The Cubs are bringing one of the game’s most experienced veteran hitters into the fold, announcing Thursday that they’ve signed Justin Turner to a one-year contract. Outfielder Alexander Canario has been designated for assignment (as was reported earlier today). Turner, a VaynerSports client, is reportedly guaranteed $6MM with incentives also available. The guarantee breaks down as a $4MM salary and $2MM buyout on a $10MM mutual option for 2026. As for the incentives, Turner would get $125K for getting to 350, 375, 400, 425, 450 and 475 plate appearances. He’d get $250K for getting to 500, 525 and 550 plate appearances. There’s also $250K for 120 and 150 days on the active roster, as well as a $500K bonus every time he’s traded.
Despite his age, the now-40-year-old Turner remained a productive bat for the Blue Jays and Mariners in 2024. He hit 24 doubles and 11 home runs while continuing to make the most of his plate discipline and contact skills en route to a .737 OPS and 117 wRC+. The righty batter was particularly productive for Seattle in September, slashing .295/.396/.449 with a 143 wRC+. In other words, there is little reason to doubt that he can still be a valuable contributor to a team with postseason aspirations.
Turner has qualified for the batting title in each of the past four seasons, but he will take on more of a part-time role with the Cubs. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers notes that Turner is expected to fill a backup role at first and third base. Chicago reportedly considered many options for such a job but ultimately settled on Turner after missing out on star third baseman Alex Bregman (per Rogers). The Cubs were a finalist to sign Bregman before he joined the Red Sox instead. The team also reportedly considered trading for Nolan Arenado, although it comes as no surprise that the Cardinals weren’t interested in trading Arenado to a division rival (per The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney).
Primarily a third baseman in his younger days, Turner has only played a handful of games at the hot corner in each of the past two seasons. Instead, he has transitioned to a first base/DH role. Both of those jobs are already spoken for in Chicago, with promising sophomore Michael Busch at first base and Seiya Suzuki, arguably the team’s second-best hitter after Kyle Tucker, penciled in at DH. Still, the Cubs plan to use Turner primarily at those two spots, per Mooney; Turner won’t be lining up at third base with any regularity.
Turner could potentially platoon with Busch at first if the lefty batter struggles against same-handed pitching. On top of that, Turner will offer the club insurance in the case of an injury to Busch, Suzuki, or a corner outfielder; if Tucker or Ian Happ gets hurt, Suzuki could play the outfield with Turner taking over as the primary DH. Even if everyone is healthy, the Cubs could give Happ or Tucker the occasional breather and plug Turner in at designated hitter on such days.
With regard to third base, top prospect Matt Shaw seems to be the most likely choice to win the job out of camp, but the 23-year-old has yet to play a game at the big league level. Thus, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer made it clear that Shaw is not yet guaranteed the starting job. However, the Cubs don’t exactly have a ton of other options. Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan both have MLB experience at third, but neither is a starting-caliber player at the position. Meanwhile, Rule 5 pick Gage Workman is himself an unknown quantity; he has not played a game above Double-A. Turner isn’t an everyday solution, but he’ll at least improve the team’s depth at third while providing a quality bat to deepen the team’s offense.
Patrick Mooney of The Athletic was first to report that the Cubs and Turner were finalizing a one-year, $6MM deal. Jon Heyman of The New York Post confirmed there was an agreement in place and reported the performance bonuses, as well as the full breakdown.
That’s “Just”in time as Shaw’s having health issues.
I hope he makes me eat my words, but I don’t see how this helps the Cubs at all. They’re about 15 years late on this guy.
ah yes, 2010 Justin Turner and his -37 OPS would do wonders
Mets & Orioles said the same thing until the Dodgers picked him up.
pretty sure Justin Turner doesn’t have 8 years of high level baseball left at this point
He trailed off a bit offensively last year. Wonder how much Turner has left? His strikeout numbers and walk numbers were the same, indicating he’s still seeing the ball but power and average dipped a little bit from his norms
He’s more of a 1B/DH at this point. I don’t know how well he’s going to do if they put him at 3B.
That’s what I’m feeling as well, but this move has to be to cover for Shaw
The nerd stats say that Busch might struggle this year. So that might be the reason.
