Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman led his team to the World Series championship in 2024, with series MVP honors to prove it. That postseason run came at the expense of his health, however, as he played through a bone bruise and sprain in his right ankle that eventually required him to undergo surgery in early December. At the time, the Dodgers suggested that Freeman would be able to “participate in baseball activities” during Spring Training, but that vague timeline did not set a date for when he would be ready to participate in games again.
Freeman himself offered a bit of clarity on the situation to reporters during the Dodgers FanFest event today. As noted by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Freeman has resumed swinging a bat again but has yet to start running to this point. With the start of Spring Training a matter of weeks away, it’s hardly a surprise that Freeman indicated he won’t be available for the first games of Cactus League play this spring. Freeman did say that he “expects” to be ready for the start of the Dodgers’ season in Tokyo on March 18, though of course with that just six weeks away a setback in his recovery could alter that timeline.
That Freeman should be ready for the start of the season is surely a relief for Dodgers fans, though it would hardly be a surprise if the club opted to be as careful with him as possible in order to ensure he starts the season on the right foot with as good of health as possible. The slugger’s .282/.378/.476 slash line in 147 games for the Dodgers in his age-34 campaign last year was a modest step back from his back-to-back top-4 MVP finishes in 2022 and ’23 but was still more than enough to put him on the shortlist for the very best first basemen in the sport last year. Freeman once again figures to help anchor the Dodgers lineup alongside fellow former MVPs Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani in 2025. It’s a lineup that largely looks the same as last year, though Michael Conforto has replaced Jason Heyward in the outfield mix while Hyeseong Kim has taken over for Gavin Lux at the keystone.
Aside from Freeman, however, the club appears to be generally healthy headed into Spring Training when looking at players who are expected to impact the 2025 team on Opening Day. Right-hander Tyler Glasnow was shut down in August due to an elbow sprain, but Dodgers Insider relays that Glasnow spoke at today’s fan event as well. The right-hander revealed that he’s resumed throwing and is feeling “as good as [he’s] ever felt.” The 31-year-old is one of the most dominant hurlers in the sport when healthy, but his 22 starts last year were a career high as he’s constantly battled injury woes throughout his career. With Glasnow seemingly poised to be ready for the start of the season, the Dodgers will surely hope that their plans to use a six-man rotation this year in order to accommodate Ohtani in his return to pitching can help Glasnow stay healthy enough to pitch for them in the postseason this year after he missed last year’s World Series run.
Turning back to the position player side of things, veteran infielder Miguel Rojas joined Freeman in playing through injury during the postseason and underwent sports hernia surgery after the season concluded. As noted by Ardaya, Rojas spoke about his recovery process during today’s fan event and revealed that he suffered from a post-surgery infection that delayed his ability to rehab for a couple of weeks. Fortunately, that now appears to be behind him as Rojas indicated he remains on track to be fully ready for Spring Training when it begins later this month. The addition of Kim in conjunction with Betts’s move back to the infield leaves Rojas without an everyday role headed into 2025, but he managed to carve out a role for himself in 103 games under similar circumstances last year despite a trip to the injured list.
As for players who aren’t expected to be ready for Opening Day, Ardaya notes that right-hander Emmet Sheehan provided an update on his recovery from Tommy John surgery for the first time since he went under the knife last May. The right-hander has resumed throwing off a mound at this point in his rehab and added that he hopes to start pitching in rehab games come May or June. That timeline would put him on the mound for those games just over a year after his surgery, putting him more or less on track for a normal recovery and to be a depth option out of the rotation or bullpen for L.A. in the second half this year.
Wait, Sheehan? The ginger guitar guy? LA bought him too?!
Sure, and the Freeman referred to is Morgan !
They needed a Justin Turner lookalike that could also sing…
They’ve bought everyone else so why not Ed Sheeran and Morgan Freeman. They’ll probably buy everyone else’s mascots next in a grinchlike move to round it out.
Imagine the fantastic narration of Morgan Freeman announcing Ohtani’s AB. Each time would be a 120 minute walk up!
“For (said pitcher) it was going to be the longest night of his life…….”
As the Tigers get better, their fans seem to whine more. Right, motor city?
Nah. We are a positive bunch. The Dodgers are the new Yankees for a few years until someone else takes over the role. We all need someone to hate on and I never got over losing my favorite player Kirk Gibson to LA. They are a well run organization though and continually roll out competitive teams. You can’t take that away. But…you can get in on the harmless jokes!
When the diamondbacks overpaid for Zack Grienke, that was “buying” something. All the players the Dodgers get want to be here so badly they agree on deferrals. You’re just another hater of the best franchise in the game right now
@Kew
The players aren’t losing money just because it’s deferred. What’s likely happening is that the Dodgers are going to use the deferred money and invest it thru Guggenheim Partners as they would any other client of there’s. The rules allow them to do so and to actually split the proceeds with the player. So it’s not benevolent like they’re willing to accept less to help the team out. The team DOES benefit with regard to saving on the lux tax but they also benefit from using the players deferred money in capital investments.
