For much of the offseason, a Nolan Arenado trade seemed inevitable. But spring training is now rolling along and he’s still a Cardinal. Today, Katie Woo of The Athletic takes an extensive look at the twists and turns of the winter. Many of the details came out over the past few months but the piece also provides some new tidbits and extra context.
Arenado’s no-trade clause was clearly a key part of the offseason narrative and the club’s efforts to trade him. Reports throughout the winter suggested there was a narrow group of clubs he was willing to join, which Woo confirms in her overview. Arenado told president of baseball operations John Mozeliak that he was willing to waive his no-trade for five clubs: the Yankees, Dodgers, Padres, Red Sox and Astros.
The first three clubs on that list never seemed especially interested. The Yankees were focused on Juan Soto at the start of the offseason. After missing out there, they pivoted to getting Max Fried, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. The Dodgers have Max Muncy at third and didn’t seem keen on a switch. The Padres have Manny Machado at the hot corner. Arenado was reportedly willing to move to a new position but the Friars have budgetary concerns that made a fit tough regardless.
It’s well known by now that the Astros were interested and seemed to have a deal lined up, but Arenado blocked it. Reporting has suggested that Arenado was open to going to Houston but was a bit concerned by the club trading Kyle Tucker and seemingly moving on from Alex Bregman. Woo’s reporting aligns with that framing, with Arenado wanting some time to think about the possibility of becoming an Astro. She writes that he was aware they might move on while he was taking some time to ponder the idea, which is what happened. They quickly signed Christian Walker to cover first base, which effectively locked Isaac Paredes into the third base spot.
That left the Red Sox as the best landing spot for Arenado, with Boston genuinely interested. However, they bolstered their infield by waiting out Bregman and signing him, taking them out of the running for Arenado.
Woo reports that other clubs checked in about Arenado’s availability, including the Royals, Tigers, Mariners and Angels. Those were all sensible on-paper landing spots. The Royals were looking to add a big bat to the lineup and could bump Maikel Garcia to a utility role. The Tigers were involved in the Bregman market, making him a six-figure offer, clearly indicating a willingness to add an established third baseman ahead of prospect Jace Jung. The infield had been a target for the Mariners this winter, who eventually added Donovan Solano and re-signed Jorge Polanco. The Angels were looking to add at third base with Anthony Rendon no longer reliable, eventually signing Yoán Moncada. However, none of those clubs made progress with the Cardinals, as they were informed that Arenado wasn’t interested in waiving his no-trade protection for them.
All of that led to Mozeliak recently declaring that Arenado would stay a Cardinal, suggesting that he would have to change his team preferences in order for a deal to come together. That doesn’t seem likely to come to pass. Arenado has a two-year-old kid and is apparently only open to uprooting his family under very specific circumstances. It’s long been reported that Arenado is primarily motivated by winning but it appears that his off-field circumstances are also playing a notable role in his decision making. “I don’t see myself changing that list ever,” Arenado said. “I have a family now. … To be willing to pick up my family and move them, it has to be something that’s worth it.”
That’s his right as a player with a no-trade clause, though it leaves the Cardinals in an awkward spot. They are doing a reset, trying to turn the franchise away from upgrading the big league roster to a focus more on player development. It’s unclear how long it will take them to make a full-throated attempt at competing again. For now, Arenado is still on the team, which his contract running through 2027. He’ll be 36 years old in the final year of that pact.
It’s possible a trade could come together at the deadline or in another offseason, but it seems it would have to involve a change at one of Arenado’s preferred destinations. Muncy is in the final guaranteed year of his deal, so perhaps a move to the Dodgers for 2026 is possible, though they could keep Muncy around for ’26 via a $10MM club option. Goldschmidt is only on a one-year deal, so the Yankees might have more interest in an infield addition next winter. Bregman could opt out of his Boston deal, though they have a number of infield prospects likely to be coming up this year. Perhaps the Padres would have interest next winter after Luis Arráez, Dylan Cease and Michael King hit free agency, with Robert Suarez having the change to opt-out as well. A significant injury or two could always change the calculus somewhere.
“If something comes up and it makes sense, I’ll certainly get with him and we’ll talk about it,” Mozeliak said over the weekend. “But it’s not something where I’m getting up every morning and chasing the waiver wire or chasing injuries. I think from our fan perspective, from our team perspective, from our perspective, he is a part of the Cardinals.”
