Bo Bichette will become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season, but the shortstop has yet to discuss a long-term deal with the Blue Jays, Bichette told MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson and other reporters. “We haven’t had any talks, but from my perspective, we all grow up wanting to be one of those guys that has an opportunity to stay with an organization for their entire career,” Bichette said. “I’m just focused on what I’ve got to do this year to help the team win and be the best version of myself. Whatever happens will happen.”
While negotiations could still begin later in Spring Training, the lack of activity between Bichette and the Jays isn’t too surprising. For one, Toronto is facing a more pressing deadline in extension talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., as the first baseman said he isn’t willing to continue discussions beyond February 18, which is the Blue Jays’ first full day of spring camp. Since a Guerrero extension would surely represent both the largest deal in Jays history and one of the larger deals in baseball history, such a big-ticket negotiation is naturally the team’s priority before turning to any other contractual matters.
There’s also the simple fact that it isn’t clear whether or not Bichette is even still in the Blue Jays’ long-term plans, coming off a surprisingly poor 2024 campaign. Bichette hit only .225/.277/.322 over 336 plate appearances, and played just once after July 19 due to a lengthy recovery from a right calf strain. A previous IL placement due to another calf strain sidelined Bichette earlier in the season, plus he also had surgery on a fractured right middle finger in late September.
Plenty of other Toronto players struggled and/or battled injuries during an overall dismal year for the franchise, but getting virtually nothing from a cornerstone player like Bichette was a particularly harsh blow to the lineup. Bichette more or less hit the ground running from the start of his MLB career in 2019, with a strong .299/.340/.487 slash line and 89 home runs over 2328 PA from 2019-23. Bichette received down-ballot MVP support in each of the last three of those seasons, and twice received All-Star nods while also leading the American League in hits in both 2021 and 2022.
At this time last year, in fact, there was plenty of debate about whether Bichette or Guerrero was the better long-term investment for the Blue Jays, as Guerrero was coming off a relatively modest 118 wRC+ season in 2023 before returning to superstar form in 2024. It should be noted that Bichette’s own 2023 campaign wasn’t without its warts, as knee and quad problems greatly reduced his production over the final two months of that season.
With all this recent history in mind, “it feels very difficult to find a middle ground both sides would agree on” in extension talks, Matheson observes. Bichette surely feels like a big rebound year is coming, and so he isn’t going to sell himself short on an asking price. From Toronto’s perspective, it is only natural that the team wants to see how (or if) Bichette bounces back before considering him for a hefty multi-year pact.
It isn’t too often that star players sign extensions once they get too deep into their final season prior to free agency, so even if Bichette does return to form, it feels like he is essentially a lock to test the market next winter. Some trade speculation has circled around Bichette over the last couple of years, and while GM Ross Atkins has been steadfast in his refusal to deal Bichette, a trade might become more possible at the deadline if the Blue Jays are struggling again.
I cannot stress enough how much I hate our front office and team president. Just incredible levels of incompetence.
If there scouts believe a bounce back is coming, offer him a 9 year 275 million dollar dear and make him n Vlad blue jays for life
10 years 430 for Vlad
8 years 375 for Tucker in the winter
Sign them both for less then Soto
Get all 3 for a Billion
Nobody can complain about Jays being cheap or being a bridesmaid
Hanging your hopes on signing Kyle Tucker is a hell of a gamble
Yeah because Kyle will be a dodger next season

If there scouts believe a bounce back is coming,
=======================
That’s what most FAs are about, same with the Red Sox. If you believe in Crochet’s 2024 performance, you absolutely have to sign him.
But there is a chance for both of these guys that we’ve already seen their best.
Tucker ain’t signing for less than 10 years unless he gets hurt or has a bad year
One factor you failed to mention is that Shapiro plays a large role in any of that happening. Spending that much money in that short of a time span is liable to give him a stroke, heart attack, and aneurism all at once.
Wow. that’s a lot for Tucker…an for Vlad. But I guess it is easier to spend other people’s money…just ask the gov’t.
Said the fans of 90% of sports teams.
Do you really extend this guy after that season though? Would be insane to do that. Not talking about a 1-2 year prove it or buy low, a huge deal.
What exactly did they do now to make them incompetent? Ohtani and Soto hit free agency and there was absolutely nothing that either incumbent front office could do to keep them. Why would that be different for Vlad or Bo? And, if somebody does give Vlad 10 years and $400 mil I hope it’s not Toronto. That contract will anchor them down bad in less than half that time…
@Shark if Vlad and Bichette leave yall gonna be trash anyway for at the least half decade so does it really matter ?
I think it’s a tough situation to navigate. Have to sign Vlad first and Bo isn’t the most the reliable guy. Say Vlad is asking for a ton. Do you pay whatever Vlad asks? I think a reasonable person is fine overpaying for Jr. vs Bichette and the overpaying Bichette could hampers you sooner than later
Good
BB has not shown enough to warrant a big $ long term deal. He is about as overrated as it gets. He also has stated he does not want a long term deal. BB refusing to resign with Blue Jays would be a huge win for Toronto. Arjun can take over next year for a mil a year allowing them to reup Vlad for what ever it takes.
You think the high school kid w now 2 years of experience will be ready to take over ?
Or do you not expect the Jays to be competitive during the early Vlad window so they can punt a few positions in effort to get some young players some experience?
