While a report earlier today revealed that the Cardinals and Astros have resumed discussions regarding veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado, a report from Chandler Rome and Katie Woo of The Athletic this evening has cast doubt on the likelihood of a deal coming together. According to Rome and Woo, although the sides did re-engage about Arenado in the aftermath of Alex Bregman signing with the Red Sox, those renewed discussions were “brief” and that there has been no traction gained on a deal between the sides. Rome and Woo add that Arenado’s stance on waiving his no-trade clause to join the Astros has not changed to this point.
The report meshes with comments from president of baseball operations John Mozeliak earlier today, in which he suggested to reporters that he didn’t feel anything was “imminent” regarding Arenado. Rome and Woo go on to relay that sources described the possibility of a deal coming together between the two teams as a “long shot,” adding that a deal the sides discussed involving Arenado was considered a “non-starter.” Given that description of talks between the two sides, it’s not entirely clear if Arenado has been approached by St. Louis brass about the possibility of approving a trade to Houston since the Astros tried to reignite talks or if discussions between the sides did not advance far enough for Mozeliak to even broach the subject with his veteran star.
Even when Arenado first blocked a trade to Houston back in December, reporting was quick to emphasize that Arenado’s reluctance to approve the trade was not necessarily a final decision and that he was hoping to survey his own market as well as see how the Astros planned to improve the club after trading star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs just before Arenado vetoed a prospective move to Houston. Now that Bregman has landed in Boston, the Red Sox join the Padres and Dodgers as unlikely landing spots for the veteran due to their full infield mixes. The Yankees have a clear hole at third base Arenado could step into fairly seamlessly, but talks between the Bronx and St. Louis have failed to gain traction due to New York’s unwillingness to spend much beyond their current payroll projection.
That leaves the Astros as the final team reportedly on Arenado’s initial list of approved suitors as things stand. It’s possible that the lack of clear alternative options, in tandem with the Astros’ addition of Christian Walker to their infield mix, would be enough to convince Arenado to approve a trade to Houston. At the same time, it’s entirely possible that Arenado would prefer to play the first half of the season out in St. Louis at this point before both he and Mozeliak reassess the situation over the summer, when St. Louis’s position in an unsettled NL Central division will be more clear and Arenado will have a more concrete idea of which clubs are contenders for the coming postseason.
Rome and Woo go on to note that the Astros’ latest push to swing a deal for Arenado highlights the questions surrounding the Astros’ lineup at this point. Longtime second baseman Jose Altuve appears to be moving towards playing left field at least on a part-time basis, though a trade for Arenado would be expected to make the veteran a full-time presence in left while Isaac Paredes slides from third base to second to accommodate Arenado. Should Altuve end up moving to left field for the majority of his reps this year, that leaves the club fairly thin around the infield with only Mauricio Dubon and non-roster invitees like Brendan Rodgers and Luis Guillorme available to play second base on days Altuve is in left and/or back up the rest of the club’s infield mix.
Even if Altuve were to remain at second base close to full time, however, it can be argued the club is still a bat short. Jake Meyers appears poised to be the club’s regular center fielder with Ben Gamel and Chas McCormick handling the outfield corners. Gamel and McCormick both feature significant platoon splits, however, and adding at least one part-time outfield bat to the mix seems prudent whether that’s the addition of Altuve to the outfield mix or an external addition should the veteran remain on the infield dirt.
Free agent options are relatively scarce at this point in the calendar, with Jose Iglesias and Whit Merrifield the best infield pieces still available while Alex Verdugo, Mark Canha, and David Peralta are among a handful of outfield options still on the market. It’s also possible the Astros could look for other alternatives on the trade market, though with rosters largely set for the coming season it’s unclear what players could still be available that would represent a substantial improvement for the club relative to their current situation.
With this headline….waiting for the “Mariners owner complainers”.
I’m sure the Cardinals and Astros have a deal in place for the last week of July.
thebirds: How would you know that? It doesn’t even make sense.
Not saying it will happen but what he said does make sense
Cortes: Teams don’t agree to trades months before they actually happen. Sounds more like a wacko conspiracy theory.