It’s an interesting end to an offseason where Mozeliak regarded an Arenado trade as a top priority. The Cards wanted to reduce payroll and open up some playing time for younger players. They could have dropped the payroll in other ways, such as by trading guys like Ryan Helsley or Erick Fedde, but haven’t shown much interest in doing that in the short term. Perhaps the Cardinals will end up being one of the most interesting clubs to watch when the July deadline rolls around, whether Arenado is likely to move or not.
What talks? Oh you mean the talks where nobody who has the money to pay him or needs him is anywhere he wants to go talks. Those talks?
“What talks”…I believe guys like Arenado earned their NTC clauses by being 5 & 10 guys, but if I’m a team I wouldn’t ever put a NTC in a negotiated contract.
They’re just too complicating and difficult to deal with when your team needs change. I pretty much feel the same way about opt-outs. You’re either in or you’re out, there’s no half-way ins in my book.
Let’s turn the tables just a bit. player takes longer-term extension with a hometown discount. NTC seems fair
Unless you are Jed Hoyer. Then you give them both money and NTC’s. And throw in some opt outs for free.
@mike156
Let’s give that table another half turn. Guy says he’ll waive his NTC, but only for one of his selected handful of contending teams. But wait, then he says no no no … AFTER his GM made a deal with one of those teams!
Wondering if he’s something of disingenuous prima-donna, seems kind of fair too, no?
So now, he’s stuck on a team that doesn’t want his services anymore – and isn’t trying to contend – instead of one that is. Great! You know, come to think of it, maybe what spooked him the most about joining the Astros, was that they actually thought he might be a halfway decent replacement for the guy the that wasn’t going play there anymore. Perhaps that left him questioning the Astros good judgement. And maybe he’s right.
Seems fair to drop Astros after the traded Tucker and failed to sign Bregman. Clearly, Nolan viewed this as a significant detriment to playoffs and elected to change his mind based on the Astros change of circumstances.
Not like he pulled a rope a dope on them if you look at the full picture.
Arenados list was to narrow down the buyers for stl. That list is not blindly granting any future trade proposal with a yes. He said no to HOU, at that time.
I mean, the Astros are a hella lot more likely to be playing in October than the Cards.
Does Arenado prefer the Dodgers over the Astros too?
Let’s turn the table a little more, maybe it will burn enough energy to stop you from crying.
Arenado has not played 5 years with the Cards. The Rockies gave him that NTD.
mlb fan: Show me a team that refuses to be flexible and responsive to player/agent demands in contract negotiations, and I’ll show you a team that doesn’t sign as free agents or retain any elite players and eventually fires its front office people.
The talks where they shut down players like Stroman because an aging, overpaid third basemen with a .719 OPS is worth an elite return.
They weren’t looking for an elite return. They just weren’t looking for the putrid stroman. The guy is the biggest clubhouse cancer in baseball. He’s going to be so surprised when he hits free agency again and has to take half of comparable pitchers bc of all the personality and makeup concerns.
More like the Cards shut down that idea because they didn’t like the prospect of Stroman pitching enough innings to trigger his 2026 option at another $18M negating a large portion of the contract dollar savings they were hoping to get moving Arenado. There’s nothing in the CBA that says other teams have to be willing to take NY’s garbage off their hands when they tire of having them around.
Well they could control that by skipping his turn in the rotation. But we all know an unhappy Stroman is a Jimmy Butler Clone Stroman. Plus it would trigger an MLBPA grievance. Plus they’re not trying to swap bad contracts, They want to ELIMINATE it. Not sure what they’re doing really, But I know one thing having the old POBO and the new POBO in the building at the same time is a REALLY BAD idea!
I don’t think there was any scenario where they were going to get big savings on the contract unless they give him a half year to improve and build his value back up.
Stroman’s option probably could have been managed. If he pitches well then he’s worth the option and easy to trade or hold onto for a playoff run. If he continues like last year it would be pretty easy to stick him in the bullpen and avoid the option and a grievance.
Easy to trade? I think that’s been proven a complete falsehood by the last 4 months. LMAO
Arenado is still a significantly better player than Stroman, and while Stroman doesn’t make as much money (except for when he will in 2027), he’d still be a large salary over the same three year period coming back in return that would partially defeat the purpose of trading Arenado in the first place.
As such, the Cardinals are much better off keeping Arenado than to even entertain the idea of trading him for Stroman.
