The Giants and right-handed reliever Lou Trivino have agreed to a minor league contract, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The Pro Edge Sports client will be invited to major league camp this spring.
Trivino, 33, hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2022 due to a series of arm injuries. He underwent Tommy John surgery prior to the 2023 campaign and missed all of the 2024 season due to ongoing inflammation in that elbow and a separate shoulder issue. He recently held a bullpen session for scouts — the Giants were among those in attendance — and seemingly has a clean bill of health. By signing in San Francisco, he’ll be reunited with his longtime manager in Oakland, Bob Melvin, at least for spring training.
When he’s been healthy and at the top of his game, Trivino has been a quality high-leverage arm. He throws hard, misses bats and picks up grounders at strong rates. From 2020-22, the righty averaged just under 96 mph on his four-seamer and sinker while pitching to a 3.76 ERA with a 24.5% strikeout rate, 10.4% walk rate and 48.7% grounder rate. In parts of five big league seasons, he’s tallied 37 saves and 52 holds.
The Giants recently shipped out one veteran reliever, lefty Taylor Rogers, in a trade with the Reds that looked to be more about cost-savings than improving for the upcoming season. That left Taylor’s twin brother, Tyler, and righty Camilo Doval as the Giants’ only two relievers with even two years of big league service. If he impresses in camp, Trivino can add a veteran option to a late-inning group that includes Tyler Rogers, Ryan Walker and Doval. Others in the bullpen mix include Sean Hjelle, Erik Miller, Landen Roupp, Tristan Beck, Spencer Bivens and Randy Rodriguez.
Hard to believe its been two years since he’s taken the mound. Sneaky solid pickup for the Giants if he works his way back
And if he can tamp down on the walks.
Low risk move signing Trevino. Melvin must have asked Posey to get Trevino
Transaction would have been much better if Trevino was a left handed reliever
may I suggest feather touch?
Very sneaky. I’m a big Trevino fan. For the cost doval just became that much more expendable for buster today.
Giants arent getting rid of a guy who was an all-star as recently as 2023 for a 33 year old Lou Trevino lmao
@Bri
Certainly not now, but if Trivino remains healthy and performs at his previous ceiling (big stretch), then Doval could be a potentially valuable trade chip for the Giants at the trade deadline if they’re in the thick of the playoff race (bigger stretch)
so could Trivino
This!
@mtb
Doval has youth and years of control that would actually get something in return. Even a best case scenario with Trivino would require a package to get something good, whole Doval would get a package in return
Dovals been floated in trade talks already. I’m not saying 1a 1b here but it’s in play sure
Correction: Doval’s name has been floated in rumors and speculation. There’s zero evidence that any trade talks have occurred.
People forget untouchable is a fools game. We just saw it shock the world on doncic. If talks talk a player is available for the right ask anyone is.
Is Trivino a day one closer in the event of? I think that answer is no today but it’s a dark horse shot at it. Absolutely.
It’s not like he’s breaking the glass on that job like Ashby is. Problem there is they are committed to stretching him when his stuff just plays better in multi inning vs stretched out.
Who said anything about untouchable? It would not be at all shocking if Doval were traded. The only surprising thing would be SF selling low, instead of waiting to see if he can reclaim some value.
And WTH is the rest of your post about? Certainly nothing that I wrote. Again, there’s constant rumors and speculation about numerous players, and 90-95% of them are just that, and nothing more.
Until there’s valid info that the Giants are engaged in trade talks for Doval, it’s just another case of rumors and speculation without any foundation.
You make it seem like doval hasn’t been tossed around openly like a rag doll on the market. He has.
Considering philosophical changes in front office it’s safe to say he is available. I believe he more than likely will be traded by or before as break.
The rest of my post is comparing Trevinos chances to closing in the event of a trade.
It’s not nearly the certainty of say an Aaron Ashby in Milwaukee. Yet the organization or he himself is gung ho on starting. Can’t blame him for the money differences but he’s a nightmare closer waiting to happen.
Whoa, you need to rein in the hyperbole. Saying he’s “been tossed around openly like a rag doll on the market” is not even close to the actual facts.
In the most recent news on 12/9/24 MLBTR posted this:
“Posey downplayed the possibility of trading former closer Camilo Doval ”
Previously om 12/8/24 MLBTR had this:
“While the Giants aren’t actively shopping hard-throwing righty Camilo Doval this winter, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier today that the club is receiving “strong” interest in his services around the league.”
Strong interest is not trade talks, let alone being tossed around on the trade market.
The interest was noted a month earlier on 11/5/24 in a similar article, but again, no trade talks.
Those are the only articles MLBTR posted regarding any speculation on trading Doval. In that light, your rag doll metaphor is sorely lacking in accuracy.
Thank you.
San francisco. I thought he was going back to New york.
I thought he was returning too. Looks like they ran out of spots. They actually might trade a reliever or two now.
Given the arm troubles and extended absence, he’s a long shot. But that’s what MiLB signings are for.
Typically SFG does well with these type of come back pitchers. Can’t see any downside with this move. This guy was a quality reliever, and is not that old. Good bounce back candidate for sure. Let’s play ball !
Welcome to Spring training “Merry Mex”!