I agree, plus there is zero backup at 1B if Busch gets hurt. They traded away Mervis and have no one in upper minors who could realistically step in unless Canario shows he can do it, or they have Caisse taking grounders over there this Spring.
Red Sox had him play 2B for a couple of minutes in 2023. Ideally he shouldn’t be playing a whole lot of defense but for a game or two or three, he can stand there at a position. As long as he can at least hit LHPs well enough there will be a role for him somewhere.
He’s strictly a backup. Read the article.
After giving away Bellinger’s bat for salary relief to redeploy in other areas, it’s nice to see we’re filling those needs with a deteriorating 1b/3b man on the wrong side of 40. Well done.
Old, yes! However, he can still swing the bat a little bit and is cheap! Defensively I don’t think he can cut it at 3b most of time but using him there in a pinch isn’t too bad. He’s also insurance in case busch takes a step back this season.
Hey Jesse.
I don’t disagree with the pickup at this point. I think it’ll serve the Cubs backup needs well enough.
The comment was more that we rid ourselves of Belly under the guise that his salary relief will be used elsewhere on defense and will bring a big bat back. Turner isn’t the answer for that (though, again, he does serve a purpose with the situation we’re in presently)
Personally, I’d rather the owner overpay Belly to play part-time 1b, OF, and DH. Berti is backup at 3B, and thus no need to pay a 40 year old to cover those holes.
It’s a cash savings for Ricketts… not much else
I thought the point of shedding Bellinger salary was to cover Tucker’s and then a little over that to use in other areas.
Not a horrible p/u and I agree I’d rather see Berti at 3B. Would have loved to pick up Rizzo for backup at 1B and leadership but he hasn’t been the same since the last couple injuries.
If losing Bellinger was only for using it to cover Tucker (and small pickups elsewhere), we got hosed on the Tucker trade.
The cost of picking up one year of Tucker was substantial just in giving up Cam Smith. Throw on Paredes and Wesneski, and we gave up a lot. Losing Bellinger’s bat and defensive versatility on top would be a slaughter.
So, no, I think the financial flexibility in losing Bellinger was intended to be used in picking up a FA 1 or 2 tor arm (Flaherty) or bat (Bregman) or a trade (Cease).
Yes, had we kept Bellinger, rotating players in and out on defense would’ve needed some creative moves, but just losing his bat for nothing is frustrating
@cubsin25
Ok Gotcha, I misunderstood the comment as being against signing turner for 6 million when it was more being critical of the Rockets. Have a good afternoon!
Bellinger was a 3 year deal . So had one year left after this year . So this year Tucker vs Bellinger . Tucker 4.7 war last year to Bellinger 2.2. Bellinger could opt out after this year anyway . No big loss for one year at most .
Glad you consider Tucker nothing.
Heh?
This is a prime example of someone reading one line in a post and failing to contextualize it with the rest of the conversation.
Comprehension is tough for some people, I know, but I never said that or even inferred it.
Bellinger was not a trade piece in the Tucker trade. They were distinct trades, so saying “we got nothing for Bellinger” in no way infers that “Tucker is nothing”. Jeez…
Really frustrating the way Jed is spending like it’s burning a hole in his pocket. Save it for someone who can actually move the needle.
No offense Robert – – but I’ll ‘rinse and repeat: Hoyer doesn’t make up the BUDGET!!! Rickets does.
I’m getting Deja Vu.. Like I’ve seen this before. Oh yeah I have. Mancini. Cue rim shot. Bah dah bump.
Dogbone,
This isn’t a budget issue. It’s how Jed is spending it. Boyd, Kelly, Rea, Berti, Theilbar, Turner, Flexen, etc. Taking on Pressly’s contract. That’s @ $50M in 2025 salary.
Cheap Tom should have paid him $12M just to prove he’s not cheap as he still has money in his budget
Why not Rizzo?
Because Rizzo is left handed and doesn’t play third base.
no rules about a lefty playing third. lol
And Rizzo has played third (and second) in a game, too. So much versatility!
Playing extremely in on a bunt, so much so that the official scorekeeper is forced to reclassify him as playing second base, doesn’t count lol
Because they have Busch. They need someone to fill in at third in case this “minor” injury to Shaw is more, and a backup for first. Rizzo does one of those two things, Turner does both. Plus I’m pretty sure after the concussions he’s had, Rizzo is done.
