For the second consecutive season, right-hander Dylan Cease is the most talked about player in trade rumors as the winter gives way to Spring Training. The then-White Sox hurler was shipped to the Padres in mid-March of last year, just before San Diego started their season in Seoul. It remains to be seen if the club will turn around and deal him during the spring themselves one year later, but AJ Cassavell of MLB.com notes that Cease made clear he isn’t bothered by the rumors swirling around him at yesterday’s FanFest event.
“You just focus on the task at hand,” Cease said, as relayed by Cassavell. “It’s just part of the business, really.”
Cease went on to note how much he loves San Diego and added that he would “definitely” like to stay in town. It certainly remains possible that he’ll be a Padre in 2025 even if it’s difficult to imagine him returning to San Diego upon hitting free agency this offseason. As Cassavell notes, however, a trade might be the most sensible path for the Padres as they navigate a budget crunch with multiple significant holes in their projected 2025 lineup. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Cease bring back the sort of significant return that could address multiple needs for the Padres while also getting his $13.75MM salary off the books to clear the way for further additions.
With that being said, getting the right deal for Cease may be easier said than done. The Cubs, Twins, and Mets are among the teams that have been connected to Cease in recent days, but there have been some indications from both Minnesota and New York that a trade could be difficult to work out. Dan Hayes of The Athletic reported earlier this weekend that the Padres are asking for “significant major-league value” in Cease talks, adding that rival executives believe the club is “emboldened” by the exceptional return they received from the Yankees in last winter’s Juan Soto deal. Meanwhile, Hayes reports that the Twins are unwilling to part with top prospects like Walker Jenkins, Emmanuel Rodriguez, and Luke Keaschall at this time and prefer to offer a package of big leaguers who can help address San Diego’s needs in the lineup and rotation.
That might sound like the teams match up well at first glance, but Hayes adds that the specifics of the return package figure to be a sitcking point. He suggests that the Padres are likely to ask for one of Joe Ryan or Bailey Ober as the centerpiece of a deal, which is an ask that it’s hard to imagine Minnesota agreeing to given that both are established, quality mid-rotation arms with three years of team control remaining. Hayes notes that the Twins would prefer to offer a package headlined by a young starter like Zebby Matthews or Simeon Woods Richardson that would also include Trevor Larnach and Willi Castro. Woods Richardson posted solid back-of-the-rotation production for the Twins in his rookie season last year, with a 4.17 ERA in 28 starts, while Matthews struggled in nine starts at the big league level but remains the club’s top pitching prospect and is generally believed to project as a #4 starter in the majors long-term.
The value discrepancy between players of Ryan and Ober’s caliber and the likes of Matthews and Woods Richardson is significant, and the sides would need to move significant off their current stances in order for a deal to come together. It appears to be a similar story with the Mets, as Will Sammon of The Athletic recently described Cease coming to Queens as “unlikely” due to the expected acquisition cost. Whether that’s due to a lack of willingness to part with a high-end package in order to land Cease or if the club simply lacks the pieces necessary to get a deal done is unclear, however, as Sammon goes on to mention the club’s failed pursuit of Garrett Crochet earlier this winter. The Mets were among a number of teams interested in Crochet, but he ultimately was dealt to the Red Sox because, as Sammon writes, Boston was able to offer “higher-quality prospects” than the Mets were.
Sammon goes on to suggests that the Mets could swing a deal if the Padres’ asking price comes down through the spring or revisit talks at the trade deadline, when Cease would be less valuable due to an acquiring club no longer being able to extend him the Qualifying Offer. Of course, a Cease trade may be far less likely by the time the summer rolls around. The Padres will have to fill their vacancies in the lineup one way or another before the season begins, and if they manage to do so without dealing Cease it’s difficult to imagine the club then shifting gears and shipping Cease out in the middle of a pennant race unless they’ve fallen out of contention.
mlbnyyfan
LMAO!!! One article says they want to add an arm or two and this one says San Diego still wants to trade Cease. Haha. It must be great for anyone to be a Padre fan.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Padres could trade Cease to Dodgers for Gonsolin, May, and Pages. And break the internet.
Seriously, if Padres could trade Suarez or Adam for a young controllable number four starter, then pitchers and catchers could report in peace.
dsett75
Jokingly, I mentioned the other day that it wouldn’t surprise me if LA traded Gonsolin, May and Muncy and signed Bregman and Flaherty. And Detroit has plenty of possibilities for SD to get Suarez and Cease.
dodgers32
WAY TOO MUCH to give up for 1 year of Cease.
Roguesaw2
Like they wouldn’t sign him to a bazillion dollars deferred contract extension by dinner….