@Knicks The value needed to accrue to payout of deferred amount has to be funded annually at time of deferral. That is the amount counted against luxury tax. There are no savings on either.
MLBTR took time to spell this out in black and white for all. It’s sad these comments still exist…
Clipper
Reds have the Singer and Yankees are stuck paying for the DJ
@MLB – Reds had the Law, but the Yankees have the Judge.
The Yankees DJ plays all that Jazz.
Ha ha. Not bad.
Why is it that the dodgers are the prized team that get to open their season in a foreign country in back to back years? Korea last year, Japan this year? Padres and cubs are the other teams, but the dodgers getting that nod two years in a row seems like it’s intentional. Like they already aren’t the most popular team in the whole world with an already top not Asian market pipeline set in stone for years to come. They play in Korea and get a Korean star, they play in Japan while getting numerous Japanese players. Would it not make sense to send another team to gaugue interest instead of marketing all of mlb around the dodgers? I’m not hating, but it is like damn the dodgers get whatever they want, largest TV deal in sports, all the superstars, and even the honor of opening back to back seasons in Korea and Japan respectively while other teams do not get that chance.
Well, think about words that start with Oh and end with tani.
Exactly my point. MLB markets the whole league around one player and one team even though there are plenty of other Japanese players on other teams. But dodgers keep getting exposure That other teams don’t, and you wonder why the dodgers have a leg up on getting Japanese players. They didn’t market the angels in Japan, but oh they sure do now that he’s a dodger. But Korea and japan in back to back years? C’mon if a portion of the population got to see other teams first hand, they might have a chance at players, but also that international popularity as well that MLB only seems to want to give to the dodgers. They could have easily kept the cubs for seiya, but added in any other team to face them, instead it’s of course the dodgers that are chosen.
Doesn’t necessarily mean every japanese player is good.
Completely agree. This shouldn’t be allowed. This gives a team with every possible advantage more advantages and that’s not right.
Yeah because that’s definitely what I said or was getting at…. there are plenty of good Japanese players that don’t play for the dodgers. We could have had Kodai senga and the mets pitch against Shota. We could have had the angels and yusei pitch against kodai or Shota as well. Kenta had a down year but has been a pretty good mlb pitcher. Although defensively limited yoshida is a very good offensive talent. There is more good than not Japanese players across the league that doesn’t have to revolve around the dodgers. How many times do us here in the states but even abroad in Japan have to see or hear about ohtani for us to know how good and generational of a talent he is?
What exactly is the problem?

I said back to back years. I don’t have a problem with any team getting international exposure. But if you are going to do that more teams need to participate than the dodgers and their “opponent”
It’s good to be the king.
Padres had back to back appearances in 23/24. Cry some more please
Dodgers and Cubs are going to Japan for obvious reasons. Dodgers actually tried to get out of the trip a few months ago because its a grind for the players and staff. MLB pressed them to go. It’s the main team the Japanese fans want to see. What was it 15 million viewers in Japan of the Dodgers-Yanks World Series last fall? The numbers were huge. The demand for the Dodgers there is huge. But I’m sure Tokyo would equally like to see Marcel Ozuna and Ronald Acuna.
Yeah because someone has an opinion it means I’m crying, good God just shut the hell up.
Exactly my point, it’s major league baseball, not necessarily the dodgers themselves. If the dodgers tried to get out of it that just shows MLB is marketing the whole league around the dodgers. I’m not saying this as a rallying cry to have the braves participate, we literally have no Asian pipeline, but other teams do and they get chosen over for the dodgers in back to back seasons. Dodgers and padres got Korea last year so why not have it say the mets vs cubs in Japan this year? Kodai vs Shota? That would be bad ass, especially in their home country!
It’s also different having one of those games in Mexico, compared to back to back seasons in korea and japan respectively. Most players that come from Mexico are ameatures and you don’t see high end Mexican players being courted and posted for the entire league, Korea and japan do however have those types of players. But yep I’m just crying. Bring something to the table next time instead of being a troll.
excuse me?
I was replying to Murray rothbard over here trolling me. I don’t know why it put my comment under your response. I apologize. I did however respond to you the comment after that one.
ok.
@braves, Your posts seem kinda whiney. Sports leagues prosper more when their big stars are in the spotlight.
To expect Ohtani to maybe only be a part of the “rotation” of various Japanese (or Korean) MLB players showcased in games in Asia, you’re indicating that you somehow expect money (and further expanding fan bases to further increase revenue) to not be the prime motivator.
