Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak spoke to members of the media today, including Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, saying that trade candidate Nolan Arenado is likely staying put. “I think the mindset right now is he’s likely going to be a part of our club at this point,” Mozeliak said. “I definitely feel like it’s a better chance than not” that he is the club’s Opening Day third baseman.
Given the events of recent weeks, that’s not terribly surprising. It was reported about a month ago that the club’s efforts to move Arenado had largely stalled, with the Red Sox being the best remaining landing spot, but even that fit had some problems.
The Sox are making a big investment in their infield, agreeing to a deal last night with Alex Bregman. He’s reportedly going to play second base, so he doesn’t on his own block Arenado from playing third at Fenway. However, the fit was already awkward with Rafael Devers at third. Moving Devers to first and then trading Triston Casas or Masataka Yoshida were scenarios that were bandied about this winter but they always seemed somewhat of a difficult tightrope to walk.
Those scenarios are technically still possible to imagine in a vacuum but the larger team context makes it harder to see. Bregman’s deal is reportedly for $120MM over three years, a $40MM average annual value. Deferreals reportedly drop the net present value closer to $31.9MM annually but it’s still a huge chunk of the payroll. Arenado’s deal still has roughly three years and $60MM to be paid out, when factoring in deferrals and some money being picked up by the Rockies.
Boston making a huge investment in their infield just to create roster problems was already a bit tough but is even tougher now with Bregman’s contract on the books. Chris Cotillo of MassLive today estimates the odds of Boston still being in on Arenado at “about 0.0%.”
In the larger context of the Cardinals’ offseason, it’s a very surprising place for them to be. By late September of last year, before the 2024 campaign had even fully ended, reports had emerged that the Cardinals were planning a shift in direction. 2025 was to be a sort of reset year, with the club focusing less on short-term contention and more on long-term player development. As part of this shift, Mozeliak would spent the 2025 still in his POBO title while Chaim Bloom focused on overhauling the club’s player development system, but with Bloom to replace Mozeliak at season’s end.
At that point, there was plenty of speculation that the Cards would make players available if they were expensive or nearing free agency. Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Steven Matz, Erick Fedde, Ryan Helsley and others seemed likely to be available.
Now, several months later, they are all still on the roster. Contreras and Gray quickly signalled that they were unwilling to waive their no-trade clauses while the club surprisingly didn’t seem to have much interest in moving Fedde or Helsley.
Arenado was reportedly more willing than Gray or Contreras to consider waiving his no-trade protection, but that didn’t mean he would approve any deal. There was some reporting that Arenado had a list of six teams that he would approve a trade to, though there was also some pushback that such a firm list existed and that Arenado’s preferences were more context-dependent.
He vetoed a deal to the Astros in December but reportedly wasn’t wholly opposed to going to Houston. Rather, he had some hesitation about the club’s direction after trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs. Rather than wait around and see if he would change his mind, the Astros took the less-complicated route of signing Christian Walker to play first base. That effectively locked Isaac Paredes, acquired in the Tucker deal, into third base and made an Arenado deal far less likely.
While Arenado may not have had an ironclad team list, it seems his parameters will have to widen for anything to get done now. “I think it would have to open up a little bit more,” Mozeliak said of Arenado’s list of acceptable teams, per Jones. “Think we’ve exhausted the others.”
Goold reported yesterday that Mozeliak had contacted five clubs that appeared to fit Arenado’s preferences, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Padres and Dodgers. The Astros were presumably the fifth. Goold added that the Yankees wanted the Cards to eat more of Arenado’s contract than they were willing to do. The Dodgers have Max Muncy at third and never seemed particularly interested in making a change there. The Padres are working under significant financial constraints. The Sox are now out after adding Bregman.
Perhaps Arenado will change his mind and consider other options, given the circumstances. His priority appears to be winning and that seems unlikely in St. Louis this year with their reset plans. Reportedly, the Royals reached out to the Cardinals this winter but were turned away since the Cards didn’t think Arenado was willing to go there. Teams like the Tigers and Blue Jays reportedly pursued Bregman and might have some willingness to pivot to Arenado, though Arenado might not be willing to play for those clubs.