@dodger32 NAH NOT NEARLY ENOUGH FOR CEASE.
Two pitchers coming of significant injuries as well as Muncy who has struggled with injuries for a potential CY Young pitcher?
Pass.

They just won’t Cease talking about trading Cease. That payroll situation must be dire indeed. But you knew it wasn’t sustainable from the beginning, if you knew basic mathematics.

Oh MLBTR you never let us down
Brew’88
lessie, by my count this is the 9th article in mlbtr about a Cease trade rumor in the past 10 days. Yet there is no new news. I guess the big headlines here in this article is that Cease “loves San Diego”.
Yeah okay.

Brew- that about sums it up. To go along with teams haven’t agreed to a deal.

MLBTR is struggling of late. Posting NBA rumors on their MLB site, now posting contradicting articles.
Big whiffa
It’s a great site for about 6 weeks after the season ends and for the month of July. Outside of that, due to the nature of content- they struggle.

It’s been super weird here of late.

I have zero interest in watching the NBA. And the NBA trade was still interesting to me. Everyone looks at a train wreck.
Joe It All
I have been trying to think of a baseball trade to compare to that one and I can’t come up with anything. Who would have thought two first team all NBA players would be dealt for each other. Especially the fact the trade took place mid season. Nobody saw that coming.
MacGromit
I get your point but there is always part of the off season where there is few actual facts and they have to fill the days with speculative and fluff fodder. I don’t like it either but it is just part of the cycle.
BITA
It’s a rumors site and it’s not baseball season. Good lord folks what do you expect?
RyanD44
I expect it to be on an NBA site.
I wonder why MLB.com didn’t have the trade on there. Probably bc it’s a MLB site.
I’d rather have no content than worthless content.
BITA
Do you not understand that Hoopsrumors and MLBtraderumors have a working relationship? The guy who runs Hoopsrumors used to work for this site. Did you really not know that????
If you don’t like it DONT READ IT
RyanD44
Why haven’t I ever seen crossover posting before other than ads trying to get people to crossover?
Like I get that the NBA is a dying brand, and I’m sure their basketball website is struggling to get views so it was probably a desperation move to get clicks, but it just seems like product at MLBTR has gone down substantially recently. More ads, more strange articles, more pushes to buy subscription. I don’t use it nearly as much bc of the ads, and how X has taken over as a up to the date news. I still love MLBTR, but it’s just not what it used to be.
BITA
It’s a really big trade dude.
Again if you don’t like it don’t read it.
It’s February on a baseball site. What are your expectations here?
SomTeaver
It would be nice if the Mets got him but it seems Preller wants more than the Mets (or anyone else) are willing to give up.
Simm
Which means he doesn’t want to trade him and only will for a big return.
BITA
He doesn’t want to trade him. But he understands that the only way to finish off the rest of the team is by dealing one of their high priced players with trade value like Cease.
A deal with David Peterson as the headliner makes a lot of sense. You can dream on him being a top of the rotation guy and the Mets also have outfielders available.
Rexhudler86
@tomseaver. Preller is getting calls of course he going to ask for the sun, sky, moon, and the beach front property in arizona. These rumors mean they get traded at the deadline if they fall out of contention. Caissie from the cubs make sense probably just exploratory at this point, but I can see them going all in for a push. Giants and dbacks closed the gap in the west. It’s going to be close race