@baron
it actually happens all the time. in player to be named. Remember the initial Trea Turner deal which had rule changes? The only reason this probably hasnt happened is due to the NTC as im sure they know the pieces to be dealt and frame. Probably want to stay in his good graces so he will agree to it.
Flyby: That’s not the same thing. Players to be named later are part of trades agreed to AT THE TIME THEY’RE MADE and announced.
Teams don’t agree to trades months before they’re made and announced.
He was just being sarcastic.
Sarcasm my friend. As a baseball fan,the last week of July certainly should have some meaning and importance to you.
Lame, sarcasm or not.
Funny you call my comment “lame” when your the one who panicked over it. Lol.
Teams put “handshake deals” in place all the time. There is no rule when you can or cannot negotiate a trade. There a deadline however. Also there is certainly no rule to let a team know who they are interested in and who is available.
Stop being that’s overzealous guy that think he knows everything going on behind the curtain. It’s common knowledge.
You’re * – I have a feeling you graduated the Grammar Police Academy so I will save you.
thebirds: I wasn’t panicking. Why would I panic about dumb comments on here?
And I was merely correcting someone for thinking he knows what’s “going on behind the curtain.”
Stop being the ignorant shmuck for at least a day. You have your whole life to be that guy.
Dude take it easy. I feel bad for the people that have to deal with you. I don’t even know you and clearly I hit a nerve to the point you cannot contain yourself. lol. It’s ok to be wrong. You don’t need to keep chirping about it. Go scream in a pillow, buddy. Haha
Cardinals willing to eat zero salary it sounds like.
I’m a M’s owner complainer but Arenado is not the move we need to make.
Cam Smith is a pretty good prospect.
“He’s not even that talented” says the Mariners fan whose franchise-best third baseman is Kyle Seager. and has names like Mike Blowers and Jim Presley in the top five?
Mariners fans have been pretty bad recently in the comments, I’ve been noticing
The Tucker trade was good for both teams and could easily be devastating for the Cubs if he leaves after the season. Tucker was not going to be an Astro in 26, just like Bregman wasn’t going to be an Astro in 25. Those guys decided to move on and it doesn’t come down to money. Smith a top infield prospect. Parades is an All Star caliber infielder, and we got a 5th starter who we may be able to make into a mid rotation starter. So not, not a stupid trade and the reason why the Astros own the division for the last decade.
Tuck will get at least $300M for 10 years someplace. Astros didn’t want to pay that much so they did what they could. Best of luck to him wherever he ends up. Sucks for Astro fans but wonderful for him.
Tucker won’t get a penny less than $40million and that’s if he hit .200 this year and hit 20 HRs, which everyone knows he’ll hit .300 30+ fingers and 30+ RBIs and probably win a GG. He’s a perennial MVP candidate and will be for the next 10+ years
The Tucker deal was the worst deal in Astros history. End of story…..
that was supposed to say 30+ dingers not fingers and 130 RBIs
It looks you’re saying “trying to win” are the teams spending money but then you threw a giant curveball with the Guardians.
Stay in St. Louis Nolan Arenado!!!
Agreed! Why do we want him??? Dana Brown needs to go… He lost us Loperfido for Kikuchi then lost us Kikuchi. Lost us Tucker then the next day said “we need a LH bat in the lineup…” then lost us Bregman and is now saying “we need a GG calibre 3Bman…” what an idiot. I knew he was sent to us by Atlanta as sabotage…
He’s part of the roughly 66% of owners who run their franchises almost exclusively as a “for profit” business. They want not part of gambling to possibly get a bigger return by fielding a better team. (Bird in the hand…)
Why disturb the cash cow?
And if the M’s sold, what is the garuntee they would’nt get another strictly business owner in it for the money? Fans should buy it or stop whining, they cannot for an owner to sell or spend. Go follow a team that spends.
“He’s not even that talented”
Seething and coping because the Mariners don’t do jack s@!t ever isn’t an excuse to be absolutely dead wrong about one of the best 3Bs to ever take the field.