If Arenado does end up staying, it will leave the Cards with some playing time puzzles to figure out. Their thinking with an Arenado trade was to save some money but also to give more playing time to guys with uncertain futures. Nolan Gorman was going to get regular run at third base as he looks to bounce back from a tough season in 2024. With Arenado still around, he could get pushed back to second base. That could block Thomas Saggese and/or nudge Brendan Donovan into a utility role where he spends more time in the outfield, perhaps taking playing time from guys like Jordan Walker, Victor Scott II and others.
Perhaps there are some twists and turns up ahead but it’s been a very surprising winter for the Cardinals thus far, as an offseason that once likely to involve significant changes has resulted in very few. They haven’t yet signed a free agent to a major league deal and their only trade has been to acquire depth infielder Michael Helman from the Twins.
Makes no sense why arenado rejected houston
Cards were awful in 2024, stros won division
So he’d rather stay on a bad tm, in a place that is ready to move on from him? Why’s he being so difficult (on the cards & on himself)?
I really think he was hoping the Dodgers would trade for him. More to do with that than Tucker moving just prior in my opinion.
Actually, i think he was hoping San Diego would bite, hence why he made it a point to throw in a willingness to move to 1B.
Things happen throughout the course of the season and there is always a chance Arenado gets traded at the deadline but i don’t think any of us should be surprised if Arenado finishes his out his contract in St.Louis
That’s what happens when you give out no-trade clauses like Halloween candy. Blame Mo. I wouldn’t be excited about moving to a Houston team that was in the middle of selling off a top OF and letting their star 3rd baseman. Moving sucks
He’s a weirdo. Only wants to be traded to teams with established third basemen. And yeah, rejected a trade to Houston but has the Angels on the list of teams he’d waive for.
That seems like it here. Arenado never asked to be traded. It was the Cards which had approached him first and he was amenable to lift his NTC for a move to a competitive team. He rejected the Astros trade yet remained open to going there wanting to see how their offseason shapes out.
Plenty of contending teams can use him while this is also on Moz pricing him too highly.
I agree. I think Mo’s price has more to do with it than anything else.
You’re absolutely correct!!
Mozeliak priced himself and the Cardinals out with the teams Arenado stated he’d waive his no trade clause.
They won the division with Tucker and Bregman! They might be competitive but I like the Tigers, Mariners,Rangers and Royals chances better.
He just said. Tucker leaving shied him away from the deal
stros won the division with tucker? the guy missed half the season. astros have won the division 8 straight years and every time a star leaves, whether its springer or correa or cole, everyone says time is up on houston. i hate the astros. but they find ways to W. arenado will really regret this. meanwhile houston received cam smith for tucker and i think there’s every chance cam makes his debut this yr and might even be a difference maker
cards meanwhile are combined 16 gms under 500 past 2 yrs and finished 10 games behind the division leader last yr. if he thinks he’s got a better shot in st louis he’s crazy. if he thinks the dodgers are gonna trade for him, he’s even crazier
It was the kyle tucker trade…. arenado must have seen them with less of a chance without his production?
He’s a human being with a family? Also have you ever moved? Dude it sucks.
Re-engage with Houston…Bregman was going to play 3B had they brought him back. Nolan’s swing would work well in Houston, and he wouldn’t veto trade this time around.
Maybe not uprooting his family means more to him than a slight chance at a ring.
After the Kyle Tucker trade Arenado seemingly became uninterested in playing in Houston. It would work well for his swing yes, but there’s more to the story we don’t know as to why he really doesn’t want to play there. Could be family? Could be sign stealing? Could be he doesn’t see them as legit contenders after loosing to the Tigers in WC round
It’s also a interesting contract to trade
He should consider Detroit, now that they have signed Flaherty. The Tigers should be good again this year. The only issue is that he’d have to move his family to Detroit, although St. Louis is not exactly Beverly Hills itself.
The Cardinals current situation with the Arenado contract may be why other organizations, other than the Mets with the Soto contract, were reluctant to offer contracts in excess of 3-4 years to free agents.
AGAIN for the umpteenth time Joel are you going to provide a link with any evidence supporting your claim Arrenado wants to or asked to be traded
I was about say, I’ve been under the impression the Cardinals are trying to dump him and that’s what has him irritated.
AGAIN Joel are you going to provide a link with some sort of evidence substantiating your claim??
Yeah, there isn’t anything supporting that. The team wants him gone along with Gray and Contreras. The other 2 just won’t pull their no trade clauses.