I think if Shaw ends up missing significant time, they will need to make another move. They could use Berti but will likely need someone for 2B until Nico is ready.
I shudder to think our opening day lineup could include Brujan at 2B and Berti at 3B, or vice versa.
What a waste of Tucker’s likely only season in Chicago.
Meh bullpen. Meh rotation. Meh lineup.
I wasnt big on the idea of signing Bregman but missing out on him and Tanner Scott, never trading for a big RH SP like Castillo or Cease, all these failed attempts will likely prevent the Cubs from doing anything significant this season. So again, a waste of Paredes, Belli, Cam, Bigge, and Morel. Not to mention what Jed gave up to acquire Candelario.
Pressly and Turner… yeesh.
You mean the .195 hitting Morel ( his average over the last 3 years).
Don’t forget the Michael Busch trade.
Baseball Prospectus ranks Zyhir Hope as the #8 prospect among their top 101 in MLB; Jackson Ferris as #52. That was the cost for Michael Busch. Is Busch worth the #8 prospect in all of baseball…PLUS the #52?
And Ty Johnson was included in the Bigge/Morel trade; he now ranks as the #94 prospect in MLB. And i wouldn’t sleep on Jeremiah Estrada either (released, key member of Padres bullpen last year).
Good comment Dev. Except Hope isn’t 8th overall, I believe he’s 8th in the Dodgers organization.
Rizzo is broken and terrible.
Nice upgrade to have on the bench and a backup 1b emergency 3b option.
No mention of how awful he is because this site is biased towards the Cubs….unreal
Maybe wait till the post isn’t just the intro paragraph with “more to come” before making such silly leaps?
There are 29 other teams in baseball and I feel like its only ever Card fans that see things this way… it’s like a coping mechanism for some when they’re not looking too great.
padre—–look at his screen name…..no sense in him waiting to get details….
I don’t need to wait. I’ve been here since the beginning, dipstick. They’ve been bias since day one. Look it up
We see what we want, don’t we? Even when it’s invisible
#DelusionalCardsFan
I looked it up and it says…
“Youjustmadethatup is making all this up”
Youjustmadethatup and God were here from the beginning.
He prefers the screen name Genesis 1:1 but didn’t want to make it too obvious how over inflated his ego is.
Just did a quick scroll—exactly two of the last 70 posts are Cub related. With 30 teams in baseball—I can almost see the slant.
Yes, proof of bias! It should have been 2-1/3 posts. The Cubs got ripped off by a third of a post! There’s your proof! Great sleuthing, Mike!
Well then you should go to the MLB network website because all they talk about is the dodgers and the cesspool franchise in east missouri. You’ll love it there.
lol even in a down year the guy posted a 114OPS. He is gonna be a veteran bench player w extensive postseason experience and someone who can spell Busch at first vs tough lefties w an occasional start at 3rd. But sure the article should just say he is awful cause you say so. The Cubs bias rant about this site is old. Find a new shtick.
I like your positive take, but Jed has really botched this offseason.
When you go out and trade for Tucker, you have to have a better plan than this. He found a taker for Bellinger’s salary- no easy feat, but has done nothing significant w that money.
Rea, Flexen, Pressly and Turner… here’s to 2nd place or maybe an early postseason exit if Shaw, PCA, and Brown/Horton step up in meaningful ways.
@Youjustmadethatup: Is this the new screen name for BITA? Accuses MLBTR of being biased for the Cubs and calls someone a dipstick. Very BITA like. Did the angriest little troll get himself banned again and have to change his screen name? Also often accuses others of having “made that up” when he’s presented w/facts that counter his garbage rants. Has to be BITA.
It’s a spoof.
They play him too much at 3B and he’ll start being called Turnstile. His 3B days are behind him
That’s funny Ezpkns34. Maybe the groundskeeper can help. When the cubbies had an aging left side of Bowa and Cey they purportedly let the grass grow longer to slow down the grounders. Turner might need such help at this stage in his career.
I would agree for the most part on him being able to capably man 3B. Definitely a good back up for Busch at 1B. He can still hit. But mostly he adds some potential thump on a bench that has very little.
Turnstile. Or Venture.
I got that ^
I would say the Cubs aren’t finished yet !