He’s been pitching well the last 4 months? What league?
STL used their NTC, regarding Stroman.
Boring. Boring. Boring.
Isn’t this the first time it was known that Arenando would approve a trade to the Yanks?
Cardinals want to dump his salary. Yankees want STL to take Stroman back in any deal. But Yankees probably don’t see it worth the conversation unless substantial salary is covered by Cardinals either by paying a portion of Arenado’s contract of simply taking Stroman
I think another piece of it is that the Yankees don’t want to take up a roster spot with an older, declining player. Not for three years. They don’t want to find themselves in another LeMahieu/Donaldson/ARod situation. It costs a roster spot and paying a player that they have released.
No, I read it months ago. The Yankees weren’t on Arenado’s list because the talks fell through before he gave the Cardinals his list.
Arenado grew up a Yankees fan. He tried to get the Rockies to trade him there in 2020 but the Cards were the only team to bid (ironically because Goldschmidt is his best friend in baseball and Goldy convinced him to approve it).
Texas, low taxes and booming economy. Astros are a winning club even after losing those two. Dont get him rejecting going to Houston, big mistake. Maybe closer to this years deadline he can go to a contender if he plays well. Injuries do happen.
I know they’ve been the behemoth, but they’re aging, with a bit of a step-back mentality (not full on, but certainly trading Tucker is future oriented) and not a lot of obvious help on the farm.
Ultimately too, some people just have stronger preferences where they want to live. Nothing wrong with a guy not wanting to move to Texas. It ain’t for everybody.
2024 was Houston’s last dance with the core (that won championships) but now their roster is breaking and could be horrible in 2026
Do I think they will win the division this year? Probably but I would be shocked if they made it to the ALCS
I know people hate basketball comparisons but this reminds me of the 2019 rockets where even though they traded for Russell Westbrook it was obvious that a rebuild was coming
The Astros are still the strong favorite to win the division and the AL is much less scary than the NL. They aren’t the team they were a few years ago, but they are still fully capable of contention.
84 is roughly the win projection for Texas, Houston and Seattle. There is no heavy favorite.
It’s going to be a three-way race to the end in the AL West. Think more like 2023.
Texas in a run away. Most talented by far.
They didn’t achieve goal 1, 2 or 3 of the offseason hahaha. This season is going to be bizarre
I was hoping the article would be blank. Would have made more sense.
Enough with Arenado. He’s not getting moved at least till July.
Maybe talk about the ESPN fallout and Manford acting like her got dumped but telling everyone he was the one who did the break up.
Just confirming you want a trade rumors site to not talk about trade rumors and instead focus on TV deals with ESPN?
Tv deals have just as much to do with trade rumors as players do. Teams that don’t have great deals trade their best players because they can’t afford them
Yes. Yes I do.
ad nauseam. Ahahahahahaha!
Breaking up is hard to do.
Especially with a complicated prenuptial agreement that the divorce lawyers have to deal with.
If we predict that Arenado gets a slight bump in WAR this year (he has been around 2.5 per year the last 2 years) to 3, and if each 1 WAR value is worth $8 million per, than he could be worth around 20-24 million per season. I know that seems wild, but if you look at what one unit of WAR was worth last year (about 7 million), than that’s his value. Does it make sense? Nah baby nah, but it is what it is. This year he is making about $32 million dollars, so by WAR value and prediction, he is not worth what he is to be paid. This will make it hard to trade him in the first place, even if the Cards eat some contract (while the Rockies are already nibbling up $5 million).
What is he worth in a trade?
What if he continues his regression and slips to 2 WAR? In this scenario he’s paid double what he’s worth with two more years of commitment/decline after that.
Ugly
At least the rest of his contract is front-loaded, especially since the Cardinals only owe him $10M for the final year of 2027.
StL was rumored to buy down 15mil of their 64mil owed. 7war, by your war value, is break even, over 3 seasons.
His AAV to acquire, is lowest at the deadline, if he can play himself out of town.
It’s very unlikely his WAR goes up as a 33 year old. Aging curves are very real.
Use 8mil per war, and expect 6.1war over three seasons. A very real expectation. No problem with the STL buy down amount.
Re-engage with Houston! Paredes can play 2B for them with Altuve now in LF! Makes a ton of sense & Nolan’s swing would work well with the Crawford Boxes.