AGAIN Joel you care to provide a link with Amy evidence substaniating this claim of yours. You ve only been asked numerous times by multiple people over months now.
Is it possibly because no evidence of your claim exists?? It should be pretty easy to silence the naysayers, just provide a link with the some evidence already…
It won’t happen, but the cubs are the best remaining fit
Agree, but you’re funny. Ain’t happening.
If the Cubs trade for Turner, that would open a spot for Arenado in Los Angeles.
Of course, if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle.
Turners a free agent. Hasn’t been in L.A in a couple years
I meant Muncy. My bad.
Reds are a good fit too … but yep … that is not gonna happen either.
Cashman wake up! This guy is a perfect answer for third! Even though older some of his numbers are comparable to Bergman’s. Get it done!
Yeah no doubt this should be the play. 3/60 after what Bregman got us a steal.
@Sal
But it’s not 3/$60. The lux tax would cost them another 100% which would bring it to $120 mil until they got back down under the apron.
Ppl don’t seem to understand this. The more and more they go over the lux tax it makes it more difficult to go after Tucker or Vlad next season. They might choose to do so by that tax will make the total bill ridiculous. Would having Arenado nice be worth the squeeze?
I’d rather spend at third tbh. That position is desolate. We’re going over the tax at some point, and no matter what we need to fill positions.
Ppl are giving the New York fn Yankees a pass at the way they spend, but jeez they PRINT MONEY. They lost prestige to the Dodgers because of the way they approach the business these days. We used to build the all star teams the way the Dodgers do now. We’re so right there this offseason, an Arenado trade would seal the deal.
@Salzilla – the Yankees payroll is already over $300M. They aren’t that far away from the Dodgers overall spending. It’s just that the Dodgers are the smarter team and don’t hamstring themselves with bad contracts like DJL, Stroman, Stanton and others.
Smarter? Eh. Luckier? Yes. Any contract can go bad very fast.
I agree pando8888!!!
Arenado would be a great fit defensively for the Yankees.
Plus…. By getting away from the Cardinals hideous manager & coaching staff, I can see Arenado’s offense jumping back to his ole All-Star self!!!!!
Steinbrenner won’t approve the spend. He called last year’s payroll “not sustainable for us, financially” (nonsense , I’m aware) and this offseason’s moves have lowered the number by more than $20 million. I believe the budget has been exhausted, which is why the team was looking to unload Stroman’s salary.
Maybe we can dredge the farm system and assemble an acceptable package for Bohm. $8 million for a quality bat and a glove that’s now roughly average (3 OAA, 0 DRS last season. They could do a lot worse in a now limited market
MO’s not calling the shots anymore
Cardinals want to dump salary with zero penalty. Yankees would jump on a deal if they would simply take Marcus Stroman back in the deal. Stromans contract expires a year earlier than Arenado’s and it’s less annual money.
Sure Stroman’s vesting option sucks, but throw him on waivers by all star break and the problem will take care of itself.
Yankees can also give him Oswaldo Peraza as he is out of options!
Do you mean oswald peraza? He has plenty of options. Maybe you mean Oswaldo Cabrera
What if no team claims Stroman on waivers?
Then release him and any team can take him on for veterans minimum salary and absorb the vesting option if it activates.
MoTie was yucking it up and basking in the glory when the Diamondbacks & Rockies were forced to giveaway assets when MoTie was a rule-maker. Shoes on the other foot and now he is a rule-taker. Welcome to the thunderdome.
In body or in spirit?
Arenado is soley responsible for the way this has played out. And that is his right. But he also only has himself to blame for not being on a contender. Maybe he will change his tune at the trade deadline.
Tigers keep dodging bullets so this is good news. That Bregman contract was too insane. For such small production it really puts the cost of players into the stratosphere. If the Tiger’s Torkelson does 20 homers and 50 rbi’s in even a platoon role they saved a bundle not getting Bregman or trading for Arenado. .
Good
Arenado is going to be on the roster opening day? How anticlimactic.
The Cardinals could have spent 20 million and been competitive this season if they wanted to, but now the best options are signed with other clubs. The Brewers are weaker. The Cubs have improved but are still flawed. I have my doubts about Scott in Centerfield. Nootbaar could play center, put Donovan primarily in the outfield, and have Gorman and Saggese play second. Keep Arenado. Bring up some young arms: Mathews, Hence, McGreevey and find out what they can do.