Zero chance 19 year old Arjun with his 82 games at a ball will be starting in the majors in 2026, but the Jays did trade for Bo’s replacement this offseason. Which would also open a spot for Orelvis to take over 2nd base
113 Ks in 319 single-A ABs seems like an issue. He’s young for that level, but that’s a lot of Ks.
This is what will happen.
They could trade him now and sign Jose Iglesias for one year. Iglesias had a much better 2024 than Bichette, so it’s a short term win with all the return in that trade to boot. BB isn’t gonna get that big contract until he consistently displays plate discipline. Nobody is looking for the next Javy Baez.
Yeah teams hate players that lead the majors in hits twice in a career that so far has him only playing the majority of games 3 times in 6 seasons
Low-A player that did not dominate the league? Nimmala is at least 2 years away.
Difficult to put a value on a player who slashes .299/.340/.487 his first five seasons and then puts up a negative WAR season and rivals Tim Anderson for the greatest collapse in recent memory by a young player.
Pretty easy to determine injuries were a factor in his performance last season
Yes, likely, but it still has to give a team pause before handing out a huge deal. Bichette also doesn’t want to take a discount, so he’ll need to go out and show 2024 was a fluke. The combination of those views makes a deal unlikely.
@Mystery
Nah, I predicted his collapse to a tee. No middle infielder with his flaws (declining power, terrible strikeout-to-walk ratios, bat-first, high BABIP) is able to sustain that level of production for more than three seasons.
Tim Anderson, Amed Rosario, Javy Baez, Gleyber Torres to a lesser degree….
Hot take….. Cubs trade for BO before the deadline…then they win the central and get knocked out by the wild card team.. do not extend him. Do not extend Kyle Tucker.
Nickels considers the season a success and gives Jed a 10 year deal and the rebuild starts again as we become a small market juggernaut come 2030
Cubs are not winning the central
That’s great and all but the real focus should be on Team Canada vs the US tonight. Bo and the Jays can have their moment tomorrow.
Canada 3
USA 2
Sounds good. Kindly leave the chat and go focus then.
Here’s a pretty good breakdown of what went wrong with Bichette last season:
justbaseball.com/mlb/can-bo-bichette-bounce-back-b…
Agree with Mark that Bichette would be selling himself low right now in any extension discussions with the Jays.
Jays’ front office needs new leadership.
“We don’t want to be that organization that is desperate to sign a specific free agent or hinging on our current plan or our future plans on a certain free agent …It didn’t make sense for us …to pivot to someone who would just take our money. In recent winters, we’ve seen teams continuing to pivot until someone takes their money. It may win a press release, but it may not actually push your organization forward. We were very conscious of that throughout the winter and we were very targeted about the players we wanted to add to this group.” -from the next article on the Home page
Talking about the Jays in particular?
I don’t understand the big deal here. It is likely injuries derailed his performance last year, even when he was “healthy,” but why would they give out a huge contract this offseason after such a performance? He also doesn’t really run anymore, so it’s not like a perennial 20/20 guy.
Yes, he has value when he’s back to his normal self. But I’m sure the team would be happy to start talking extension if he’s looking like his old self a few months into the season.
But if he reverts to form, he also gets a lot more expensive. It’s kind of tow sides of the same coin, You could get burned, but you have to come to a conclusion on how you think he will perform.
And if he doesn’t revert to form?
Then you don’t sign him. That’s the second side of the aforementioned coin.
Extension?? Bo is cooked
Save $ for vlad
Altho jr probly wont sign anyway, likely a met 8 months from now
They won’t think about Bichette after last season until they see what version of him they get. As for Guerrero, he must be pressing them to up their previous offer. Otherwise, why set a deadline since the agent is the one doing all the work. You have to have the attention span of a fruit fly for a 10 second “they offered $/years” from your agent to sidetrack you from your responsibilities.
I don’t think it’s the ten second phone call that is the distraction. It’s the emotional ups and downs of the season. If the player is having a huge week, just hit 6 bombs in 7 days with two walk offs under the bright lights, he’s gonna think he’s worth way more than the offer. If he just went 2 for 34, with 20 SO, he’ll be more likely think dang well better take what I can get now even if it’s below his true value..
The season is just an emotional roller coaster and trying to think about your own value in that context is a distraction.
Bad blood can easily rise in the player if he’s playing great and the organization is not offering what he thinks is fair. People who have a grudge against their employer usually don’t have the best performance which then affect their FA value in the off season.
Then there’s the human life stuff about what city do I want to live in for ten plus years. What if I have kids. What does my family think.
He doesn’t want to think about that stuff in the batters box or on the plane or trying to get to sleep in the hotel. That’s the distraction not being too busy to take a phone call or sign a paper.
He’ll get hurt and have to sign a one year deal with someone for 2026
“… tariffs and levies yet to be applied”
Tremendous pressure on Bo Bichette to perform this season. His future earning potential could increase exponentially or he may book a one way ticket to Tim Andersonville. Don’t call us, we’ll call you. I’m here for the crash and burn.
Bichette is smart to bet on himself. If he returns to form in 2025, he cashes in. If he struggles, someone will still give him a one year prove it deal and he has another chance in 2026. Then he can cash in.
If he never recovers he still got 2 more years at the MLB level and more millions than any of us will ever see.