“Re-engage with Houston”…It’s maybe worth a shot. The worst that can happen is Nolan will veto it again.
Maybe if Nolan knows that his only choices are staying thru a long team rebuild or going to Houston, he changes his mind.
It’s definitely worth a shot. There’s legit interest there & it’s the only team St. Louis actually came to an agreement with initially, so they have a framework to work from.
If you’re Houston, do you really want this player. He doesn’t sound all that motivated to me. He is just riding out the last few years of a mega deal before retiring and going to the HOF. Nothing wrong with that, but if I’m the Astros I have seen enough to be weary.
Nolan is very hungry to win. Houston isn’t worried at all about Arenado’s current abilities. Go read Katie Woo’s piece today in The Athletic & you’ll be rest assured about how the Astros feel about him.
I would think that Stl would need to absorb more if the contract than the deal initially agreed upon between the teams. Hou has moved on, filled positions, and is now in a much less desperate position of need. But still, I can’t rule it out because the Astros (especially Crane) can get focused on specific players he likes and will cross fiscal limits in order to acquire them. I don’t know if Arenado isn’t one of those guys, but it’s possible.
Great post, no doubt about it. The big question is if Arenado is somebody Crane would be willing to go over the CBT for. Katie Woo reported today that STL was initially going to pay down $15 mil which is about 25% of what he’s owed for the next 3 years. Woo also reported that it’s out of the question for STL to eat the majority of the money, but that doesn’t mean they can’t raise up their commitment from that 25 % mark. If STL raised up their commitment from $15 mil to about $26 mil which would be 40% of a commitment…I think it’s a lot likelier a deal could get done. Houston could then package Rafael Montero with a prospect or two to Miami, and still be under the CBT if his contract is moved. Miami may be looking to take on some bad contracts, so they don’t have the grievance filed against them by player’s union for lack of payroll. Houston could start by sending them Shay Whitcomb, who would likely be Miami’s everyday 2B. A package squared around Whitcomb, with a lower tier prospect like a James Hicks to go along with Montero would be worth considering for Miami. These 2 moves in conjunction with each other would work well for all 3 parties involved.
HOU assumes 3/38mil on Arenado w/no STL return? STL doesn’t appear willing to basically eat the front loaded first season of three.
Obviously, the more money STL sends…the better prospect the Cardinals will receive from Houston.
Obviously, the STL return was not called out by name. To simplify, stl will just play him, and pay him down themselves, for the same reasons HOU would like to acquire him.
I’m sure if they could move him before the season…they would do so. Playing Arenado just takes away reps from a young guy like Nolan Gorman that they’d like to get reps.
Proposals like yours is why they are waiting to sell. We like him for your reasons too.
I don’t necessarily understand what you’re exactly alluding to. The Cardinals are essentially trying to toe the line between competing & rebuilding is what I think you’re insinuating. Which is a good point because I mean this team did finish above .500 last year…but at the same time being in the middle with no clear direction is actually the worst place to be. It’s best to either pick a side & declare your plans. However, maybe St. Louis will wait to do that until the Trade deadline. Seems like that’s probably the move at this point since they haven’t moved Helsley, Fedde, etc.
Competing will be up to the players. Ownership hasn’t spent, and is waiting to sell, is the birdseye view. They have their own sell point. This isn’t one and done, it’s fluid.
Can Paredes play 2nd? Thought they would have moved Bregman there, but never saw anything mentioning Paredes being a good move there.
Yes, Paredes can play 2nd. That’s what Houston was planning for had they brought Bregman back. Paredes played a ton of 2nd in 2022 with the Rays, and also played some in 2021 w/DET & 2023 again with TB. He played exclusively 3B in 2024, but he came up as a SS & has played all around the IF in the Majors. He’d be fine at 2B & serviceable…his defensive metrics are better than Altuve’s at the very least. Paredes is an average to mediocre defender, but I think HOU would much prefer the Gold Glover Arenado at 3B since right handed hitters are selling out trying to launch balls into the Crawford Boxes…thus resulting in a ton of a hard contact to 3B in Houston.
Cardinals are playing a risky game here not trading any of their multiple trade candidates this offseason, and instead hoping teams are more desperate by the TDL. If Arenado, Helsley, Fedde, or others regress or get hurt, you suddenly have zero chance of trading them.
I would have thought with as pricey as SPs are, at least Fedde would be an easy enough target to move
Someone will come calling at the deadline, maybe someone desperate enough to over pay.