They call the guy in Seattle “Trader Jerry”, but A.J Prellar is different in that the majority of his trades actually amount to something.
I’m looking forward to seeing what he’ll do next, since it’s obvious the Friars are trying to get their bloated payroll in line.
Big whiffa
They still call him that ? I was thinking sleepy Jerry this offseason
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
Curious..I know that you guys don’t want to trade Woo, but if the Padres offered something like Cease, Cronenworth, and Salas, do you think they’d consider it?
Bring San Diego Fleet to the NFL
Festa, Woods Richardson, Wallner, padres take back Vasquez and Castro contracts for Cease which should decrease Minnesota payroll in the process. I’d rather have a Vasquez Diaz catching tandem than Campusano Diaz just for defense alone from Vasquez.
bambat
Seems pretty clear Preller doesn’t have to trade Cease unless he gets an incredible haul that would help the team in 2025 and beyond.
Brew’88
which is true of every player on every team with one year left on their contract.
This one belongs to the Reds
The only difference being, it sounds like they have to deal someone as several players are mentioned in trade rumors.
Brew’88
maybe, but the Padres FO hasn’t actually said they won’t exceed the CBT, it’s all media speculation at this point. My guess as a fan, and like everyone else, it’s just a guess, is that they will move one salary (maybe Suarez or Arraez) to stay under CBT. The holes in the rostered position players are few, just LF and DH. They could go with players internally for thos positions. But AJP said yesterday that the Pads would be adding a couple of position players and 1 or 2 additional SPs before opening day. So it doesn’t quite sound like they are in the budget slashing mode that rumors are portending. As a pennant contender, I doubt the team trades Cease for prospects, they would need to get in return players who can help them win now. And losing an ace like Cease to win in 2025 would be quite the unlikely trick to pull off.
Simm
Reds- at the same time they haven’t traded anyone.
So while they maybe fielding offers for guys that doesn’t mean they have to trade them.
Either a team pays the price or the padres keep them. There has been zero indication the padres are willing to trade anyone without an overpay/fair deal.
King Floch
It’s already February and their only real move has been signing a fringey catcher to a very modest 1 year deal.
There’s clearly a budget issue going on in San Diego, and although we can only speculate on the exact extent of it, the fact that they are reportedly listening on guys that should be shoo-ins for the 2025 roster (i.e. Cease and Arraez) does suggest it’s pretty bad.
Brew’88
GMs are always listening to offers, every year, all year, all the time.
Simm
Brew- I agree and would say more likely Suarez than Arraez. I think the padres want Arraez in the lineup.
He isn’t going to bring much back in return. If the padres plan on adding a bat or two, that would turn into 2 bats or 3. While Suarez is easier to replace.
I’d still bet on them trading someone but the amount i’d bet is going down.
Big whiffa
I don’t think they trade anyone. Not sure what their budget looks like in 26 and beyond, but I thinking extending cease is just as likely
Simm
King- they can have budget constraints and still add inexpensive vets.
There is nothing wrong with adding those types of players. I’d argue adding the right vets who at the end of Feb become cheap is the direction they should go. It’s what they did last year at this point in the offseason.
Brew’88
Yeah I agree. Though AJ sure seems to like Suarez, he’s also willing to part with closers without remorse.
There are other creative deals that could happen that we have a hard time envisioning – for example, I loved the salary space created last year when AJ moved Carpenter and Kerr to the Braves. They sent Woo-suk Go and prospects to Miami for Arraez while having Miami pick up Arraez salary. I sure didn’t see that one coming. There are a few valuable prospects other than Salas and De Vries that can be packaged. AJP is also creative enough to ride into the season over CBT and get under later if necessary, if that’s what ownership says he has to do.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I don’t see them extending Cease, I see them keeping him until July and then either going for the wild card with no subtractions, or trading Cease and King mid-year before the trade deadline.
Simm
That’s the most likely scenario atm.
dsett75
I read an earlier article that SD payroll will be 220-230 in 26 after arbitration.
Simm
They have about 70m coming off the books next year.
No high arb guys are currently on the team for 2026.
King Floch
I am so sick of Dylan Cease trade rumors. I thought we were done after he finally got traded to the Padres last year, but AJ’s poor budget management has put us right back where we started.
*insert last name pun here*

I too wish they would Cease
Simm
Is it Prellers fault or the media?
Prellers asking price seems like he doesn’t really want to trade him.