Cardinals not willing to include the money that it would take to move him and not willing to take on a bad contract to mitigate his cost.
It’s really weird that the Cards’ entire offseason plans revolved around trading him yet they couldn’t get the job done. Now they remain in the middle for another year.
They were going to be in the middle no matter what. They have too many good-not-great players and horrible decision-making.
Yanks don’t want Muncy. He’s not good defensively. Nita I know you’re trying to hype up Arenado. I love the guys leadership and temperament but that contract and his offensive regression plus the Yankee stadium factor is not a great fit. The Yanks cannot take on that contract without giving a bad contract back and that would be a one for one swap of Stroman for Arenado which would save the Cards 42m. They are looking for salary relief so no prospects would be going back. Now if they took DJ and Stroman they would still be saving 10m and would get a few prospects but not the names you suggested like Dominguez!
arenado is a beast
Yanks are not taking Arenado contract without a bad contract going back and that would be either Stroman or DJ. Stroman for Arenado straight up saves the Cards 42m. DJ for Arenado strait up save the Cards 30m. If both Stroman and DJ are in the deal that would still save the Cards 10m and then prospects could be in the deal like a Will Warren type. Other than that the Yanks have no reason to add onto payroll when they have a more athletic defensive young player with pop in Oswald Peraza who can platoon with Cabrera at third.
I Don’t think the Dodgers want to give up on Muncy, especially early in games vs a righty, but a move to second seems smart. A defensive replacement later in games, and let’s face it the Dodgers are going to be ahead late in a lot of games. Arenado solidifies the infield defense, their only question mark. And with the pitching staff, why not put the best defense behind them.
Cleaning slate for Bloom.
They have made it awkward for Arenado.
One of the best third baseman, and they can’t trade him.
Arenado deserves better.
Actually they did trade him. To Houston. Arenado exercised his no trade clause. Arenado doesn’t deserve a damn thing.
We tried, we’re stuck with him unfortunately.
That’s what all GMs say when desperation sets in on their trade efforts
Poverty
Unless you are the deferrals, Mets or yanks overpaying aging players has consequences
He’d have a chance to play for the division and get in the playoffs if he went to KC. Seems like a good opportunity to me.
The Cardinals were AWFUL in 2024, and REALLY awful in 2023. Can’t wait to see how the circus in 2025 looks. I’m guessing very comical.
But hey with no expectation s for the team????? hold on tight!
Marmol, Mo nor ownership will take any responsibility.
It will be the same injured young players, injured veterans, just can’t keep a team on the field. Anyone sick of this already?
83 wins isn’t awful. It wasn’t enough, but awful is a bit of a stretch. Their problem wasn’t injuries, it was regression. (Among other things)
Goldschmidt 154 GP
Arenado 152 GP
Wynn 150 GP
Donovan 152 GP
Burleson 152 GP
Even Noot and Gorman played over 105
The only injury of note was Contreras getting hit with a bat and still coming back earlier than expected.
On the pitching side, outside of Lynn, the starters all were within a game or two of 30 starts.
We can debate what went wrong or what needs to improve going forward but injuries were not part of it
I never understood Mo’s comments to mean that the Everything Must Go now to lower the payroll as much as possible, even if it meant eating bad contracts, taking on other less bad contracts and making bad trades. I thought the direction was not to issue any new big contracts and look for opportunities to trade big contracts for decent returns. I never thought the team was willing to do something like eat $20M to save $5M,which seems to be the case with Arenado.
The only competition with Arenado is off the board so getting anything decent back is probably not happening. The Cardinals best play might be to wait til mid-season and see if he changes his list of teams or if any of those teams have a need
Illich gummed up the works by not hiring the Superfife.
Love it. Mo deserves every bit of challenge he encounters. He made this mess.
He seems to be very diva-like. You can’t say contending is a major priority then turn around and invoke your NTC to teams like HOU, KC and DET who all made the postseason last year. That totally contradicts everything your babbling about to the media. Either you want to play for a contender or you don’t. At this point if I was a GM of a team like the Royals or Tigers I wouldn’t even want him on my roster. Enjoy your last 3 years in STL rebuilding!
2.5 bWAR last year, maybe 1.5 bWAR this year. Maybe. Could easily go sub-one.
Here’s a thought:
Give pink slips to Mozeliak and Marmol and let Bloom build a team around Arenado, Contreras, and Gray.
