The Orioles expressed interest in first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets at one point this winter, according to MASN’s Roch Kubatko in a recent mailbag column. Sheets remains a free agent, but it’s unclear whether or not the Orioles still maintain interest in his services at this point in the offseason.
Sheets, 29 in April, was a second-round pick by the White Sox back in 2017 and was non-tendered by Chicago back in November after parts of four seasons with the Sox. By far the worst season of Sheets’s career came in 2023, when he hit a paltry .203/.267/.301 with a wRC+ of 61 in 344 trips to the plate. Outside of that disastrous season, however, he’s generally looked like an average to slightly below average hitter at the big league level. Notably that production comes with a massive platoon split; for his career, Sheets sports a respectable 98 wRC+ against right-handed pitching but is 74% worse than league average against southpaws. That same principle applied to his 2024 season as well, when he posted a 94 wRC+ against opposite-handed pitching but lefties limited him to a wRC+ of just 59.
For a club in need of a left-handed platoon bat at first base, the addition of Sheets could make plenty of sense. With that being said, however, Baltimore’s interest in Sheets is at least somewhat surprising given the fact that Ryan O’Hearn fills a very similar niche and is currently locked into their roster on the back of his second consecutive strong season in a part-time role with the club. Like Sheets, O’Hearn is predominantly a first baseman but can also play the outfield in a pinch. While Sheets has gotten more time in the outfield than O’Hearn to this point in their careers, that extra time has only served to highlight Sheets’s questionable defense at the position, as he’s been worth -14 Outs Above Average in right field during his MLB career.
Since the start of the offseason, the Orioles have added Ramon Laureano, Dylan Carlson, and Tyler O’Neill to their already-crowded outfield mix while O’Hearn, Ryan Mountcastle, and Coby Mayo all remain in the mix for playing time at first base. That deep group of talent seems to leave little room for a player like Sheets to break into the mix, though it’s certainly possible the Orioles could still be interested in him as a depth piece on a non-roster deal in case of an injury or trade clearing out some of that 40-man depth. Looking beyond the Orioles, there are a handful of clubs that could use a player like Sheets as a potential platoon option at first base or in the outfield. The Reds, Angels, Rockies, and Marlins are among the clubs who struggled most against right-handed pitching last year who could have room for Sheets on their bench.
What the people of MLB Trade Rumors forgot to mention is that Gavin Sheets’ father, Larry Sheets, used to play for the Orioles back in the 1980s.
Sounds like some good sheets to know.
Thanks George !
Yeah, it’s actually kind of embarrassing that they didn’t.
Also— Gavin is a Gilman grad. Grew up in the Baltimore area.
I was going to mention that as well…good pick-up. I had a folder in elementary school that had the appearance of an oversized version of his Topps card…
It was like a baseball card on roids.
Yeah. They were ahead of their time…
He’s better off with WSN.
he’s from Baltimore. his dad played on the orioles. could explain why they may have spoken to him.
Whenever I hear Larry’s name, I immediately flashback to this time when he absolutely crushed a HR to deep right center in old Yankee Stadium during a regular season game. Moon shot. The man had natural raw power.
Could be talks with the Padres included a 1B going back, as that is a position they could use.
But then, they remembered that he sucks.
It would be funny if they signed him. Add ANOTHER 1B/OF!
It would definitely be kind of cool to bring him into the organization since his dad was an Orioles mainstay back in the 80s who stuck around and put down roots in Baltimore, but he’d probably be better off signing with another team that can offer him a better shot of making the big league club, or at least a shorter list of guys ahead of him on the minor league depth chart.
Yeah. Sheets numbers look like Ohearn’s before he got coached up here. Sheetz would be a penny on the dollar replacement for 2026 if he got fixed in AAA this year.
Yeah, that was my thought as well, that they see him as a potential O’Hearn 2.0, but with even more years of control.
Why do they need this guy when they have Mayo waiting in the wings? Unless they want to suck.
He’d be pure minor league depth and would need multiple injuries to have any chance of reaching the big league roster this year.
Signing with his hometown team would probably be cool, but he’d be much better off signing with a team with a much shallower position player pool.
Only reason to sign here would be to be home and to get coached up to rebuild his value in the minors.
If Elias thought he could turn him into Ohearn that’d help Sheets out tremendously.
@Jbigz12
oHearn as part of a trade package and Sheetz coming home to Balmore and undergoing their oHearn software update… ideal flipping strategy. love it. O’Hearn was an incredible pick up and success. time to get off the ride before it either breaks or loses all value
Getting out of white Sox culture probably helps. Sheets has pop and lefty bat.
Bench piece lefty bat for Pirates makes sense. Low cost to face RHP.
Went to Gilman HS where his ex-mlb player dad Larry Sheets was head cch. Dad had 1 real good yr w/like 29 bombs for O’s in early 80s. He owned batting cages n arcade place up in Westminster, MD. Dude had broad shoulders, enough so that I mention it, n was always nice. If all the kid is lookin for is minor league invite then sign em. Always good to have locals on team.
They’ll sign him eventually. Can’t have enough non hitting barely one dimension guys on the squad. Besides he’s buddies with Ryan Ripken.
They love prospect-blockers in Baltimore.
I just don’t get it with them.
If Elias was interested in this guy, there’s no telling what he will do next, but it probably won’t be good
Who’s better, this guy or Seth Brown?
Offensively, they may be a wash. Defensively you could give the edge to Brown by virtue of the fact that his time at 1B/LF/RF is practically even and he’s played 22 games in CF to Sheets 0.
Dad was much better.
He’s just a younger Ryan O’Hearn lmaooo love it if they did this
It’s unbelievable how they keep trying to bring in even more guys to keep Kjerstad and Mayo from playing.
Looks like nothing to prove in the minors for both of those guys, but a lot at the ML level.
Why why why.
For some reason i could see Sheets with the Marlins
Mariners type of player – Jerry do it!
I think he has a cousin named Raymond Pillowcases that plays in the minors, not sure.
Gavin gross for 500 please
Can’t hit for average, can’t hit for power, can’t run, can’t field, can’t throw. Sounds like the scouting report on Ryan Ohearn.
Not Ohearn 2023
Pretty obviously interest in a split contract or NRI. Sheets would likely prefer a visible path to playing time at this stage of his career.
clarification of my earlier comment about wanting him to replace OHearn… I meant *in Norfolk* until which time that the OHearn software patch proves it is working.
but Mayo to get the PA’s as Sheetz is proving himself as a solid back up. hopefully, Mayo doesn’t even need a backup and fully blossoms next year. love to see several young Orioles all battling each other for the player of the week.
Plenty of young talent on this team we don’t need him or half the other needs we signed this off season.