Even if SD doesn’t make another move, they’re a good team that will challenge LA in the NL West…
Big whiffa
They are a good team, and they’ll challenge the rest of baseball for sure but LA has no competition. They are the sun among 29 other candles, smh
BITA
I don’t think they will challenge for a wild card the way it stands now.
Simm
Bita- pretty much every ranking site disagrees with you but that doesn’t mean you will be wrong.
BITA
Most people believe the Padres will make moves to finish off their team. Like I said as it stands now they aren’t very good.
King Floch
You have also said that you don’t think the Orioles are going to contend next year, so I am inclined to disregard your opinions about who is a contender and who isn’t.
It could still change depending on what they do with Cease, King, Arraez, etc., but San Diego certainly looks like a clear wildcard contender to me right now, even if they have an imperfect, very top heavy roster.
BITA
I think the Orioles can make the playoffs but true contender? Not with that rotation.
You said the Orioles were going to replace Burnes with a top end starter. And they didn’t do that at all. So…..
King Floch
I said I expected the O’s add 1 SP that slotted somewhere into the top 3, and I think Sugano meets that criteria (albeit just barely), plus we added a second SP (which I did not expect) in Morton, who raises the floor of the back of the rotation and pushes Kremer from the 4 spot to the 5, which is nice.
It’s not exactly what I wanted, but I am satisfied with it to start the year.
BITA
Orioles didn’t need a barely top end starter they needed an ace. They lost Burnes. They weren’t good enough with Burnes. How are they going to be good enough with a downgrade in their rotation?
The Orioles needed Crochet. And instead he went to a division rival. One that isn’t as concerned about hoarding prospects and draft picks.
GASoxFan
Personally I think the Pads need to rip the bandaid off and do what it takes, even eating money, to move one of the huge contracts. Even if the return is light.
Here’s why. They’re going to break the CBT barrier at this point. They’ve got Cease and King. Their long term Financials *probably* prohibit long term signing of either guy, let’s be honest based on recent pitching prices. Recall the whole cost cutting plus the lawsuit amongst heirs and all the rest.
Because they’re on pace to break the cbt threshold, the draft compensation they’d likely get will drop quite a bit for Cease and king. So by biting the bullet so to speak they can perhaps use a little of the money saved to get a complimentary depth piece or two for the season, and more importantly, expect to net a pair of high draft comp picks in the ’26 draft. So whatever return you settle for, it’s like swapping a pair of lower end prospects for a pair taken high in the early rounds – with the massive bonus pool allocation bump that comes with it, really letting you reach on other picks due to the overage allowances on top of all the rest.
It’s one big picture way to jumpstart restocking the farm
Simm
GA- if they wanted to just restock the farm they could do so by trading players like Cease and King. The others would be a lighter return for players like Arraez and Suarez. They would also be punting the 2025 season which they won’t do.
As far as trading a big contract like Xander he is one (like the others) has a full no trade clause. Which shrinks his already small market. On top of that the padres would have to pay a big chunk of his contract. Let’s say the padres traded him and included 100m to cover idk, his last 4 years. If that’s even enough. Let’s pretend it is.
Xander is owed about 230m the next 9 years. Paying 100m reduces that to 130m the next 9 years (which maybe too high still). That lowers the padres cost from 25m aav to about 11m aav. I don’t see the padres getting a better player than Xander for 14m a year. Especially as inflation makes 14m even less over time. So I’d rather take my chances with Xander at 14m vs whatever they could replace him with. That’s obviously betting that Xander will rebound from last year and be a good player the next few years. That also if someone acquiring him would be willing to pay him 14×9. Which is still a long shot even further reducing the padres savings.
Tatis is really the only big money deal they can move. The fans would burn down the stadium if they traded him.
GASoxFan
Simm- it’s a poison pill situation.
Ideally it’s moving something from the mix of Tatis, Machado, Bogey, Darvish, or Musgrove. But cronenworth/Suarez could play a role.
This isn’t about making a move that brings in some superior player at a cheaper salary to compete in 2025.
It’s also not about who do we get better for equal money.
There are too many big contracts on the books for the revenues and market size, period. You had a detroit-type situation like when ilitch was dying and he ran in the red trying to bring home a trophy. There’s too many top heavy contracts for a sustainable operation.
Simm
Not saying the padres aren’t top heavy but moving anyone but Tatis (big big money guys) doesn’t really save all that much. Padres reportedly offered a top prospect with Xander and no takers. Manny’s last 6 years has an aav of 39m. That’s age 34-40. Nobody is touching these contracts. Sure they could deal some of the others easier.
Tatis isn’t going anywhere.
GASoxFan
Let’s pretend Bogey for a minute since you mentioned him earlier.