The increase in playoff odds is well worth that risk. Maybe one of those guys gets hurt or otherwise hurts his value, but maybe keeping these players help the Cardinals make a surprise trip to the playoffs. Fangraphs currently has their playoff odds at 23.1%, which isn’t a total long shot.
Opening day isn’t sold out for the first time in a long time. The script has been given to everybody in the organization to relay it to the fans their obligation to fill the stands to drag the youth forward. Ownership and management are delusional. The best schmucks in baseball have had enough.
“The best schmucks in baseball”…A very dark and negative take on one of the most supportive and knowledgeable fan bases in MLB. I’m guessing that youre a glass “half empty” guy.
The thing about baseball, there’s actually no guarantee that your team will win and so watching the game of baseball has always been optional.
Interestingly, in the expansion era the St.Louis Cardinals have never finished out of the top 10 in the NL attendance, whether they are good or really bad (lost 93 games in ’23 and still drew 3 million+ fans). I wouldn’t call the fans “schmucks” as “the Cardinals way” has never really seen them lean into big money free agency (sans a few scattered winters where they were “busy” by Cardinals standards). Buckle up because the Chaim Bloom era begins next winter, this nothing compared to what’s coming
Cardinals fans are schmucks because, Godforbid, one of the 3 premier organizations in baseball has a few down years.
The only schmuck Cardinal fans I see are the ones crying about a short break from running the NL Central. Get a grip!
Sincerely,
a Mariners fan
You do realize that Opening Day is still over a month away, don’t you?
With Goldy gone. Maybe he will step up and be a leader.
Arenado hard hit ratings have been dipping the last few years, which shows in his decrease in HRs
Arenado backed the Cardinals into a corner with a list of teams that either couldn’t afford him (Padres) or didn’t need him (the rest). If he had read the market he could have swapped out a few team’s that were never trading for him and added team’s like Houston, Detroit, or Kansas City that were all playoff teams a year ago
Great fit for Tigers. Detroit has a deep minor league group.Lookbgreat in the Olde English D
Great fit for Tigers. Detroit has a deep minor league group.Look great in the Olde English D
The Yankees need him so they can slide Chisholm to 2B. And for the guy that replied, no, Tigers don’t want him. Jung, Vierling, McKinstry and Ibanez can produce close to Arenado, I bet. Save that money for Skubal.
I feel like the Yankees are looking at the possibility that Arenado becomes another LeMahieu; big money deal that stops producing. The Yankees can still slide Chisholm to 2B and roll with LeMahieu at 3B for a bit and see if he gets anywhere close to back on track. The only the Yankees get Arenado at this point is if the Cardinals take Stroman back in the deal and they have already said “no” to that
So the Cubs trade for Tucker kept the Cardinals from being able to trade Arenado to Houston? HAHAHAHA!!! I LOVE IT!
He’ll probably be more valuable at the trade deadline and he’ll likely to willing to go somewhere that he wouldn’t even consider now.
This hit piece was the final straw. I’m done with this garbage and you losers
How is it a hit piece?
“Hit piece”. I don’t actually think baseball websites even do “hit pieces”, do they?
K, angry bird
Did you miss the fact that this article is just relaying a lot of what was reported by Katie Woo in The Athletic?
I don’t believe you.
Now this is what I’m talking about!
Troll your act is old
We could only be so lucky. But we’ll be looking for your next incarnation.
At least Arenado took the high road and offered to waive his no trade contract …. “IF”…..
“If John Mozeliak would trade him to a contender”. Arenado also went as far as naming teams he would be willing to by-pass his no trade clause.
Because John Mozeliak couldn’t initiate a trade between any of the clubs Arenado had listed —- Mozeliak portrayed Arenado as the uncooperative villain through the press!!!
Arenado Was Not the Villain!! He gave Mozeliak an out.
Two other Cardinals have no-trade clauses in their contracts. (Those players being Gray and Contreras).
They did not chose to cooperate with Mozeliak’s request to drop their No-trade clause to be traded.
They chose not to cooperate at all —- and nothing is said against them at all by Mozeliak.
Mozeliak was the person who “could not negotiate a deal”, with any of Arenado’s designated teams.
Several of those teams acknowledged Mozeliak would not negotiate… nor work with them, —— although they were interested, —— to get any type of a deal done.