Jed needs to find a front of the rotation arm and another impact arm for the pen. Rea, Pressly and Brasier aren’t going to get the job done.
When they release figures we’ll know if it was a huge overpay or just an overpay for an emergency backup at the corners.
I wish Turner well this year and hope I’m wrong, but this is a classic Hoyer understated response to a glaring hole sitting on money that should be deployed elsewhere.
So Nicky Lopez will be the only left hand hitting bench player? Crazy.
Same thing can be said about the lack of left handed options in the bullpen.
Very true. Theilbar was yet another head-scratcher. Pressly, Rea, Flexen, Brasier.
Maybe Pressly has something left but these guys are all AAA depth on a good team.
Glad you have come to the conclusion that the Cubs are not a good team. Since you have decided, stop whining. You’ve already told us that you don’t expect them to win. How can you be disappointed?
Good. Busch and Shaw are both unproven.
As a Brewers fan, I love these desperation moves that Cubs are making.
What a weird thing to say.
You’re paying attention to the backup moves the Cubs are making because the only movement on your team’s end is shipping talent out?
This is a better move than anything the Brewers have done this offseason
Most be depressing to be a Brewers fan and constantly watch all of your talent leave and have success elsewhere. How is Rhys Hoskins working out for you?
How is clown car Counsell working out for you?
mad1?….more like b\/tt hurt1. How’s the anger working out for you?
Yeah, I wish Jed was taking after the Brewers and trading away our best pitchers while watching our best hitter walk in FA and not replacing him.
Just bc Jed has botched the offseason after acquiring Tucker doesnt mean the Brewers are doing anything better. Theyre good at being competitive in a small market, but theyre hardly having a good offseason.
OK–seeing 1yr/$6M. Smells a little like Hosmer/Mancini…but maybe the third time is the charm!!
Lower expectations and needs with Busch locked in.
I was thinking/hoping it’d be less than $5M, but his leadership in the clubhouse may make that worthwhile.
I saw that figure from Jesse Rogers article about 9:30 am Chicago time.
Who needs another big bat and a tor pitcher?? We’re going to win with clubhouse leadership and rain delay speeches!! lol
Kidding aside, wish all the best for Turner. Maybe he’ll “Turn” back the clock for one good backup year
It’s in Hoyers contract he has to blow 15-20 million every year on spots they should be filling with prospects.
Padres are paying Hosmer $13M in 2025 to sit home, Turner is getting less than half that to suit up for the Cubs. Seems like the Cubs have the better deal.
Neither Hosmer or Mancini were any good by the time they ended up in Chicago. Turner is still a productive hitter
Really dislike the Cubs (read Ricketts), but love the player. It’s quite a dilemma.
Buckle up Cubs nation gonna be a fun summer and October. Love Wrigley North in Wi.
If they believe turner can still adequately fill 3rd as backup to Shaw, they’re mistaken? Now, they still need solid backup for Pete crow in center.
Saw an article yesterday saying an Alcantara call up is the backup CF option.
Yes, wasting away a young promising looking player on the bench when Michael Taylor still available, another hoyer mistake
Taylor is already signed
You appear to be a Cubs fan by mistake
Since ‘53 and a season ticket holder sine ‘83 but I will criticize ownership without hesitation when necessary.
Alcantara can definitely play center. Caissie can play both corners and 1st. Canario needs abs and can play all over the outfield. Chris flexen on a minor league deal could have filled Colin Rea spots. Is Theilbar better than Zastzryzny? Hoyer spends money to spend money. Take all that wasted money and throw it at Bregman and this lineup was stacked. At least get a tucker extension done. They still don’t have a real third baseman and they traded two. Hopefully Shaw works out.
We’re gonna lose Tucker to FA next year (or a midseason trade if we get off to a slow start this Spring). Enjoy him while he’s here… it’s inevitable.
The biggest frustration about losing out on Bregman, as it turns out, is Ricketts, not Hoyer. Bregman’s $40M salary is half deferred, and Ricketts refuses to play in the deferred high salary game that all the big FA are attracted to the past couple years. An AAV of 31M for Bregman’s services for 3 years doesn’t seem too high of a hurdle… that and we can’t recreate Fenway’s RH hitter friendly environment… at least Hoyer put a solid offer out there and at the very least served to inflate the bargaining…
Turner is the perfect backup
Great signing-Lets win this thing
$6m for one year of the 40 year old as a backup? Too much! And they couldn’t pay Bregmann? Both hoyer and ricketts way off base!