I think that if you were to attach 4m/yr in 2025-2029, and 20m/yr in 2030-2033, thats a 100m paydown you referenced.
Bogey would waive his NTC to return to BOS I’d bet, and, he could go back to SS, slide Story to the 2B hole short term. Give Campbell a year in AAA, and, Mayer still needs to work for a while.
If they took a lower return prospect-wise, definitely nobody in the top-5 of bostons farm, I bet they could force a deal to clear the books. For boston’s side, they can eventually release Bogey if need be those last 4 seasons, or, he’s effectively a 5m/season bench piece. Probably tradable.
But 20m/season right now for Bogey is probably a fair market rate. And compared to bregman for the IF makes a better fit at the prices.
It’s a lopsided trade for sure. But *something* needs to happen. The worst deal they’ve got is Machado and they’re going to be stuck with that one
Simm
If Xander was a free agent right now I don’t think he touched even 5 year 100m. Before even counting the other 4 years.
Perhaps if he rebounds this year his stock can go up a bit but he will be a year older so probably not.
I think the padres are stuck with him. Then in 5-7 years from now the padres may just release him and eat the last few years of his deal.
wallabeechamp
The Pobres are reaching “lol Mets “ levels of ridiculousness
DanFan
I would much prefer that they trade Arraez and Suarez and either Peralta or Matsui. But I suppose there is no interest out there even if prospects like Bateman, Lowe, Baez or Lizzaraga are attached.
Brew’88
Hope they don’t trade Baez, he might help them in 2025. But when the Pads unloaded Carpenter’s $5M AAV to Braves last year by attaching Kerr I was impressed. Doing something similar with Peralta and especially Matsui would be more challenging given their contracs.
padrepapi
Schildt pointed out and Fanfest yesterday during his press conference an interesting fact about Yuki Matsui. During the 2nd half he struck out 33.3% of batters of batters and walked only 4.6%. Those numbers jumped from 23.5% and 13.5% respectively from the first half. It wasn’t all perfect as he gave up homers at a much higher clip in the 2nd half.
I could definitely see them moving Wandy Peralta in a creative trade. He was really good with NYY. Maybe give up a fringe prospect and offer to cover 50% of his 2026 and 2027 salaries if he doesn’t opt out after 2025. I saw a Mets fan bring him up recently for their pen so maybe he is a fit there.
Swapping Saurez for an outfielder making no more than 4-5m would help a ton. Just need someone to give you good at bats hitting towards the bottom of the lineup.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
I think if they move Wandy, it’d be as part of a large enough package to where they don’t have to eat salary.
Brew’88
@papi. Yep, Matsui is a lot different than Carpenter, in that the reason for moving him would be solely salary dump, since he’s pretty good. And yeah Matsui’s contract would be difficult to move, Wandy would be easier to move (dump) for sure.
Brew’88
February 2 is the 1-year anniversary of the Padres signing Jurickson Profar to a one year contract for $1M
Aaron Sapoznik
The Cubs make a lot of sense in a matchup with the Padres for Dylan Cease. Chicago currently has a fairly solid rotation but have lacked a true power arm atop their staff for some time. Cease would satisfy that need.
Cubs PBO Jed Hoyer is in the final year of his contract and might need to reach the postseason in order to retain his job. He’s not afraid to deal for a potential high end player who’s in his final year of arb eligibility as shown with his recent acquisition of star RF Kyle Tucker from the Astros.
The Cubs and Padres also have a history of making blockbuster deals as evident with the trade of ace Yu Darvish going to San Diego 4 years ago in a package that included top OF prospect Owen Cassie landing in Chicago. Cassie is now among the 7 top-100 prospects in the Cubs system, most of whom are considered ready for their MLB debuts as soon as 2025.
The Cubs don’t currently have a place on their active roster for most of these elite prospects. This could also give them the motivation to move a rostered player or two which would open a spot for more of their top prospects in Chicago. The Padres could demand a player from either or both categories from the Cubs in a potential deal for Cease.
In addition to Cease, the Cubs and Padres have also been linked to each other in recent trade rumors involving Padres closer Robert Suarez and SP Michael King. When it comes to so many rumors, where there is smoke there is often fire.
DanFan
Starts with Assad, Brown and Alcantara.
Bucket Number Six
Probably just Assad, Alcantara, and a lower tier prospect would get it done.
Simm
I agree with the potential matchup. Also everything you said about Jed. He misses the playoffs after getting Tucker he prob doesn’t survive.
The issues remains Prellers asking price. Was reported he wanted Shaw+. So unless something changes a deal is unlikely.
With that said I do think they can make a deal without Shaw.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Preller yesterday:
“Gotta add a bat or two, gotta add an arm or two.”
Writer today:
[Weellllll… I think the best way to do that is to trade Cease. Here’s also what Cease thinks about the rumors swirling. Some of which were started by me.]
That’s it. Note that Preller didn’t mention anything about the CBT. Learn to filter out the noise and stop accepting opinions as facts for your own sanity’s sake.