The cardinals situation here is nearly the opposite of what they had with Pujols as far as wearing their hat into the HOF. I think if Arenado can put in a couple more 3 WAR seasons he would get the call from the hall. It makes a ton of sense for him to go in with a Rockies hat on if he got the call at this point even if his best individual season results were in STL. If STL holds on to him for the remainder of the contract though that could change. The guy is still really good and has said in interviews he does not plan on playing past the time he really starts to decline so it is possible he could retire a Cardinal. Just something to think about if you’re selling jerseys. For this alone I think it was an error to let Goldy walk as well. I mean he was had on the cheap and is still solid at 1st base and won an MVP in their uniform. I get it if they were going to actually be able to unload some of their other high salary players with NTC and actually rebuild, but for this to go this way and not retain Goldy just seems like bad business.
Goldy was terrible last year…just embarrassing at the plate. He’s a likable guy but cards have a logjam at first. Absolutely no reason to keep him.
Goldy is still playing a Gold Glove caliber defense.
Plus —— Goldschmidt’s ‘24 stats and Arenado’s stats were tremendously better than Nolan “strikeout” Gorman of whom John Mozeliak is wanting to replace Arenado with.
Plus — Mozeliak has replaced Goldschmidt with a catcher who can’t use his glove at first base when they have Burleson who can both hit and is good with his glove around the first base bag!!!
How Crazy are the Cardinals owners going to let Mozeliak go without replacing him right now????
It’s definitely a make or break year for Gorman. He needs to get his strikeouts down.
I assume they’ll give Baker some time at first as well and have Contreras DH a decent amount too.
I love Goldy…he’s a good guy, but it was time for the cards to move on from him.
Seems like the media very much wants what the cards are doing to be something very different than it is. They said they wanted to get younger and they’re using this season to see what they have in their young guys. They think they can make immediate improvements with folks like Gorman and Walker while also building their player development. They let Goldy walk which is a net gain for the team. They were going to dump Arenado if it meant they could save money, but they were never going to just give him away for the sake of giving him away. The cards are probably a better team than they were last year and are just giving some young pitchers a chance now. Losing Goldy, Lynn, and Gibson is not a blow to this team in any way. Plus the divisions sucks. This team could easily content for the playoffs in this division, so no need to dump the players everyone else wants them to trade. Of course, they they might not be good this year, but it’s not a throwaway year.
“The cards are probably a better team than they were last year ”
“Losing Goldy, Lynn, and Gibson is not a blow to this team in any way.”
I disagree. Lynn and Gibson (along with Gray, Pallante and Mikolas) were part of a formula whereby the starter went 6 innings in most cases and the lights out triumvirate of Romero, Kittredge and Helsley nailed down the win if they had a lead. Replacing Lynn (with Fedde) may work, but Gibson’s innings will be missed. Moreover, I wouldn’t dismiss Goldy’s glove at 1B; Contreras has virtually zero experience over there and our infield defense is likely to suffer as a result. Add in the absence of Kittredge and this team is NOT better than last year.
I like a top 3 of Gray, Pallante, and Fedde. Pallante looked like an ace the second half of the year last year. We’re stuck with Mikolas. We’re stuck with Matz. They’re saying they’re giving Libertore another shot at starting even though he has failed at every turn, but is a decent reliever. We have some young guys coming up that deserve a shot…McGreevy at the top of the list. Maybe Tink. I’m holding out hope they’ll bring Gibson back since his price is probably going down as he waits for offers this late. He’s supposedly a great clubhouse guy.
I’d have to doublecheck, but I don’t recall Lance Lynn being the innings eater we hoped he would be…at least not in a good way. Plus, he’s old and that body is catching up to him.
Sonny Gray and Arrenado for Devers.
Gray refuses to waive his NTC for anyone and basically said, “don’t even ask”. That’s why you haven’t heard any rumors about him all winter. Same thing with Contreras.
Not to mention the fact that trade does little for Boston. If they wanted to trade Devers it would be to make sure 3B was open for Bregman. Trading for another right handed hitting 3B would make zero sense.
What a brain dead idea.
@Popgun- They’re not trading with the Mavericks. They’re the only team who would accept that deal.
Mozeliak gave a master class in how not to negotiate in this deal.
Bravo Sir!
You will be a textbook example of how Not to work a deal for decades to come in graduate level Sports Management classes.