To have a regular season series during Spring Training is not exactly an advantage logistically.
“Yeah, let’s have Yoshida and the Red Sox instead Dothan and the Dodgers!”
No intelligent person would seriously argue that as a way to best promote the sport.
*Ohtani and the….
This is the main takeaway. The teams and players would just as soon not open their seasons overseas. It is done to market MLB. So this something else for fans to moan about as though it makes any difference.
@Bivouac-Sal
You and your facts!
(Great comment.)
If the Jays would’ve signed Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Sasaki the Jays would be playing in Japan in March. The team with the most Japanese stars are playing in Japan. Makes sense from a marketing perspective. It’s not the Dodgers lining all this up, it’s MLB sending teams the Japanese fans want to see.
You’re making a non-event into a big thing. Most teams I’d think would not want to do these long trips ahead of the season. Getting your players ready early has injury risks, especially the pitchers. Then there are the media commitments when they get there. It’s definitely a grind, and I can see teams not wanting to do it if given the choice.
Yeah, Ohtani is going to get you an opportunity. Once in a generation players who happen to be Japanese, game played in Japan, on a team with a strong run. You’ll excuse MLB for picking the Dodgers this year. I’d think they would round out going forward. Korea is not the same as Japan. So, if the next Japan game includes the Dodgers, whine away.
@Braves You mean the Dodgers who just won World Series and the same Dodgers who have most marketable player in the history of the sport?? Seems pretty obvious why they ve been selected in back to back years. MLB is trying to market the sport not bolster marketing for a team that’s lacking.
Yeah market the sport around one team when there is 29 others. Acting like there aren’t a ton of other great superstar players around the league. It’s just stupid to say other teams are lacking because they don’t have ohtani on their roster. All it does ot make Japanese and Korean players want to play for the dodgers even more than they already do while other teams don’t get that extra boost in popularity. Ohtani and the dodgers can still be marketed, i mean they are world champions and have a roster full of allstars, and ohtani will still be the best player in the majors so marketing will never be an issue whatsoever, but for them to be one of the only teams getting recognition is annoying when other teams would kill for just a smidgen of that marketing and international popularity. More marketing brings more money, more international exposure brings more international talent, that alongside their record breaking TV deal and they will forever be king with no other teams even being able to sniff it. Call Me a hater, say I’m crying, I don’t even care at this point. The dodgers just because they have so many good players and so much money doesn’t mean that MLB should market a whole entire league after 1 singular team in a 30 team sport!
MLB wanted to tap into the Ohtani cash market .
MLB sends the Dodgers to international showcases because they’ll bring back the most money for EVERYONE & guarantee the event’s success. No conspiracy. Just good old fashioned capitalism.
Capitalism is a fraud
Oh jeez, here he goes again.
BITA, then give me all of your money!
You won’t need it because I promise I’ll take care of you!
The league wants high ratings. There’s been plenty of other teams to play outside the country, especially in Japan. You guys spend more time crying about the dodgers than your own teams.
mlb.com/news/baseball-games-played-outside-the-us-…
Yep definitely crying. No I clearly said back to back years. Why don’t you read next time.
The Dodgers have been involved in promoting baseball in Japan since the ’50’s. Baseball clinics, exhibition series, front office mentoring. The success you see the Dodgers having in recruiting players from that region is a direct result of all those decades of foundation building. Walter O’Malley had the foresight and commitment to start the process while other owners were content to sit back and watch.
MLB approaches a few teams but they lose a home series ie revenue from tickets & parking & beer/food sales.
Those said teams are dumb I will most definitely give you that.
@Braves_saints_celts
Believe it or not, some teams don’t want to go overseas on two 12-14 hour flights for a short trip because it’s undeniably disruptive to players’ preparation for the season. Dodgers is one org who have all of their players on the same page for it.
I get that, I really do, but out of 30 teams I’m pretty sure more than just the cubs and dodgers would be down for it. I don’t mind the dodgers participating either my thing is in back to back years it seems a bit unfair. Like the dodgers and padres had Korea last year so why couldn’t this year be the cubs and some other team? Give other teams a chance at international popularity and a slim chance at gaining a player or two from the country in the future. I know the people of japan love ohtani and the dodgers, but I also know they would show up and show out for other Japanese players as well. My opinion was say the cubs and mets, kodai vs Shota. Two great MLB pitchers from Japan battling it out in front of their home countrie’s fans. It would be awesome.
MLB can push for more teams to have shortened Spring Training to run games simultaneously in Japan, Korea, London, and Mexico City. The hosting cities will welcome it every time. I really think it’s about getting teams and players onboard about the idea. Then it’s getting game network providers (and advertisers) sold because they’ll have a different target TV demographics for those specific games due to their atypical airing times.