Moncada absolutely sucked last year and still got 5MM. This guy isn’t an every day player anymore but he is still a professional hitter. Not sure what you expected him to sign for when the Grichuks and Phams of the word are all getting around 5MM.
Wait, $6mm is too expensive for an above average hitter but in the same breath you wonder why the Cubs didn’t want to beat $40mm/yr on Bregman?
Looks like Detroit will be getting Workman back eventually
feels like an unnecessary pickup
I agree. Let’s play Busch 162 games at 1B, averaging 9+ innings per game on defense. He can follow in Swanson’s footsteps. No rest!
Dr. Zaius lives on!
At $6M this is a good deal. Turner will be better than Wisdom, even at 40. He’s going to be insurance for a few things: Busch sophomore slumping, Shaw struggling out of the gate and needing to be PH for late in close games, and DH if there are injuries to Suzuki, Tucker, and Happ (Suzuki to the OF). The Cubs bench was awful last year, now it’s Tucker, Berti, Kelly, and Canario with Alcantara and Triantos at AAA in case of injuries.
Brick, you are a voice of reason.
Keep all sharp objects away from BrucieW.
That hurts!
The Mariners are going to regret not matching that offer.
Unless they have another move in mind, which I doubt, they will regret not signing Turner. The Mariners still need a DH and they need a Leader like Turner in the clubhouse. Like everything else the Mariners have done, or have not done this off season, this makes no sense to me. $6 million for one year. Just too much?
As a Cub fan, I have family and friends who want to murder the Ricketts family and Jed Hoyer for not doing enough. I keep on reminding them that the Cubs still have less dysfunctional ownership than the Mariners and Blue Jays.
And orioles. Them and Seattle are close but they absolutely refuse to get better
Are the Cubs less dysfunctional, or do they just have higher revenue?
I don’t think Turner wanted to go back to Seattle. It’s the toughest ballpark to hit in.
I disagree. He spoke about how much he enjoyed his time in Seattle. He just wanted a home.
Seattle is a nice place to visit from June through September.
SEA doesn’t care as long as they make a nice, risk averse profit.
Thats what pisses me off….if they want to treat a baseball team simply like an investment…..there are lots of other things to invest in. they could have chose anything.
SEA fans only have one team to chose from. Stanton and company could have invested in virtually anything if profit was the only motivation.
If you want a to run a team just like an ordinary business…..why not just buy an ordinary business? No reason to crush the souls of an entire fanbase.
Trying to win should be a requisite for ownership. There’s a reason they get special anititrust laws and public built stadiums. Sports teams are more than just an ordinary business.
MLB is a fully protected racket & operates outside of our laws regarding monopolistic practices.
It’s not a competitive group of businesses. It’s more like a self governed socialist scheme that is only concerned with the interests of the “owners” of said corporation. The consumers have no say over anything.
Eh, I’m not losing sleep over the Mariners letting a 40 y/o backup 1B go. Sure he can still hit the ball sometimes and the plate discipline is still decent but his power has declined and he is no longer a viable defensive option aside from 1B. Solano’s just about as good at this point, can still cover 3B part time, costs about 60% as much, and he’s 3 years younger.
I get that, I just feel that one
More small piece could help and I like Turners leadership.
I’m not losing sleep about not signing Turner. At 40, he should not be a target as starter on a contending team. He’s kind of a cheap hole plugger you sign as last resort who you hope has one more year left as an averagish player at a cheap price. I’m just laughing that they went for the market BELOW Turner….not above.
They aren’t just looking in the scrap heap, they are looking at the bottom of the heap.
I mean, the Mariners had several positions to fill this winter and an ownership that only gave them loose change to spend. They’re rolling with utility players at 2B and hoping one of their top prospects takes it over by midseason. Not a great strategy for a team that’s allegedly a contender. I don’t like that they completely went cheap at 3B, that was the clearest spot to upgrade, and getting someone actually good would have been a much bigger swing in projected wins. However, at 1B/DH with Raley already penciled in as the longside platoon 1B, Haniger/Garver maybe getting DH time at least initially, I’m okay with going a little cheaper there to get Solano who’s been a reliably pretty good hitter that has some defensive versatility left in him.