I put all the “Mariners owner complainers” on mute. At this point they just like complaining about anything. 4 straight winning seasons. A playoff appearance. A playoff series win. Best pitching staff in baseball. Two rising superstars in Julio and Cal. Yet they still grasp at straws to find something complain about. They just like complaining about something.
@PrincessYuki it’s quite rich coming from you, especially since you constantly go to Dodgers articles and complain about the way Dodgers run their team
Yep. Nolan Arenado is just not that talented,
He may be a top-10 3B bat and top-3 3B glove since the expansion era, he may be a top-5 3B defender all time and have legit HOF credentials with his >300 HR and generation-defining defense, but none of that means he’s talented or anything like that.
Even as he is now — an above average bat with a great glove would be a huge upgrade over the other… “options” have at 3B. Or do you really, truly think Polanco is better?
So many twists and turns, I’m so riveted. On the edge of my seat with bated breath. (Not really.)
Rockies’ fans probably the only ones enjoying this
The bar is obviously very low for what gives Rox fan enjoyment. At least the cards aren’t going to try to replace him with a Kris Bryant contract!
Yep, they’re wondering who their Rockies are paying $10M for Arenado to play for.
I’ll admit this story gave me a tingle.
Is it legal to bate your breath?
only if you’re the master at it
That was a goooooopd one.
When got sad when I read, “More to come…”
No Traction…the Lousy GM shapiro and his lackie are still in Toronto …
The Nightmare continues….
Is it possible this is a misinterpretation? Maybe there’s “No Trashcan” Between Cardinals, Astros In Nolan Arenado Talks?
Maybe you need to find some fresh material
Sorry, it was an easy, throwaway comment. I didn’t mean to ruin your weekend.
“Ruin your weekend”…Hey, comedy is a risky business and you have to be willing to take the slings and the barbs.
Personally, I thought your “no trashcan” comment was pretty funny, but I also get that Astros fans are fairly tired of hearing them.
We’re not tired of hearing it. It reminds us of a World Series win every time, lol.
I understand where you’re coming from. It’s like when I watch the film ‘Eight Men Out’.
I keep pondering if the Yankees aren’t sneaking in on Arenado. Perhaps the reversal on the facial hair policy was a bit of a signal to a player with a no trade clause, as well.
His jon trade clause is only enacted if a player named Jon is included in the trade. So I doubt the facial hair policy comes into play.
This commenting system is ludicrous. I miss the old Disqus format. The autocorrect from how slow the system is is pretty bad.
Pretty sure Arenado wasn’t the tipping point on the Yankees beard policy.
Not saying he was. But it was a good way of broadcasting that without letting the cat out behind the scenes.
The Yankees really don’t want Donaldson 2.0….3 year commitment for big money, with a player declining on both offense and defense……exactly who positives do you see other than the Cardinal doing handstands if they could actually trade him……
Sure, he may be declining, but if the Cards are paying down, he may be a reasonable option, maybe even fit their budget. If you look at the 30 starting 3B in MLB, there aren’t many better. Its a sad statement.
No thanks, Donaldson also gave the Yankees one good season in his first….(and in fact considering again ballplayers so did Rizzo and how’d that turn out also)…….and then it was downhill from there….don’t care how much the Cards pay down, internal options can hold the fort and may surprise either good or bad….and if bad, there’s always the trade deadline when they’ll be players that can play 3rd well available……the Cards wouldn’t be so desperate if they felt he had lots left in the tank…..
They’re preparing for Guerrero next year at 1B
Vlad isn’t coming to the Yankees. He has said as much. I know he backed off of that but what happened is his agent and dad told him to shut up because he was potentially costing himself millions by publicly eliminating the Yankees.
Id be utterly shocked if he’s not a Cub. Doesnt he despise the yankees?
If I was a betting man….its Cohen big bucks and the Mets.
@Joe Randy Johnson signed with the Yankees so anything is possible. I think Vladdy said what he said in jest in an attempt to create a rivalry. He was also a young 20-something y.o. kid then. With that said, I don’t think they should sign Jason Giambi 2.0. for the long-term commitment required.