Official news padres are out on sasaki.
CrikesAlready
Trade him and start the fire sale already!
Sell the club to some delusional liberal tech oligarch who’ll hypocritically move the team from California to a low-tax state.
Two players have already publicly referenced avoided signing with the Padres because of the ownership problems that will surely end up in court.
BITA
The Tigers could make sense as a trade partner for Cease. They have an infielder available either Torkelson or someone else. They have lefty outfielders perhaps Carpenter who will make league minimum in 2025. Tigers could also use Suarez. And the Tigers have some interesting pitchers they could make available. Something like Mize and Torkelson would be fun. Lot of upside there.
Simm
Yeah idk how well the tigers matchup in a trade but they should have interest in both cease and Suarez.
BITA
The Tigers match up really well. Like I said they have an extra infielder Torkelson or someone else. They don’t have an extra outfielder but they have too many lefty outfielders they could trade one then sign a righty to balance things out. And they have some high upside rotation depth.
Simm
What about pitching. I don’t see the padres trading cease without getting pitching back. Not just some pen arm.
BITA
Do you not know who Casey Mize is? Number 1 overall draft pick a few years ago. Look him up……
Simm
I know who he is, I also know he has struggled.
I wasn’t trying to be combative, I haven’t spent much time looking at the tigers options. So I was actually asking since perhaps you have.
BITA
I am not a Tigers fan.
He’s a former number 1 overall pick who has had some injury problems. The key piece would be Carpenter he has 4 years of control left and is a pretty good player.
Roguesaw2
Mize is a distressed asset, but he’s not junk. Tigers have some interesting lower lever pieces to wotk with, too. I could see Carpenter/Mize and two or three rookie ball guys working.
padrepapi
Nice way of putting it regarding Mize. He’d be a good project for Ruben Niebla to work with and a fresh start would be good for him so he can lose the stigma of being a #1 overall pick bust and just an arm with three years of control for his new team to try to unlock.
Kerry Carpenter would be a nice get and a great fit in SD providing 4 years of control would be very appealing. A lefthanded bat with above average power would be a great fit.
2-3 rookie ball type prospects would help the farm potentially.
Maybe they can add Wandy Peralta and his 4m salary to the deal to get it to the finish line.
flagsfly4ever
The Padres will most likely be fine. Sure this year they’re not spending like normal. However, anyone who has followed them for any amount of time has seen Preller pull out the rabbit out of a hat. Just look at last year as an example. Neither Cease nor Arraez were in the roster at this point in the season. Neither were Solano or Peralta. Sure things look bad, and they’re definitely not ideal, but even with the inner turmoil, the business side will still continue. Preller has a job and will execute it to the best of his ability. Even though not every trade/purchase/pursuit has worked out, he still has a better track record for success than failure. I’d personally give him about a 60-70% success mark and a 30-40% failure rate. A GM’s job is always a gamble and if you’re winning 60% or more, that’s a winning record.

Last night’s Shocking Trade in the NBA can be related in MLB terms like this.. KC Royals trade Bobby Witt Jr. to the L.A. Dodgers for Freddie Freeman…Even though Freeman is a top 1st Baseman in the game, he’s in his 30’s and you are trading one of the top 5 players in the game in Witt who’s in his mid 20’s and who is already so beloved in KC….This is what kills your fan base… If this doesn’t lead to a championship in Dallas this season, their franchise will probably never recover from this as a franchise in every aspect..
