta screwed up by not accepting the offer. Montgomery was a better pitcher than Fedde. And if a half season of Montgomety is valuable then a half season of Fedde is valuable as well.
@Joel Did you eat lead paint chips as a child?? You constantly bash writers claiming Cubs biased, you fail to accept reality that STL is in a rebuild/reboot, you make false claims and refuse to provide any evidence, etc
So AGAIN I ll ask can you provide a link substantiate your claim Arenado asked to be traded? Please provide a link
True, but after his 2024 results they may be asking too much. That his FIP was significantly worse than his ERA doesn’t help if they’re shooting for the moon. They also might figure they rate to get 80% of his value on a Deadline deal, if they’re out of it.
Hard to say with this Cardinals’ FO, wth they’re thinking.
While I have plenty of disagreements regarding the Cards’ brass, I am willing to give the youngsters a chance. If, and it is a big if, Walker, Gorman, McGreevy, Scott, Saggese, and Herrera all improve considerably, then they have a shot at the division. Outside of Helsley and Romero, the bull pen is a real question. But by mid-season the team will have given the youngsters a chance, and can make decisions on the youth movement. My guess is they will be a .500 team without a lot of answers, but at least the decision making should be clearer.
Yeah it’s not like waiting until midseason is some big tragedy here. The writer is a Cubs fan and he’s rooting against the Cardinals.
Trade Matz, even with little return. Fedde is much more likely to be a useful starter. If there’s an unexpected high offer for Fedde, then trading him is ok, but I’m really dubious about Matz.
Why trade Matz if its only for little return?
Why??? If he stays healthy and pitches decent in the first half he’s definitely worth more in July. So why trade him now?
I don’t think Fedde is worth all that much either.
I think we will see Matz primarily in the bullpen. I also think Fedde will have a good but not great season and will most likely bring something before the trading deadline.
Even Matz doesn’t believe in Matz. 65 innings a year in three years with the Cards, as a starter. 95 ERA+. The Cardinals would have to eat salary to move him, and they wouldn’t get anything back.
One of those cases where, “he’s so bad, we may as well keep him in case he gets lucky.”
I wonder if Sonny would waive the NTC for Atlanta? I’ve read that he didn’t want to be traded because he wanted to stay close to home. ATL is just about the same distance from his Tennessee home as STL.
It is, but I don’t believe Atlanta is able to add that contract to their ledger. They are up against their payroll limit, like many teams.
Royals would have fit earlier in the offseason. Same with Cubs.
I didn’t realize Gray was making so much moulah. I must have confused him with someone else.
Maybe we shouldn’t let Cubs fans write nonsense articles like this. It’s the middle of February. The Cardinals haven’t traded the one guy they actually want to trade. Why would they trade someone else?
Literally posting my second comment ever in 5 years of reading on this site just to point out what a cry baby you are lol my god man. Find some enjoyment in life instead of constantly shaking your fist at everyone and whining about trolls. You literally invite them to mock you with how you act.
The troll is the Cubs fan who wrote this article. Why would a fan of a rival team on a supposedly unbiased website write an article like this? It’s garbage.
Perhaps you can buy the IP address for, “factualcardinalsnewsstoriesonly dotcom”. As dozens of other members always remind you, this is a rumors based site loaded with speculation. Cardinals aren’t exactly in the greatest position moving into next year, not terrible but not great. A lot of the speculative articles aren’t going to have the rose colored glasses on in regards to their outlook for 2025.
BITA, go rub one out to an Asian girl group video. Happy Valentine’s Day!
This isn’t a rumor this is a Cubs fan making up content about his rival.
Lmao #6
@Joel You seriously need to seek counseling. If you have such an issue with this site, why are you here? Especially considering you don’t even watch the sport you are just a fan of baseball news and stats, which has been proven time and time again.
Hahahaha really came out of hibernation for that. Good point though.
No one can ever say you aren’t persistent, BITA. You’ve found a way to say the same thing about fifty times in one comment section, in about fifty different ways.
If only you were actually right. Lol.
There is no bias or nonsense in the article. The writer is building cases for ways the Cardinals could go, which is what you kinda have to do for a poll on the subject. The reason they would trade anyone is really pretty simple though: they’re offered a deal they like.
Why is the resident Cubs fan writing this article? Why not anyone else besides Mr Deeds? This isn’t an Adam Sandler movie and it’s not funny.