YBC it’s possible but I think in the end, he uses the Yankees to drive up his price. Not sure what team. I think the Mets will show some restraint unless Alonso opts out which I don’t see as very likely. Maybe the Cubs pony up for him.
How? They have Alonso back now
The Cards aren’t trading him to the Cubs
@Dock
I read something yesterday that the Yanks were one of the teams he approved a trade to.
Joe – Precisely. Vlad is using the Yankees, as he should. No team should be eliminated, especially one with deep pockets.
With that said, how could the Yankees sign him and not go deep into the 110% tax bracket? Other than Goldie, Devin and Grisham there’s not much money dropping off after this season.
Neither Nolan nor Vladdy are going to the Cubs IMHO.
@Fever
Vlad Jr. had made it clear on several occasions that he had no intention of ever playing for the Yankees. Something happened between his dad and the Yanks, similar to Giffrey Jr. taking the same stance. Yanks might do their due diligence, but I don’t think they would fall for being used to get him more money.
Knicks – We will never know the reason, but my gut tells me it was financial reasons that changed his mind. It’s just good business. I think it will be Mets unless he stays in Toronto.
Dock… If the Cubs actually spend at that level next season, it’ll be for Tucker. Unless they bomb this year, Shaw and Busch are their third and first basemen going forward.
Joe- I keep thinking hes why the Cubs have been a little stingy. Playing all in on Vlad Jr. Guy just SCREAMS Cub to me.
Knicks- good info, thanks. I saw Yankees chatter about him. I knew I wasn’t totally making stuff up.
Rondon- maybe so. I mean I think we’re all just speculating. But I’d say the Cubs are waiting on someone.
I agree. I think he will end up with either the Mets or Boston. The Mets can let Winkler walk and then move Alonso to DH.
Making Alex Verdugo shave last year was traumatic for Hal Steinbrenner.
No. There was a The Athletics article yesterday that the Yankees only checked in with the Cards when they initially announced that he was available to them. They never had any high level of interest.
YankeesBleacherCreature- Didnt see that. Thanks.
I don’t understand why any team would want to take on Arenado’s contract. 3 years for a guy already showing pronounced decline, that’s a really bad contract.
If he can play around league average, the time to trade him will be around the deadline. He’ll probably be open to different teams then, depending on how the season shakes out.
@Luke: As far as teammate this guy is a pad his stats empty calorie loser. Suspected it years ago, but heard it from a teammate who couldn’t praise Blackmon enough by contrast. Wasn’t about personality or bitterness-straight candor. Certain players are spreadsheet darlings and wilt in consequential moments. Zero surprise he wants to be LAD-ride actual winners like Freeman/Betts.
To be fair, Freeman wanted to stay with the Braves, but his agent screwed that up.
I saw Arenado play the last weekend of the season in SF. Slowest bat speed I’ve seen from a guy in awhile. Not like weak-Esteury Ruiz type. Like aging slugger.
I agree Luke. The Cards are going to have to eat most of his contract to move him.
Raise your hand if you find this story tiresome.
Yes..yes…yes…a thousand times yes….who cares about Nolan Arenado already.
Anyone willing to go ‘all Jane Austen’ on us needs to be taken seriously. Please, no more Arenado trade talk!
Shocking!
Not so much.
Well…..it really isn’t a sexy trade
You guys want him?
I would love him…but i might be the only one
The irony of all this is that, for all the talk of their rebuilding, their need for a rebuild, etc.– the Cardinals have more than a decent chance of winning the rather-even NL Central this season. They did, after all, win 12 more games in 2024 than they won in 2023, and could easily improve some more in 2025. They should hold on to Arenado and go for it
Alan53, the real answer which is being ignored.
This (and the NTC of course) is a big part of the reason Arenado isn’t on another team. Eating a large amount of salary doesn’t improve the Cardinals. It isn’t that bad of a contract.
The Cards may be able to compete this season, but Arenado won’t help them.
So Arenado gets to be in a clubhouse where he’s not entirely welcome while blocking younger players. Nice.
Not welcome? Who in the clubhouse doesn’t want him there?