Good idea! And bring in Pujols to manage.
Doesn’t even have to be Albert. They could get Albert’s second cousin twice removed to manage and they’d do a better job.
Arenado could provide some veteran stability and leadership. He’s still a good hitter but not as good as earlier in his career. Nolan Gorman can’t hit the side of the barn! He strikes out all the time. They need to teach him how to be a contact hitter and not a power hitter. I’d rather have a guy hitting .330 with zero homers than someone hitting .195 with 25 homers…..,not that Gorman would ever hit .330!
The Cards could do a lot worse than have Arenado at third this year. So there’s that. I’m surprised Mozeliak apparently didn’t sound out the NTC players before laying out all the “reset” plans. I wonder how patient they’ll be with Jordan Walker. He seems to me to be the key player among the youngsters.
I don’t think the Cardinals front office is anywhere near alignment, but they really are conflicted instead. They do not show much progress toward improvement nor have they identified and corrected problems. and set aim on just being younger and /or competitive.
They dumped good Manager a few years ago citing ‘difference in philosophy”. Stepped backwards hiring Marmol. The FO is really weak..
They want Gorman to play 3rd but will not do what is necessary to trade Arenado, is the simplest exampl.e
Arenado is still a very good player, just a declining one at this point. Probable HOF at some point. I’d hold him, see how the games play out. There are is some talent on the roster. While Gorman K’s too much he is still really young and could figure it out. Walker should be allowed to just hit and not be expected to hit 30 dingers changing his bat path. He is quick for a big dude so hopefully his reads in the outfield improve. Contreras at first is better than behind the plate. Herrera can hit for a catcher, but can’t toss out my grandma stealing second base which is a problem, but it is a known issue that I’m sure he has worked on all off-season. He is young also. If things fall just right the division is still a toss up. Cubs are improved some but seem to always find a way to screw that up. Brewers just play ball so they will stay in it all season. I don’t think STL is gonna throw in the towel by any means. If they intended to, Helsley would be gone.
I agree with some of your comments about Walker and Gorman, etc. I’m old school. I say ditch most of the analytics and just hit the ball hard somewhere, like former player Al Oliver once said. I would rather Walker hit like Keith Hernandez than like Dave Kingman.
This is an outrage
The fans have already decided who he would get traded to and for who
The only one we’ve heard from is their POBO and some reporters. Haven’t heard a peep from the actual player. Who knows what really is going on but seems all speculative at this point. Should be interesting if/when he reports to camp and has mics shoved in his face until it’s addressed.
I don’t understand the hated some of you people have towards Nolan Arenado. He is still one of the best 3rd basemen in the league and is still the best option for St Louis for the following reason…if the Cards are serious about winning their division and they had ANYBODY better than Arenado to play the position they would have moved heaven and earth to make a trade happen.
I think Arenado will have a bounce back season and he won’t be the reason the Cards don’t make the playoffs …Here is Arenado. Scroll down to see his 2025 projected stats. There are plenty of teams that would take these numbers…
140 Hits
77 RBI
21 HR
.764 OPS
.444 Slg
.267 BA
Arenado will make 20 million dollars this year compared to Alex Bregman who just signed for 40 million dollars a year and his projected stats for 2025
133 Hits
75 RBI
21 HR
778 OPS
438 Slg
257 BA.
Based on the projected numbers alone it would appear that Arenado is worth his contract in comparison to others.
baseball-reference.com/players/a/arenano01.shtml?u…
Different topic but disappointing that Donovan lost his arbitration case. He’s a good player! The tightwad Cardinals should be inking him and Winn to 5 year contracts while the price is low. And I think it’s past time for Mo to leave!
I think that there are many fans, like my self, hoping that Arenado is our third baseman this season. We may not win the division but we need a reason to go to the park.
Going to the ballpark is always a good time and I agree that having players that are quality makes it even better and if nothing else you get to see other teams and players. I remember when the Padres were terrible but I got to see the Big Red Machine, Dodgers, Cubs etc and it was great compared to not having any team at all.
It’s baseball…support your team and enjoy the day
Arenado is going to have a bounce back year and the Cards will compete for the NL Central. Just wait…
Cardinals have done a great job this off season:
a) shedding salary
b) creating opportunity for younger players
c) improving roster to reach NL Central crown
d) all of the above
e) none of the above