Cubs like ex-dodgers. He is 40 well over that hill will do ok as a fill in player but that is all – maybe he will show up in clutch situations..
No maybe about it. Always a clutch player.
Problem would have been at 3rd of hoyer had not packaged both our young 3rd basemen for 1 year of tucker opting instead for one 3rd basemen and an alcantara or caisse who are ready but are blocked.
Barf.
Such a predictably lame move by this franchise coupled with such predictably lame positive reactions by its too easily satisfied fan base.
The guy can flat out hit, even at his age, and can still field both positions if not at an elite level. Good sign, IMO.
Excellent signing. I can’t say enough good things about Turner. His 1 year with the Redsox was great. A total professional, gamer, clutch and great clubhouse guy! Good luck to him.
Good move. Cubs IF corners are young and having a plus bat to back up is far better than tossing another wad on the wall and hoping it sticks
Haven’all you die hard cub fans enjoyed reading the article from buster olney on bregmann and the cubs?
He’s not the only one, either. Ken Rosenthal went scorched earth on Ricketts a couple of times over the winter. Even Sahadev Sharma ripped them a new one. I applaud the writers calling Ricketts out. Hopefully more voices will join the chorus, but the only thing that will make a difference is when/if fans stop showing up at Wrigley.
He did offer 30/year. He is not worth 40M per. It was a over pay by Boston.
I feel good about Shaw on opening day. Having Turner and Berti gives solid depth to the IF.
That said I would love a replacement to Tauchman as a back up OF that can play CF. And a lefty in the pen.
Andrew Chafin
Mark Canha.
Dump Workman, Canario and Merryweather.
Should put payroll in the 225-230M range and provide some vet stability
I saw Bregman as a overpay. Turner is insurance to Shaw and Busch. They are looking to reset next year with Jed etc and the expiring deals on the out. Better to get short term to get the next 5 years maturing.
Huge Turner fan/ Dodger fan here. Never understood the Dodgers not picking up his final year. It wasn’t for his play. Always speculated that he said something as the player rep that irked management or maybe Dave Roberts. He was loved in LA and we JT fans miss him. I still have a #10 jersey in my closet.
That’s why Seattle didn’t sign him, 5.9M above their budget. Thanks Stanton!
At least you paid for his ballpark.
I like it. Plenty of AB’s to go around if they rotate Suzuki into the OF mix as well as Turner in the Infield
I believe that Turner will get some PH late games with a platoon at 1B. He is 40 so age is a real issue. With the Cubs he will be used sparingly.
I don’t even see him as the back up 3B. Berti has that edge right now. They do need a CF. I don’t see Happ moving off LF to give PCA a day off. Also Canario is not a CF. Alcantara you want to get everyday playing time vs minimal.
Canha is ideal as he can play all 3 OF plus help in the IF.
Berti has played 37 games in CF so i would expect him to get some reps there
Not a bad idea
Baseball Prospectus Overview of Justin Turner:
“Has the end finally run out? Could hard numbers would suggest that his days as a comfortably above average hitter have indeed run out…..declining quality of contact and worrisome peripherals…now ranks as one of the worst in the game in putting the barrel on the ball. His bat speed is practically glacial. Pitchers routinely carved him up in the heart of the strike zone; his only saving grace at the plate is his eye, resulting in the kind of OBP-heavy OPS that looks more valuable than it actually is. Never a plus with the glove or his legs and now 40 years old, Turner is staring down obsolescence.”
Just think… if the GM FOR LIFE hadn’t saddled the club with that anvil of a contract with LeMahieu, Turner would have been an ideal short term solution for the Yankees at 3rd base.
But, alas…
Accept no substitutes.
“This puts them over the top….”
Every February through the end of March, the cubs are World Series champs.
Yawn…..
Well there was that one time almost 8.5 years ago.
Far from it. Line up is meh after Tucker. Got a battle for a rotation spot.
I feel better about the Cubs but they are not a team that can push over the Dodgers.