Right, the current ownership and lame duck front office, is the group that wants to move him. It’s payroll politics if anything along with wanting to give Gorman guaranteed starting reps at 3rd
All it is two teams talking as St. Louis has yet to ask Nolan if he willing to waive his no trade clause to Astros, otherwise it wouldn’t do any good for St. Louis if they can’t get him to say yes to Astros
He wants to know the trade offer before deciding which has been the case since day 1 when Mo and him first spoke. Nobody is a villain here and they both have a very clear mutual understanding of the situation.
I don’t understand the attention Arenado got this offseason. He’s projected for 3ish WAR, is 34, a hefty (but fair) contract and declining numbers since his MVPish 2022. Any team with a hole at 3B would be happy to have him, but give up something for him, and have to roster him through 2027?
The leverage is too evenly spread out for me to expect much to happen. His deal has an equilibrium to it makes me think if he retires in ’27 it’s as a Cardinal.
I actually truly hope they hold on to him. Gorman isn’t fit to wash Arenado’s jock strap. After this year his salary drops a fair amount and then down to 14 million in ’27. Hold him unless he demands a trade. He evidently isn’t worth much of anything to other teams and his experience, work ethic and pedigree is beneficial to the organization beyond what he does on the field.
I think there is some smoke here and Mozaliak had to send out his PR piece Woo before it became a fire. So seems like just a matter of time. Astros brought in Brendan Rodgers, but splits outside of Coors seem like he’ll eventually get cut and the Astros are still needing more on the infield to shift Altuve to LF.
34 as of 4/16/25. Declining numbers. Expensive contract for 3 more years. Unless the Cards pay a notable portion going forward… big no thanks.
Yankees shouldn’t bite. Too many times (Rizzo, Donaldson, etc.) they’ve brought in an overpaid older player, and it just hasn’t worked. If they really can’t find an answer, they can trade for someone fat the deadline
Dana Brown: “Hey John, it’s Dana. Has Nolan changed his mind yet?”
John Mozeliak: “Nope”
Dana Brown: “ok”
Here’s the deal. 3B Arenado ($32 million) and RP Helsley ($7.5 million) to Phils for DH Schwarber ($20 million), SP Walker ($18 million) and INF/OF Kennedy ($750,000). On Phils, Arenado, Bohm and Harper play 3B, 1B and DH interchangeably. Cards get young, versatile infielder/outfielder prospect, starter and power hitting DH while Phils get closer they need, added bat they need, and improved defense.
That trade would be a no brainer for the Phillies! Walker is a zero at this point and Schwarber.is a free agent this year! U want the Cardinals to give up 2 quality players for one prospect and the money is even! Why would any GM do that when all they were looking for was salary relief on Arenado’s contract?
rotten, The Cards really want to move Arenado. They gain salary relief because Arenado has an extended, expensive contract while Schwarber is a free agent after 2025. The Cards move Arenado and Helsley, who is also a free agent after 2025, and get a slugging DH who they would probably be able to extend, Walker who is by no means a zero but still a talented pitcher in desperate need of a new address, and a young, energetic player who can play any infield position and the outfield. Teams in a hurry to get a deal done have given away much more and gotten back much less than the Cards would with this deal. The additional salary burden limits the Phils ability to sign a ultra-expensive free agent like Tucker or Vlad Jr next season, but neither of those players will be heading to Philly anyway. However, the addition of the best defensive and one of the best hitting third basemen in the game and a legitimate closer greatly enhances the Phils ability to get to the world series this season. Without such a trade that answers many of the Phils’ most pressing needs, the Phils may win their fair share of games this season, but they won’t best the Mets or Dodgers.
A lot of stories posted for no real story. Someone is desperate.
Seems like the could have been just an Update to the previous post… Oh well, gotta pad out the home page in between Dodgers news.
Arenado ready nixed a trade to the Astros. Again, the Angels and not the Astros are on the Arenado trade list. It’s not about winning.
This is good news for Astros fans. NA is not a good addition to the team.
The story that just keeps on giving.
Tomorrow’s headline: “Arenado has Stopped Shaving”.