What did he do wrong? Might as well keep Arenado if you can’t get much for him from the three teams left. Too many people expect him to just give Arenado away.
If they’d take on the salary that’s exactly what they’d do. Gladly.
But that’s the point…no one wants to do that. They want us to pay a lot for Arenado to play for them, which isn’t worth it.
Why not stay and give it a go. The division is wide open with brewers cheapness and the cubs incompetent front office you never know
Ooof low blow Reds & Pirates aren’t even worth mentioning.
Finish with a record of .500 once in awhile and maybe the reds and pirates will be mentioned
I think it can be assumed, none of the “other teams” told agent his they would offer money to waive the ntc.
I am just guessing but Arenado will be more than willing to agree to a trade at the deadline to teams that are in contention after the Cardinals are out of it. for the following reasons… He has had a great career,10 gold gloves, 6 Platinum gloves, 5 Silver Slugger,8 All Star games but has had the misfortune of playing in only 8 postseason games with a .152 BA. in his 12 year career. He has already made over 235 million dollars with another 74 million due…32 this year, 27 in 2026 and 15 in 2027 so he and his family are set for life but he wants another shot at the playoffs and hopefully a World Series. When it becomes obvious that the Cardinals aren’t going to be the team then he will waive his NTC for the opportunity.
I hope he gets the chance.
Refreshing to see MoTie get worked over like that.
I kind of feel like the Cardinals deserved what they get with Arrenado. The Rockies were in the same situation where they couldn’t afford to extend him and had to trade him before he left via free agency. The Cardinals were happy to scoop him up and extend him, but now they are crying that they are too poor to keep him and want his big contract moved elsewhere. Kind of serves them right for taking him in the first place. They can’t cry that he is too expensive now since they weren’t crying that when they traded for him. Eat the rest of the contract and deal with his poor production.
I believe he signed the extension while he was WITH Colorado, but was unhappy when the Rockies made no effort to contend (an ongoing issue).
Cards are retooling, and asked the veterans if they wanted to stay during the retooling; Arenado said he’d be happy to go to a contender, if it met his criteria.
No one’s really crying here. Arenado COULD have gone elsewhere if he really wanted to, and the Cardinals are a better team with him than without.
They can afford him but they are being cheap and have not gotten good results from higher payrolls in the past couple of years. They are choosing to go with more young players. They have plenty of money as the article said, always in the top 10 of attendance, even in down years.
They never spent much of the massive haul they made in 2022 in Pujols and Yadi’s final year which ended with a big choke in the playoffs.
Nothing you wrote is correct. The Rockies had already extended Arenado. The Cardinals tacked on 1 reasonably priced year so he would approve the trade. Both teams can afford him. Neither team is or was crying. Both teams had a change of direction due to things not turning out as expected.
Don’t forget the part where the Rox signed Kris Bryant to replace him!
A lot of people seem to get worked up over this. To me, it’s a nonstory (though I don’t blame MLBTR for covering it).
The Cardinals are a better team WITH Arenado than they would be without him, and it doesn’t take much effort to look around MLB and you’ll see several so-called contenders with much worse at the position (Yankees, Royals, Tigers, etc.). The only one hurt by all this is Nolan Gorman, who won’t get the amount of playing time he would have to prove once and for all whether he’s a major leaguer or not.
The REAL issue facing the Cardinals is that they haven’t signed a setup man and their bullpen… a strength in 2024… looks to be much worse. Kittredge was a rock star for them, and the fact that they haven’t made ANY move to replace him is puzzling at best, irresponsible at worst. They better hope someone falls cheap (Robertson?) into their lap or it’s going to be an issue.
The last signing was Middleton, one year ago. Waiting to sell.
“The Tigers were involved in the Bregman market, making him a six-figure offer”
Tigers were ready to break the bank

I’m glad he turned it down.
The Cards don’t need to trade Arenado, they need to replace their front office and development staff. Feel sorry for the fan base they deserve better.
Originally, it was reported that the Angels and not the Astros were on Nolan Arenado’s acceptable trade list.
It’s reallly easy. Stl and mo signed the no trade so it’s on them. It’s their fault period. They made their bed now live with it. Love Stl as a team and will always root for them but when they (team and management cry poor me I can’t move a player who’s contract you negotiated then screw you managemt. You made the bed now lay in it and accent responsibility. The rest of the world has to operate that way you should too.