I love this signing by the Cubs. He fits and number of potential needs and at the very least, will be an imposing bat on the bench late in games. The dude has the clutch gene and will probably have a number of big late inning hits this year. Plus, he is allegedly a great clubhouse guy. Win-win as far as I’m concerned. And he costs $112-114 million less than Bregman. Give that money and more to Tucker in the offseason. The Cubs are looking good heading into the spring. One more ace level pitcher this year would set them up well for the playoffs too. They already have a two headed monster in Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele. Throw in a righty like Luis Castillo, Dylan Cease, Michael King or Alcantra and we will be a very tough out come October. Love the upgrades in the pen too. Pressley and Brasier are gonna be huge and hopefully Porter Hodge continues his upward trajectory. Actually excited to see what this team can do.
This is one of a few moves i like jed has made this offseason..while his prime is past him he still can add a solid off the bench bat..easily the best bench bat they have..and much needed..the bench bats up to his signing were poor to say the least..while his de will be very limited at this point in his career..he still is a somewhat capable back up with a positive bench bat
He reminds me of Maurice from the Planet of the Apes reboot movies.
A player like Turner needs ab’s. The less ab’s he gets I don’t believe it will work well for him if he’s just getting a few ab’s here or there, or a ph here or there, but let’s see.
He leads active players in pinch hits (50), so he obviously can hit without every day at bats.
@Baseball Purist
I am not sure where you’re getting those stats from.
From 2020 to 2024 to give a more recent view of his pinch hitting activity
2020 3ab 1 hit
2021 5 ab 1 hit
2022 5 ab 1 hit
2023 2 ab 0 hit
2024 5 ab 1 hit
.182 as a pinch hitter over those 22 appearances.
Career wise according to what I sourced.
Career Pinch-Hit Batting Average: .241 (47 hits / 195 AB).
Early career (2009-2013) featured more pinch-hit opportunities due to Turner’s utility role. His peak PH performance came in 2011 (.400).
After joining the Dodgers in 2014, he became a regular starter, reducing pinch-hit appearances significantly.
Year 2011, he had 10 PH ab’s 4/10
2012 Mets 15 3/15
2013 Mets 20 5/20
2014 Dodgers 10 3/10
2015 Dodgers 8 2/8
2018 Dodgers 10 3/10
————————-
.274
Since 2018 he hasn’t had any double figure ph ab opportunities.
Career Pinch-Hit Batting Average: .241 (47 hits / 195 AB).
It’s still pretty good, but it doesn’t take into account his recent lack of ph opportunities. There seems to be some discrepancy in your 50 v the 47/195 that I found.
Anyway, he’s a good player, but as far as I am concerned when you’re getting older in this sport you need more ab’s, but we’ll see.
I like Turner, so I hope he does well, just not against the Braves.
Edit:
2020 3ab 1 hit
2021 5 ab 1 hit
2022 5 ab 1 hit
2023 2 ab 0 hit

He’s a really good dude. Wish he never left LA. But times change.
Just daw that Justin Turner is already at Cubs camp. Wonder if he besides in Phoenix in the off season. That’s the quickest I’ve seen a player reports after signing with a team.
Oh it’s gonna be fun watching the Cubbies struggle this year
You must know something that all of the experts don’t know.
Dropped turner off in the nursing home van?
Odd signing. With Busch entrenched at 1b and Suzuki already setup to be the DH. Is this a signal they’re looking to trade Suzuki so he can play outfield somewhere else? Turner’s defense at 3b has been horrendous the last couple years. Not sure if he can bounce back even with camp and spring training reps at 3b.
Depth. He will get his at bats. He cam play 1b, 3b, and both corner OF positions although that certainly isn’t an ideal situation. 3b is an uncertainty with Shaw. He will get at bats verses tough lefties at 1b. If either corner OF gets injured he will slide into DH role with Suzuki going to the OF.
He should play a sizeable role over 162 game season. Tons of playoff experience, and mentor to Shaw is a binus.
Did Justin have a self imposed deadline to negotiate a deal or is he a grown up?
He never grew!
JT should be the everyday DH and occasionally 3B or 1B. Suzuki needs a new home.
Seattle???
Suzuki costs money, the Mariners won’t touch him with a 50ft pole for that reason even though he is good.
Suzuki was the best hitter on the team last season.
A 40 year old still playing. Must give a lot of guys hope.