@braves, MAYBE, if LAD don’t win in ’25, they won’t be back in N Asia in ’26.
But IF LAD go back to back as champs, there will likely be third in a row for LAD in Asia to start the ’27 season
Simply put, they draw crowds. Follow the money. Always.
Your Braves will get a chance for some foreign travel as soon as they stop hating Asians. What I just said is ridiculous, right? Read out loud what you posted and see what was the dumbest statement.
@fox471 Dave
Perhaps something is being misinterpreted? I did not get that impression at the slightest. This is one of the better thread discussions by MLBTR user standards.
How in the he’ll is that what you got out of everything I’ve said? I’ve been championing for other teams to get a chance, even the braves rival in the mets. The braves don’t have an Asian player, nor do they have an Asian pipeline, so why should they go over teams that do? I agree the braves need to open themselves up to the Asian market, but trying to turn this topic into me being a racist braves fan might be the most stupid thing out of this whole discussion yet.
I get what you are saying, but it wouldn’t change anything. The Reds would still be the Reds, the Pirates would still be cheap as hell, and the fish gonna fish.
The only thing that would happen would be that ratings go down and less ‘welfare’ checks for the cheap owners that can’t be bothered to spend on players anyways.
Well said. The Dodgers are the Jacksonville Jaguars of MLB.
Before you criticize this site for the topics they cover, I would respectfully suggest that you purchase a membership. Until then, exercise you’re right to just simply not click and read what you don’t want to read for free.
Apologies to Braves_
my post was intended as a reply to Mikenmn and the comment below suggesting the website focus on topics other than LAD (which, of course they)
You are right, I would expect next year to have the White Sox & Rockies play in Japan…
If I could make a comment to the folks who run this admirable website, I’d love to see more articles about teams other than the usuals suspect. I realize there’s more action with the marque teams, but how about a consistent effort to highlight other teams. If there’s not enough detail/something fresh then make it a three team article.. Just a suggestion,
Nah. Dodgers bring the views. Do you see how many comments the Dodger articles get? Websites want traffic and engagement, LA Dodgers content gets a lot of both.
I get the business aspect. But what I would also say is MLBTR puts out roughly ten stories a day. By definition there’s repetition. They could add an 11th about teams other than the mega-ones. And I say that as a Yankees fan. I want to find out what’s going on elsewhere.
Fair point Mike. But in some cases what is going on elsewhere is nothing.
They do that in their daily opener posts. Then when you click the link for the referenced article for a small market team, there isn’t much substance behind it besides a local writer’s/team beat reporter’s opinions without any cited sources. The big market teams with better PR reps feed the media with insider quotes daily. That’s the nature of the beast so we can’t blame MLBTR.
AAA Oklahoma City’s rotation should be deep w/talent n they got more kid Ps coming up. Logjam in the pipeline. Abundant young pitching is bout best problem a team can have. Which 1s to keep n which 1s to move is where it gets tricky, don’t pull another Pedro Martinez n casually deal generational ace away.
6 pitcher rotation? But the starters pitch less innings yet the salaries go up? Right
Yeah they should get paid by the hour.
Wonder what it would calculate out to by the pitch? Hrmm…
MLB as we know it took a step backward when Ohtani went to the Dodgers.
MLB is now faces the temptation to “orchestrate” or rather “encourage” a Dodgers dynasty.
You can build a dynasty/empire for only for a period of time before the public, saturated with entertainment options, goes elsewhere.
In 1994 the strike nearly ended baseball and yet MLB believes that it is above that kind of disinterest again.
One more strike or labor issue and MLB, which is teetering on losing more ground to the NFL and NBA, could face significant disengagement by fans universally.
The Dodgers cucnundrum is pushing MLB fanbases to their limit.
Ok, Pads Fans.
@tow
everything you post is negative whether it is moaning about the state of your Padres, and every move they don’t make or do make or how the Dodgers are ruining baseball. Lighten up. Try to find something to enjoy.
try using some facts TOW. MLB attendance is up considerably compared to pre-strike figures.

Ah towinagain – red alert! Padre in the house.
Dodger notes: Won the 2025 World Series
And the 2020 World Series.
And the 2026 World Series.
Too soon?
Yet another over-30 pitcher coming off an arm injury saying he never felt better . . . in early February before Spring Training camps open.
In the best shape of his life, I’m sure.
And the over/under on him making more than 20 starts is?
His injury history is less than encouraging.
He started 22 games in ’24 and 21 games in ’23, with the injuries.
Yes, we know he’s been injured a lot AND he’s a year older.
frightening. probably shouldn’t play at all.
He certainly isn’t worth the money.
OMG give it a rest. What’s your team’s staff look like?
88 win or bust
“… with as good of health as possible”
Oh for an editor with as good of English as possible.