Best scenario for the Cardinals: Arenado has a strong “bounce back”: season, but the young players are good enough to keep us in contention so there is no trade.. Most likely scenario for the Cards: Arenado’s decline continues, the young team plays sub .500 ball, and nobody wants Arenado anyway, so there is no trade, and he continues to siphon off cash needed for the rebuild. In either case, Arenado is not going anywhere. Mozeliak has even managed to screw up the decline and rebuild of this team. He cannot be gone soon enough.
I mean, there is a scenario where Arenado bounces back and the Cardinals are sellers at the deadline, and he is traded. A 4 WAR season is not a crazy outcome for Arenado. Neither is a 2 WAR season…
Going to be a rough season to be a Astros fan.
Only problem with your thought is PAredes is much younger than Bregman, he’s a really good defender and right now probably hits better than both Arenado and Bregman.
You can’t blame him for not wanting to be traded. He got a no trade contract for a reason and he would rather stay in St Louis and hope they’re better than everyone expects them to be. If they suck at the deadline he can always try again.
The no trade deals are lose, lose for the teams who agree to them.
Thank goodness. Astros shouldn’t waste money and prospects on Arenado.
There is no doubt in my mind that Arenado leadership and fiery personality would be a boom for the Yankee clubhouse. My doubts with his deteriorating bat to ball skill set (exit velocity slipping past 3 years) and the fact that Yankee stadium doesn’t play well for his bat. On top of that his contract is detrimental unless the Cards picked up a huge chunk like half which they seem not willing to do.
As a Yankee fan I’m looking for a strong reliable glove/arm third baseman who preferably bats left handed and doesn’t strike out every 3 at bats. That’s a rare commodity in today’s game.
As a Yankee fan the only trade for Arenado to me that makes sense is if the Cards are taking one contract like Stroman back in a one for one swap and Cards also eat 10m or if they take Stroman and DJ with a few solid but not top prospects for Arenado full contract. Jorbit Vivas and maybe a lower level prospect or a bullpen arm could go to the Cards.
Arenado owed 65m (72m to be more accurate) 3 yrs
Stroman 18m with a innings option he won’t reach for 2026
DJ 30m 2 yrs
Mets trade Starling Marte ( 20M ) for Arenado ( 65M/3 years ) + Josh Baez ( OF prospect )
Mets then trade Arenado ( 65M/3 years ) to Blue Jays for Jake Bloss and Alan Roden
Mets trim payroll by 20M while adding 3 prospects
Cardinals trim payroll and add Marte in a walk year
Jays get their 3B for minimal prospects
You forgot:
Mets send $30M to Jays to offset negative value of contract, negating any payroll savings.
Cardinals rejoice at stupidity of Mets
Entire Blue Jays front office fired
Arenado stays. Arenado blocks. Arenado goes.
Biggest non-story story of the season. Hold it, hold it, this just in. Nevermind.
“Player with ‘no trade clause’ who previously rejected trade to Houston unlikely to be traded to Houston.”
Fork spotted in kitchen.
What if the ideal trade doesn’t even exist, and the pursuit of one disrupts the very balance of a team’s identity?
There is an ideal trade, it just comes with the Cardinals rolling up 30 million one dollar bills into a backpack and sending them with Arenado when he leaves.
Arenado is going to have a bounce back year, and the Cardinals will compete for a postseason spot.
Anything is possible in baseball, although some things are very unlikely. Like these two things.
If the Astros trade for Verdugo, what are they going to do with Dezenzo? I thought the plan was to trade Bregman and put Dezenzo at 3b. then I thought I heard Dezenzo might play LF. but a verdugo trade would mess that up. even if they platoon, dezenzo’s future as a potential fantasy impact player would seem to be in serious jeopardy. maybe it already is, I dunno. i’m just trying to figure out who to keep in my fantasy league. I guess verdugo over dezenzo??? got a feeling verdugo is never going to be the player once hoped for, I want to cut my losses but I can envision the Astros signing him and then him hitting for .300, 20 homers, 80 rbis, etc
but it seems like the Astros don’t havem much faith in dezenzo ever amounting to anything