@Joel But your comments are funny HAHA LMAO
I think the Cardinals approach isn’t exactly what they’re saying publicly. I think this team may actually be better currently than they were last year. A lot of their prospects have gone on to prosper elsewhere where they’ve been giving the opportunity to play. Goldy hit basically league average last year. The guys that hit last year were the young guys. If this was a reboot Fedde and Helsley would be gone. I don’t think the Aeranado deal is about money. It’s probably more about opening up Walkers natural position. If the Cardinals young guys continue to hit or progress they can hit. I think the Cardinals are looking more towards the deadline because in a weak division they may have a shot. They’d need someone in that rotation to over perform and stay healthy if they can do that(big if albeit)they have a chance
Agree except for Walker at third
I don’t think he has the tools there. Gorman is probably a better idea, and I don’t think he will be anything but average there. With Arenado at third they have one of the better defenses in Baseball
Yes Herrera and Contreras are question marks on D, but late in games, Siani in center, Pages behind the dish and Scott in left, and not sure who at first maybe Burleson. Still it would make for excellent D!
The Cards have publicly said they don’t want Stroman. They don’t want their young pitchers around him evidently plus his contract is high isn’t it?
Wrong Question
As a long time season ticket holder I support the rebuild although I don’t understand why it took so long to create change. What I resent is that the rebuild is being pursued with no…nada….effort to improve next years team. Half of my season ticket group have quit. We feel like we are being taken for granted. We have heard “be patient” too often.
How about guaranteeing season ticket holders that prices won’t rise over the rebuild in exchange for our investing in an unimproved team?
@Bens
% correct.
If I were the Cardinals I would wait. Injuries are going to happen and if the season doesn’t go well they can always trade from strength.
Why rush the kids when you can see where you are in June.
If the Cards fall out I wonder if they could persuade Gray with cash or a chance at the playoffs to waive his no trade clause.
They should trade for a GM.
And a manager
That should be a good start
I’ll take “phrases that I never thought I’d hear for $1,000 Alex”.
The phrase is: “a cash-strapped club like the Yankees”.
Why not? The Cardinals organization, owned by multi Billionaire, Bill DeWallet, aren’t going to be anywhere near a contender for at least 3 years . Billionaire Bill, puts profits before fans.
I only came here to see unhinged BITA comments. I was not disappointed.
How someone could hate mlbtr this much and keep coming back…
BITA is special.
The key word is “should.” I think they should trade a starter, but I don’t think they will.
These kinds of questions are pretty dumb. If any trade will help your team then you should make it. It always depends on what you get back in return. That has been a major concern of mine the last few years is Mo trades guys just because “we had too many outfielders” instead of a better evaluation of players. I don’t care at this point. My 45 year love affair with my home team is done. I may watch a game or two on t.v., but I feel no need to pay closer attention to them than that. They sure as hell won’t be getting any of my money unless the DeWitts sell the team. When I was Trade the Manager, fire Mo now, and sell the team.
If Chaim Bloom is involved, he won’t move guys but hang on to them feigning a contending club. Much as he did for a couple of years at Boston’s helm.
Arenado for Stroman and Cabrera. That would be a good deal for all the parties involved.
Fedde. They can actually probably get something decent for him, but keeping him doesn’t really do much for them. Obviously Gray, but he, Contreras and basically Arenado are pretty much saying screw the organizations immediate future, Imma do me and revel in mediocrity
Sell now, sell later, they will. The surplus in prospect value by selling now, vs at the deadline, is minimal compared to what could be gained at the gate. Only Helsley, Fedde and JoJo have prospect value, unless Bills starts trading away guys with 3 seasons control. They will sell.
Hot take here with a lot of legs today. Not sure if it’s blocked or not but a Montgomery arrenado swap is intriguing on a deep dive
Hopefully, one of the older guys gets hot and has a great year, and they can flip him for something useful.
Who cares let ‘em burn through their roster
No. Arrenado $1M waive that NTC.
Take all that salary for 2 top, top prospects.
You get a little something, something in return but you save $50+M.
Salary dump.
Cardinals need to completely rebuild. Trade starters and position players for top prospects. This will require a massive overhaul not a small retooling. Time for them to face that.
Its really frustrating when your team has a goal of being average every year with the hope that maybe we “catch lightning in a bottle”. MO was an amazing GM. Hes awful as president. He’s killed the energy and excitement. I do think the team could be better than last year just by NOT resigning the very old players. He needed to convert on the value of what we have now, and really reload Blooms stock of young talent if we really think this is a transition year. Idk, this do nothing at all apathy will most likely be returned as fan apathy and hopefully not create team apathy.
